Educational Services Department ESD Newsletter May 2013 Daycare J. Levac On April 9th, Brault & Bouthillier invited the Daycares to attend their “Red Carpet” event. The workshop allowed 40 participants to explore the vast world of educational games & toys. To honor the Provincial Daycare Week throughout Québec, the Lester B. Pearson School Board hosted a breakfast on both Monday & Wednesday this week where over 260 educators, technicians, administrators and board personnel took part in the celebrations. As part of the celebration, daycare students created a collection of colorful hot-air balloons which reflects our 2013 theme entitled: “Thanks for your High Energy!” On May 17th, six Daycares; St. Anthony, St. Charles, St. Edmund, Beechwood, Allion & CWA took part in a friendly competition of Destination Imagination. Thirteen teams showcased their challenges In the Zone & Twist-O-Rama. school year is nearly over. The organization and distribution of the elementary, high school provincial, complementary and summer school exams kept the department very busy. ESD offered a transition from High School to Cegep workshop on May 17th. On the mornings of May 13th and 15th a celebration was held in the boardroom in honour of Daycare week. Guests were treated to a delicious breakfast. Our LBPSB Innovates program came to full speed this month with several events like the Scitech Showcase on May 7th, Robotics co-opetitions at PETES and Sunshine Academy and the iScience at John Abott College. An Entrepreneurship Contest Awards celebration will be held on June 5th to honour our participating students. Two summer literacy camps will be offered again this summer, one at Children’s World elementary for our students in the Eastern part of our board and one at Sherwood Forest for the Western part. As well, we are very excited to welcome our campers to our first annual Junior Voyageurs Summer Enrichment Day Camp on July 8th. A English Language Arts A. Scott Students were selected to participate in the Summer Literacy Camp to be held from July 2nd - July 12th. The Grade 6s wrote the ELA exam entitled “What Story Do You See?” Marking centers will be held over three days. Two LBPSB grade 6 teachers were involved with a team from WQSB and RSB to establish the anchor papers which will be used to score the grade 6 exam. These will be used by all teachers across the province. Teachers involved in the “Similarities of Teaching English and French” project met for a half day of planning. One final meeting is planned for June with the SWLSB and EMSB teachers to share and thank participants. The Kindergarten Provincial Committee met in Quebec City for two days. A presentation was given on the best teaching practices to support 2nd language development. The other which will focus on shared and interactive reading Verdun/Lasalle Literacy Support Initiative Project M. Support to Orchard staff on the use of graphic organizers to improve students’ retelling skills and of professional journals to improve practice. • Offered an in service to a group of teachers at Verdun Elementary on Literature Circles. Organized and offered the Gr.6 FLS familiarization sessions. Organized the LBPSB Summer Literacy Camp. Attended the Lumix Fair and the Association Québécoise des Enseignants de Français Langue Seconde conference. Nutrition Education R. Chiappetta & M. Cardin• A kiosk was offered on energy drinks as part of the “Addiction

Prevention Days 2013”. Grade 6 students from Clearpoint, St-John Fisher Sr. and Dorval elementary participated.

• A conference for parents of kindergarten students was givenat Maple Grove. The topic was on healthy lunch boxes.

• Nutrition and cooking classes were given at Lakeside for grade11 phys. ed. students. The goal was to teach meal planning forindependent living. Done in collaboration with Phys. Ed.Consultant.

• A lesson on hand-washing was given to students of the Lifeprogram and resource at Riverdale.

Ethics and Religious Culture/Intercultural Education/PELO/Francisation/Univers social N. Le Bihan

• Continuous support to ERC teachers• Intercultural exchange between 20 secondary 4 students from

La Malbaie and 20 secondary 4 students from Riverdale HighSchool, April 24th to 26th. It was a great success, students visitedfive places of worship.

• Regional and local meetings for intercultural education• Work on four units for elementary Social Studies in French

Career Development & WOTP P. Gilson

• Five of our High Schools submitted applications for a ProjetParticulier. This projet targets Grade 9 students who will be15 years old as of September 30, 2013.

• Some of our WOTP, POP and EXPLO teachers completed asuccessful mentorship program. We are hoping to offer thisprogram again next year.

• Our WOTP teachers attended a workshop on May 17th toshare best practices and prepare for the 2013-2014 schoolyear.

Work-Placement (Study) A. Scarano• Students and animators took part in the Central Parents

Conference on April 6 at Lindsay Place High School. Projectsand photos of students on their work-placement wereshowcased at the event.

• The Genesis program will be holding a year end concert onJune 3 to showcase the student’s creative writing and singing.They will be joined by musicians, and story tellers.

• The Work-Placement team also said good bye to animatorLoraine Tibbitt, who will be retiring after over 20 years ofservice in both the Lakeshore and Lester B. School Boards. Wewish Loraine a well-deserved retirement and thank her for herwisdom and continued support for the students and program.

CFER RIVERDALE A. Scarano• CFER Riverdale participated in the Central Conference which

was held on April 6th at Lindsay Place High School. • On May 25, CFER Riverdale in conjunction with Riverdale High

School are holding a Family Fun Day where old electronicequipment will be collected

• CFER Riverdale won the 1st prize in the Entrepreneurshipcontest in their category and have been sent to compete inthe provincials in Quebec City

Elementary Math, Science et technologie S. Lussier

• Continued work with different school teams on curriculummapping for math and science-technology to incorporate allcomponents into best teaching and learning practices.

• Offered workshops on Robotics, led classroom activities usingtechnology as a leverage for student learning.

• The Robotics Event: “Aventure Robotique” was a real success.About 150 students were involved and showed us what realcollaboration looks like. Congratulations to all involved.

• Continued work with Cycle 3 teachers to finalize details for theRobotics Event, “Robot Duo”. The event will take place on May 23-24, 2013 at PETES and Sunshine Academy. We will be welcomingaround 180 students.

• Began training for SmarterScience and started to implement theapproach by teaching the first step of inquiry to teachers andstudents. This very interesting framework is really appreciated.

Elementary Physical Education P. Gilson

• We had a successful Basketball Tournament which was held atfive of our elementary schools on the April 19th ProfessionalDay.

• We had a successful Cycle 1 Cross Country Run which was heldat Dorset Park on May 13th & 14th, 2013.

• Plans are underway for the annual Track & Field meet to beheld on June 4th & 5th at Riverdale H.S.

Elementary Mathematics C. Brunet• Support & promote Mathematics Curriculum Mapping using

Learning and Evaluation Situations (LESs) throughout the year.This is part of best teaching and learning practices designed todevelop the three competencies.

• Promote the use of the Evaluation Tools Spiral Booklet toconsolidate the understanding of the QEP’s mathematicscompetencies and knowledge acquisition, evaluation criteria,essential knowledge, Progression of Learning, and Frameworkfor Evaluation for each cycle in order to improve our students’success.

• Provide professional development to some LBPSB elementarymath teachers so they can become animators for markingcenters, thereby increasing the Board’s level of expertise.

• Math Marking Centers: Grade 4, 58 teachers attendedGrade 5, 48 teachers attended

• Working on developing a mathematics framework that willprovide teachers with a baseline and help to guide the teachingof Mathematics.

Social Studies R. Riccardi

• The next few weeks we will be putting the finishing touches onprojects initiated this year and we will also start planning fornext year. Some recent projects:- On May 17, two teachers from PCHS gave a workshop on

material they produced for Cycle 1 Social Studies in English. The workshop was very well received by those who attended.

- A High School/CEGEP transition meeting was held on May 17. Several Social Studies teachers, representing each of ourhigh schools, were on hand to collaborate with their CEGEP counterpart on how we can facilitate the transition for our students.

• Important dates: - June 13, our Secondary 3 students will be writing the end of

year exam in History and Citizenship Education.- June 17, our Secondary 4 students will be writing the high

school leaving exam in History and Citizenship Education.

School & Professional Libraries, Cultural Programs& Visual Arts S. Nesbitt

• Completed Peliq-An project at Beurling and Mgr. Richard withRebecca Binet collaborated on Bibliomobile and Qui liravaincra! with secondary FSL consultants. Planning stages for 2Peliq-an projects for next year.

• Helped High School Librarians with the organization of Battle ofthe Books. Successful Final battle with standing room only!

Community Liaison/Action Lasalle M. Albert• Orchard Point de Match Program is currently running an

8-week session. The students work after school on a creatinga short film and finish the day with basketball instruction.Students also have reading time in French to help them buildtheir French literacy skills.

• Clip ton 514 Gala was held in May at Cineplex Quartier Latin.Students from the island of Montreal were asked to write, actand direct a short film on Multiculturalism and Montreal.LCCHS participated in the film festival. All films can be viewedat www.clipton514.ca

Pearson Community Partnership N. Battet• LBPSB attended the Regional gala for the entrepreneurship

contest where we received seven awards, including three firstplace (Riverdale, St. Lawrence Senior, and Beaconsfield High),two second place (Beaconsfield High and LCCHS) and twohonorable mention (Verdun elementary and St. LawrenceSenior Academy). A gala will be held at the LBPSB on June 5,2013 to honour all of the contest winners.

• Upcoming and recent career days include Beaconsfield High,Lindsay Place, St. Edmund, Christmas Park, St. Paul, MountPleasant, St. Patrick, Verdun, Orchard, Allion, Sunshine,Riverview, St. Lawrence Senior and Forest Hill Senior.

• Educational Services in partnership with our community andeducational partners will host iScience day at John AbbottCollege on May 27, 2013.

• Nancy Battet attended a symposium on behalf of theAnglophone sector (GOAL) on May 14, 2013 to share bestpractices and ideas on how to bring career awareness includingemphasis on Vocational career programs.

Science and Technology K. Davey• The LBPSB SciTech Showcase was held on May 7th. This was

an evening to celebrate the successes and innovation in ourscience and technology classes. Twenty-two differentactivities were presented by students.

• A study guide for Secondary 4 Science and Technology andApplied Science and Technology is being developed. Workedwith teacher teams from 3 school boards to develop and editthis guide.

• A high school-CEGEP transition workshop was held at JohnAbbott College. Assisted in the facilitation of the workshop.

• A new evaluation situation has been developed for cycle 1 forthe technological design process. Worked with certain schoolsto field-test the task.

• June examinations were reviewed, edited and revised.

Mathematics F. Redivo• Attended “Emergent Learning”, Atlantic Canada’s education

conference, in Halifax.• Coordinated the participation of approximately 100 students,

teachers and guidance counselors from 5 high schools in atech symposium, entitled “J’ai le kick pour le tic”. Thesymposium was aimed at students in the 5 island schoolboards and took place at Université de Montreal (in French.)

• Planned, presented at, and facilitated a professionaldevelopment session at John Abbot College involving seniorhigh school teachers (math, science and history) and CEGEPprofessors.

• Continued the validation of the June and August math examsand began the final preparation for their printing anddistribution to schools.

English Language Arts J. Le Blanc• Concluded a project on differentiation using the Layered

Curriculum approach with MacDonald HS.• Attended the Google Apps for Education (GAFE) Summit in

Kitchener, Ontario.• Organized and presented PD for ESD on creating video

productions with the YouTube editor.• Organized PD event with John Abbott College on the

Transition to CEGEP. In attendance were Science, Math, andSocial Studies teachers and professors. Sessions were onliteracy, digital responsibilities, best instructional methods,and evaluation.

Dance R. Binet

• Volunteered at this year’s CSEA/CAGE Conference for the Artsheld in Montreal.

• Attended RHS Drama production “In the Heights” with sec.4STHS students.

• Continue to attend DEEN (MAD2) meetings and collaboratewith members of the arts community.

• Attended Culture à l’école meeting at the MELS.• Attended Libres comme l’art meeting at the CRE for allocation

of next year’s projects.• Completed 3 LESs for dance in collaboration with UQAM

speciatlist for DEEN LES/ES resource bank project.• Péliq-An project: Facilitated six more workshops for students

and completed project. Vernissage took place at BeurlingAcademy with students from BA and Monseigneur-Richard(MBSB).

Leadership R. Binet

• Once again, this year’s Leadership Board Camp was atremendous success. Thank you to the teachers and studentswho planned camp!

• Attended Central Students’ Committee meetings. • This year’s “Welcome to our World” CSC forum was another

success. Thank you to the CSC member panel, the grade sixstudents who attended and the JRHS Blues Trio!

• CPC workshop “ Web 2.0 Tools & Social Media”• Attended Destiny Quebec Conference at LCC with students and

teachers from JRHS and BA.

French M. Delsemme

• On April 3rd and 4th we had our Qui lira, vaincra semi-finalcontest.

• On April 9th and 10th, animated a two-day session withFrench teachers to work on the production of pedagogicalactivities related to the use of illustrated books in theclassroom.

• On April 12th, our big French for the Future annual event tookplace at UQAM. Some 360 LBPSB students attended.

• On April 18th, we held our final Qui lira, vaincra contest.Beaconsfield came first, followed by Lakeside Ac.

• May 1st and May 2nd, animated two follow up sessions forteachers using the portfolio écriture and the portfolio lecture.

• Several visits to High Schools to discuss about the end-of-yearexams.

• Started the Edmodo network with the Francoprofs.
