RASIONALEThe South African Pharmacy Council requires all pharmacy students to do part of their undergraduate pharmacy training in the practice setting. In order to effectively and meaningfully comply with this requirement of the Pharmacy Council you are required to participate in a programme of structured training in practice. This training forms an integral part of the pharmacy training programme and is compulsory for all students in every year group. This programme of structured training in practice, as you know by now, started at the end of your first year, it extends up to the fourth year and it will be concluded with the internship. This programme should not be seen in isolation but as an association between the lecturer, the pharmacy student, the pharmacist in practice and the provider of pharmacy training (the university) with the view of optimally equipping you for your chosen profession in accordance with the requirements of the South African Pharmacy Council.

The objectives of STP are to contribute towards achieving the broad curriculum outcomes (as stipulated in the Pharmacy Yearbook) by assisting you in applying your theoretical knowledge in the various facets of pharmacy practice. Needless to say, it is impossible to equip you for all possible practice situations, but the projects you will have to independently complete in the course of doing holiday work in pharmacies, are aimed at systematically familiarising you with the pharmacy environment, pharmacy products, and practical applications of the chemical, forensic, pharmaceutical, pharmacological, managerial and other theoretical knowledge you will be exposed to in the course of your university training. We trust that you will enjoy a positive interaction with the pharmacist(s) where you will be working, and that both parties will derive mutual benefit from this relationship. At this stage of your training you have acquired an useful complement of theoretical knowledge, and it is hoped that the pharmacist in the pharmacy where you are working will share with you his or

her theoretical knowledge as well as his or her knowledge of the practice of pharmacy, and where necessary will advise you on the project.

PREREQUISITESYou can only enroll for FGPO371 if you take FKTG311 and FMSG311 simultaneously or have already passed these modules.

You must also provide proof of your registration with the South African Pharmacy Council and time (in hours) you have worked in a pharmacy.

STUDY MATTERThere are no specific handbooks prescribed for this course. You will have to use your discretion and consult the handbooks prescribed for the main courses.

EVALUATIONThis course have only a final mark, which will be calculatd from a combination of your performance in Tswana or Zulu, holiday assignments and the preparation of a poster to be used in the clinics in the module FGPO 471. You must have a final mark of 50% to pass.

You have to pass all the FGPO modules in order to obtain your degree and it is therefore important for you to carry out all these assignments.

Full examination regulations are in the year book under General rules.

ASSESMENT OF ASSIGNMENTSFormat of assignmentsMost assignments are designed in such a way that they have to be carried out in a community, hospital or clinic pharmacy, with or without the input of pharmacists or other health care personnel. The assignments should not require more than 20 hours of your time, and they are considered part of your compulsory 400 hours of holiday work. The project mostly consists of short practical assignments, involving the gathering of certain information from the pharmacy itself or from product package inserts. You will notice that the assignments focus on pharmacy products or aspects of pharmacy to which little or no reference is made during your formal training. Apart from retrieval of information that inevitably is part of a question you are not required to conduct major theoretical research using textbooks or other literature. You are free, and you are encouraged, to discuss the question with the pharmacist and obtain his/her opinion.

Certain limitations apply regarding the length of certain assignments and questions and you are urged to keep to them in order to avoid penalisation.

The table below serves as a guideline for the final assessment of STP assignments by the School of Pharmacy.(NB: Additional marks will not be awarded for a large amount of text that is downloaded from the Internet and used unchanged in your project document. On the contrary, it is more important to identify the essence of the question and to summarise what is required in understandable, clear terms, avoiding long discussions).

Study Unit 2

2.1 EVALUATION OF THE PHYSICAL ARRANGEMENT AND DESIGN OF A PHARMACY PREMISES

The purpose of this assignment is to assist you in becoming sensitive to the implementation of some of the legal requirements and good principles accompanying pharmacy in the practical situation. The outcomes will be achieved by completing an assignment on the evaluation of the physical arrangement (interior design) within a pharmacy. According to the evaluation it will be determined whether the pharmacy meets the requirements and adheres to the principles or not.

.

You will need approximately 4 hours to complete the assignment in such a way that the outcomes will be achieved. This assignment will account for 20% of your holiday assignment for the module FGP0371.

On completion of this assignment you ought to be able to

apply the principles pertaining to the physical arrangement (interior design) of a pharmacy in the practical situation; and

3

Page 11: EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT TASKS€¦  · Web viewevaluate the physical arrangement (interior design) of a hospital pharmacy or community pharmacy in order to determine whether the requirements

Study Unit 2

evaluate the physical arrangement (interior design) of a hospital pharmacy or community pharmacy in order to determine whether the requirements and principles of good pharmacy have been met in the practical situation.

In addition to this you also ought to be able to:

communicate comfortably with members of the profession and to render a contribution with regard to the implementation of such legal requirements and good principles as would pertain to the profession of the pharmacist in practice

report individually with regard to practice-related topics and issues; and

identify problems and suggest possible solutions with regard to the implementaion of legal aspects that exercise an influence on the profession of the pharmacist

You will need to refer to the following literature while working on the assignment:

Good Pharmacy Practice in South Africa, 2004. South African Pharmacy Council. Special reference has to be made to chapter one: “Professional standards for premises”. The document can be found on the South African Pharmacy Council’s website and could also be sent to your e-mail addresses.

You will be responsible for evaluating the physical arrangement (interior design) of one community pharmacy or one hospital pharmacy (private or public) that has been registered with the South African Pharmacy Council. In your evaluation the focus must be on whether the arrangement meets the principles of good pharmacy practice and accompanying legal requirements or not.

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU?

The procedure that you have to follow in your task of evaluation is explained below:

1. OBTAIN PERMISSION TO PERFORM THE EVALUATION

You will first have to obtain permission to evaluate the pharmacy from the responsible pharmacist / owner / pharmacist in charge. Attached to this assignment you will find a letter that has to be presented to the responsible person. It must be signed by the responsible pharmacist / owner / pharmacist in charge before you can proceed with your activities of evaluating the premises. The signed letter must be handed in together with your report.

4

Page 12: EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT TASKS€¦  · Web viewevaluate the physical arrangement (interior design) of a hospital pharmacy or community pharmacy in order to determine whether the requirements

Study Unit 2

You will have to assure the responsible pharmacist or owner that the specific pharmacy will in no way be identified and that this assignment is done strictly for the purposes of training.

2. SELECT A PHARMACYYou have a choice between a community pharmacy and a hospital pharmacy (private or public). You have to evaluate one pharmacy only. It would be preferable to select a pharmacy situated in your home town. The pharmacy of your choice may be visited by one student only. This is an individual assignment.

3. READ THE PRESCRIBED LITERATUREYou must read the relevant sections contained in the “Good Pharmacy Practice” document. It is especially Chapter 1, “Professional standards for premises”, that has to be studied carefully. Take note of the requirements stipulated with regard to the following aspects:

a. Arrangement and appearance of the dispension area.b. Waiting area.c. Semi-private area for supplying information and advice.d. Private area for supplying information and advice.e. Consultation area for supplying sifting- and monitoring services.

4. CONDUCT THE EVALUATION PROCESSEvaluate the physical arrangement (interior design) of the pharmacy as observed according to the requirements and principles contained in the “Good Pharmacy Practice” document of the South African Pharmacy Council. You must evaluate the following aspects:

a. Arrangement and appearance of the dispensing area.b. Waiting area.c. Semi-private area for supplying information and advice.d. Private area for supplying information and advice.e. Consultation area for supplying sifting- and monitoring services. (In the

event of such services not being rendered by a certain pharmacy it would not be compulsory for that pharmacy to have such facilities. Your evaluation report will therefore not include reference to this aspect.)

Perform the following activities during the evaluation process:

Evaluate each of the aspects mentioned above in order to determine whether the standards and specific requirements reflected in the “Good Pharmacy Practice” document have been met or not. Do not merely indicate your decision but motivate it as well. Each statement must be motivated. It would, for example, be necessary to motivate and explain why you think or decide that a certain area has not been arranged or designed adequately or properly, or why you think or decide that it lacks compliance with stipulations contained in the document.

Make use of photography. Your statements and motivations must be substantiated by photographs to illustrate the matters discussed by you. A maximum of 15 photographs will be allowed. A minimum of 5 photographs is required as at least one photograph per aspect to be investigated (as indicated above) will be necessary to support your discussions. Photographs should preferably be taken by means of a digital camera so that they can be used during lectures and group

5

Page 13: EDUCATIONAL MANAGEMENT TASKS€¦  · Web viewevaluate the physical arrangement (interior design) of a hospital pharmacy or community pharmacy in order to determine whether the requirements

Study Unit 2

discussions. (If this is not possible other types of photographs will be accepted.)

Take good care of your motivation . You will be penalised for decisions and statements which are not accompanied by the necessary motivation or argumentation. It must be evident that your reasoning is valid.

KEEP THE FOLLOWING IN MIND

It is important to realise that confidentiality must be maintained in your report and discussions from beginning to end. It would, therefore, be necessary to refer to the pharmacy’s registration number only (as provided to the pharmacy by the SAPC). At no stage should mention be made of the pharmacy’s or pharmacist’s name or address. Also make certain that no such identification possibilities are reflected in any of the photographs.

Do not postpone working on the project until the last few days of the holidays. Complete the evaluation in good time so that you will allow enough time for proper reporting. It is to your own advantage to submit a piece of work that has enjoyed your careful attention and is complete.

The completed assignment must be submitted to Professor Martie Lubbe on or before 10 April 2007_(after the April recess). It would be necessary to present it in the form of a hard copy (typed and printed out on paper) with the photographs included. (The photographs may also be presented on a CD.) The assignment, photographs included, must not exceed three pages in length. Keep the statements and relevant motivations short and to the point. Do not quote directly from the “Good Pharmacy Practice” document.

Make certain that you keep a copy of your assignment.

ALLOCATION OF MARKS

This assignment’s mark will represent 20% of the mark gained for your holiday assignment, i.e. for the module FGP0371

The content of the poster must be on the level of a patient visiting the clinic. Make use of pictures and large text in order that the poster is legible, can be understood and is a good source of information. The size of the poster may vary from A2 to A0 and must be laminated. Please do not attach any oblect to the poster that may come loose and fall off, with time.

No reference to medication may appear on the poster.

The most important criteria for evaluation are:

The suitability of the poster in the clinic situation.

The relevance and correctness of the information.

The legibility and visual impact.

You have to select a subject form a list that will appear on the notice board form February 2007. Only 2 students for each subject will be allowed.

Geagte Apteker/ Kollega,

Tel 018-299-2267 / faks 018-299-4243

of heg. voltooide vorm aan student se opdrag.

Letter to Supervising Pharmacist

Dear Pharmacist/Colleague,

STRUCTURED PHARMACY TRAINING FOR PHARMACY STUDENTSThe School of Pharmacy appreciates the opportunity offered to our student(s) to spend time or work in your pharmacy, and for your assistance with honing their skills in a manner that can not be simulated in a classroom.

The attached assignment forms part of the 400 hours practice exposure that pharmacy students have to complete individually, in accordance with SA Pharmacy Council requirements. Since each annual assignment constitutes a small part of the total pharmacy training credits over 4 years, no single assignment is able to satisfy all the curriculum outcomes. This assignment therefore focuses primarily on aspects of pharmacy not covered extensively in the formal training, but which we believe a new pharmacist should at least be aware of. You will probably have to deal with many questions from the student which can be handled in any way you consider suitable. You are requested not to merely provide all answers to them – to the contrary, the student is required to work independently and should preferably be referred to suitable alternative sources if the solutions are not readily to be found in your pharmacy: eg. Other health professionals, including pharmacists in other settings such as hospitals or clinics, package inserts, textbooks, product literature, medical practitioners, the internet, etc. (please note that that all sources of information must be documented.)

Your assistance with the assessment of the assignment, especially your evaluation of the validity of the product information will be appreciated. (we neither have access to, nor knowledge of all the product lines in individual pharmacies.) You will only be required to verify that the products referred to are the correct ones, and testify to the fact that the student personally made an effort to obtain the answers in an honest way. An important learning outcome of our pharmacy programme is the development of healthy values and attitudes in our students. Your evaluation of the student’s general attitude towards our profession, and towards this project in particular, will be of value to us (communication and dealing with clients and staff may provide some clues). Always keep in mind that, although this assigment should be regarded as a learning opportunity for our students, we trust that it will contribute to their enthusiasm for the profession, albeit in difficult times.

You are therefore cordially requested to complete the enclosed control-evaluation form which should take a few minutes only. It is a requirement for a pass-rate and should be returned together with the completed assignment, either by the student, or if preferred faxed, e-mailed or mailed by yourself under separate cover to :

Dr S van Dyk, School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Sciences, Northwest University, Hoffman Street, Potchefstroom 2531.e-Mail: [email protected]. Tel 018-299-2267 / Fax 018-299-4243

IF PREFERRED, THE FOLLOWING EVALUATION FORM CAN BE FAXED FOR THE ATTENTION OF

DR S VAN DYK TO FAX NO: 018 299-4243

The criteria below can be used for your assessment. Any comments and recommendations will be appreciated.
