Islam in the Modern World ISIS, suicide bombings and terrorism have dominated headlines and global politics. Islam and Muslims are often viewed

through stereotypes as fundamentalists, extremists or radicals. The ability of Muslims to deal with modernity has also

been questioned. These issues distort our understanding of the world’s second largest religion. What is Islam really

about?

This CD provides PowerPoint presentations on the Islamic perspective of contemporary topics.

Q&A on Islamic Content This DVD covers content across the Studies of Religion Preliminary and HSC Courses. It is an interview with Mehmet

Ozalp, Director of ISRA and Associate Professor of Centre for Islamic Studies and Civilisation at Charles Sturt

University. He discusses Islam in the daily life of Muslims and the expressions of faith and beliefs in Islam.

Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet travels in the footsteps of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad to the Arabian Desert and

the holy city of Mecca where Muhammad’s story unfolded. But the film does not just stay in the past. Much of its story

is told through the observations of contemporary American Muslims, including a fireman at the World Trade Centre on

September 11, a second generation Arab-American family building a community based on Islamic principles, a

Congressional Chief of Staff working for justice, and a refugee fleeing religious persecution, whose experiences in

some way echo Muhammad’s life.

Al-Ghazali - The Alchemist of Happiness Born in 1058 in Tus, Khorasan, in present-day Iran, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali was one of the most original

thinkers the world has known. Besides being a major influence in the Muslim world, the West has also felt his

effect. He influenced major figures of medieval philosophy such as Thomas Aquinas and Moses Maimonides,

who shaped the philosophy of the Latin West. As the author of some 250 books on topics ranging from

theology and ethics to metaphysics and philosophy, al-Ghazali came to be known as ‘Proof of Islam’. For

almost a thousand years he has served as an inspiration for spiritual seekers everywhere as he was someone,

like the Buddha, willing to give up everything: wealth, position, family and comfort in order to search for

Truth.

This 80 minute film sets out to discover who al-Ghazali was and whether we, living in the 21st century, can

still find relevance in his teaching.

The Qur'an with Annotated Interpretation in Modern English By Ali Unal A timely addition to literature on the holy book of Islam, this translation provides the Arabic text as well as

extensive explanations and interpretations on most verses. The use of modern English both in the translation and

the commentaries, and the focus on social and historical aspects of Islam in the commentaries and

appendices make the translation particularly accessible.

Hard Cover $60

The Meaning of the Holy Qur’an By Abdullah Yusuf Ali Editorial Review: It is, by far, the best known, most studied, and most respected English translation of the

Qur'an. It was the first monumental and authoritative work of its kind and it subsequently inspired many such

similar endeavours. The eloquent poetic style of the translation and the authenticity of the extensive

commentaries and explanatory notes, have, no doubt, contributed greatly to its much deserved reputation as the

English translation of the meaning of the Qur'an.

101 Question You Asked About Islam By Mehmet Ozalp This book is a collection of commonly asked questions answered in a way that is understandable to anyone new

to the subject matter. It is remarkably comprehensive, ranging from, “What is the key message of Islam?” and

“Does Islam accept Jesus as the Son of God?” to the hot contemporary issues of “Why do women have to cover

their body and hair?”, “What is Jihad?”, “Does Islam encourage terrorism?” and “Is Islam compatible with

democracy?" The answers are clear and simple. - Bruce Elder (Sydney Morning Herald).

Islam between Tradition and Modernity By Mehmet Ozalp Most of the problems visible in the Muslim world stem from the gap created by a commitment to tradition and

a wariness of modernity. Islam has the resources to bridge this gap. As a religion it is generally misunderstood

not only by non-Muslims but, perhaps surprisingly, by Muslims as well.

This book outlines the defining beliefs of Islam and the devotional practices of Muslims. It explains how and

why the Islamic mood and the Muslim mind competes and, at times, conflicts with the promotion of modern

popular culture and the propagation of contemporary liberal values.

Muhammad: Biography and Pictorial Guide The Prophet of Islam Muhammad and Pictorial Guide features the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad that

formed the moral bases of the Islamic Civilisation.
