Principal’s Report ….

Earlier in the year, I sought and received

support from parents, via the P & C to be

part of the second round trials for

Empowering Local Schools. By the end

of 2014, all NSW schools will adopt the

changes that DEC is now trialling. My

attitude to this is that if changes are

coming, we should be part of

determining what the final changes will

look like. There is also a significant

enticement to be part of the trial aside

from the capacity to comment on what

works and what doesn‘t work, by way of

a one-off cash grant. In Term 4 this year,

Lucas Heights will commence the trial by

introducing new financial management

software provided by DEC. Other

changes to the way we manage our

finances, our staffing and also our

information data will be introduced over

the next twelve months. We don‘t know

what all of the changes will be yet but at

least we will be in a position to advise on

what works and what doesn‘t work and

what further changes still need to be

made.

Empowering Local Schools will remain a

significant issue for all schools to deal

with in the next few years. The changes

coming to schools, both in the way we

are funded and to a lesser degree in the

way we are staffed, will place significant

demands on schools‘ professional

learning requirements. The website

below will continue to post the latest

information available and I encourage

Congratulations LHCS

‘Could you please pass on my congratulations to everyone involved in the school performance at Miranda Fair last week. We thoroughly enjoyed the variety and it showcased LHCS beautifully.

Ms Turner with the band and vocal students of varying ages, did a really lovely job. I especially enjoyed Brody’s singing. What an inspirational song choice that was. Kyle R and Nash L were selected to MC and also did a great job .

Thanks again for a really enjoyable morning.’

Belinda Russo (parent)

On 1 August the band and some other

students from Lucas Heights Community

School performed at Miranda Shopping

Centre.

We performed at midday and the senior

band played first. They planed Pep Rally

Rock and captivated the audience during

the performance. The next song played

was Pirates of the Caribbean which

wowed the audience!

The high school band was next and

played a stunning performance. We

played Walking on Sunshine.

The following students also performed:

Alexandria M sang with guitar.

Alex E played fur elise on the piano.

Brody J - Bittersweet Symphony

Lacinda Fisk—Emile Sandes

Kyllie R and Nash L ended our

performance with a bow.

Aliesha F, 7H

On Thursday 2 August, I performed

along with the dance groups and choirs of

the Primary School, at Menai

Marketplace for Education Week.

It was great for the primary students to be

enjoying themselves and being able to

perform so well and so comfortably in a

public place and at such a young age.

I was very excited when I found out that I

was able to join the Primary School and

add to their performances. I couldn‘t wait

to do my first public solo performance of

„A Thousand Years‟ by Christina Perri

and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I was also glad to see that the audience

was enjoying it too. I appreciate all the

compliments I received from teachers

and parents in the audience and would

like to thank Mrs Turner for giving me

the opportunity to do this.

I look forward to my next performance.

Rachel N, 8L.

Support Unit News

The Support Unit is eagerly awaiting

the Paralympics. One of our former

students, Katie Hill, is in the Gliders

and will once again be representing

Australia in the wheelchair basketball

competition.

To show support for a former LHCS

student it would be wonderful if the

school community could send Katie

Hero Grams when the Paralympics

begin.

We wish her all the best.

2012 Harmony Day

Congratulations to those students who

participated in the 2012 Harmony Day

Competition. The dedication you show

towards eliminating racial, cultural and

religious intolerance in our society

makes the staff of Lucas Heights

Community School very proud.

Remember: a decent society does not

discriminate against particular groups

on the basis of religion, gender, ethnic

origin or age and is dedicated to

combating prejudice and discrimination.

Thank you for helping to cultivate a

safe, caring and accepting environment

in our world. Keep up the good work!

Zoosnooze

On a cold and blustery day Year 12

Biology headed into the city for a day at

the Botanic Gardens followed by a night

out spent camping on the floor of one of

the teaching classrooms at the zoo.

Surrounded by snakes, crocs, turtles,

lizards and a few furry mammalian

friends we all tried to get some sleep after

a long day/night of lessons and hands-on

learning experiences.

The class went for a late night tour of the

zoo and ended with a lesson on animal

adaptations at about 10.00pm. Up again

at 6.00am we then had a ‗behind the

scenes‘ look at the feeding and daily

routine of the animals and keepers and

had another hands-on lesson with some

Aussie natives. I think the pictures will

give you a better idea of what a great

experience they had!!

I send out a big thanks to Mr Cook who

came and stayed the night and drove all

the gear to us at the zoo - I am sure that

Year 12 were grateful and I definitely

was!

NATIONAL SHOE BOX COLLECTION: KINDERGARTEN - YEAR 12

This year LHCS will be participating in the National Shoe Box Collection organised

by Samaritan‘s Purse. Every year, generous people across the world lovingly pack

shoes boxes with simple gifts. Operation Christmas Child is a unique project of

Samaritan‘s Purse that brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations around

the world through gift-filled shoe boxes. It‘s as easy as 1-2-3:

1. Find a shoe box and cover with cheerful paper.

2. Determine if a boy or girl will receive your gift.

3. Fill the box with a variety of simple gifts.

Once you have filled your shoe box, drop it into either Miss Sharp (HB5) or Miss

Gruber (HB7) with the gift tag by Monday 27 August.

K-6 Open Morning

to celebrate Book Week

2012 is the National Year of Reading.

―The National Year of Reading 2012 is

about children learning to read and keen

readers finding new sources of

inspiration. It's about helping people

discover and rediscover the magic of

books. And most of all, it's about

Australians becoming a nation of readers.

Nearly half our population can't read with

any fluency. It's a shameful and worrying

statistic. We have identified three goals

which will help us turn Australia into a

nation of readers and encourage a reading

culture in every home:

For all Australians to understand the

benefits of reading as a life skill and a

catalyst for well-being;

To promote a reading culture in every

home; and

To establish an aspirational goal for

families, of parents and caregivers

sharing books with their children every

day.‖

This explanation has been taken from the

homepage for the National Year of

Reading http://www.love2read.org.au/

about-us.cfm

Dear Parents,

The Support Unit would like to make

the garden area outside the Primary

and Secondary Support units more

accessible and attractive so the

students can use this space at recess

and lunchtimes.

If you are not going to redeem the

plant vouchers that the council sent out

with the last rate‘s notice, we would

appreciate you donating them to the

Support Unit. We will leave a box on

the front counter of the office for the

donated vouchers. Thank you

Libby Walton

At Lucas Heights Community School we

are embracing the National Year of

Reading with another special event

planned for this term. On Thursday 23

August K-6 classrooms and the school

library will be open for visitors. We have

a special morning planned to showcase

some of the activities that have our

students immersed in books. Students

will be able to dress up as a book

character and visitors will be invited to

stay and share lunchtime with their

children at 12.30pm.

Meet your child in their classroom at

11.00am and tour various classrooms to

see the wonderful Book Week displays.

Our library has some excellent books for

sale and we would appreciate your

generosity in donating a book to our

school library.

Essential in a student‘s career pathway

planning is the development of a Résumé.

A résumé is a document used by

individuals to present their background

and skill set. Résumés can be used for a

variety of reasons but most often to

secure new employment. A typical

résumé contains a summary of relevant

job experience and education. The

resume is usually one of the first items,

along with the cover letter that a potential

employer encounters regarding the job

seeker and is typically used to screen

applicants.

As students begin to plan for full time,

part-time and holiday employment there

are some simple tips they should

remember when preparing their resumes.

Résumé advice

Your résumé should represent you in the

best possible way in order to secure an

interview. Your résumé (or CV –

curriculum vitae) is the first thing an

employer sees before deciding to invite

you for an interview.

Important notes:

Ensure your email address is

appropriate,

eg [email protected].

Not something like [email protected]

Ensure your mobile phone voicemail

message is appropriate, recording

your name and asking the person to

leave a message. Employers get a

good feel for the type of person they

are trying to contact by their

voicemail message. Do set up a

voicemail so as prospective employers

can leave detailed messages with

contact details about interviews

It‘s important that your résumé

contains all the relevant information

without being too long. Three pages

should be the maximum length if

possible. Research shows that

employers scan over résumés, rather

than read them in detail.

Year 12

All students have been issued with the

2013 University Admissions Centre

(UAC) Guide. The Guide has

information about every course, as well

as how to apply and the selection and

offer process.

Applications for tertiary study in 2013

will open on UAC‘s website on 8

August. In addition EAS (Educational

Access Schemes) applications also open

on the 8 August. NSW HSC students will

be issued with a 4-digit UAC PIN which

they will receive in the mail in early

August; this pin is needed to apply so

keep it in a safe place.

Over the coming weeks Year 12 will

meet with the Careers teachers to discuss

applications and important dates of

which they should be aware.

For more information on courses or the

application process see the Careers

teachers.

All Lucas Heights Students are

encouraged to use the schools Careers
