Kids at Adventure Preschool in Regentville.

Adventure Preschool is all about caring for each child, preparing them for school and for the rest of their lives as they grow into men and women.

Staff at the local pre-school are striving for excellence in Early Childhood Education, to provide quality care for each child without focusing on a particular aspect but by caring for the ‘whole person’.

You will see children taking part in the usual daily activities of a pre-school, learning new

skills and growing more and more each day, but it is the extra activities, teaching kids to be good citizens, that sets Adventure Preschool apart.

Just last week, Adventure Preschool donated fi ve teddy bears to Nepean Hospital to go to their children’s ward.

“Having experiences like this will leave memories that stay with these children for the rest of their lives,” said owner, Kelly.

The pre-school loves helping others and the community.

D eclan Gray, a Year 10 student at Emmaus Catholic College at Kemps Creek

doesn’t challenge the fi re-eating dragons. He is however, well up to the task when it comes to dragon boat racing. According to Wikipedia ‘the use of dragon boats for racing is believed to have originated in China more than 2500 years ago. The modern competitive aspect is one small part of this complex water craftsmanship’.

Declan’s interest in the sport is not only enriched by knowing the

ancient traditions associated with dragon boats but by family. His mother Fiona Wells has represented Australia fi ve times with success, participating internationally.

Declan has been involved in dragon boats since the age of 12 with regular practice at the Penrith Regatta Centre. His skill, self discipline, support of family and interest from the Emmaus community have encouraged him to go through a rigorous selection process.

Success in this resulted in his

selection as a member of the Australian Auroras Junior Dragon Boat Team.

The excited team participants will be competing at the World Dragon Boat Championships in July. This year’s competition is being held in Szeged in Hungary, where the many human powered watercraft will compete for prized gold, silver and bronze medals.

The international competitions began in 1976 in Hong Kong. Declan took part in 2012 in the contest in Hong Kong, returning

home with silver and bronze medals.

“The sport has allowed me to travel quite extensively,” he said.

There will be a training period before the actual competition, and Declan will be enjoying a holiday tour immediately afterwards but has assured the supportive Emmaus community that he’ll be back “with lots of photos and I hope our team will score medals for Australia”.

Dragon Boat racing is recommended as being a healthy ‘keep fi t’ sport.

Students need as much assistance as possible from careers advisers.

I n this rapidly changing global economy, school careers advisers are more

important than ever to help prepare students for the world of work, training or further study.

By engaging with industry and keeping up to date with local opportunities, they assist young people with their career directions and provide them with valuable experiences.

High School Careers Adviser Jeanette Camillos says school

leavers are entering a tough climate characterised by less job security, with more casual and contract work; short term career cycles and a diminished number of unskilled jobs.

“The students have to learn to really look at their skills and abilities and showcase them to an employer,” she said.

Camillos is chair of the Nepean Careers Forum, an association of careers advisers who share information and volunteer to help students.
