The United States and Pakistan place a priority on ensuring Pakistan has an educated populaon prepared for the 21st century workforce. Literacy is the foundaon of learning. Since 2013, the United States has improved Pakistani children's reading skills by providing reading instruconal materials to classrooms, training thousands of teachers in new reading instrucon techniques, and encouraging schools to dedicate more classroom me for reading. USAID is also invesng in teachers by building or repairing 17 Faculty of Educaon buildings across Pakistan and providing over 3,100 scholarships (under Pakistan Reading Project) so teachers can earn their educaon degrees. Every child deserves a high-quality educaon. USAID is building schools in underserved communies like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. The United States believes sociees thrive when girls and boys, regardless of origins or personal circumstances, have equal opportunity for educaon. USAID supports efforts naonwide to address barriers that keep students from enrolling and staying in school, and is providing emergency educaon to communies displaced by natural disasters and violent conflict. Over the past six years, USAID built or repaired over 1,000 schools across Pakistan. In the past three years, USAID trained 21,000 teachers and school administrators. Since 2009, USAID has provided nearly 17,000 scholarships for talented and financially disadvantaged students to aend terary educaon in Pakistan. USPCAS connects three U.S. universies with experse in energy, agriculture, and water with four Pakistani universies to modernize curricula, conduct joint research, and foster student and faculty exchanges. USAID and the Higher Educaon Commission of Pakistan established the Merit and Needs Based Scholarship Program for deserving, but financially constrained students who could not otherwise afford to earn their degrees.
