The Innsbruck Medical University stands for excellence in
education, research and patient care. Together with the Uni-
versity Hospital and its affiliated departments, it is the leading
medical center in Western Austria.
The mission of our highly qualified faculty members is to give
students the very best medical education and training. The
results of scientists working at the Innsbruck Medical Univer-
sity are recognized internationally.
The goal is to further advance Innsbruck as a scientific center
by focusing on innovative research in oncology, neuroscien-
ces, genetics, epigenetics and genomics as well as infectiolo-
gy, immunology and organ and tissue replacement, and to
promote the exchange of knowledge with other leading Euro-
pean universities.
Mission
The Innsbruck Medical University, although one of the youngest
universities in Austria, looks back on well over 300 years of
tradition. Established in 1669 as the Medical Faculty of the Uni-
versity of Innsbruck, it gained independent status in 2004. But
the history of medicine in Tyrol goes back even longer: in 1307
the first municipal hospital opened in the Tyrolean town of
Schwaz, famous for its silver mines. The first Austrian chair of
surgery was established in Innsbruck in 1773.
In 2002 the Austrian Parliament adopted a new University Act
(UG 2002) to develop the universities into legally independent,
special federal institutions with extensive autonomy. As an im-
portant part of this sweeping reform, the medical faculties of
Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck became independent universities.

With about 3,000 students and a faculty of over 1,400*, the
Innsbruck Medical University is the most important institution
for medical research and education in Western Austria and the
home university of many students from Tyrol, South Tyrol and
Vorarlberg.
Education
From the very first day, the teachers of Innsbruck Medical
University strive to prepare students for the responsible
tasks of medical and scientific life. Students receive a pro-
found scientific and patient-centered education of the high-
est standard, with direct patient contact provided throug-
hout their training in human and dental medicine. A PhD
program is offered either full-time or part-time.
A Bachelor program in molecular medicine was first introdu-
ced in fall 2011. Knowledge of the molecular fundamentals
of health and illness is indispensable in modern medicine.
The PhD Doctor of Philosophy program comprises nine inter-
disciplinary courses in basic research in addition to four in-
terdisciplinary clinical courses. The part-time clinical PhD
program allows practicing doctors of medicine to advance
their scientific career.
Research is the backbone of medical progress and has a long
and successful tradition in Innsbruck, to mention only the dis-
tinguished Innsbruck School of Medical Chemistry with Nobel
prizes going to three successive chairs. A compact campus
with excellent laboratory and clinical facilities guarantees a
successful present and a promising future for research in Inns-
bruck.
Current research priorities at the Innsbruck Medical University
include:
• Oncology
• Neurosciences
• Genetics, epigenetics and genomics
• Infectiology, immunology & organ and tissue replacement
Scientific research at the Medical University of Innsbruck is
very successful also in the highly competitive field of research
funding, both at national and international levels.
Science
Curing diseases and caring for patients is one of the three
core tasks of the Innsbruck Medical University. True to
the motto „healthcare that puts patients first“, highly
qualified staff at the University hospitals and depart-
ments provide patients in the region and beyond with
first-rate medical care.
The Innsbruck Medical University collaborates closely
with the Austrian land of Tyrol and its healthcare institu-
tions. An important contribution to patient care is made
by Tiroler Landeskrankenanstalten Ges.m.b.H. (Tilak)
with its logistics infrastructure and Tyrol-wide hospitals.
Medical experts at Innsbruck Medical University win in-
ternational recognition with new therapies and research
findings. The close proximity of theory and practice is a
major asset of the location and one of the reasons why
patients from all over the world seek medical treatment in
Innsbruck.
