QUOTATIONS - MY SUGGESTIONS
The posters are 8 1/2 x 11. Print on heavier stock paper for display in the classroom.
I created this project a number of years ago to use with my English classes. The quotations I gathered were to challenge my students to think about the power of education and learning and to inspire them to put great effortand pride in all that they do.
I display two or three posters a month as “food for thought”.
I have my students do a mini research project right before Presidents’ Day. We have discussions about education and learning and I ask for feedback about the quotations. I always have some amazing responses!
Here are some examples of their responses during our discussions:
“I never thought about education and that there were so many people who wrote about it”.“After reading the quotation I picked, I decided to put more effort into my homework”.“I’ve never liked reading, but after I did the project, I decided to read more books.”
STUDENT PROJECT - MINI REPORT
When I display the first poster in class in the beginning of the year, I explain that I’ll be displaying two or three a month and that they should read and think about them.
I have them do the mini research report in February just before Presidents’ Day.
HOW TO DO THE REPORTPrior to Presidents’ Day...
Make copies of the three quotation sheets (with the 23 quotations) and distribute them to your students.
Have your students read the quotations, but at this point, they shouldn’t try to interpret them. Explain that they should think about the quotations and then choose one (or more) person/people to research.
Make copies of the research page where they enter information about the person or people they choose to research. Some like to research more than one person.
Have your students find information on the Web about the people or person they choose.
Explain that the four facts on the student research page should include the person’s occupation (philosopher, educator, politician, etc) and other important facts about the person.
I have them cut the quotations from the student pages and paste them in the boxes on the research page.
Have them get into small groups so they can share their information sheets. I also explain that everyone has a right to his/her opinion and that one interpretation isn’t necessarily the correct one.
I encourage them to discuss their interpretations of the quotations. This leads to great discussions about the various interpretations.
Many times I’ll stop the groups briefly and ask, for example, who had done research about Marvin Minsky. I ask those students to explain what the quotation means so that the whole group hears different interpretations.
I also display the students’ papers with their interpretations.
Some of these quotations are more difficult than others to interpret therefore pick and choose the ones that you want to use depending on the age/ability level of your students.

NOVEL-RESPONSE-CARDS
NOVEL RESPONSE CARDS
This is one of my most popular products. There are sixty
activities, five per card that can be used with any novel.
They can be laminated and used in small, large groups,
with guided reading groups, literature circles and at
literacy centers. Some include art activities, writing
letters, sequel, adding new characters to novels, changing
the setting, determining the author's purpose and more.
For grades 4 - 8.

arrives to the ball in a limo. Students love these activities! Fairy
tale makeovers and other activities. This 13 page packet
explores the elements of fairy tales. Students rewrite traditional
fairy tales as modern ones, (Fairy Tale Makeovers) write an
interview with a fairy tale character, and retell one from another
character's point of view. Another worksheet centers around the
protagonist, antagonist. This is one of my favorite units! Grades
4 - 9

TeachersPayTeachers.com HUNGER GAMES
As this very intriguing tale unfolds, your
students will become immersed in the
personalities, strengths, weaknesses and
relationships of the characters. The
worksheets provided will help them
organize their thoughts about each one as
they read the novel. Collins expertly
weaves themes throughout the novel.
Worksheets are also provided so that your
students can connect and react to them.
Unique extension activities offer students
a way to express themselves creatively.
Other worksheets challenge them to
THINK and RESPOND! Grades 8 - 12
IDIOMS ARE FUN PACKET - Ruth S. -
TeachersPayTeachers.com IDIOMS ARE FUN PACKET
Teaching idioms is fun! These cut out
idiom cards can be used for a variety of
activities. A written activity requires the
kids decide which sentences illustrate
the idioms. Create a bulletin board with
pictures students draw of the literal
meanings of them. Have them work in
small groups, to write stories using
idioms with dialogue. Great for ESL
students! Grades 4 and up.
