TEACHER INTERNSHIP

The internship is a full semester field experience. Secondary (including K-12) students also register for the 359 seminar course. Elementary students have regular seminars that are included in the student teaching EDUC 345 course. Additional internship experiences are required for Special Education and Early Childhood majors. Schedule

Fall & Spring Semester: Elementary Education

Fall Only: Secondary Math, Biology, Chemistry, Integrated Science, Physics, PE

Spring Only: Special Education, Secondary: Art, English, World Languages, Music, History, Social Studies

Application materials and additional details are available online at: http://www.calvin.edu/academics/departments-programs/education/student-teaching/ Student Teaching when Teachers in the Cooperating District are Engaged in a Work Stoppage It is Calvin College’s policy to take a neutral stance in any labor dispute that involves a work stoppage in a school district in which we have placed teacher interns or teacher aides. In order to ensure the professional well-being and personal safety of our students, Calvin College teacher interns and teacher aides will be removed from their field placements when a work stoppage has been declared. The students will return to their placements when the dispute is settled and teachers return to their classrooms. If the work stoppage continues for a time period that will cause significant disruption to the student’s learning experiences as determined by the Dean of Education, a new placement will be found. Off-Site Internships Students interested in student teaching outside of West Michigan may indicate interest on the student teaching application. Elementary students are eligible to apply to the Chicago Semester Program. Other locations for both elementary and secondary students vary by semester. Participation in this program is limited and requires completion of additional criteria: recommendations from two previous instructors, a minimum GPA of 3.0 and an interview with Off-Site Committee Members. Contact Gwen Buteyn in the Education Department if interested: [email protected] .

CANDIDATE SUPPORT SYSTEM

In an effort to provide support to students in the Undergraduate Education Program, the following procedures have been implemented. The Student Support Committee, a subcommittee of the Teacher Education Committee, will oversee this process. 1. Professors or professional staff are encouraged to complete a student support form (available online) for students not meeting the professional commitments of the program. Unit instructors and department chairs will be contacted early in the semester and also near the end with a memo explaining the process, online access to the Statement of Commitment to Professionalism, and the student support form. They will complete this form for students for whom they have a concern regarding academic performance, professional behaviors, or any issues related to the Statement of Commitment to Professionalism. 2. In addition to the responses from all Unit instructors, EDUC 302/303 plays a gate-keeping role. EDUC 302/303 instructors will submit a form for each student in the course with one of the following recommendations:

Recommend Recommend with concerns Non-recommend.

The course of action for students who are not recommended or recommended with concerns will be determined by the Student Support Committee.

3. Each semester the student support forms submitted by faculty will be shared with the student within three weeks of the conclusion of the semester. The committee will review these concerns and will provide appropriate support including appropriate interventions. These forms will be filed internally in the department and will not be forwarded to the student’s credential file or shared with anyone outside of the program. 4. GPAs for all Education students will be checked at three points in the program. A minimum of 2.5 is required:

a. Applying to the professional level in the Education Program b. Semester prior to the internship c. Applying for teacher certification

5. Data collection and follow-up will be supervised by the Student Support Program Coordinator. The coordinator will regularly report to the Student Support Committee. 6. The semester prior to the internship, the Student Support Committee will review any students with continuing concerns and will implement as needed the following monitoring procedure:

a. Schedule a meeting with a member of the SSC, the EDUC 345 or 346 college supervisor and the student prior to the start of the internship. The focus of the meeting will be to discuss concerns and provide specific goals for success. These goals will be stated in a contract that the student will sign. There will be a progress check at the four- and eight-week points.

b. At the four- and eight-week points the coordinator will contact the EDUC 345/346 college supervisor for a progress check to confirm that the student is meeting the goals of the contract. If the EDUC 345 college supervisor needs additional support the EDUC 345 Team Leader will be contacted. This team leader is an ex officio member of the Student Support Committee. The EDUC 346 college supervisor may contact the Student Support member who was a part of the pre-student teaching conference or directly contact the Dean of Education should additional support or intervention be needed.

c. The Dean of Education will be alerted if the student fails to meet expectations and dismissal

from student teaching may be necessary.

APPEALS

Students who think they have been removed from or denied admission to the program unjustly may appeal in writing to the Appeals Committee. Further appeals relating to issues of due process may be made to the college Academic Standards Committee. Directions for filing appeals are available online at: http://www.calvin.edu/academic/education/programs/guidebook/appeal.htm.

Class rosters are checked each semester to determine if all of the students enrolled are eligible to be in each class. Students who are not eligible are informed that they will be dropped from the course(s) unless they become eligible or are granted permission by the Appeals Committee to stay in the course(s).

Entry into the program may be denied for a number of reasons. Below are two of the primary reasons students file appeals, and advice as to what to do should you not meet the admission criteria:

Grade Point Average below 2.5.

This is the most common reason for ineligibility. If your GPA is below a 2.5, you should do the following:

Plan your program so that you know when you have to take EDUC 302-303. Once you know the latest semester during which you must take your first 300-level education course, you have a target date so that you can then work on improving your GPA. The planning process is described in the “Planning Your Program” section of this booklet.

If you are at a point where you must take EDUC 302-303 and your GPA is between a 2.40 and

2.49, you may appeal to the Teacher Education Appeals Committee for permission to take these courses. You will have to prove that you must indeed take these courses at this time and that your GPA is improving.

If your GPA is 2.39 or below, you will have to make alternate plans because you are not eligible to

appeal. Make an appointment with the Dean of Education to discuss your options. Use Calvin’s support systems to improve your grades, including free tutoring and study groups

offered by Student Academic Services, the Rhetoric Center for help with paper writing and editing, counseling from the Broene Center, and conferences with your instructors, who are eager to help you succeed.

Permission to Student Teach

The requirements for permission to student teach are listed in this guidebook (see Table of Contents). If you have been denied permission to student teach because you did not meet department requirements, you should do the following:

Contact your advisor in that department. If you believe that you have a situation that warrants an appeal, your first appeal is to the department that denied you permission, and your advisor from that department will work with you to prepare the appeal.

If your appeal is denied by the department and you believe you have a good case, your next level

of appeal is to the Education Program Appeals Committee. Contact the Education Department for instructions on how to proceed.

Page 11: Education Program Guidebook - Calvin College · This Guidebook will assist you as you plan your program of study. Use it to keep a record of your Use it to keep a record of your progress

11

CALCULATING YOUR GRADE POINT AVERAGE

One of the main requirements for entry into the Professional Education Program is a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher. If you intend to take Education 302-303, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher prior to the first day of that class. While you may register for an education course before you are eligible, you must be eligible by the time that course starts.

Students who have low GPAs must learn to calculate their own GPA for three main reasons:

To see if they are going to make the 2.5 standard by the time they plan to start their first education course

To determine the grades they need in their classes in order to earn a 2.5

To see what the affect would be on their GPA of re-taking courses for a higher grade

The college calculates your GPA by dividing your cumulative honor points by the number of calculated semester hours that you have completed (calculated semester hours consist of all graded courses, including failed courses but excluding pass/fail courses). The chart below shows the honor points associated with each grade. Students with cumulative GPA’s further away from the 2.5 standard have a problem that often cannot be solved by just taking more courses and doing better. These individuals are faced with a choice of spending extra time at Calvin or retaking courses for a higher grade. For these people, knowing how to calculate a GPA is crucial. Consider the following example of a first year student:

FALL SEMESTER SPRING SEMESTER

Course Hours Grade Honor Pts Course Hours Grade Honor Pts Engl 101 4 D 4.0 Phys 112 4 F 0.0 Hist 151 4 D+ 5.2 Art 215 4 C 8.0 Biol 112 4 C- 6.8 Pol Sci 101 3 D- 2.1 Phil 153 3 D- 2.8 Rel 121 3 D+ 3.9 Registered Credited Calculated GPA Registered Credited Calculated GPA

Semester 15 15 15 18.8 1.25 Semester 14 10 14 14.0 1.0 Cumulative 15 15 15 18.8 1.25 Cumulative 29 25 29 32.8 1.13 Note: These grades result in a GPA of 1.13 at the end of the freshman year, which indicates trouble for a student in need of a 2.5 for acceptance into the Teacher Education Program. This GPA was determined using the college’s method of dividing the cumulative honor points, 32.8, by the calculated semester hours, 29. Be aware that when a course is failed, it is still counted in the GPA as a calculated semester hour.

This person would have to get A’s in nine more 3 semester hour courses to get a GPA of 2.51 by the end of the sophomore year, which is unlikely given the record in the freshman year. What to do? Students may re-take courses for another, hopefully higher, grade. To calculate the effect of retaking courses for a higher grade, start with the existing cumulative honor points and calculated semester hours printed on the transcript. Subtract the old honor points from the course you plan to retake and add in the honor points that you would expect to receive if you retake the course. Then divide the cumulative honor points by the number of calculated semester hours. Use Calvin’s support systems to improve your grades, including free tutoring and study groups from Student Academic Services, the Rhetoric Center to help with paper writing and editing, counseling from the Broene Center, and conferences with your instructors, who are eager to help you succeed.

TEACHER CERTIFICATION

Calvin’s Teacher Education Program meets the requirements for a Michigan teaching certificate. Prospective teachers in most states and provinces must earn a Bachelor's degree and a teaching certificate or license.

State of Michigan The candidate who meets Michigan’s requirements receives a Provisional Teaching Certificate which is valid for six years. The state requires a $160 fee to issue the certificate. The Elementary Certificate qualifies the holder to teach: Grades K-5, All Subjects Grades 6-8, All Subjects, Self-Contained Classroom Grades 6-8, Major(s) and Minor(s) Subject Areas Grades K-12 Chinese, Cognitive Impairment, French, and Spanish majors are available to elementary candidates. The Secondary Certificate qualifies the holder to teach: Grades 6-12 or K-12, Major Subject Area Grades 6-12, Minor Subject Area K-12 Art, Music, and Physical Education are available on a secondary certificate only. After the Provisional Certificate expires, the teacher may renew the Provisional Certificate or apply for the Professional Certificate.

Other States and Provinces If you hope to teach a particular subject in a certain state or province, it is wise to investigate your options early on to determine which majors, minors, and grade levels you should pursue at Calvin. Although the Michigan certificate will transfer to other states, not all states offer certification in the exact same subjects and grade level combinations that Michigan offers. Contact Calvin’s Teacher Certification Coordinator or visit the website below for assistance. Other states and provinces may require:

Additional tests, such as Praxis Tests Copies of your MTTC score reports Additional courses (such as a course in the history of the particular state) Application fees A copy of the Michigan Teaching Certificate Official transcripts Criminal background checks or fingerprinting Validation that the candidate has completed a college program (send verification forms to the

Calvin College Certification Coordinator) Details about teacher certification, including websites for other states and provinces, are available at: http://www.calvin.edu/academics/departments-programs/education/certification/ For assistance, contact the Teacher Certification Coordinator at (616) 526-6208 or [email protected] .

Page 13: Education Program Guidebook - Calvin College · This Guidebook will assist you as you plan your program of study. Use it to keep a record of your Use it to keep a record of your progress

13

TEACHING CERTIFICATE DENIAL

Education Program faculty members are dedicated to the success of each candidate. It is, however, possible for a candidate to complete the Teacher Education Program and graduate with a bachelor’s degree without being recommended for certification. The following circumstances may result in denial of teaching certification, at the discretion of the Dean of Education:

1. Unsuccessful performance during the student teaching internship semester.

2. Fraud, material misrepresentation, or concealment in any materials or documents provided to Calvin College and/or the Teacher Education Program.

3. Misdemeanor or felony charges or convictions. Candidates with any convictions and/or charges pending cannot be guaranteed teacher certification. The college will report to the Office of Professional Preparation Services all convictions as well as charges pending at the point an individual requests teacher certification.

14

PLANNING YOUR PROGRAM

In order for you to use your time wisely at Calvin, use the information contained in this booklet and the college catalog to map out over four years which courses you must take and when. Most students spend their first two years at Calvin working on the liberal arts core requirements. Some majors require that you start earlier. The liberal arts core requirements are listed in this booklet along with a chart that you use to make your map. There is also a sample plan for the Special Education Program in the Guidebook. Pay careful attention to the notations in the college catalog telling you when certain courses will be offered. For example, "S" means that the course will be offered only in the spring semester. You should also make the best use of any one or two-hour course requirements by adding these to a normal course load. Keep the map with you during advising and registering. A completed map allows you to make the proper substitutions during the often hectic and stressful registration period when you discover that certain courses have been closed or canceled. Help is available during this time, but you should be aware that some advisors are not as knowledgeable as others about the very complex education program, and the responsibility for taking the proper courses is yours. Making a program map: Collect your Academic Evaluation Report, the Education Program Guidebook, a Calvin catalog, a model

schedule (if your major or minor department provides one), and a program worksheet. Check your AER for accuracy. Check with the Registrar if your AER is not accurate. Make a list of all the courses you still need to take including the number of semester hours of each course.

Separate your list by core, major/minor and EDUC courses. If there is a certain sequence to the courses you need, write them out in that order. (e.g. EDUC 322

before EDUC 326). Make a note by courses that are only offered in fall, interim, or spring. Make a note by courses that are offered regularly in the summer. (e.g. many core courses, as well as

major and minor courses are currently offered each summer). Fill in the program worksheet grid (use pencil or save an electronic copy - you will be adjusting this as you go!):

Fill in your target semester for student teaching first (Note that secondary math student teaching only

occurs in the fall and that many other secondary programs are only offered in the spring). Fill in courses only offered during a particular semester or that require a particular sequence next (e.g.

English 350 must be taken in the fall semester prior to student teaching). Fill in the rest of the spaces in your schedule with your preferred number of semester hours each

semester. Make sure you use interims efficiently. Often electives in your major and/or minor(s) can be fulfilled

during interim.

Have your major/minor and education advisor check your plan for accuracy. Keep multiple copies of your plan and have them handy at advising and registration times.

Note: This plan is just a guide for registration. You are not guaranteed this arrangement of courses. Know which courses can and cannot be switched around for maximum benefit during registration.

ELEMENTARY EDUCATION PROGRAM (K-8)

The Elementary Education Program requires core courses, additional cognate courses, the Elementary Education major, and a disciplinary major and/or minors. Core courses will help you to think more deeply and critically, using the tools of the various disciplines, with the mind and heart of Christ, about the wide range of issues which confront us in today's world. Core courses help you prepare for the variety of roles you will fill beside that of teacher -- citizen, spouse, parent, church member, etc. and solve the problems about which Christians ought to be concerned. The core is relevant to your preparation as a teacher as well, because it will enable you to make instructional decisions with discernment.

SECONDARY EDUCATION PROGRAM (6 - 12)

Students who wish to teach Grades 6-12 or K-12 (offered in art, music, PE, and world languages only) meet the requirements for the liberal arts core, requirements for major and minor concentrations, and requirements for the education sequence. These requirements are all described in the college catalog, which is required reading for every student. Core courses will help you to help you think more deeply and critically, using the tools of the various disciplines, with the mind and heart of Christ, about the wide range of issues which confront us in today's world.

The worksheet below lists the courses that you must take to meet the core liberal arts requirements at Calvin. Please check your Academic Evaluation Report (AER) to determine which exemptions, if any, you received for your high school work.

MAJOR AND MINOR CONCENTRATIONS: SECONDARY EDUCATION

Secondary 6-12 and K-12 Programs

Secondary education students choose a 6-12 or K-12 major and a minor. K-12 art or music students will not need an additional minor. Discuss your options with the appropriate major/minor advisors listed below. Students who major in art, music, physical education, Chinese, French, or Spanish have the option of getting a "K-12 Endorsement" on their secondary teaching certificates. If you intend to teach in one of these content areas, it is to your advantage to get the K-12 Endorsement to allow you more job flexibility. Secondary candidates may select non-certifiable minors (any minor offered at Calvin) with the understanding that the non-certifiable minor will not be listed on the Michigan teaching certificate. As soon as you have chosen your major and minor, meet with the appropriate advisor (listed below) to complete a Declaration of Major and/or Minor Program Form. Make a copy of this form for your records and return it to Academic Services. That office will create your Academic Evaluation Report (AER), listing all courses you need to take to complete the Education Program.

K-12 SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

Students who wish to teach children who have cognitive impairments complete courses for the liberal arts core, a major in Cognitive Impairment, and the professional education sequence for elementary education. These requirements are described on the following pages, and in the College Catalog, which is required reading for all students. Upon completing the program, they will be certified to teach students with cognitive impairments in grades K - 12 as well as non-disabled students in grades K - 5.

Many students who have an interest in special education need more information before they are ready to make a commitment to teaching in this field. Often college students are curious about the variety of professionals who work with exceptional children and about the various preparation programs for these various careers. There are several things you can do to learn more about children who have disabilities and about the professionals who serve them:

1) Examine career resources at the Career Resource Center in the Library; 2) Take EDUC 202-The Learner in the Education Context: Development and Diversity 3) Volunteer through the Service-Learning Center in one of the many local programs serving students

with disabilities; 4) Read books written by people who live with disabilities or by their parents or teachers; 5) Read an overview such as Exceptional Children in Focus, 4th ed., James Patton, et. al.; 6) Make an appointment to see Phil Stegink, advisor for undergraduate special education programs.

Dr. Debra Buursma is the advisor for the graduate program in learning disabilities.

Candidates complete the Elementary Education major, core, and cognate courses in addition to the Special Education major. See the Elementary Education section of this Guidebook for requirements. Students in the special education program must take BIOL 115 in addition to SCES 121 and 122.

SPECIAL EDUCATION: GRADUATE PROGRAM IN LEARNING DISABILITIES

Calvin also offers a Master of Education degree in the area of learning disabilities. A non-degree endorsement program is also possible. Either option satisfies the course requirements for Michigan Professional Certification. Consult with Dr. Debra Buursma in the Education Department.

HONORS PROGRAM

Education Department faculty members strongly encourage qualified students to participate in the Honors Program. Those who enter Calvin with a composite ACT score of at least 29 or an SAT score of 1290 or better or Canadian cumulative marks of 91% or higher are automatically eligible to participate. Continuing students need to have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 to be admitted to the honors program. Graduating with honors in Education requires a minimum overall GPA of 3.5, completion of six approved honors courses, and an Honors Research Project with an Education professor. For more information or to apply to the program, ask an Education Department advisor or visit the Honors Program in Education website: http://www.calvin.edu/academics/departments-programs/education/academics/honors/ .

GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Calvin’s Master of Education programs (M.Ed.) have been designed for experienced teachers and administrators who wish to attend a college that pursues academic excellence. Calvin’s M.Ed. programs are unique in that they provide teachers with the opportunity to integrate a Christian perspective on life and teaching with their understanding of the professional role of the educator. Courses may be used to renew the Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate or to apply for the Michigan Professional Teaching Certificate. Students fulfill program requirements during fall or spring semester evening courses, concentrated summer courses and workshops, and online courses. Calvin offers four M.Ed. programs:

Curriculum and Instruction

Educational Leadership

Learning Disabilities (with or without the Learning Disabilities endorsement)

Literacy (with or without the Reading Specialist endorsement) Calvin also offers endorsement programs in over 30 different subject areas. This program is designed for teachers who wish to add additional subjects to their teaching certificates. Teachers complete all courses required for a minor in the endorsement subject (or a major if a minor is not offered). Teachers will need to pass the MTTC test for the endorsement subject. Master’s and Endorsement students are charged the graduate tuition rate, which is significantly less than the undergraduate tuition rate. Students accepted to the program may also be eligible for financial aid or Education Department scholarships. For additional information, visit the Graduate Studies Website at

http://www.calvin.edu/academics/departments-programs/graduate-studies-in-education/ or contact Cindi

Hoekstra, Graduate Program Coordinator at [email protected] .

Students earning the bilingual Spanish endorsement must major in Spanish and minor in Bilingual Spanish (this requirement does not apply to certified teachers adding the bilingual Spanish endorsement).

All candidates must pass the Spanish Department Proficiency Tests.

If you are interested in a bilingual endorsement program, you must request a bilingual teacher aiding experience in Education 303. SPAN 310 and 340 may count towards both the bilingual minor and the Spanish major. Students who would like to be certified to teach both ESL and bilingual Spanish may complete both programs at Calvin along with the Spanish major. Because of the number of overlapping courses, only one of the minors may appear on the Calvin degree. The other minor will be added as an additional endorsement to the teaching certificate after graduation. Students interested in this option should meet with the Teacher Certification Coordinator to set up a plan. Students must complete field experiences in both ESL and bilingual Spanish settings. These field experiences will be arranged during EDUC 303 and IDIS 301 or completed as an independent study for two semester hours.

Projections indicate that by 2020, 10% of Michigan students will be English Language Learners. Secondary candidates should consider the English major in addition to the ESL minor. IDIS 301 must be taken during the same fall semester as EDUC 302 and 303. The ESL minor may be combined with the language arts minor, but ENGL 370, 372, and 375 may not overlap. In addition to ENGL 370, 372, and 375, the candidate must complete SPAUD 215 or 311 and ENGL 374. When combined with the ESL minor, the language arts minor requires 5 courses (3 cr. each) beyond those already required for elementary education and the ESL minor. The language arts major requires 6 courses (3 cr. each) beyond those already required for elementary education and the ESL minor. The ESL minor may be combined with the Spanish minor, but SPAN 340 may not overlap. In addition to SPAN 340, the candidate must complete ENGL 370. IDIS 356 or 357 may overlap. Two courses may overlap between the language arts major and ESL minor.

Adult learners and teachers in the ESL endorsement program must demonstrate competency in at least one world language. Competency is defined as the successful completion of the equivalent of two years of study in college or four years in high school with a minimum grade of C in each course. Students who would like to be certified to teach both ESL and bilingual Spanish may complete both programs at Calvin along with the Spanish major. Because of overlapping courses, only one of the minors may appear on the Calvin degree. The other minor will be added as an additional endorsement to the teaching certificate after graduation. Students interested in this option should meet with the Teacher Certification Coordinator to set up a plan. Students must complete field experiences in both ESL and bilingual Spanish settings. The field experiences will be arranged during EDUC 303 and IDIS 301 or completed as an independent study for two semester hours.

This is the preferred program for secondary education students wishing to obtain Michigan teacher certification in all of the sciences. Students pursuing this major also complete a minor in one of the four science disciplines (biology, chemistry, earth/space, or physics). Courses in the disciplinary minor may overlap with the courses required for the group major. If you may pursue teacher certification in another state, contact the Teacher Certification Coordinator in the Education Department to see if integrated science is recommended for that state. Students may choose to complete this program as a “Comprehensive Major” without a minor in one of the science disciplines, but this is not recommended.

DEPARTMENTAL REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENT TEACHING

Students must be approved by the Education Department; the major department; and the minor department before being allowed to student teach, along with other requirements such as having a minimum major and minor GPA of 2.5. The following departments have specified criteria that students must meet before they will be approved for student teaching. Students should also check the current college catalog for other departmental requirements.

I. SCIENCE DEPARTMENTS - ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY In order to be admitted to student teaching in one of the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.), or with an integrated science major or minor, a student must be approved by the department representing that discipline. Secondary teacher interns should do their student teaching in their major, although in rare cases they may be allowed to do their student teaching in their minor. Departments are encouraged to consider factors such as the student's maturity, responsibility, interpersonal skills and communication skills in their decision-making process. In addition, the following minimum standards must be met: A. Non-transfer students

1. Completion of at least 5 courses in the sciences toward an approved science studies major or minor, with a minimum grade of C- (1.7) in each of those 5 courses. Passing grades lower than C- are permissible in other courses in the discipline that are part of the major or minor but are not part of the 5 chosen to satisfy this requirement.

2. Cumulative GPA within the sciences of at least 2.5. B. Transfer students

1. Completion of 5 courses in the sciences, 1 of which must be a junior or senior level course taken at Calvin, and which: a) feature no grades lower than C- (1.7). Passing grades lower than C- are permissible in other courses

in the discipline that are part of the major or minor but are not part of the 5 chosen to satisfy this requirement.

b) are part of a science studies major or minor, which has been approved by the Science Division Education Committee or the Elementary Education Science advisor.

2. Cumulative GPA within the sciences of at least 2.5 for transfer courses and Calvin courses separately. C. Students in the Post-BA Program

1. Completion of at least 5 courses in the sciences which: a) feature at least 6 courses with grades of C- (1.7). b) have been approved by the Science Division Education Committee or the Elementary Education

General Science Studies advisor. 2. Cumulative GPA within the sciences of at least 2.5 for Calvin and non-Calvin courses separately.

II. HISTORY AND THE SOCIAL STUDIES - ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY

This area consists of majors and minors in history, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, geography, and social studies, and applies to those in the elementary and secondary teacher education programs. Students with any of these majors and/or minors must meet the following qualifications:

A. The student must have completed at least 6 courses toward an approved major or minor with grades of C- (1.7) or higher and a cumulative GPA in the major or minor of at least 2.5; for transfer students, at least one of these courses must be an upper-level course taken at Calvin.

B. History faculty consider each prospective teacher intern, and favorable recommendations from two professors with whom the student has taken courses in the major or minor (transfer students: one professor) must be granted for the teacher intern to be approved. This recommendation process is completed by the History department; students do not need to solicit recommendations themselves. Recommendations assess intellectual ability as well as the following personal qualities: self-discipline and motivation (e.g. ability to meet deadlines), interpersonal skills (e.g. ability to relate to peers and faculty), and communication skills (e.g. ability to speak and write effectively).

C. The department chairperson will approve all requests for student teaching on the basis of the above criteria. A student may appeal the chairperson's decision to a departmental appeals committee consisting of the supervisor of student teaching and two additional members of his or her choice.

III. SPANISH DEPARTMENT - ELEMENTARY, SECONDARY, AND BILINGUAL EDUCATION

Students in any of these programs with major and/or minors must meet the following qualifications before being approved by the Spanish Department: A. A cumulative GPA of 2.5 in the courses required for the major and/or minor.

Page 83: Education Program Guidebook - Calvin College · This Guidebook will assist you as you plan your program of study. Use it to keep a record of your Use it to keep a record of your progress

83

B. Successful completion of all three portions of the Spanish Department Proficiency Exam: Grammar, Composition, and Oral. The Proficiency Exam is offered by the Spanish Department four times each year, twice in the fall and twice in the spring. For dates and details, see Nora Koster in the Spanish Department. Candidates need a minimum of 80% on the Grammar Exam and need to attain a rating of Advanced Low for both the Composition and the Oral tests.

C. The other factors to be considered in determining approval for student teaching will be evaluated in cooperation with the Education Department.

D. Candidates not approved for student teaching have the right of appeal and should see the Education Department for instructions.

IV. PHYSICAL EDUCATION - ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY

A. Students majoring in Physical Education must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in Physical Education to student teach in Physical Education.

B. Students who minor in Physical Education must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 in Physical Education even though they may not be student teaching in Physical Education.

V. MATHEMATICS AND COMPUTER SCIENCE

A. Standards for Admission to student teaching: All students with elementary or secondary majors or minors in mathematics or computer science must meet the following standards to be approved for Student Teaching. These standards apply to transfer students and to post-baccalaureate students as well as to non-transfer students. 1. Completion of at least 24 semester hours in the approved major or 16 semester hours in the approved

minor, with a minimum grade of C- in each course included to meet the 24-hour or 16-hour total. (Passing grades lower than C- are permissible in courses that are part of the major or minor but are not part of the 24 or 16 hours chosen to satisfy this requirement.) At least 4 of these hours must have been taken at Calvin College.

2. Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 within the approved major or minor, both overall and within Calvin courses in the major or minor.

In addition to these academic standards, the appropriate department, Mathematics or Computer Science, will also consider factors such as the student's maturity, responsibility, interpersonal skills, and communication skills. The appropriate department, Mathematics or Computer Science, shall provide a written explanation each time a student is denied approval. Students not meeting the standards or who are denied approval may appeal in writing to the appropriate department.

B. Monitoring the Progress of Secondary Education Mathematics Majors:

The Mathematics Department has instituted the following policy to monitor the progress of secondary education students with mathematics majors. At the time that such a student's curriculum is brought before the department, the faculty shall discuss any concerns that might jeopardize admission into Student Teaching. In addition to academic standards, the department will also consider factors such as the student's maturity, responsibility, interpersonal skills, and communication skills. If there are sufficient concerns, the department shall take the following actions: 1. Appoint a faculty mentor to work with the student and to keep the student apprised of his or her

progress until the department acts on the eventual application for admission to Student Teaching or until the student withdraws from the teacher education program in mathematics. At the time that the student's application to Student Teaching is brought before the department, the mentor will report back to the department on the student's progress.

2. Notify the student by letter of the department's concern and of the appointment of a mentor.

At the beginning of each semester, the dept. shall distribute a list of students whose approved curricula involve admission to Student Teaching. Any time prior to the application for admission to Student Teaching by the student, the dept. may choose to declare the student in jeopardy of not being admitted to Student Teaching. If so, the dept. shall follow procedures 1 and 2 above.

EDUCATION PROGRAM COMMISSIONING CEREMONY

All students who are completing Calvin’s teacher education program are invited to the Education Program Commissioning Ceremony. Graduates are called forward to receive our congratulations and a memento. The ceremony is held on the Friday evening preceding Calvin's commencement ceremony in May. Parents, relatives, and friends of the graduates are invited to attend this ceremony to join with us in praising God for what He has allowed these students to accomplish.

OFF-CAMPUS OPPORTUNITIES

Interim Abroad: The Education Department occasionally offers an international experience during Interim. Consult the Education section of the Interim catalog for opportunities. For example, “International Teaching in Honduras” has been offered for students who wanted to explore the possibility of international teaching and consider what it means to be a foreigner involved in the education system of a developing country. Students learned about poverty and development work and the strong connection between development and education. They also gained understanding of the history and culture of Honduras. Off-Site Student Teaching: Students interested in student teaching outside of West Michigan may apply for off-site student teaching. Locations vary by semester. Contact Gwen Buteyn in the Education Department if interested ([email protected]). Enrollment is limited. Chicago Semester: The Chicago Semester program is sponsored by Calvin together with Central, Dordt, Hope, Northwestern, and Trinity colleges. The program challenges students to integrate their personal, professional and public lives through urban exposure, academic seminars and a wide range of internships. For education students, this semester is offered to those in the elementary program who wish to do their student teaching in Chicago Public Schools. A visit day is scheduled the semester prior to student teaching to give you an opportunity to visit potential placements. You must be approved by the Education Department and indicate your interest on your student teaching application. For any questions regarding the program, see Gwen Buteyn in the Education Department ([email protected]). Students must apply for this program. Enrollment is limited.

STATEMENT OF COMMITMENT TO PROFESSIONALISM

It is the vision of the Calvin Teacher Education Program to develop responsive and transformative Christian educators who can meet the needs of diverse students in multiple school settings. This vision demands that we uphold the highest standards of excellence in teacher preparation. The standards are based on the virtues that Calvin’s core curriculum is designed to foster: diligence, patience, honesty, courage, charity, creativity, empathy, humility, compassion, justice, faith, hope, and wisdom. A significant component of the preparation of excellent Christian educators is to assist candidates in developing professional commitments. Professional commitments are integrated throughout the Expanded Statement of Professional Goals in our Conceptual Framework. However, there are particular professional commitments that warrant highlighting, including the following: I. A commitment to equity, justice, and the belief that all students can learn. The Conceptual Framework recognizes that teachers must be committed to equity and justice in order to support the learning of all students. Behaviors consistent with this commitment include the following: Candidates respect points of view that differ from their own.

Candidates celebrate diversity among their students as part of God’s plan for creation.

Candidates commit to learning enough about learners, effective pedagogical strategies, and school contexts to make instructional decisions that support the learning of all their students.

Candidates recognize the relevance, purpose, and value of the subject matter(s) they teach.

Candidates are willing to examine their own assumptions about learners, content, curriculum, pedagogy, and contexts and to change these assumptions based on new understandings.

Candidates are committed to transforming educational practices and structures that inhibit equity and justice.

II. A commitment to demonstrating professional behavior in all educational settings. Becoming a professional is an important part of each education course prospective teachers take at Calvin, and as prospective teachers progress through the program professional commitments will become increasingly evident. Behaviors consistent with being a professional include the following: Candidates treat colleagues, faculty, students, and parents with respect in all interactions with them, including

appropriate oral and written communications.

Candidates take responsibility for their own learning and behavior.

Candidates accept constructive feedback and take responsibility for using it to shape their behavior.

Candidates are punctual and consistent in attendance of all classes and field experiences.

Candidates participate actively in class and field experiences. They contribute appropriately to group tasks and complete their work promptly and in a high-quality manner.

Candidates display eagerness and enthusiasm for teaching and learning.

Candidates dress appropriately for professional settings and display a professional demeanor.

Candidates maintain appropriate relationships with peers, teachers, faculty, and students.

The Teacher Education Program has a formal process by which faculty and mentor teachers evaluate the candidate’s growth in knowledge, skills, and commitments. Candidates are also required to engage in self-evaluation in these areas. Faculty and mentor teachers are asked to record their concerns about any candidate’s lack of growth in these knowledge, skills, and dispositions. The TEC Student Support Committee works with identified candidates to develop a plan that addresses and monitors concerns. The purpose of this Statement of Commitment to Professionalism is to identify the professional commitments and behaviors for which candidates are to be held accountable and to ensure that candidates understand that commitments are an important part of their professional growth and development and will be taken into consideration in determining eligibility for entering the program, approval to student teach, and recommendation for certification. These commitments will be discussed in IDIS 205, Education 102, 202, 302-303, 307, 322, 398 and student teaching.
