Education grants to individuals
This information sheet is for prospective applicants to the Grants for the arts programme.
Grants for the arts is a competitive programme and you should read this and any other
relevant guidance, including our ‘How to apply’ booklet (available in print or online), before
you submit your application.
We do not give grants to individuals in statutory further or higher education. This
information sheet suggests some sources of information on funding for study. It is not a
complete list.

For information summaries address basic questions on international study opportunities –
at undergraduate and postgraduate level – in Commonwealth countries. Additional
sources, both books and websites, are also listed.

help, specialising in advice about educational trust funds. They have a database of trusts
and charities.
You should make your first enquiry in writing to the Student Advisor, stating your name and
age, course details, personal circumstances and the nature of your financial difficulty.
They also offer advice about support from education authorities, research councils and
scholarship agencies. They provide information on sponsorships, loans, grants and benefit
regulations.

grants, awards and alternative financial support.

may offer support to students, endowed scholarships and details and guidance on all grants
available from Education Authorities. The library also has access to FunderFinder as well

Career Development Loans Career Development Loans are available from Barclays, The Co-operative Bank and The
Royal Bank of Scotland in partnership with the Learning and Skills Council.
You can apply if you:
x are over 18 years old
x live or intend to train in the UK
x intend to use the education or training to work in the UK or EU
x are not getting funding from any other source for the course.
You can only apply for a course in the UK that is up to two years in length (full-time, part-
time, open or distance learning) as long as it is related to a job you want to do.
Career Development Loans of 80% (100% in some cases) will cover course fees, books,
materials and expenses (living expenses for full-time courses only) and can be from £300 to
£8,000. The Learning and Skills Council pays the interest while you study. You start
repaying the loan (with interest) a month after you have completed the course. You can
defer payment for up to five months after you have finished your course if you are
registered unemployed at the time. For more details contact your local branch of one of the
three banks listed.

Financial help for higher education students There is financial help available for students who live in the UK who want to study on a
Higher Education course. The help is different depending on what part of the UK you
usually live in.

help is available, how much, and how and when you should apply.

If you are an EU national – that is, a national of a member state of the European Union – or
the family member of an EU national, you can get information about the financial support
arrangements while you are studying at college in England from the SLC EU Customer
