Manitoba is at the centre of Canada, a country recognized world-wide as one of the best places to live. Our province is blessed with clean air, brilliant blue skies, beautiful scenery and wide-open spaces.

Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital, is a modern city with all urban amenities in a safe and welcoming environment. Other cities, like Brandon, Thompson, Selkirk and Portage la Prairie, offer the convenience of small, friendly urban communities. Manitoba towns are situated in scenic, peaceful settings, plus, you will find excellent restaurants, clubs, entertainment, health care and recreation facilities in every corner of the province.

You will discover magnificent forests and over 100,000 crystal clear lakes with clean sandy beaches. Manitoba’s distinct landscapes range from rugged wilderness to vast grain fields. Our provincial parks are home to deer, moose, geese, owls, bears, foxes and plenty of other wildlife.

A Unique Location

Manitoba

Citizens from around the world feel at home in Manitoba. We are the most culturally diverse province in Canada, with more than 100 languages spoken. The majority of Manitobans use English as their daily language. French is also a key language in several areas throughout Manitoba. Winnipeg’s French Quarter, St. Boniface, is the largest francophone community in Western Canada.

The history of Manitoba’s Aboriginal people goes back thousands of years. We are very proud of our Aboriginal and multicultural heritage and celebrate our diversity as well as our similarities.

Since the province was established in 1870, Manitoba has welcomed immigrants from every corner of the globe. Canada was the first country in the world to adopt an official multiculturalism policy.

Manitobans celebrate hundreds of multicultural events each year, paying tribute to our French-Canadian, Aboriginal, Asian, European, North and South American and African heritages. Manitobans are known throughout Canada for their friendliness and community spirit. Many of us were once newcomers to the province and we gladly welcome international visitors and new residents.

Internationally renowned ballet, world-class symphony and outstanding theatre are at the core of Manitoba’s arts and culture scene. Classical and contemporary music and dance can be found in major concert centres and small community halls across the province. Traditional and modern theatre groups perform province-wide. Art galleries and exhibits, music and writers’ festivals, architecture and handicrafts are all part of the tradition in Manitoba.

Manitoba’s four distinct seasons – spring, summer, autumn and winter – provide excellent opportunities for sports and recreation. The sun shines year-round.

Hot, lazy summer; fresh, breezy spring; and crisp, clear autumn have Manitobans hiking, fishing, swimming, cycling, bird watching, golfing, picnicking, playing tennis and soccer, canoeing, kayaking, boating and water skiing.

Bright, cold, sunny days transform Manitoba into a snow-covered winter wonderland as skating, ice hockey, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing, snowboarding, dog-sledding, ice fishing and snowmobiling come to the forefront.

Sport fans enjoy the excitement of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers football team, the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Manitoba Moose hockey teams as well as the Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball team.

Manitoba has a high standard of living, steady economic growth, diversified industry and high employment. Our central location and excellent air, rail and road links make Manitoba a gateway to the rest of Canada, North America and the world. Other advantages include Manitoba’s abundant hydroelectric power, rich mineral resources, fertile soil and a skilled and industrious population.

The following are some examples of the diverse range of industries that drive our economy:

• The largest aerospace industry in western Canada with companies such as Boeing Canada Technology, Bristol Aerospace, and Standard Aero Ltd.

• A well-established financial and insurance services sector. The head offices of Investors Group Inc., Canada’s largest mutual fund company, and Great-West Life, the country’s largest insurance company, are both located in Winnipeg.

• Research and development in health and agricultural biotechnology. Manitoba is home to Canada’s first level-four biocontainment laboratory, the Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health; the National Research Council Institute for Biodiagnostics; and the Canadian office of Hilltop Research, the world’s largest consumer product testing firm.

• Manitoba is also the proud site of the future Canadian Museum for Human Rights (2012), a national and international destination and the first of its class in Canada.

• Transportation manufacturing. Manitoba is North America’s largest bus manufacturer with companies such as Motor Coach Industries and New Flyer Industries.

• Information and communications services. CanWest Global, Canada’s leading diversified media company has its head office in the province.

• Agribusiness and food production. Manitoba has long been the centre of the Canadian grain trade and is the headquarters of Cargill Canada, James Richardson and Sons, the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange and the Canadian Wheat Board. Major Canadian food processors such as Maple Leaf Foods, McCain Foods and Can-Oat Milling are found in Manitoba. The Manitoba Agri-Health Research Network, comprised of the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine, the Food Development Centre and The Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals, is establishing Manitoba as an internationally recognized centre in the research, production, marketing and development of agricultural products for health.

Reasonable tuition, rent and transportation costs along with a favourable exchange rate on foreign currency, make Manitoba an economical education option. From electricity bills to food, entertainment and recreation, our cost of living is affordable and our standard of living is high.

Our schools, colleges, universities and language schools welcome international students. You can expect reasonable tuition fees at both public and private high schools as well as at universities and colleges.

International students have many housing options, including Homestays (living with a Manitoba family), student residences, off-campus apartments, shared house rentals and boarding schools. Whatever you prefer, there is an accommodation option that is right for you.

Schools are normally within walking distance and public transportation costs are very affordable offering special rates for students. Manitoba’s health-care services are first-rate. For international students, medical insurance and access to health services are available at a low cost.

To help international students adapt, most institutions offer courses in English as an Additional Language (EAL [also known as ESL]) and French as an Additional Language(FAL [also known as FSL]), as well as support programs and services. Student associations or cultural clubs can put you in touch with other citizens from your country who also live in Manitoba.

Affordable Costs = Great Value

Manitoba offers high quality education at internationally competitive rates in a province that enjoys a low cost of living. Not only does Manitoba have some of the lowest international student tuition fees in Canada, but post-secondary students who graduate and stay to work in Manitoba are eligible for a 60% Tuition Tax Rebate of up to $25,000 CAD. www.manitoba.ca/tuitionrebate

Manitoba schools teach students from 5 to 18 years of age. High schools prepare students aged 14 to 18 for post-secondary education and training or employment after graduation.

Manitoba schools offer 13 grades (Kindergarten to Grade 12), which are grouped as follows:

Senior Years (Grades 9 to 12)

Senior Years schools in Manitoba may use either a full-year (non-semester) system or a semester system to organize their programming. In a full-year system, courses generally run for the full school year, from September to June. In a semester system, the school year is divided into two semesters, from September to January and from February to June.

Public schools are funded and offer courses developed by the Manitoba Government. Many independent or private schools that receive public funds also teach courses approved by the government and may also offer school-developed optional courses or religious study. Both systems are well funded and provide high quality education.

In high school, you can choose from a wide range of academic programs offered in English, Français, or French immersion (a combination of French and English). It is also possible to choose a technology training focus. High school programs are flexible enough to fit your ambitions and requirements. By combining compulsory and elective courses, you can create a balanced and challenging program.

Program Paths

Our education system makes it easy for students to move from one level to the next and offers many advantages:

- From Kindergarten to Doctorate/Ph.D., our system offers quality programming, including English as a Second Language and French as a Second Language courses.

- All schools in our system operate on the same calendar, reducing time between academic sessions.

- Our system is large enough to provide a full range of educational opportunities, yet small enough that members of the educational community are familiar with courses offered around the province.

- Some international students prefer to start their Manitoba education at the high school or English as a Second Language level to help them prepare for future learning.

- A well-developed education plan covering all academic levels can help in obtaining a Study Permit. International students must obtain a Study Permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada if they intend to study in Canada for more than six months.

- Those completing high school in Manitoba and applying to a university or college within Manitoba may qualify for entrance scholarships ranging from $800 to $5,000.

- Members of the Manitoba education community can provide information about opportunities at all levels to assist you with your academic plan.

- Students can choose from instruction that is offered in English or French.
