FALSE?

False. MBA programs draw individuals with a variety ofacademic backgrounds. Diverse backgrounds make for a richlearning experience both inside and outside the classroom.

False. Although admissions professionals review under-graduate transcripts, there are other factors that are just as important in the admissions process—including work experience, GMAT scores, letters of recommendation, application essays, and if applicable, interview results.

False. Programs differ in many respects that may not be obvious to you during the initial phases of your research. As a consumer, you’ll need to do your homework.

Making the decision to pursue an MBA is probably the largest single investment you’ll ever make in yourself…andyou’ll need accurate information to make good choices. Check out www.gmat.org for authoritative information on your options, career paths, and of course, the GMAT.

Undergraduate GPA is the most important factor in the admissions decision.

All MBA programs are pretty much the same.

The GMATThe Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®)is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that is available year-round at test centers throughout the world. The GMATmeasures basic verbal, mathematical, and analytical writingskills that are developed over a long period of time. It isspecifically designed to help graduate schools assess thequalifications of applicants for advanced study in business andmanagement. GMAT scores are used by nearly 1,700 graduatemanagement programs throughout the world, and about1,000 of these programs require GMAT scores from eachapplicant. Your GMAT scores are only one predictor ofacademic performance in the first year of graduate manage-ment school. To find out how your GMAT scores will befactored into the application review process, you shouldcontact the admissions office at the school(s) to which youare applying.

The GMAT does not presuppose any specific knowledgeof business or other specific content areas, nor does it measureachievement in any particular subject areas. The test does notmeasure subjective factors important to academic and careersuccess — such as motivation, creativity, interpersonal skills, study skills, or overall success on the job. Test takers shouldnote that the GMAT is entirely in English and that all instruc-tions are provided in English.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER-ADAPTIVE TEST?In a computer-adaptive test (CAT), questions are selected whileeach individual takes the test. At the start of each multiple-choice section of the GMAT, you are presented a question ofmiddle difficulty. As you answer each question, the computerscores that question and uses that information, as well as yourresponses to any preceding questions and information aboutthe test design, to determine which question to present next. Aslong as you respond correctly to each question, questions ofincreased difficulty typically will be presented. When you enterincorrect responses, the computer typically will present youwith questions of lesser difficulty. Your next question will be theone that best reflects both your previous performance and therequirements of the test design. This means that different testtakers will be given different questions. The selection of ques-tions you will see is based on your responses to all previousquestions, and because the CAT adjusts to your individualability level, you will get few questions that are either too easyor too difficult for you.

Because the computer scores each question before selectingthe next one, you must answer each question when it ispresented. For this reason, once you answer a question andmove on to another, you cannot go back and change youranswer. The computer has already incorporated both youranswer and the requirements of the test design into its selectionof the next question for you.

Each computer-based test section meets preestablished speci-fications, including the types of questions asked and the subjectmatter presented. The statistical characteristics of the questionsanswered correctly and incorrectly, including their difficultylevels, are taken into account in the calculation of scores. Therefore, scores of all test takers can be compared eventhough they received different questions.

WHAT COMPUTER SKILLS DO I NEED?Minimal computer skills are required to complete the GMAT.Before beginning the test you will complete a tutorial that coversusing a mouse, entering a response, using the word processor, accessing the help function, and moving on to the next ques-tion. You will also be able to access the help function at anytime during testing.

WHAT ARE CONDITIONS LIKEAT A TEST CENTER?The GMAT is administered in an individualized environment inthe quiet and privacy of separated testing stations. You willhave the opportunity to take two five-minute breaks, one aftercompleting the essays and another between the quantitativeand verbal sections. For specific information about identifica-tion requirements and test center procedures/regulations, seepage 15. For information about preparing for the test, includ-ing the test format and test-taking suggestions, see page 21.

s Selecting Your Score ReportRecipient (s)Before you begin to take the test, you will have an opportunityto select up to five graduate schools to receive copies of yourscore report. Once you have confirmed your selection you willnot be able to make changes, deletions, or additions. The listof graduate schools is presented in alphabetical order. Please note that graduate schools are listed under the nameof the college or university with which they are associated,e.g., Baruch College is listed as CUNY, Baruch College. You should also be aware that abbreviations are used, e.g.,the United States Air Force Academy is listed as US AirForce Academy.

If you cannot locate a graduate school in the list but theinstitution has instructed you to submit your GMAT scores aspart of their application process, ask the test administrator fora GMAT Score Report Request Form. Complete this formand return it to the test administrator before you leave thecenter.

Getting Your ScoresUpon completing the GMAT, you can choose to see your scoresat the test center for the multiple-choice sections of the test. Anofficial score report, including scores for the Analytical WritingAssessment, will be mailed to you and your designated institu-tions about two weeks after testing. If you do not finish themultiple-choice sections, your score will depend on the numberof questions you answer.

You must respond to both essays and each multiple-choice section of the test to get an official score report.

Canceling Your ScoresScores will not be canceled at your request for any reason oncethey have been reported. However, ETS will honor yourrequest to cancel scores immediately after the test administration.Score cancellations will be reported to the institutions thatyou have selected as score report recipients.

Indicate your decision to cancel on the computer screenimmediately following the last section of the test.

This is the only time that you will have the opportunityto cancel your scores. Other requests to cancel scores willnot be honored. Scores will not be reinstated if you chooseto cancel them.

Notes: ETS cannot honor requests for partial cancellation of scores, for example, cancellation of your GMAT analytical writing score butnot your quantitative score.

Your fee will not be refunded if you have your test scorescanceled.

If you cancel your scores the cancellation will be reportedto all score recipients that you designated. The score cancellationdesignation will be part of your permanent record and reported onall future score reports.

Repeating the TestYou may not take the GMAT more than one time in anycalendar month, even if you have taken the test andcanceled your scores. Test administrators are not authorizedto waive or modify this rule in any way. If you do test morethan once in a calendar month, your new scores will not bereported and your test fee will be forfeited.

Sometimes it is necessary to take the GMAT more thanone time. For example, a management school may requestmore recent scores than you currently have on record. However, unless your scores seem unusually low comparedwith other indicators of your preparation for graduatemanagement study, or unless there are other reasons to believethat you did not do your best on a test for which scores havebeen reported, taking the GMAT again may not be helpful. It is unlikely to result in a substantial increase in your scores, and, in fact, your scores may decrease.

If you repeat the test, your scores from the latest testdate and the two most recent test dates since July 1995will be reported to the institutions you designate as scorerecipients. If you repeat the test and want to send scores tothe school(s) that received your scores previously, you mustreselect the school(s) at the time you take the test, or submitan Additional Score Report Request form afterwards.

Additional Score ReportingYour test fee covers the release of your score report to up to fivegraduate schools selected by you on the day of the test. If youwant to have your scores sent to more than five graduate schools,or, if you later decide that you want your score report sent toother graduate schools, you must use the Additional ScoreReporting Service. You will be charged a fee for each addi-tional score report requested. Requests received withoutpayment will be returned. Reports are processed within threeworking days after the request is received. You will receive aconfirmation score report listing the additional institutionsyou requested.

To order, complete the Additional Score Report Requestform on page 37 and mail to the address on the form (must include payment or

credit card information), or fax to ETS at 609-883-4349 (credit card required), or call 609-771-7330 (credit card required).

Recipients indicated on an Additional Score ReportRequest form cannot be changed or deleted.

The Fine Print

The Fine PrintCANCELLATION OF SCORES BY ETSTest Security Issues. Educational Testing Service strives to report scores thataccurately reflect the performance of every test taker. Accordingly, ETS’sstandards and procedures for administering tests have two primary goals: givingtest takers equivalent opportunities to demonstrate their abilities, and prevent-ing some test takers from gaining an unfair advantage over others. To promotethese objectives, ETS reserves the right to cancel any test score when, in ETS’sjudgment, a testing irregularity occurs, there is an apparent discrepancy ina test taker’s identification, the test taker engages in misconduct, or the scoreis invalid for another reason. Reviews of scores by ETS are confidential. When, for any of the above reasons, ETS cancels a test score that has already beenreported, it notifies score recipients that the score has been canceled, but itdoes not disclose the reason for cancellation unless authorized to do so by thetest taker. This does not necessarily apply in group cases.

Testing Irregularities. “Testing irregularities” refers to problems with theadministration of a test. When testing irregularities occur, they may affect anindividual or groups of test takers. Such problems include, without limitation, administrative errors (such as improper timing, improper seating, defectivematerials, and defective equipment); improper access to test content; andother disruptions of test administrations (such as natural disasters and otheremergencies). When testing irregularities occur, ETS may decline to score thetest, or cancel the test score. When it is appropriate to do so, ETS givesaffected test takers the opportunity to take the test again as soon as possiblewithout charge.

Identification Discrepancies. When, in ETS’s judgment or the judgment of testcenter personnel, there is a discrepancy in a test taker’s identification, the testtaker may be dismissed from the test center; in addition, ETS may decline toscore the test or cancel the test score.

Misconduct. If, in ETS’s judgment, a test taker engages in misconduct inconnection with a test, ETS may dismiss the test taker from the test center, decline to score the test, or cancel the test score. Misconduct includes, but isnot limited to the following:

obtaining improper access to the test, a part of the test, or informationabout the test

referring to, looking through, or working on any test, or test section, otherthan during the testing period for that test or test section

using any prohibited aids in connection with the test taking food or drink into the testing room leaving the testing room without permission attempting in any manner to remove from the test room any test materials

or notes relating to the test attempting to give or receive assistance, or otherwise communicate, in any

form, with another person about the test, during the test administration attempting to take the test for someone else creating a disturbance failing to follow any of the test administration regulations described

in this Bulletin, given by the test administrator, or specified in anytest materials

Invalid Scores. ETS may also cancel scores if, in its judgment, there is substantialevidence that they are invalid for any other reason. Before canceling scorespursuant to this paragraph, ETS notifies the test taker in writing about itsconcerns, gives the test taker an opportunity to submit information that addressesETS’s concerns, considers any such information submitted, and offers the testtaker a choice of options. The options include voluntary score cancellation, a freeretest, or arbitration in accordance with ETS’s standard arbitration agreement. In addition, the test taker is sent a copy of the booklet Why and How EducationalTesting Service Questions Test Scores, which explains this process in greater detail.(This booklet is available to any test taker at any time on request.)

Note: The retest option is not available outside the United States orCanada. The arbitration option is available only for tests administered inthe United States.

RELEASING YOUR SCORESETS recognizes the right of individuals to privacy with regard to informationsupplied by and about them that may be stored in ETS files and the concomi-tant responsibility to safeguard information in its files from unauthorizeddisclosure. Confidentiality guidelines established by ETS and agreed to by theGraduate Management Admission Council have been in effect for many years.

To protect your right to control the distribution of your scores, reportswill be released only at your specific request; every recipient must bedesignated by you. ETS will not release any data at the request of institutionsor fellowship agencies except for use in research studies that are approved by theGraduate Management Admission Council and that preserve your anonymityand that of the institution(s) you have attended.

Because scores that are more than five years old present special interpretationproblems, many institutions will not accept them. At your request, the GMATprogram will release scores for tests you took between October 1980 and June1995 but will send with the score report a statement indicating the specialnature of the scores. Some institutions may require applicants to take theGMAT again and supply more current scores. All data retained at ETS aresubject to GMAC policies on confidentiality described in this Bulletin.

GMAT scores are measurement information. They are not the property ofthe examinee, but the use, reporting, and cancellation of scores are subject tovarious rights and restrictions as indicated in this Bulletin.

HOW SCHOOLS USE AND INTERPRET SCORESGMAT scores have two important characteristics:

They are reliable measures of certain developed skills that have been foundto be important in the study of management at the graduate level. Inrepeated studies, GMAT scores have been consistently found to be good, although imperfect, predictors of academic success in the first year of studyat graduate schools of management.

Unlike undergraduate averages, which vary in their meaning according to thegrading standards of each institution, GMAT scores are based on the samestandard for all examinees.

Graduate Schools of Management: The Graduate Management AdmissionCouncil has published guidelines for the use of GMAT scores. The guidelinesare provided to all graduate management schools that use GMAT scores andare included on page 30.

Because the test alone does not measure all the characteristics related tosuccess in graduate school, admissions officers usually use GMAT scores asonly one source of information about an applicant. Evidence indicates thatthe undergraduate record and information obtained from applications, interviews, and letters of recommendation are often other good predicators ofsuccess. For this reason, admissions officers use GMAT scores in conjunctionwith other such information.

Each school evaluates the scores in its own way; there are no set passing orfailing scores. Your performance can be related to that of the original 1954scales, the total testing population for the past three years (percentile scores),or others applying to the same school (local norms).

Undergraduate Institutions: Your undergraduate adviser receives your scoresif you so designate and if your school participates in the UndergraduateRoster Service. By evaluating your scores and your undergraduate record andaverage, your adviser can make sound recommendations about your opportuni-ties for graduate study in management and may be able to suggest schools thatwould be the most suitable for you. If you are unsure whether to have yourscores sent to your undergraduate institution, check with your undergraduatecounseling office.

RESCORING SERVICE FOR ESSAYSIf you have reason to believe that your essay scores are not accurate, you mayrequest that your essays be rescored. For a fee of $45 your essays will berescored by independent readers.

Requests for rescoring must be made within six months of your test date. Arequest received more than six months after the test date will not be honored. The multiple-choice sections of the test cannot be rescored.

You may request this service by either telephone or fax if paying by creditcard. Otherwise, enclose a check made payable to ETS-GMAT with yourGMAT registration/identification number, your date of birth, and your SocialSecurity number (if you included it in your biographical information). Also, explain why you feel rescoring is necessary. Mail your request to GMAT,Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6102, Princeton, NJ 08541-6102, andon your letter note: “Attention: GMAT Rescoring Service.”

Rescoring may result in increases or decreases in your scores. If there is adiscrepancy between the original and the later scores, ETS rescoring results willbe final. Revised results will be sent to you and the management schools youdesignated. You will be notified of the results of the rescoring within aboutthree weeks of receipt of your request at ETS.

GRADUATE MANAGEMENT ADMISSION SEARCH SERVICESM

Test PreparationTest Preparation for theGMATBoth the Graduate Management Admission Council andEducational Testing Service believe that it is important for allcandidates taking the GMAT to be familiar with the kindsof questions asked on the test. In this section of the Bulletin, you will find the complete set of instructions and samplequestions for each type of question that may be on the test. This section also contains test-taking suggestions.

Visit the MBA Explorer Web site at www.gmat.org foradditional samples of actual GMAT questions. Other ways toprepare for the GMAT include using POWERPREP Software orThe Official Guide for GMAT Review or attending test prepara-tion courses. GMAT is not aware of any evidence, however, that these methods improve familiarity with the GMAT anybetter than would reviewing the sample questions andinstructions in this Bulletin.

The GMAT FormatThe GMAT includes verbal, quantitative, and analyticalwriting sections. Data Sufficiency and Problem Solvingquestions are mingled throughout the quantitative section, and Sentence Correction, Reading Comprehension, andCritical Reasoning questions are mingled throughout theverbal section. The verbal and quantitative sections aremultiple-choice and computer-adaptive, as described on page5. For the analytical writing section of the test you will bepresented with two essay topics and will write your responsesusing the computer keyboard. The following chart providestiming information for each section of the test.

Questions Timing

Computer Tutorials Not Applicable Not Applicable

Analytical WritingAnalysis of an Issue 1 Topic 30 min.Analysis of an Argument 1 Topic 30 min.

The quantitative section of the GMAT measures basicmathematical skills and understanding of elementaryconcepts, and the ability to reason quantitatively, solvequantitative problems, and interpret graphic data. The verbalsection of the test measures the ability to understand andevaluate what is read and to recognize basic conventions ofstandard written English. The analytical writing section of thetest measures the ability to think critically and communicatecomplex ideas through writing.

Individual test questions are reviewed to eliminatelanguage, symbols, or content considered to be potentiallyoffensive or inappropriate for major subgroups of the test-taking population or that serve to perpetuate any negativeattitude about these subgroups. In addition, statisticalprocedures are applied to help identify questions that maybe unfair.

Test-taking Suggestions Use the allotted testing time wisely by becoming familiar

with the mechanics of the test and the kinds of materials, questions, and directions in the test. Become familiar withthe formats and requirements of each section of the test.Once you start the test, an onscreen clock display willcontinuously count down the remaining time. You can hidethis display if you want, but it is a good idea to check theclock periodically to monitor your progress. The clock willautomatically alert you when 5 minutes remain in theallotted time for the section you are working on.

Read all test directions carefully. The directions explainexactly what is required in order to answer each questiontype. To review directions during the test, click on the Helpicon, but be aware that this will count against your allottedtime for that section of the test.

Read each question carefully and thoroughly. Beforeanswering a question, determine exactly what is being asked, then eliminate the wrong answers and select the best choice.Never skim a question or the possible answers; skimmingmay cause you to miss important information or nuances. However, if you do not know the correct answer, or if thequestion is too time-consuming, try to eliminate choicesyou know are wrong, select the best of the remaininganswer choices, and move on to the next question. Keepmoving through the test and try to finish each section. There is a chance that guessing at the end of the test canseriously lower your score. The best strategy is to paceyourself so that you have time to consider each testquestion, so you don’t have to guess.

Once you have selected your answer to a question you willbe asked to confirm it. You should confirm your answeronly when you’re certain that you want to move on to thenext question. You cannot omit questions or go back andchange answers. The computer selects the next questionyou see from a large pool of available questions basedupon your previous responses.

Pace yourself so that you have enough time to answerevery question. Pay attention to the number of questionsand the amount of time remaining during your testingsession (see chart on this page). On average, you haveabout 13/4 minutes for each verbal question and about 2minutes for each quantitative question. (If you do not finishin the allotted time, you will still get a score as long as you’ve worked onevery section. However, your score will reflect the number of questionsanswered, and most test takers get higher scores when they finish each section.)

Your scores will depend on the statistical characteristics ofthe questions presented to you, including difficulty level, your answers to those questions, and the number ofquestions you answer. Adaptive test score calculations donot assign any differential credit to questions depending onwhere they appear in the test. The questions in an adaptivetest are weighted according to their difficulty and otherstatistical properties, not according to their position in thetest. However, since the test is adaptive, the responsesprovided to early questions do influence the selection oflater questions.

To prepare for the analytical writing section, practice withthe sample writing topics in this Bulletin. Additionaltopics are included on the MBA Explorer Web site(www.gmat.org) and in The Official Guide for GMAT Review. These topics may appear in your actual GMAT. You willhave 30 minutes to compose each essay using the wordprocessor, which you can practice on before you start thetest (see “Tutorials” on the next page).

Multiple-Choice QuestionsREADING COMPREHENSIONThe questions in this group are based on the content of apassage. After reading the passage, choose the best answer toeach question. Answer all questions following the passage onthe basis of what is stated or implied in the passage.

SAMPLE PASSAGEStudies of the Weddell seal in the laboratory have described

the physiological mechanisms that allow the seal to cope withthe extreme oxygen deprivation that occurs during its longestdives, which can extend 500 meters below the ocean’s surfaceand last for over 70 minutes. Recent field studies, however, suggest that during more typical dives in the wild, this seal’sphysiological behavior is different.

In the laboratory, when the seal dives below the surface ofthe water and stops breathing, its heart beats more slowly, requiring less oxygen, and its arteries become constricted, ensuring that the seal’s blood remains concentrated near thoseorgans most crucial to its ability to navigate underwater. Theseal essentially shuts off the flow of blood to other organs, which either stop functioning until the seal surfaces or switchto an anaerobic (oxygen-independent) metabolism. The latterresults in the production of large amounts of lactic acid whichcan adversely affect the pH of the seal’s blood, but since theanaerobic metabolism occurs only in those tissues which havebeen isolated from the seal’s blood supply, the lactic acid isreleased into the seal’s blood only after the seal surfaces, whenthe lungs, liver, and other organs quickly clear the acid fromthe seal’s bloodstream.

Recent field studies, however, reveal that on dives in thewild, the seal usually heads directly for its prey and returns to

the surface in less than twenty minutes. The absence of highlevels of lactic acid in the seal’s blood after such dives suggeststhat during them, the seal’s organs do not resort to theanaerobic metabolism observed in the laboratory, but aresupplied with oxygen from the blood. The seal’s longer excur-sions underwater, during which it appears to be eitherexploring distant routes or evading a predator, do evoke thediving response seen in the laboratory. But why do the seal’slaboratory dives always evoke this response, regardless of theirlength or depth? Some biologists speculate that because inlaboratory dives the seal is forcibly submerged, it does notknow how long it will remain underwater and so prepares forthe worst.

SAMPLE QUESTIONS

1. The passage provides information to support which ofthe following generalizations?

(A) Observations of animals’ physiological behavior inthe wild are not reliable unless verified by laboratorystudies.

(B) It is generally less difficult to observe the physiologi-cal behavior of an animal in the wild than in thelaboratory.

(C) The level of lactic acid in an animal’s blood is likelyto be higher when it is searching for prey than whenit is evading predators.

(D) The level of lactic acid in an animal’s blood is likelyto be lowest during those periods in which itexperiences oxygen deprivation.

(E) The physiological behavior of animals in a labora-tory setting is not always consistent with theirphysiological behavior in the wild.

2. It can be inferred from the passage that by describing theWeddell seal as preparing “for the worst” (lines 36-37),biologists mean that it

(A) prepares to remain underwater for no longer thantwenty minutes

(B) exhibits physiological behavior similar to that whichcharacterizes dives in which it heads directly for itsprey

(C) exhibits physiological behavior similar to that whichcharacterizes its longest dives in the wild

(D) begins to exhibit predatory behavior(E) clears the lactic acid from its blood before attempting

to dive

3. The passage suggests that during laboratory dives, the pHof the Weddell seal’s blood is not adversely affected by theproduction of lactic acid because

(A) only those organs that are essential to the seal’sability to navigate underwater revert to an anaerobicmechanism

(B) the seal typically reverts to an anaerobic metabolismonly at the very end of the dive

(C) organs that revert to an anaerobic metabolism aretemporarily isolated from the seal’s bloodstream

(D) oxygen continues to be supplied to organs that clearlactic acid from the seal’s bloodstream

(E) the seal remains submerged for only short periods oftime

4. Which of the following best summarizes the main pointof the passage?

(A) Recent field studies have indicated that descriptionsof the physiological behavior of the Weddell sealduring laboratory dives are not applicable to its mosttypical dives in the wild.

(B) The Weddell seal has developed a number of uniquemechanisms that enable it to remain submerged atdepths of up to 500 meters for up to 70 minutes.

(C) The results of recent field studies have made itnecessary for biologists to revise previous perceptionsof how the Weddell seal behaves physiologicallyduring its longest dives in the wild.

(D) Biologists speculate that laboratory studies of thephysiological behavior of seals during dives lastingmore than twenty minutes would be more accurate ifthe seals were not forcibly submerged.

(E) How the Weddell seal responds to oxygen depriva-tion during its longest dives appears to depend onwhether the seal is searching for prey or avoidingpredators during such dives.

5. According to the author, which of the following is true ofthe laboratory studies mentioned in line 1?

(A) They fail to explain how the seal is able to toleratethe increased production of lactic acid by organs thatrevert to an anaerobic metabolism during its longestdives in the wild.

(B) They present an oversimplified account of mecha-nisms that the Weddell seal relies on during itslongest dives in the wild.

(C) They provide evidence that undermines the view thatthe Weddell seal relies on an anaerobic metabolismduring its most typical dives in the wild.

(D) They are based on the assumption that Weddell sealsrarely spend more than twenty minutes underwateron a typical dive in the wild.

(E) They provide an accurate account of the physiologi-cal behavior of Weddell seals during those dives inthe wild in which they are either evading predators orexploring distant routes.

6. The passage suggests that because Weddell seals areforcibly submerged during laboratory dives, they do whichof the following?

(A) Exhibit the physiological responses that are charac-teristic of dives in the wild that last less than twentyminutes.

(B) Exhibit the physiological responses that are charac-teristic of the longer dives they undertake in thewild.

(C) Cope with oxygen deprivation less effectively thanthey do on typical dives in the wild.

(D) Produce smaller amounts of lactic acid than they doon typical dives in the wild.

(E) Navigate less effectively than they do on typical divesin the wild.

CRITICAL REASONINGFor this question, select the best of the answer choices given.

7. There are fundamentally two possible changes in aneconomy that will each cause inflation unless othercompensating changes also occur. These changes are eitherreductions in the supply of goods and services or increasesin demand. In a prebanking economy the quantity ofmoney available, and hence the level of demand, isequivalent to the quantity of gold available.

If the statements above are true, then it is also true that ina prebanking economy

(A) any inflation is the result of reductions in the supplyof goods and services

(B) if other factors in the economy are unchanged, increasing the quantity of gold available will lead toinflation

(C) if there is a reduction in the quantity of goldavailable, then, other things being equal, inflationmust result

(D) the quantity of goods and services purchasable by agiven amount of gold is constant

(E) whatever changes in demand occur, there will becompensating changes in the supply of goods andservices

8. Which of the following best completes the argumentbelow?

One effect of the introduction of the electric refrigeratorwas a collapse in the market for ice. Formerly household-ers had bought ice to keep their iceboxes cool and thefood stored in the iceboxes fresh. Now the iceboxes coolthemselves. Similarly, the introduction of crops geneticallyengineered to be resistant to pests will -------.

(A) increase the size of crop harvests(B) increase the cost of seeds(C) reduce demand for chemical pesticides(D) reduce the value of farmland(E) reduce the number of farmers keeping livestock

9. Since 1975 there has been in the United States a dramaticdecline in the incidence of traditional childhood diseasessuch as measles. This decline has been accompanied by anincreased incidence of Peterson’s disease, a hitherto rareviral infection, among children. Few adults, however, havebeen affected by the disease.

Which of the following, if true, would best help toexplain the increased incidence of Peterson’s diseaseamong children?

(A) Hereditary factors determine in part the degree towhich a person is susceptible to the virus that causesPeterson’s disease.

(B) The decrease in traditional childhood diseases andthe accompanying increase in Peterson’s disease havenot been found in any other country.

(C) Children who contract measles develop an immunityto the virus that causes Peterson’s disease.

(D) Persons who did not contract measles in childhoodmight contract measles in adulthood, in which casethe consequences of the disease would generally bemore severe.

(E) Those who have contracted Peterson’s disease are atincreased risk of contracting chicken pox.

An annually conducted, nationwide survey shows a continuingmarked decline in the use of illegal drugs by high schoolseniors over the last three years.

10. Which of the following, if true, casts most doubt on therelevance of the survey results described above for draw-ing conclusions about illegal drug use in the teen-agepopulation as a whole?

(A) Because of cuts in funding, no survey of illegal druguse by high school seniors will be conducted nextyear.

(B) The decline uncovered in the survey has occurreddespite the decreasing cost of illegal drugs.

(C) Illegal drug use by teen-agers is highest in those areasof the country where teen-agers are least likely tostay in high school for their senior year.

(D) Survey participants are more likely now than theywere three years ago to describe as “heroic” peoplewho were addicted to illegal drugs and have been ableto quit.

(E) The proportion of high school seniors who say thatthey strongly disapprove of illegal drug use hasdeclined over the last three years.

11. Which of the following, if true, would provide mostsupport for concluding from the survey results describedabove that the use of illegal drugs by people below the ageof 20 is declining?

(A) Changes in the level of drug use by high schoolseniors are seldom matched by changes in the level ofdrug use by other people below the age of 20.

(B) In the past, high school seniors were consistently thepopulation group most likely to use illegal drugs andmost likely to use them heavily.

(C) The percentage of high school seniors who useillegal drugs is consistently very similar to thepercentage of all people below the age of 20 whouse illegal drugs.

(D) The decline revealed by the surveys is the result ofdrug education programs specifically targeted atthose below the age of 20.

(E) The number of those surveyed who admit to havingsold illegal drugs has declined even faster than hasthe number who have used drugs.

12. In elections in the United States, the proper role of thepress is to cover only those factors in the campaign whichbear on the eventual outcome. Since the outcome isinvariably a victory for the candidate of one of the twomajor parties, the press should not cover the campaigns ofcandidates of minor parties.

The argument above relies on which of the followingassumptions?

(A) The press has an obligation to cover the candidatesof the two major parties because these candidates arelikely to be better known to the public than arecandidates of minor parties.

(B) It is unlikely that there will be more than threecandidates in any given race.

(C) Many eligible voters do not bother to vote, and ofthose who do not vote, some would probably havesupported a candidate of a minor party.

(D) The number of votes cast for a candidate of a minorparty is not likely to affect the outcome of thecontest between the candidates of the two majorparties.

(E) Supporters of candidates of minor parties are lesslikely to be influenced by the press than are support-ers of candidates of the two major parties.

DATA SUFFICIENCYThis data sufficiency problem consists of a question and twostatements, labeled (1) and (2), in which certain data aregiven. You have to decide whether the data given in thestatements are sufficient for answering the question. Using thedata given in the statements plus your knowledge of math-ematics and everyday facts (such as the number of days in Julyor the meaning of counterclockwise), you must indicate whether statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone

is not sufficient to answer the question asked; statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone

is not sufficient to answer the question asked; BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient

to answer the question asked, but NEITHER statementALONE is sufficient;

 EACH statement ALONE is sufficient to answer thequestion asked;

statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficientto answer the question asked, and additional data specific tothe problem are needed.

Numbers: All numbers used are real numbers.

Figures: A figure accompanying a data sufficiency problemwill conform to the information given in thequestion, but will not necessarily conform to theadditional information given in statements (1)and (2).

Lines shown as straight can be assumed to bestraight and lines that appear jagged can also beassumed to be straight.

You may assume that the positions of points, angles, regions, etc., exist in the order shown andthat angle measures are greater than zero.

All figures lie in a plane unless otherwise indicated.

25

Note: In data sufficiency problems that ask for the valueof a quantity, the data given in the statements aresufficient only when it is possible to determineexactly one numerical value for the quantity.

Example:In ∆PQR, what isthe value of x ?(1) PQ = PR(2) y = 40

Explanation: According to statement (1), PQ PR; therefore,∆PQR is isosceles and y z. Since x + y + z 180, itfollows that x + 2y 180. Since statement (1) does not givea value for y, you cannot answer the question using statement(1) alone. According to statement (2), y 40; thereforex + z 140. Since statement (2) does not give a value for z,you cannot answer the question using statement (2) alone.Using both statements together, since x + 2y 180 and thevalue of y is given, you can find the value of x. Therefore,BOTH statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are sufficient toanswer the question, but NEITHER statement ALONE issufficient.

The lettered answer choices that follow are for yourconvenience in using the answer key on page 27.

(A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement(2) alone is not sufficient .

(B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement(1) alone is not sufficient.

(C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, butNEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.

(D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.(E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT

sufficient.

ANALYSIS OF AN ARGUMENT — SAMPLE TOPICIn this section, you will be asked to write a critique of theargument presented. You are NOT being asked to present your ownviews on the subject.

WRITING YOUR RESPONSE: Take a few minutes toevaluate the argument and plan a response before you beginwriting. Be sure to organize your ideas and develop them fully, but leave time to reread your response and make any revisionsthat you think are necessary.

EVALUATION OF YOUR RESPONSE: College anduniversity faculty members from various subject-matter areas, including management education, will evaluate the overall qualityof your thinking and writing. They will consider how well you

organize, develop, and express your ideas about theargument presented

provide relevant supporting reasons and examples control the elements of standard written English

The following appeared as part of an article in a dailynewspaper.

“The computerized onboard warning system that will be in-stalled in commercial airliners will virtually solve the problem ofmidair plane collisions. One plane’s warning system can re-ceive signals from another’s transponder — a radio set thatsignals a plane’s course — in order to determine the likelihoodof a collision and recommend evasive action.”

Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In yourdiscussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the useof evidence in the argument. For example, you may need toconsider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinkingand what alternative explanations or counterexamples mightweaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort ofevidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changesin the argument would make it more logically sound, and what,if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.

ANALYSIS OF AN ARGUMENT — SCORING GUIDE

SCORE

6 OUTSTANDING

A 6 paper presents a cogent, well-articulated critique ofthe argument and demonstrates mastery of the elementsof effective writing.

A typical paper in this category

— clearly identifies important features of the argumentand analyzes them insightfully

— develops ideas cogently, organizes them logically, and connects them with clear transitions

— effectively supports the main points of the critique— demonstrates control of language, including diction

and syntactic variety— demonstrates facility with the conventions of

standard written English but may have minor flaws

5 STRONG

A 5 paper presents a well-developed critique of theargument and demonstrates good control of theelements of effective writing.

A typical paper in this category

— clearly identifies important features of the argumentand analyzes them in a generally thoughtful way

— develops ideas clearly, organizes them logically, andconnects them with appropriate transitions

— sensibly supports the main points of the critique— demonstrates control of language, including diction

and syntactic variety— demonstrates facility with the conventions of

standard written English but may have occasionalflaws

4 ADEQUATE

A 4 paper presents a competent critique of theargument and demonstrates adequate control of theelements of writing.

A typical paper in this category

— identifies and analyzes important features of theargument

— develops and organizes ideas satisfactorily but maynot connect them with transitions

— supports the main points of the critique— demonstrates sufficient control of language to

convey ideas with reasonable clarity— generally follows the conventions of standard

written English but may have flaws

3 LIMITEDA 3 paper demonstrates some competence in analyticalwriting skills and in its control of the elements ofwriting but is plainly flawed.A typical paper in this category exhibits one or more ofthe following characteristics:— does not identify or analyze most of the important

features of the argument, although some analysis ofthe argument is present

— mainly analyzes tangential or irrelevant matters, orreasons poorly

— is limited in the logical development and organiza-tion of ideas

— offers support of little relevance and value forpoints of the critique

— does not convey meaning clearly— contains occasional major errors or frequent minor

errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics

2 SERIOUSLY FLAWEDA 2 paper demonstrates serious weaknesses in analyticalwriting skills.A typical paper in this category exhibits one or more ofthe following characteristics:— does not present a critique based on logical analysis,

but may instead present the writer’s own views onthe subject

— does not develop ideas, or is disorganized and illogical— provides little, if any, relevant or reasonable support— has serious and frequent problems in the use of

language and in sentence structure— contains numerous errors in grammar, usage, and

mechanics that interfere with meaning

1 FUNDAMENTALLY DEFICIENTA 1 paper demonstrates fundamental deficiencies inanalytical writing skills.A typical paper in this category exhibits more than one ofthe following characteristics:— provides little evidence of the ability to understand

and analyze the argument— provides little evidence of the ability to develop an

organized response— has severe and persistent errors in language and

sentence structure— contains a pervasive pattern of errors in grammar,

usage, and mechanics that results in incoherence0 Off-topic, in a foreign language, merely attempts to

copy the topic, or consists only of keystroke charactersNR Blank

Guidelines for the Use ofGMAT ScoresIntroductionThese guidelines have been prepared to provide information aboutappropriate score use for those who interpret scores and set criteriafor admission and to protect students from unfair decisions based oninappropriate use of scores.

The guidelines are based on several policy and psychometricconsiderations.

The Graduate Management Admission Council has an obligationto inform users of the scores’ strengths and limitations, and theusers have a concomitant obligation to use the scores in anappropriate, rather than the most convenient, manner.

The purpose of any testing instrument, including the GraduateManagement Admission Test, is to provide information to assist inmaking decisions; the test alone should not be presumed to be adecision maker.

GMAT test scores are but one of a number of sources of infor-mation and should be used, whenever possible, in combinationwith other information and, in every case, with full recognition ofwhat the test can and cannot do.

The primary asset of the GMAT is that it provides a commonmeasure, administered under standard conditions, with knownreliability, validity, and other psychometric qualities, for evaluatingthe academic skills of many individuals. The GMAT has two primarylimitations: (1) it cannot and does not measure all the qualitiesimportant for graduate study in management and other pursuits; (2)there are psychometric limitations to the test — for example, onlyscore differences of certain magnitudes are reliable indicators ofreal differences in performance. Such limits should be taken intoconsideration as GMAT scores are used.

Specific Guidelines1. In recognition of the test’s limitations, use multiple criteria. The GMAT

itself does not measure every discipline-related skill necessary foracademic work, nor does it measure subjective factors importantto academic and career success, such as motivation, creativity, andinterpersonal skills. Therefore, all available pertinent informationabout an applicant must be considered before a selection decisionis made, with GMAT scores being only one of these criteria.

2. Interpret the analytical writing score on the basis of the criteria and standardsestablished in the GMAT Scoring Guides. These criteria and standardsare the best source for interpreting the analytical writing score.Recognize that the score is based on two 30-minute writtenresponses that represent first-draft writing samples. Each responseis evaluated according to the scoring guides, although the averagescore can result from different combinations of ratings. Forexample, a test taker whose individual ratings are 5 and 6 on thefirst topic and 3 and 3 on the second topic for an average scoreof 4.5 (rounded to the nearest half-point interval) receives thesame score as a student whose individual ratings are 5 and 5 onthe first topic and 4 and 4 on the second topic.

3. Establish the relationship between GMAT scores and performance in yourgraduate management school. It is incumbent on any institution usingGMAT scores in the admissions process that it demonstrateempirically the relationship between test scores and measures ofperformance in its academic program. Data should be collectedand analyzed to provide information about the predictive validityof GMAT scores and their appropriateness for the particular useand in the particular circumstances at the score-using school. In addition, any formula used in the admissions process thatcombines test scores with other criteria should be validated andreviewed regularly to determine whether the weights attached

to the particular measures are appropriate for optimizing theprediction of performance in the program.

4. Avoid the use of cutoff scores. The use of arbitrary cutoff scores(below which no applicant will be considered for admission) isstrongly discouraged, primarily for the reasons cited in theintroduction to these guidelines. Distinctions based on scoredifferences not substantial enough to be reliable should beavoided. (For information about reliability, see the GMATExaminee Score Interpretation Guide.) Cutoff scores should be usedonly if there is clear empirical evidence that a large proportion ofthe applicants scoring below the cutoff scores have substantialdifficulty doing satisfactory graduate work. In addition, it isincumbent on the school to demonstrate that the use of cutoffscores does not result in the systematic exclusion of members ofeither sex, of any age or ethnic groups, or of any other relevantgroups in the face of other evidence that would indicate theircompetence or predict their success.

5. Do not compare GMAT scores with those on other tests. GMAT scorescannot be derived from scores on other tests. The GMAT is notintended to be parallel to graduate admission tests offered byother testing programs.

6. Interpret scores of persons with disabilities cautiously. The GMAT isoffered with reasonable accommodations designed to meet theneeds of examinees with documented disabilities. Becausenonstandard test administrations are conducted under varyingconditions and for only a small number of test takers, the degreeof comparability of the resulting scores with those achievedunder standard conditions is not known. When extended testingtime is approved, a statement is included with the score reportindicating that the test was taken under nonstandard testingconditions. Final responsibility for interpreting scores will restwith the score report recipient. Separate percentiles are notavailable for interpreting the scores of test takers who test undernonstandard conditions.

Normally Appropriate Uses of GMAT Scores1. For selection of applicants for graduate study in management. A person’s

GMAT scores tell how the person performed on a test designedto measure general verbal and quantitative abilities that areassociated with success in the first year of study at graduateschools of management and that have been developed over a longperiod of time. The scores can be used in conjunction with otherinformation to help estimate performance in a graduate manage-ment program.

2. For selection of applicants for financial aid based on academic potential.

3. For counseling and guidance. Undergraduate counselors, if theymaintain appropriate records, such as the test scores andundergraduate grade point averages of their students acceptedby various graduate management programs, may be able to helpstudents estimate their chances of acceptance at given graduatemanagement schools.

Normally Inappropriate Uses of GMAT Scores1. As a requisite for awarding a degree. The GMAT is designed to measure

broadly defined verbal and quantitative skills and is primarilyuseful for predicting success in graduate management schools. The use of the test for anything other than selection for graduatemanagement study, financial aid awards, or counseling andguidance is to be avoided.

2. As a requirement for employment, for licensing or certification to perform a job,or for job-related rewards (raises, promotions, etc.). For the reasons listedin number 1 above, the use of the GMAT for these purposes isinappropriate. Further, approved score-receiving institutions arenot permitted to make score reports available for any of thesepurposes.

3. As an achievement test. The GMAT is not designed to assess anapplicant’s achievement or knowledge in specific subject areas.
