Charles Rennie Mackintosh is one of the most important designers of the 20th Century, and his individual style has become one of the most recognised of his generation. He was the fourth of eleven children born into a working class family that lived in the Townhead area in the east end of Glasgow, close to Glasgow Cathedral.

Mackintosh and his extraordinary influence is a valuable resource for formal and informal learning. His work can inspire new ways of working in art, design, architecture and craft for all ages and abilities.

Museums, galleries and heritage venues offer innovative, dynamic and effective learning experiences supported by unique resources. They bring learners into direct contact with real Mackintosh objects, paintings, furniture, drawings, plans and buildings. Regarded as Mackintosh’s architectural ‘masterwork’, The Glasgow School of Art continues to operate as was always intended, as a working art school. In addition, many of its celebrated interiors are publicly accessible through student-led guided tours and a new Archives and Collections Centre provides dedicated facilities for research.

The Hunterian’s world class collections provide inspiration for a wide range of formal and informal learning opportunities including hands-on multi-disciplinary workshops for schools, learning resources, collaborative projects with other organisations, talks, tours and family events. Events for schools can be adapted to suit all ages and abilities.

House for an Art Lover represents one of the most exciting pieces of recent research on Glasgow’s most famous architect and provides an excellent resource for visitors as a cultural attraction and education resource. Mackintosh’s last major commission was to remodel the Georgian house at 78 Derngate in Northampton. The house features his extraordinarily modern and striking interiors. School groups of all ages can enjoy a guided tour of the house. The Educational Resource pack is available at £10 and can be ordered by the phone, email or from the website.

The only church designed by Mackintosh to be built is also headquarters to the CRM Society. The Mackintosh Church delivers a lively programme of workshops for Schools, CPD training days for teachers, artists and educators; specialist talks and tours and the Mackintosh Resource Centre, with IT access and over 500 publications about CRM and design.
