Chairman’s Message

DearFriends,

Inthelastfewyears, theincreasingattentionwehave seenon issuesof corporate social responsibility

(CSR),sustainabilityandphilanthropyisveryheartwarmingindeed.Allthethree aspects revolve around thecoreconceptoftakingresponsibilityto contribute for the betterment ofsociety beyond what is expectedin the normal course of business. My peers in industry would agreewhen I say that while these three

approachesofgivingbacktosocietyhaveexistedfor longin India, albeitinvaryingintensity, recentpolicyandinstitutional initiatives have broughta tremendous amount of focusand impetus to these dimensions. It is my sincere belief that society, environment, businesses and, perhaps most importantly, our liveswill only improve as we endeavortotapintoourcollectivecapabilitiesandresourcestoaddressthegamutofissuesthatneedaddressinginourlargereco-system.

From the very beginning, we, atBharti, havebeenofthefirmopinionthat education is one of the mostcritical lacunae in India’s growthstory. We, therefore, made this oursingular focus, settingup theBhartiFoundationtoleadourphilanthropicagenda in an impactful manner.Today, the Foundation runs 254village-based schools that providequality and holistic educationabsolutelyfreeofcosttothemostunderprivilegedsectionsofsociety. We take pride in the fact thattherearearound39,000childrenwho are currently studying inour schools, receiving qualityeducation, which will havea life-changing impact. Wetake pride in the fact that49% of these children aregirls, whose empowermentwillhaveafar-reachingpositiveimpact on our society. Wetake pride in the fact that wehave close to 1500 youngpeople

fromvillagesworkingas teachers inour schools whose confidence andcapabilities will surprise many. Theeverydayfieldchallengesofrunningsuchalargeruralnetworkofschoolsnotwithstanding, the Satya BhartiSchool program has created manybestpractices for rural education inthecountry. And,theselearningsarenow being taken into governmentschoolstoimpactthousandsmore.

At the policy level, the NationalVoluntaryGuidelines (NVG) and theCSR section of the newCompaniesBill are truly breakthroughinterventions giving a new fillip tothisagenda.Theseactasacompassofsorts, providinganewframeworkto the corporate sector to supportthecatalyticchangethatoursocietyneedsonissuesbeyondbusiness.Idobelievethatwewillsoonseeanewwave as industry responds to thiscall to domore. Co-Chairman’s Message

DearFriends,

The true index of success ofany development initiative liesin the impact it creates in the

lives of its intended beneficiaries. Itinvariably remains embedded in aset of qualitative and quantitativevariables, not easily comprehensiblefromadistance.Hence, Imake it apoint to visit our schools regularlyto meet students, teachers, fieldstaff, but more importantly spendtimewiththeparentsandthevillage

communitytoappreciatetheimpactofourprogram.

Today, we are running 254 village-based schools that provide qualityeducation absolutely freeof cost topoor and disadvantaged children. When we started the program, allofusbelievedthatthehighlearninglevels of our children was going tobe the key differentiator for ourschools. We always had extremelystructured programs for ‘holisticdevelopment’ of children. Yet, notmanyofushadrealizedthepotentialof ‘holistic education’ as adriverofsocialchangeandnotjustacademicexcellence.Ourtraininginleadership, communication and other life skillsarehelpingmentorstudentstotakeup catalytic positions on relevantlocalissues.Italsoinstillsinthemthevaluesofdisciplineandcommitment, therebyhelpingthemtogrowuptobenotonlyemployablebutconfidentand responsible citizens with astrong sense of commitmenttowardsthesociety.

Each school has a powerfulstoryof‘change’totell.Therearechildrenwhohavefoughtagainstchild-marriagesandmore importantly, stoppedmany of them fromhappening. There arethosewhohaveprotestedagainst substance-abuseor made Panchayatstake an oath to send alltheir girls to schools orencouraged celebrationsaroundthebirthofgirl-childintheirvillageorledcampaignsfor cleanliness and hygiene. Itleaves me extremely gratified, whenIlistentotheselittleactsof leadership from parents

or community elders. I look at the39,000studentsenrolledtodayorforthatmatterthosewhohavestudiedwithusoverthelastsevenyears,asthe leaders of tomorrowandbrandambassadors of the Satya BhartiSchoolProgram.

OurladyteachersandHeadTeachers, most of whom have actually beenrecruitedfromthelocalcommunities, aresteadilyemergingasrolemodelsforpeopleinthesevillages.Wehaveenrolled mothers of our studentsasmid-daymeal cooks andopenedbank accounts in their namesthrough which they receive theirpayment electronically. Many otherlocal community members are alsoengagedgainfullywiththeseschoolsdriving socio-economic change inthesevillages.

The Satya Bharti School program isnow expanding through the PublicPrivate Partnership mode, underwhichwearecollaboratingwiththegovernment schools to introducesomeofourbestpracticesintothem.I firmly believe such interventionwill significantlyalter theway theseschoolsaremanagedand‘connected’withtheirrespectivecommunities.

Mycomplimentstotheteamfortheirdedicationandpassion towardsnotonly running a school program buta powerful institution of change inthesevillages.

Creating Suitable Learning Environment for Children

i. Spreading Energy The buildings are vibrant, child-friendly, spacious and ensureavailability of natural light andventilation, while ensuring costeffectiveness and safety at allplaces.

ii. Ensuring Learning Classrooms are designed to offersuitablelearningenvironmenttoallage groups of children. Individualexpressionofchildren ispromotedthroughsmallerblackboardsonthebasewalls.Theseatingarrangementin the classrooms is done to aidgrouplearningpractices.

iii. Maximizing Engagement Wide and long corridors allowchildren to sit facing each otherduring mid-day meals, therebyfacilitating interaction. Wastematerials like broken tiles havebeen used to line the corridors, givingitamosaicfinish.

iv. Providing Basic Amenities All schools have been providedwithadequatewaterandelectricityconnections, howeverpowersupplyis still erratic. There is provisionofseparate toilets for boys andgirls, toensurethatstudentsdonotfaceanykindofphysicalinconveniencewheninschool.

The design of the elementary school building had to be an extension of the existing school building and a cost effective structure that enables the school operations. This translated to bigger and well lit classrooms with ample cross ventilation, more interactive areas (like steps being used as semi covered mini amphitheatre), more space for the teaching staff (provision of an office), multi utility resource room, accessible to differently abled students (ramps), and bigger toilets.

Satya Bharti Curriculum to Scaffold the Teacher

i. Concept Development“To know” is simply to recallsomething you have learned frommemory but “to apply” something, you have to be able to understandand transfer that knowledgewithindifferent contexts and situations.Understanding is a deeper form oflearning, whileknowledgecaneasilybeforgotten.

Here I learnt about the constructivist way of teaching …….Now I have sound bonding with my students which helps me in improving their learning levels. I also learnt how to guide & develop the team of fellow teachers to meet the expectations of our stakeholders. All this happened gradually after going through different training sessions which developed me as an educational leader

Sustainability

Building partnerships alongwith building schools hasbeen thewayof lifeatBharti

Foundation.TheSatyaBhartiSchoolProgram exists to provide qualityeducation to children in the villagesand giving them an opportunity torealizetheirpotentialasemployableand responsible citizens. It is fartoo important a project to bedependent on a single agency forits sustainability. The program hasbeen strengthened by partnershipswith the village-community,Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) aswell aswith State bureaucracy. TheFoundation receives programmaticandacademicinputsfromspecializedinstitutionalpartners suchasNGOs,academic and teachers training institutions.

I. Financial SustainabilityA. Corpus Donors Bharti Foundation was set up in2000 with an initial endowmentfrom the promoters and associates.Over the last 13 years, it has beenworking in close alliance with itspartners to strengthen the long-termsustainabilityoftheprogrambyconstantlybuildingonitscorpus.

There are two categories of corpusdonors. Many individuals andcorporatesadoptaschoolforlifebybuildingaschool-specificcorpusfund.Theinterestonthisfundtakescareofthe annual operational expenses ofthe schoolpartiallyorwholly.Theseschools are thus sponsored by thedonorswho continue to build theirrelationshipwith the institutionandreceive reports fromtheFoundationregardingitsprogressandchallenges.Theothercategoryofcorpusgrantsare not linked to any school andare therefore, more institutional innature,helpingtheFoundationbuildlong-termsustainability.

B. Corporate PartnersToday, Bharti Foundation has more than 170 corporate partnerscontributing through financial andmaterialdonationstowardstheSatyaBharti School Program. For mostcorporatepartners,BhartiFoundationprovides an efficient and effectiveplatformfortheirCSRorphilanthropicfunds. Sponsorship from corporatepartners varies from constructionof new schools, expansion of

infrastructure of existing schools, supportingoperationalcostsofschoolsannually, orevenadoptingaschoolforlife by giving an endowment grant. Many corporations donate materialssuchasdesktops, laptops,USBdrives, shoesforstudents, etc.

C. Individual PartnersMany individual donors havepartnered with us after hearingabout our work at various forums;

Charity and philanthropy take many forms, but the best kinds are those that empower the beneficiaries, giving them the means to uplift themselves, rather than helping them for the time being. Deutsche Bank is privileged to support the Satya Bharti Schools since 2010. This excellent educational program with the Bharti Foundation has enabled hundreds of young children to receive an education which they may otherwise not have the opportunity to. We are extremely delighted to see that these children are given a strong foundation of the English language. The parallels between Deutsche Bank and the Bharti Foundation might not be immediately obvious. But where we find commonality is in our mutual recognition of the importance of corporate responsibility in places where the greatest needs are.
