    Course DescriptionStudents will have an opportunity to learn about the content and process of Early Childhood

    Education, the Early Childhood Opportunities at Eastern, how to develop a professional growth plan,

    and to construct and assess their knowledge through the development of an eportfolio.

    ProficienciesStudents will be invited to join a community of learners in order to learn and be involved in the

    integrated study of children from birth to age 8. In addition, this introductory course will involve

    students in:

    Exploring information and resources that enhance the lives of all children, Discussing the personal development of professionals that work with young children, and Beginning the process of authentic assessment through a portfolio approach

    Learning Outcomes:1 Students will experience the beginnings of becoming a community of learners though experiencing

    processes of learning.

    2. Students will learn about the foundation of Early Childhood Education

    a) Learning about holistic and differentiated approaches to the study and education of young

    children

    b) Experiencing collaboration processes

    c) Choosing areas of concentration and electives

    d) Developing a portfolio assessment process (eportfolio)

    3. Students will explore information and resources for children from birth to age 8..

    b) Professional resources and literature

    c). Professional collaboration and networking

    4. Students will discuss and reflect on the self-identity of a professional

    a) Professionalism in ECE

    b) Outline personal reasons and questions for studying the lives, development, and learning of

    young children (personal narrative)

    c) Begin awareness of the perspectives of an ECE professional

    d) Develop sensitivity for diversity

    e) Ientify perspectives for working with young children

    e) Apply the Professional Code of Conduct to learn about Professionalism in Early Childhood

    Education

    f) Survey ECE Career opportunities (individual preferences)

    5. Authentic assessment

    a) Begin a portfolio assessment processb) Evaluate your learning through a Self Assessment Process

    Outcome Evidence:

    1. Develop an outline of a portfolio for the program.2. Develop a program plan for your study of the Option you have chosen.3. Develop information and resources for working with children in the local community by.

    researching 20 resources (5 from each of the outcomes listed in #3). List and annotate each

    chosen resource. Collaborate with those in your group and enter your findings in your

    beginning e-portfolio.

    4. Research a professional that works with children and that you think you might want to developsome expertise in the same career. Write a 2 page observation and reflection of your insights,

    findings, questions, etc.

    5. From the NAEYC Professionalism in ECE,your observations, and your study of resources:write a reflection of your insights of becoming the ECE professional you choose.

    6. Become familiar with the ECE Endorsement Competencies and other learning standards forECE Professions and Young Children.

    7. At the end of class you will write a self assessment.8. To build community and show your commitment you must be engaged in the process of

    learning. Thus you must attend each class and choose to have a voice in your learning. For

    each time you must miss class you will lose .2 grade points.
