HVLP Hello!

Well the wagon is back from the paint shop and like most of us it sure looksbetter now than when it was naked. This is especially true for this car for the simplereason that this is the first time in seventeen years that it’s worn any thing but a finecoat of surface rust. Assembly began almost immediately. Doors are the first orderof business. When doing this one has to wonder. It took neighbor and fellow EdsellerKevin Rawson and I an afternoon to hang and fit the doors. Now I know they didn’tspend that amount of time on the assembly line as the cars rolled off one everyminute. I think you fall into what I call the ceramic tile psychosis. If you’ve everdone any tile work, as you lay the individual pieces they never seem to look perfectlylevel and square with all of the adjacent ones. This can drive you nuts after the tenthtime or so you take to reposition them ever so slightly. Well the answer is; don’tworry about it! You have to look at the larger picture. You are the last person that’sever going to have your nose that close. When you step back all will be right in thefit and finish world. It is the same thing with the Edsels. Some critics wrote backin ‘57 that most of the cars look like they were fit in the dark. The reasons are legion.Hand tooling and quality control of the individual parts being a couple. So once againthe best advice is do the best you can while making sure that they don’t scuff andthe lines are fairly true and move on. If not we might find you writhing on the groundnext to your half-assembled car drooling and mumbling some profanity lacedcomments about how you should have listened to your spouse and bought that Buickinstead. Any way it’s on to electrical assembly and more and larger hurdles.

Just a quick word about paint; it ain’t cheap! Counting the primer coats, thecolors and the clear it took over seven gallons of paint to finish the Bermuda. Nowkeep in mind this was inside and out from bare metal to finish and most of it wassanded off. It still is a substantial amount of paint. I used the formulas that wereprinted in this newsletter to mix the colors and I could not be happier. Unless ofcourse I got it for free, that would probably make me happier. The charcoal brownmetallic is a much richer color than one would expect and the combination of thatwith the driftwood is quite striking. Of course I have to add that the young guy thatwas the painter’s sanding assistant, whom I have the utmost appreciation for (seelast months newsletter) said that it reminded him of a pair of shoes from the fifties. Kids!

Very shortly we will be publishing the paint formulas for the ’59 colors. The only problem that we have run up against is there are two colors that we can’tget a read on. One being Jadeglint green and the other is Gold metallic. If some oneout there has an original car in one of these colors please contact me. Please notemy new e-mail address or at 716-652-3271.

Till next time

We received this postcard from Willis Bryant(Past IEC Head Judge) of Illinois who decide to share thisEdsel gem with us. The back of the post card describes:

“Oak Glen, Yucaipa, CaliforniaLaw’s Coffee shop - In the heart of mile high apple growing country, famous for its hot apple pies, caters tothousands of visitors who annually come to this little bit of New England to buy apples directly from the growers.Thompson’s Antique Shop and Country Store, with its “Bit of down East” flavor, is seen on the left.”

Willis notes the 1958 Ranger 4Dr Hardtop in the photo and due to the zip code on the back of the postcard, thephoto was taken after 1963. Thanks Willis!

We need your photos... Email your jpg photos or send a photo, along with a short paragraph describing your“pride and joy” to [email protected] or EDSELetter, 5705 Powers Road, Orchard Park, New York 14127

Edsels May Not Have Sold...In the two years before its introduction, Ford employed its marketing might in teaserads and leaked information to position the car as unlike anything ever seen. “you’venever had it like this before.” one ad said. Few wanted it.

Ford executives had hoped to sell more than 200,000 in the first year but ended upselling only 63,107. In it’s entire three-year run, only 110,847 Edsels were sold.

The two-ton behemoth - actually seven different Edsels models in the first year -came with a push-button gear selector systems in the steering wheel and “horsecollar” grills. But 2.5 million Americans who crowded into showrooms the week ofSeptember 4, 1957, they appeared to be nothing more than expensive, odd-lookingversions of cars already on the market.

Undaunted, Ford treated America on October 13 to “The Edsel Show,” a one hourCBS special in place of “The Ed Sullivan Show,” with hosts Frank Sinatra, BingCrosby and other stars. There was even a chance to win a free pony if you’d justcome in for a test drive. Still no sell.

Might the Edsel have done better with another name? Hard to say, considering thealternatives. Among the 6,000 names proposed for the wonder car: The UtopianTurtletop, the Pastelogram and the Mongoose Civique.

What went wrong? Automotive historians say Ford goofed by pitching the Edsel asrevolutionary, while consumers thought it merely revolting. Its introduction alsocame during a recession that caused automotive sales to tumble and consumers toshy away from larger cars.

And the Edsel quickly developed a reputation as a lemon because workers at Fordand Mercury plants hated the fact the Edsel models were produced on the sameassembly lines as other cars. They often “forgot” to apply special Edsel parts out ofthe different bins.

“The Edsel served as a textbook example of corporate presumption and disregardfor market realities,” says Anthony Young, a writer for Automobile Quarterlymagazine. “It also proved that advertising and pre-delivery hype have their limitsin inducing consumers to buy a new and improved car.”

The TinSmith - Japanese DieCast

I thought we’d take a little break from tin this month and take a look at a couple ofdiecast Japanese toy Edsels instead.

The first one is a Pacer two-door hardtop, slightly larger than H-O scale. It wasimported from Japan by the Louis Marx Company under the Linemar brand nameand was one of many different 1958 model American cars offered in the Collectoyseries, all of which can be considered rare. It’s worthy of your consideration mainlybecause it’s an Edsel, but also because of its rarity and its Japanese origin. Bothexamples I have seen were painted sort of a robin’s egg blue and all Collectoy carshave friction motors. The Edsel was prone to cracking around the headlights.

The second toy is perhaps the raresttoy Edsel of them all. It’s the onlynon-AMT 1960 Edsel I have everseen, and this is the one and onlyexample. It’s a blue, very crudelydie-cast sedan that was marketed inthe US by Azrak-Hamway International. (The AHI trademark can be found on thepackaging of several tin Edsels.) AHI sold sets of these awful little toys in both 1959and 1960 however the earlier set didn’t include an Edsel.

Edsel Exports - Time Capsule for Cars

Among cars offered for sale at one of Syria’s two permanent used-car “swap meets”was a 1958 Edsel, according to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times.

“I understand this car is very famous in your country,” the owner remarked to anAmerican tourist. The vehicle, painted Red and White, was said to get about six mpg. When asked how many miles it had traveled, the owner indicated that the odometerhad gone around twice: 200,000 miles.

Syria’s troubled economy does not allow the importation of many new cars, andimports are priced at $40,000.00 up. Consequently, the nation’s capital, Damascus, has become “the elephant graveyard of American cars... a sort of time capsule forthousands of perfectly maintained old American cars.” Prospective buyers don’t kicktires; they pound the hood.
