EDRS Summary

TELESP Marc Vizcarro Carretero EDRS (European Data Relay System) Introduction EDRS is an ESA project whose aim is to offer uninterrupted coverage to Europe harnessing the existing orbiting satellites around Earth and 2 geostationary satellites devoted to the system (EDRS-A and EDRS-C). In addition to that, EDRS intends to provide connection to LEO satellites and other spacecraft so that real-time communications between the spacecraft and their respective control center can be established. The key idea that makes EDRS differ from other conventional networks is that besides using RF technology (Ka-band), optical communications are also used, either between inter satellite links and ground – satellite links. The choice of the sort of communication is made regarding the power expense, the atmosphere impairments, the network configuration, etc. EDRS is still under implementation of the ARTES-7 (Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems) program. Nonetheless during years new applications have been discovered and several companies have been selected by ESA to work in specific areas. These are: Airbus Defence and Space, SpaceDataHighway (2011) o PPP (Public Private Partnership). o Test EDRS harnessing the satellites Sentinel-1 and 2 from the Copernicus program Astrium, GlobeNet program (2011) o PPP (Public Private Partnership). o Designing and developing the complete ground and space infrastructure for its further commercial exploitation. 1
