such as cyanide and chlorine releasedfrom hazardous materials spills, pose animmediate threat to public health.

For example, a chemical accident inwhich chlorine gas or cyanide gas isreleased would likely result in

widespread deaths as the plume, or toxiccloud, moved through a populated area

exposure to carcinogens that may resultin cancer twenty to thirty years after thetime of the spill

A toxic cloud containing dioxins, whichare very potent cancer-causingchemicals, was released into the

atmosphere and spread across thenearby densely populated city of Seveso. The researchers found that the womenwho developed breast cancer had a ten-

fold increase of the toxic chemical intheir blood

    chronic, or long termtoxicity

Toxic red sludge from a spill at anindustrial plant in Hungary has reachedthe River Danube,

They said alkaline levels that killed all fish inone river were now greatly reduced, but werebeing monitored.

PM Viktor Orban called the spill an "ecological

tragedy". There are fears the mud, whichburst out of a reservoir on Monday, couldpoison the Danube.

On August 11, 2006, a bunker fuel tanker, carrying over two million litres of fuel sank inthe southern Philippines and has leaked over200,000 litres of fuel onto the coast of

    Guimaras Island.

According to reports from the Philippines, thetanker is over 600 metres below sea level andcontinues to leak fuel and is still spreading in

other islands; approximately 4,000 familieshave been affected and/or displaced by thespill. Local efforts have proven difficult to capthe leak in the tanker and there has been no

successful effort to remove the tanker from

If rapid spill cleanup is necessary, theemergency response team designsand implements cleanup measures to

protect exposed populations andecosystems from toxic responses

Small spills on land are cleaned up bysimply excavating the contaminatedsoil and moving it to a secure landfill.

Oil spills on water are contained usingfloating booms and adsorbents, orsolid materials that capture the soil,

so that it can be disposed of in

What NEVER to do in the Event of aMercury Spill

Never walk around an area that iscontaminated with mercury. Mercury is easilyspread and the spill area may not be easilyidentified. Contaminated clothing can alsospread mercury around.

Never use an ordinary vacuum cleaner toclean up mercury. The vacuum will putmercury vapor into the air and increase

exposure. The vacuum cleaner will becontaminated and will have to be disposed ofas hazardous waste.

Never use a broom to clean up mercury. It

will break the mercury into smaller droplets
