My wife recently left with our three kids

on, what the kids have termed, “The Great

Adventure.”

In reality, there isn’t much of an “adventure”

taking place, as much as there’s a lot of time

spent in the car, driving to meetings with friends

and relatives. Somewhere in the middle of it all,

I will join them.

I remember well growing up and the series of

“adventures” we took as a family. From our nest

in northern California, it seemed we travelled the

globe. Well, at least the California portion of it.

Those adventures quickly became fond

memories. Such as the time we stopped in some

God-forsaken, hotter-than-Hades, town in the

middle of Nevada, to picnic under a Tomahawk

missile proudly poised on a pedestal. Or the trip

we took through a winding canyon, which resulted

in my brother vomiting in seven pairs of neatly

lined shoes, and arms and legs furiously flailing

away from the chaos. Or, when once again, our

shoddy, hand-me-down sedan, fell victim to

a runaway axle, and we ended up waiting for

three hours at a rest stop in who-knows-where,

while my dad walked the ten miles to the nearest

town.

It was during these “great adventures,” where

we developed a sound and firm bond as a family.

We learned to love and trust each other, despite

our differences, habits, and obvious annoyances.

The comedian, Bill Engvall, jokes that cramming

kids and parents together in a vehicle, heading

off on a road trip tour of America, and expecting

everyone to behave, is the “perfect” sort of

vacation. While the minute seconds ticked

wearily forward, the overall experience meshed

perfectly together for me.

These are the experiences, shared as a family,

which shape our relationships and fundamentally

develop our knowledge and understanding of the

world.

Whether we’re young or old, we should never

lose sight of the road we travel. Take experiences,

especially with your children and family, to

create memories that last. With the noise and

other pollution that consistently invades our

premises, it’s nice to know that there is one place

where we can come together to create our own

great adventures.

One of the coolest and most action packed

sports during the recent Endeavor Games

at UCO was sitting volleyball. While

the name says it all, there is virtually

no difference to regular volleyball, just

everything is lower to the ground. The play

is just as intense and exciting. In instances

such as the Edeavor Games the sport is for

people with disabilities. However, when a

disability is not a requirement, anyone can

participate in the sport at any skill level.

Only in Edmond will you find a snow cone shop on virtually every corner...or make that six corners throughout the city. It’s a trend that has exploded over the last couple years and each of the six kiosk businesses seem to be doing very well. Pinterest, for the holidays, I noticed a pattern of 4th of July visuals of berries and bananas. My grandmother always made banana pudding for the 4th, so I decided to create a new dessert, all my own and incorporate the two.

INGREDIENTS:1 Graham Cracker crust, mix or

prepackaged.1 large box of Jello Banana Cream

Pudding 5 medium bananas6 large strawberries1 container of blueberries1 can of real whipped creamMix together the crust mix and let sit for

an hour. When crust is ready, line crust with sliced bananas, then fill crust with pudding. Let sit for 1 hour, then line top of pie with sliced strawberries, blueberries and finish with real whipped cream. It looked great and passed the teenage taste test here, with flying colors! Enjoy!

Bunee Tomlinson: Student FilmmakerBy Sherri Hultner

Sitting down with student filmmaker Bunee Tomlinson this month, exactly one year after our last interview, was an eye opening lesson in exuberance and persistence. Bunee is a local 17 year old filmmaker, who just graduated from Memorial High School, and is currently enrolled to film school here in the OKC metro for the fall. Bunee has spent the last two years, since his first film “Mom’s Favorite Vase”, networking, creating new screen plays and films, as well as traveling all over the US to film festivals. Bunee has filmed eight short films, participated in more than 30 festivals and received numerous prestigious awards.

In watching Bunee through the years, his most fantastic quality is his level of enthusiasm, and how he is creating a multi talented niche for himself in learning every aspect of filmmaking. Bunee won the student division of the 24-Hour Video Race in Tulsa with his team for the third time in a row. He has had numerous internships, and he also had two films accepted into the Kids’ Fest short programs in the deadCENTER Film Festival in 2009.

“Friends”is Bunee’s most recent film and it was among 100 selections chosen by the 2012 deadCENTER Film Festival held in Oklahoma City last June. This makes Bunee’s third deadCENTER appearance, since our first meeting in 2010. Award-winning “Friends” has played in numerous festivals across the nation, such as the NFFTY festival in Seattle and the Bare Bones Film Festival in Muskogee, where he picked up the Best Director award.

“Friends” is a short film about two young students who are struggling with exclusion and bullying in school. A shy fourth grader, Jacob, struggles to make friends and feels continually rejected by his peers. He sees that another boy, Tommy, is struggling with the same problem. With this film, Bunee told us that he wanted to raise awareness about bullying and bring about change.

“I want the kids who see this film to find someone at their school who is not making any friends, and realize that they need to go help this kid. I am encouraging kids who see this film that we all need to respect one another,” he said. Bunee also said that he wants to encourage kids who are experiencing exclusion and bullying to keep trying and never give up.

Bunee and crew have just fully funded and will begin shooting his next film, “No One Knows” in August. It will be starring Sami Isler, Nicole Fancher, Caleb Barwick & Jett Anderson, directed by Bunee Tomlinson, written by Jamie Livingston-Dierks, screenplay by Jamie Livingston-Dierks and produced by Daniel Hoyos.

This story is about family, public perceptions, and secrets and will portray a girl who is abused by her father. Her neighbor, a boy her age, is being physically abused by his father. Bunee stated that he really wants to inform people of this issue because, especially here in this region, child abuse is a big problem. Bunee also stated that he wants people to see there are many types of bullying that need to be addressed. He said he wants to let parents know that there are kids out there who are struggling, and that they are in need of help, and that we need to be there for them because we’re their role models.

It’s not very often that you meet a young man with such a clear focus on where he wants his life to go, coupled with the drive and determination to get there. He has immersed himself in the OK art scene and he has gained a lot of experience working with writers, actors and other student filmmakers along the way. It wouldn’t be a surprise to us if Bunee was directing blockbusters in Hollywood in the not too distant future.

As the heat cranks up here in Oklahoma, lawns and landscapes can take quite a beating. Same is true in the winter months of Oklahoma when the severe cold has put to rest many of the trees and herbaceousperennials. However, there is hope with a four-seasonlandscape design. By applying elements that are meant to be at their textural or blooming performance during one point in a season, these elements--if applied throughout the landscape--can be considered the backbone of the design. The factors to consider when trying to design a four seasons landscape is dormancy, seasonal interest and peak bloom timing.

To everything there is a season...and for landscapes, a large portion of seasons are dictated by the time to sleep and sprout. When, how and duration of dormancy plays one of the largest roles in selecting elements for a four season landscape. The goal is not to have everything in your garden go dormant or wake up all at the same time. Different deciduous trees lose their leaves at different times, certain perennials hold on longer than others. Staggering this

process will give the landscape a gradual fade down to a more subtle winter look and will give delightful surprises each week in the spring as the landscape sprouts and buds. It is also a little known fact that the heat can force dormancy in many plants as well. How a plant looks while dormant can be the reason why that element is in your design to start out with. These elements are sleeping beauties of sorts; their show-stopping moments usually involve texture of limbs or change in evergreen foliage.

Having a few focal points of seasonal interest helps distract from fading annuals in the passing season. Just like choosing a plant for its dormancy interest, selecting different perennial elements for early springtime is important. Think of budding and flowering trees, perennial bulbs and creeping blooming ground covers as season openers. As the weather gets hotter, using perennials such as lantana, crape myrtles, verbena, and certain varieties of roses can keep the spirit of your garden going. The fall is a great time to play with props in your garden. Placing pumpkins or gourds in beds adds a few months’ color without the hassle of watering another feature. The care and maintenance given to a plant can train it for a certain season. By keeping chrysanthemums clipped back until July 1 of the year, these flowers can be considered a fall blooming perennial.

Timing is everything when it comes to a four-season design. Imagine well-placed focal points of interest that stand out throughout each season with a show-stopping quality. For instance, plant hollies specifically for the show of the berries in late autumn or early winter. By varying the peak bloom times of perennials and blooming shrubs, the need for seasonal annuals is almost eliminated. Planning a seasonal garden also means that the energy spent on replanting every year will be a lot less intensive as well. A four-season design effort is not only an efficient and money-saving option, but it becomes more enjoyable as you enjoy the fruits of your labor for years to come.

American men have a love affair with anything that goes fast and makes a lot of noise. Race cars, dragsters, motorcycles and speedboats are definitely popular with males between the age of 5-75. Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration, but you get the point.

Here in OKC we don’t get a whole lot of loud-and-fast events, so when the drag boat races make their annual stop here it’s definitely a hit with the locals.

The drag boat races run for an entire weekend each June. Even though they just go in a straight line, it’s pretty cool to see something traveling at speeds in excess of 200 mph down our river.

Sitting on the bank of the river all day watching boat after boat make their qualifying run doesn’t really prepare you for the big dogs of the sport. Sure, all the other boats are loud and fast, but they’ve got nothing on the top fuel hydro’s.

The only top fuel hydro running at this years event was Liquid Quicker piloted by Mike Robbins (pictured below). Once Mike dropped the hammer for his run the sound was deafening, the roost shot up to the Lincoln Blvd. bridge and flames flew from the boats exhaust. Mike’s run in Liquid Quicker was clocked at 242 miles per hour. It was impressive, to say the least.

In the world of action sports, wakeboarding is about as exciting as they come. It has big air, gnarly grinds and cool trick combo’s. The riders are athletes in the truest sense of the word and the sport takes an immense amount of skill to reach the top level. Here in Oklahoma, with our abundance of lakes and ponds, there is a sizeable wakeboard community.

Recently at Wake Zone on 10th street, east of downtown OKC, riders from all across the country gathered for the Cable Wakeboard National Championships. The event was filmed

by CBS Sports to be televised as part of CBS’ Alt Games.

The course at Wake Zone consisted of a huge fun box, a couple wedges and a couple jumps and a rail. In the Pro class there were 17 riders competing for $12,000 in cash and prizes and a trip to the Philippines as part of Team USA in the Cable World Championships. With so many riders on hand the Pro class was split into two heats. The big winner on the day was Austin Hair of Florida.

Wake Zone Cable Wakeboard National Championship

Brady Patry, 13, of Edmond has only been wakeboarding for a year ans a half, but he’s already dreaming of hitting the Pro tour. At the recent National Championships, held at Wake Zone in OKC, he picked up the 15 & Under title. The kid’s already on the fast track and looks to have a bright future in the sport.

took home a seventh in the Pro class and a second in

the WakeSkate class. To help him reach his goal of

wakeboarding stardom Dylan has secured sponsorship from

Monster Energy Drink and Fox Racing.

40th Annual LibertyFest

An estimated crowd of over 50,000 people lined the downtown Edmond streets and braved near 100 degree temperatures to watch the 40th annual LibertyFest Parade. This years parade was complete with Beauty Queens, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, politicians, clowns, marching bands, shriners, old cars and war veterans. The LibertyFest Parade never disappoints. It’s one of the best parades in the state, if not the country. Our little town definitely knows how to celebrate the 4th of July.

It’s no secret that people come to Edmond from all over the state to watch our awesome fireworks display. The streets surrounding the UCO campus and the campus itself was again packed with revelers. And the show was, as it always is, spectacular. Lasting more than 30 minutes, the LibertyFest fireworks display included all the fire bombs, cascading rocket bursts and fire fountains one could hope for--and all of it was set to music. Awesome!
