FROM THE CHAIRPERSON’S DESK

Welcome to the second edition of LIASA Limpopo newsletter 2016. The focal point of this piece of

information is to inform, share and update both professionals and non-professionals about library

activities in the province.

Frankly, we pride ourselves with numerous activities happening in the province aimed at promoting

and inculcating the reading culture. This is a clear indication that the province has embedded

librarians who are working tirelessly to see development through libraries.

The celebration of World Book day in Vhembe district - Elim and Sekhukhune district – Feta Kgomo

Municipality hosted by the National Library of South Africa was a blessing to the province. The

provincial leadership of LIASA appreciated and believes it to be the groundbreaking efforts to

promote libraries and reading. The event was well supported and amongst others were students of

Information studies programme from University of Limpopo.

2016 is the election year for both national and provincial leadership. Members are therefore

requested to renew their membership in time in order to fully participate in the coming elections.

Our sector needs leaders who will be able to take LIASA to greater heights and further to make

Library and Transformation Services Charter a reality. Impressive strides towards the developments

of the association are already made. But there is strong need to collectively be pioneers of the

process.

This edition will mainly feature the World Read Aloud activities, South African Library week

celebrations, World Book Day and current awareness.

Let’s continue to uphold our president’s theme ‘Libraries for Development: Action, Integration and

Collaboration’.

To be updated about LIASA Limpopo branch activities, keep visiting our Face book page frequently.

Enjoy reading!

LIASA LIMPOPO BRANCH CELEBRATING SALW IN DENDRON

LIASA Limpopo Branch celebrated South African Library Week on Thursday 17 March 2016 at

Mogwadi Public Library (formerly Dendron), Molemole Municipality, and Capricorn District.

The function was attended by LIASA Limpopo members, University of Limpopo Information Studies

Society (ULISS), Mogwadi Public Library staff, Molemole Municipality staff members, and Dendron

Primary School Learners.

Mr Maoka Dikotla, whom is an elected Chairperson of LIASA Limpopo Branch, represented the

branch on the programme. He stressed out that libraries are our heritage, and we must look after

them. We must not let our community members to destroy them during strikes or protests. Destruction

of libraries is done by people with lack of information and knowledge. Informed citizens will never

destroy libraries and other buildings during protests.

While thanking the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture for building libraries in the province, Mr

Dikotla encouraged librarians to order materials which will increase library collections (both print

and electronic collection).

LIASA Colleagues, Mogwadi Public Library staff, and Molemole Municipal staff members.

Dendron Primary School Learners attending SALW Function

“Our teachers should encourage learners to utilize these libraries,” he added.

The Circuit Manager from Department of Education told learners that education “is an important

issue”, and should be taken seriously. “Learners must go to libraries to develop reading and writing

skills, to develop their interest in reading, to do their research,” she said. “Teachers must give learners

assignments which will compel them to make use of libraries.”

Best regards

UNIVERSITY OF VENDA LIBRARY CELEBRATING SALW

The University of Venda launched its SALW celebration on the 16th of March 2016. There was a festive

atmosphere with music and a lot of frenetic activity happening in the library foyer, the venue of the

launch. Posters advertising the event had been posted all over campus, the Univen Radio had been

announcing the event during its ad breaks for a week, posts had been made on the Library

Facebook page and on the library information screens.

The essence of the SALW theme “#librariesforlifelonglearning” was underlined by speaker after

speaker pointing at the critical role of libraries in providing spaces for thinking, reflection, learning

and sharing of knowledge and life experiences beyond the requirements of formal learning. In

between the speeches the St Engenas choir would serenade the crowd with a song or two and the

DJ would also play one or two scorchers forcing the crowd of mostly students and librarians to take

to their feet and also as part of entertainment. It was exciting and yet sobering to see the collegiality

and camaraderie between students and librarians sharing the stage in talking about libraries and

learning, singing and dancing and just having a goodtime amusement.

The guest speaker, Mr. Gift Dafuleya, spoke at length to the students on the dos and don’ts of the

academia particularly around issues of academic integrity; encouraging students to avoid the copy

and paste culture. He advised on how students should transition in terms of their information handling

and critical thinking skills as they move from first year undergraduate level to masters and PhD level.

And the library was at the heart of that transition that should see students developing the graduate

skill of being independent critical thinkers and self-directed learners.

He urged librarians to reflect on the role of the library going into the future Vis a Vis its role in

promoting lifelong learning. He envisioned a future where libraries are the connecting hubs and

enabling spaces, both physical and virtual, where authors meet to collaborate on research projects,

peer review each other’s work and get it published OPENLY for ALL to use. This, he said, was

necessary in order to counter the current unsustainable scholarly publishing models that are

continuously putting a strain on library budgets and in the process diminishing the role of libraries in

promoting learning. The onus is thus on libraries to move information from behind the paywalls into

the open information commons and assisting in providing the tools and skills necessary for its access

and use.

He concluded by saying that the library of the future has a moral obligations to find aggressive and

yet collaborative and innovative ways of reducing the cost of producing information and closing

the information access gap. That, he stated, was key to the placing of libraries as TRUE places for

lifelong learning.

Trainings where offered to the university community for the rest of the library week on the use of

electronic databases, the Turnitin anti-plagiarism software and the Reworks citation management

software.

It was a well spend week.
