The Hawk NewspaperEditorial Board Positions

Editor-in-ChiefThe Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the online and print content of The Hawk. The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for enforcement of all deadlines, and acts as the publisher of the paper. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: • Oversee all editorial content for all published material (online and print)• Edit material as needed• Produce material as needed• Set vision for future of newspaper• Work with business editor to ensure fiscal responsibility of the newspaper• Run editorial board and general staff meetings• Oversee and develop special projects• Train new staff members in conjunction with staff editors• Act as a liaison between editorial and business departments• Act as a public liaison to students, faculty, and staff outside of The Hawk• Meet with faculty advisors and publication board weekly and as needed

Business EditorThe Business Editor is responsible for overseeing and being the leading force of the sales team, which solicits advertisements from Saint Joseph’s University departments, local businesses, and national adver-tising agencies and/or companies. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: • Set budget in collaboration with Editor-in-Chief and faculty/publication board• Handle accounts payable, ensuring all payments due to vendors, etc., are paid in a timely fashion• Handle accounts receivable, ensuring all payments due to The Hawk are paid in a timely fashion

by providing and organizing insertion orders and invoices, and following up on each as necessary• Set financial and advertising vision for the future of newspaper• Oversee and develop special projects• Act as a liaison between advertising and editorial departments• Create and service new and existing advertiser accounts• Develop new advertising and business initatives• Purchase equipment, office supplies, and material as necessary• Meet with faculty advisors and Editor-in-Chief weekly or as needed

Copy ChiefThe Copy Chief is responsible for proofreading all copy and making subsequent edits in accordance with the AP Stylebook and The Hawk’s Style Manual. Additionally, the Copy Chief is responsible for fact checking in collaboration with section editors regarding the quality of articles.

Layout EditorThe Layout Editor is responsible for the design and production of the paper. The Layout Editor works with section editors in designing each section. The Layout Editor makes final decisions regarding layout. S/he will supervise the design of pages before each issue is published.

News EditorThe News Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of campus, city, state, national and international news/events that affect the Saint Joseph’s University community. The News Editor edits and proofreads all articles that are published in the News section.

Opinions EditorThe Opinions Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of Opinions articles that affect the Saint Joseph’s University community as a whole, both on- and off-campus. Additionally, the Opinions Edi-tor will work with the Editor-in-Chief and editorial board to develop weekly staff editorials that cover timely and pressing issues relevant to the St. Joe’s campus community.

Features EditorThe Features Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of articles that fall under the category of soft news, human interest, humor, service, and other campus/off-campus events and news.

Arts & Entertainment EditorThe Arts & Entertainment (A&E) Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of arts and/or entertain-ment news and events that affect the Saint Joseph’s University community. This includes theater, music, television, films, fine arts, other art forms, as well as culture/entertainment trends.

Sports EditorThe Sports Editor is responsible for assigning coverage of sports articles that affect the Saint Joseph’s University community. This includes all events at Saint Joseph’s Finnesey Field and Maguire Campus, as well as the Michael J. Hagan ’85 Arena. Coverage of city sports events and national championships should also be considered.

Photography EditorThe Photography Editor is responsible for making note of each section’s request for photos and then as-signing photographers to produce the requested photos. The Photography Editor is also responsible for assigning a weekly feature photo assignment to photographers for front page content and photo stories of happenings around campus and events pertaining to St. Joe’s students.

Online EditorThe Online Editor is responsible for producing and maintaining The Hawk’s website (www.sjuhaw-knews.com), as well as managing online multimedia projects, including blogs, online features, social media profiles/sites, sound slides, video, and other web-based content.

Assistant EditorThe position of assistant editor is a training position. The assistant editor will learn editing responsi-bilities according to the definitions put forth by each section editor. The responsibilities of an assistant editor will therefore vary depending upon the section of The Hawk to which they are assigned. Assistant editor positions are available in: News, Opinions, Features, Arts & Entertainment, Sports, Layout, Pho-tography, and Online.
