New Altar and Lectern Crafted for Commons

Glenn Beiter has recently crafted a new portable altar and lectern for the Commons Building. The altar has a Jerusalem Cross formed out of pieces from our old church. Both pieces are fine exam-ples of craftsmanship. As soon as possible we will display these beautiful works of art in the Commons Building.

Larry Morris Provides MantleAll you have to do is to walk into the new Commons Building to be stunned by the magnificence of the fireplace mantle. The mantle is a gift from Larry Morris to Epiphany. The mantle is cut from an old growth pine tree and stained naturally. The next time you see Larry give him a big thank you. Or, tell Jackie Camper to thank Larry for all of us.

COMMON’S BUILDING TO OPENExciting news! Our Commons Building will soon be ready to use - most likely around October 1st. While we are still missing the flooring and furniture everything else is soon to be up and operational. We also don’t have the cabinets and kitchen appliances but those are paid for and should be complete in the months ahead. A new large screen TV has also been paid for and will be installed soon. The TV will allow us to have video classes and have movie nights. We are in the process of planning programs for our new space. We plan a Grand Opening when we are a bit further along.

If you can help, we need to purchase comfortable chairs and tables for our new space. We also need new couches and love-seats to set around our magnificent fireplace. The largest item still remaining is the flooring. When we have the $8,000 necessary for the flooring we will have it installed. What we have accomplished so far is amazing. It is a tribute to this fineparish. We have a long way to go with our new building, but we have reached a milestone – occupancy. Maybe we will have most everything ready to go by the time the Bishop comes and we can have a special service in the Commons.

Robert Benson Comes to Epiphany for the First Carol Jean Rives Forum on Spirituality

Robert Benson, from Christ Cathedral in Nashville, Tennessee, will lead us on a two day retreat beginning on Friday evening, November 11 and continues on Saturday, November 12. This will be the first offering of the Carol Jean Rives Forum on Spirituality and will be our first conference in the new Commons Building.

Topic will be “Living Prayer” The cost of the weekend, including a snack on Friday evening as well as a continental breakfast and lunch on Saturday, will be $30. There are scholarships available.

Mark the date on your calendar now. We will begin offering tickets in late October.

Robert Benson is a well known writer on Spirituality. His books are both practice and profound. They are an easy read, but say a great deal. He has written approximately ten published books. His books include discovering spirituality from topics as far ranging as baseball, to gardening, to vacationing on a small island in the Caribbean.

Having grown up in Tennessee, where he still lives, in a family of writers, publishers, and speakers, Robert Benson says that "Words and sentences and stories have mattered most to me for most all my life." For most of his life, he has been a freelance writer and editor. His books are about paying attention to the things that point us to the Sacred in life — known through prayer and liturgy and also through ordinary activities such as baseball, gardening, and travel. He leads retreats and speaks at conferences about prayer and vocation.

My Dear Parish Family,

September has come and gone and now we are back to

everyday life in the parish. I am person-ally looking forward to the power and joy the season carries. What can be better than sharing worship and time with your dear sisters and brothers? Life in the Kingdom is grand. I look forward to seeing everyone back in the pews again. I miss terribly so many of you through the summer, and the time when we get to autumn just somehow feels right . I love it!

I truly believe that Epiphany has more going on this year than any previous year. Now I realize that no one can take advantage of every program that the church offers, but we try to be a full service parish. After-all, a parish

church is a family, where people come and go with each activity that strength-ens them in their life in Christ. We must never waver, however, in our belief that our worship is at the center of that life. Worship is the very ground of our being. Everything that we do flows in and out of our common worship together. The purpose of all our classes, dinners, programs, every-thing we do, makes sense because they grow out of common worship. Our worship changes little weekly, but its changelessness becomes the basis for how we live out our faith in our every-day life. There once was a book I read whose title was – “Praying Shapes Be-lieving” . I have discovered that as we hear and say the historic prayers of the Prayer Book over and over they become part of who we are and how we live.

Rector’s RamblingsBecause of this, worship becomes the glue of our lives. It is important that we attend worship not only for ourselves, but also for the others who join us. Worship is the fountain by which our faith is made abundant. You can worship on your own, but it most times loses something in the translation. Worship in community keeps our lines to God creative, open and strong. I believe that while our worship may never be complete, it is undoubtedly the best thing God has given us this side of heaven.

I hope to see you Sunday. I love you all.

Blessings to you all,

Love,

Bill

RECTOR SWAP FOR A DAYEpiphany, Guntersville and Epiphany,

Leed’s are up to something unique. On Sunday, October 9th, we will switch priests for a day. This means I will be at Epiph-any, Leed’s for their two services, and The Reverend Lynette Lanphere will be

here in Guntersville.

Epiphany, Leed’s is where Jennifer Riddle now worships when she is away from St. Martin’s. I know that you will enjoy Lyn-ette. She is a fine priest, a fine preacher, and an outstanding person in her own right. We hope to do this once a year to share our Epiphany’s with each other. I’m telling you, don’t miss her. Lynette is outstanding.

Currently, Lynette serves on the Depart-ment of Christian Formation and is a member of the Vestry Facilitators' Network for the diocese of Alabama. She is serving a term as a spiritual advisor for the Secretariat of Alabama Cursillo; she's also served on summer camp staffs as well as a spiritual director for Happening, New Beginnings, and Cursillo.

Welcome Shelly HardinWe all know and love Shelly Hardin. She has been around the halls of Epiphany with family for years. Now, however, we welcome her to a new ministry among us. Shelly is now our Children’s Christian Education Director and Youth Minster. I, as your rector am overjoyed to welcome Shelly abroad to this joyous but demanding ministry. I believe has the unique skills to do a tremendous work of God among our young people.

Shelly will from time to time need our help for the various min-istries she leads. I hope that each of us will volunteer whenever possible. It takes all of us working hand and hand with each and with God to allow this church to move forward in love and ministry.

INQUIRERS CLASS BEGAN SEPTEMBER 25

If you are interested in joining the Episcopal Church and Epiphany, or (relearning what makes us Episcopalian this class could be for you. We will meet upstairs in the Sunday School area, specifically in the EFM room. The class will meet each Sunday from September 25 to November 20 from 9:45am until 10:15am. FLOWERS AND CANDLES FOR 2012

The Altar Guild is planning for flowers and candles for 2012. This is a beautiful and thoughtful way to celebrate, honor, and remember those in our lives who mean so much to us.

For your convenience, on Sunday, October 2, I will be in the Parish Hall after the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services with the sign up sheets for flowers, candles and the special day flowers; Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, All Saints’ and Christmas.

After October 2, the sign up sheets for 2012 will be posted on the bulletin board across from the church office. Please remember that these are done on a first come – first serve basis. Place your order now or you may call Marsha at 256-571-2300. If a flower date you would like is already spoken for, look at that same date on the candle list.

Rodney’s bills the Sunday altar flowers to each individ-ual.

The candle dedications are $10.00 per date and are pay-able to the church. We appreciate your payment before your dedication date so that the church’s records and your year-end statement are correct. This helps Martha mark your donation(s) properly and promptly. Please make your check payable to Epiphany and note that it is for candles and for what date.

“By the grace of God, it is given…”

The Church of the Epiphany has flourished during the many years since it’s beginning in 1905 primarily because of God’s blessing on it and because of the devoted service and many lov-ing gifts of its parishioners. Our present church building is a marvelous example of this. Over the years many loving gifts and memorials have enhanced the building so that we now worship God in serene surroundings.

Our church has presented many opportunities for us to give new gifts and memorials for the glory of God and to enhance our wor-ship surroundings. There is no more meaningful way to perpetu-ate the names of our loved ones than to establish a permanent memorial for them to the glory of God. Gifts to commemorate deceased loved ones or in thanksgiving as “living memorials” in honor of living relatives, friends, or associates may be offered. Gifts honoring others for significant achievements are also en-couraged.

With the growth of our parish we need to put more prayer books and Alleluia III Song books in our pews and replace the worn books.

Book of Common Prayer $20.00 each; need 20

Alleluia III Song books $20.00 each; need 80

If you are interested in a making a gift to Epiphany, please contact the church office, 256-582-4897.

We will place a memorial book plate in each book purchased with your specific dedication. For example:

This Alleluia III Song Book is dedicated to the Glory of God and in Thanksgiving for the Choir of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany by (donor’s name), November 2011

I would like to thank everyone who participated in the preparation and serving of the Lunch on Sunday. I am not much of a cook and the help of the group made everything perfect. Special thanks are in order for many not on the committee, i.e. Randy Alexander, Rusty Ogden, Pam Abney and Paula Dabney who helped in the kitchen. Carol Friday, Kim Adams, Mickey Taylor, Alice Mask, Valerie Fleming, Doug Dixon, Sam and Sheri Harrison, Father Bill, Lynn and Gary Beasley, and of course Will Smith who decorated the beauti-

ful tables. In addition, many in the congregation baked bread and make desserts for this special occasion. Thanks to every-one. Great job. The food was great and so much fun. Thanks again. We have a little break now until Thanksgiving.Love all of you. Thanks again, Maggie Muegge

EPIPHANY ACCEPTS CREDIT CARD’S IN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBERThanks to Susan Armstrong, and the Live Auction and Holiday Bazaar, Epiphany will be able to accept credit cards throughout the month of October and November. This means that if you desire to purchase something at the Auction or Bazaar on your credit card and receive points on your card, we will be able to do this transaction.

It also means that if you want to use your credit card to finish out your pledge, debt reduction pledge, or even Commons Building pledge this is possible in October and November.

Or, if you want to give a gift towards flooring or furniture to the Common’s Building and use your Credit Card, here you go. The credit card access is not meant to be pushy, but because so many people said they enjoyed earning the bonus points that credit cards offer. The service costs money so we will only be financially able to offer it in October and November. Make an appointment with Martha in the office.

Cards accepted are:

About 40 percent of Guntersville Elementary School stu-dents eat both meals at school by qualifying for the free or reduced price Federal lunch program. The Church at Lake Guntersville started “Blessings in a Backpack,” a local program based on a nation-wide organization, to make sure those children have nutritious food to eat out-side school hours. The program in Marshall County started in January of 2011 at Guntersville Elementary, but plans to include Cherokee and Claysville schools in January or as soon as funding is available. We have 225 children at Cherokee and about 75 children at Claysville that we want to help as soon as possible.

Blessings in a Backpack is a results-oriented program. This unique program is designed to feed elementary school children whose families qualify for the federal Free and Reduced Price Meal program, and have little to no food on the weekends. Better test scores, improved reading skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the success of this program.

$80 feeds a child in the program for an entire school year. Following a donation, a school is chosen and a lo-cal grocer partners with the program to provide food for meals in the backpacks. Every Friday, students receive their backpacks with staples that require little or no preparation. They return with their backpacks on Mon-day ready to learn.

Blessings in a Backpack is a 501 C (3) non-profit organi-zation currently feeding over 37,600 children in 216 schools in 32 U.S. states and three countries - Can-ada, Columbia and Haiti. The program is a hybrid of pri-vate sector funding and public partnership carried out in public schools. We are feeding the future of America, one school at a time.

Adam and Eve said, 'Lord, when we were in the garden, you walked with us every day. Now we do not see you any more. We are lonesome here, and it is difficult for us to remember how much you love us.'

And God said, I will create a companion for you that will be with you and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourselves.'

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam and Eve.And it was a good animal. And God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and Eve and he wagged his tail .

And Adam said, 'Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal.'

And God said, 'I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.'

And Dog lived with Adam and Eve and was a companion to them and loved them.

And they were comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that an angel came to the Lord and said, 'Lord, Adam and Eve have become filled with pride. They strut and preen like peacocks and they believe they are worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught them that they are loved, but perhaps too well.'

And God said, I will create for them a companion who will be with them and who will see them as they are. The companion will remind them of their limitations, so they will know that they are not always worthy of adoration.'

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam and Eve.

And Cat would not obey them. And when Adam and Eve gazed into Cat's eyes, they were reminded that they were not the supreme beings.

And Adam and Eve learned humility.And they were greatly improvedAnd God was pleased ... . . . . . ..And Dog was happy. . . . .

And Cat didn’t care one way or the other ....

Blessing of the Animals—October 9

The service and blessing takes place at 3:00 p.m. on the front lawn of the church. Everything from cats and dogs to ferrets, horses, boa constrictors and fish have been blessed in past years. No matter what species your best friends may be, bring them to receive God’s blessing. As Fr. Bill says “I will bless anything but not necessarily touch everything”. All animals should be on a leash, tether or caged.
