Dear Neighbours,I never thought I’d get fed up of strawberries! I tidied the bed up in April, gave it a bit of top-dressing and hoped and prayed that I’d get a better crop than last year, which was nothing short of pathetic. Lo and behold, my prayers were answered - with knobs on! Pound after pound of strawberries just kept coming from about the middle of June and they have only now really fi nished. If they do the same next year I think we’ll have to open a jam factory. Shouldn’t complain, I suppose. We’ve had a good year in the gar-den with everything doing very well and lots of fruit on the plum tree to come later on. Amazing what a good bit of sun will do.

This month, I’ve dug out another dialect story from the “Goodies” book. I’m assuming most people can understand them. I sometimes have a bit of a problem, being a Hull grown lad but I think once you get the rhythm it gets easier. I just have to imagine my late mother-in-law speaking and that usually does the trick for me! So have a go at “‘Enny” on page 8. When I was young no-one taught me anything about money matters and until the subject gets taught correctly at school kids these days still have very little idea on how to manage money. With that in mind I thought you might appreciate the fi nance article on page 26, which explains how you can give them a bit of a start and try and get them to take an interest. There’s a very nice fi sh recipe this month and Pippa Greenwood shares some ideas on how to attack weeds.

If you contact any of the advertisers in the magazine, please don’t forget to say where you saw their ads!

Best Wishes,Mick

‘ENNYHere’s another dialect story from “Goodies and Other Stories in a Yorkshire Dialect”, compiled by Walter F. Turner and printed around the time of the First World War. The stories in the book are not his own, but transcribed from meetings with “the natives of N.E. Yorkshire” and are “illustrative of their harmless and often unconscious humour”.

Pensions for babies Stakeholders

Probably the easiest type of pension to take out for your child is the Stakeholder pension. Anyone is allowed to set one up which means that a child’s legal guardian(s) can start a pension for newborns.

You can pay in up to £2,880 each tax year, which is then topped up by a government tax-back incentive to £3,600. You can stop and start contributions as you wish without being penalised and the minimum amount you can pay in at any time is £20.

Anyone can add to it and if the full amount is paid each year, by the time the child is 55 they will have well over £700,000 and if they access the account at 70 they will have over £1.8 million.

The money invested won’t be accessible until the child reaches 55 meaning they can’t blow it all when they hit 18. Once they start working, they can also contribute. They will receive tax benefi ts if their income is less than £130,000.

You can fi nd out more at Moneymagpie.com. There’s also a list of registered stakeholder pension scheme providers at www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk.

SiPPs

You can also set up a Self-invested Personal Pension (SiPP) for your little one. Like a Stakeholder, they are open to anyone but the diff erence here is that you manage the money in it. So instead of leaving it to a pension fund to decide what to invest in, you choose the products yourself, whether it be shares, bonds, commercial property or other things.

Junior ISAsISAs are savings accounts which allow you to deposit a maximum of £3,600 a year completely tax-free, attracting interest as well. Your child has access to the

money when they turn 18.

Should you contribute the maximum amount each year, the fund could grow to a whopping £64,800 plus interest by the time they reach adulthood.

You can choose either a cash ISA or a stocks and shares one. As your child has a good few years for the fund to grow, you could start with a stocks and shares ISA and then gradually change into cash for the last 5 to hold onto gains.

The only snag with a Junior ISA is that if you were eligible for a Child Trust Fund you can’t open a Junior ISA. A good place for further information is www.familyinvestments.co.uk .

Teaching your child about moneyA sure-fi re way of making your child a millionaire, or at least comfortably off , is to teach him or her how to manage money early on.

Start as soon as they can toddle round the supermarket with you. Ask them to tell you the numbers on the price labels and then, later, run around fi nding the cheapest version of what you want to buy. Give them pocket money and set up a savings account, showing them how their money can grow over time. Go to pfeg.org for downloadable fi nancial education guides that will help.

Remember, it doesn’t matter how much money your children have later on, if they know how to live below their means and save for their futures they will never be poor.

Fun fact: On average, parents are putting savings of £42.45 aside a month for each child.

How to make your child a millionaire

FinanceRaising children costs a small fortune (it’s currently estimated at around £200,000), but if you’re clever, you could help them to become millionaires. Here are a few ways to make your child rich.

Mediterranean Fish BakeServes 4 Ready in 50 minutes

This is a great one-pan dish full of fresh fl avour. Monkfi sh is quite pricey but the meaty fl esh is delicious and bakes really well. However, you can replace it with cod loin, salmon steaks or thick pieces of haddock fi llet if you prefer. Serve with a green salad and warmed ciabatta bread to mop up all the lovely herb and lemon fl avoured pan juices.

Ingredients:• 2 tbsp olive oil (choose a good

quality fruity one)• 350g small new potatoes,

halved• 1 red pepper, deseeded and

cut into chunks• 1 yellow pepper, deseeded

and cut into chunks• 1 green pepper, deseeded

and cut into chunks• 225g small plum tomatoes,

halved• 4 monkfi sh fi llets (each

weighing about 150g)• 50g butter, softened• Pared rind and juice from

1 small lemon, plus extra wedges to serve

• 1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano• Salt and freshly ground black

pepper

TipReplace the peppers with sliced courgettes, chunks of celery and baby button mushrooms, if liked.

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Place the oil in a large non-stick roasting tin and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Add the potatoes to the tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once.

Add the peppers and tomatoes to the roasting tin and toss to coat in the hot oil. Make a space in the tin and add the monkfi sh fi llets. Return the roasting tin to the oven for 10 minutes.

Dot the butter over the fi sh fi llets and sprinkle over the lemon rind, juice and oregano. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and roast for a further 5-10 minutes until the fi sh is just cooked through and the potatoes and peppers are tender.

Slice each monkfi sh fi llet and arrange with the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes on four warmed serving plates. Spoon over the pan juices and serve immediately with lemon wedges.

Ask a dictionary the defi nition of a weed and you’ll read that it’s ‘a plant growing in the wrong place’. Ask a gardener, and they’ll tell

you that weeds are often the number one menace in their garden. So if you want to wage war on those pesky weeds, and stand a chance of winning, take a look at my multi-pronged attack strategy.

Off with their HeadsWhatever the weed problem, it’s essential to prevent them from setting seed. Make sure you cut off its head before it has a chance to even start to set seed. The old saying that ‘one year’s seed is seven years’ weed’ isn’t far from the truth.

Stop StowawaysWhen you’re next shopping for plants in your local garden centre or nursery make sure that you only bring home what you want, not those pesky weed stowaways that often lurk on the compost surface. I always do a bit of weeding before buying, especially for weeds such as the innocent looking hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta).

Spaghetti rootsSome weeds, like couch grass, bindweed and nettles, have amazingly resilient and far-reaching underground stems or roots. Whatever you do, don’t succumb to the temptation to use a powered cultivator or rotovator as this will chop the roots into little bits and end up spreading and increasing the problem in the process.

Time it RightSome weeds such as the purple fl owered oxalis spread by forming tiny ‘bulbils’ or miniature bulbs below ground. If you try to dig these weeds out now, the bulbils will be shed into the surrounding soil as you lift the plant out, making matters worse. Wait until next spring when the bulbils will be fi rmly attached and weed them out then.

Lawn LoutsLawn weeds such as dandelions and daisies are diffi cult to control as unlike the taller weeds, these rosette-forming plants won’t be harmed as you mow the lawn. One of the best, albeit slow, methods is to tackle them with a sturdy old kitchen knife or a daisy-grubber tool.

Deep Rooted ProblemsSome weeds such as docks and dandelions have tough and chunky roots that are very diffi cult to kill. And to make matters worse, if you leave any sizeable bit of the root in the soil, it’s likely to form a new plant. Do everything you can to take out the entire root as you’ll be saving a lot of time in the long run.

Laying CarpetFor large areas, try the carpet option; literally covering the surface with a layer or two of old carpet, held in place with bricks. If the carpet is placed fl uff y side down and left in place for at least 18 months, the weeds will start to die off from lack of light. Make sure that the carpet is made from natural fi bres, not synthetic or else you’ll be left with it in the soil, and for allotments, check that there are no restrictions on using carpet.

Hoe, hoe, hoeAn old fashioned and still just as useful method of weed control is the hoe. They’re a great way to weed your garden, especially if it’s largely annual weeds such as chickweed or groundsel that invade your plot. Keep the hoe sharp and use it regularly.

Be careful what you CompostOnly compost the green, leafy bits of weeds; avoid any chunky roots, and never put any fl owering or seeding weeds in the compost heap. Some weed seeds will easily survive most domestic composting systems.

Spice of Life - CarawayCaraway seeds are one of the oldest cultivated spices. The caraway plant is easy to grow and the leaves and roots are also edible. Julius Caesar’s army made bread from the ground roots of the caraway plant, which look like parsnips. The small, brown, ridged caraway seeds look very similar to cumin but their flavours are very different. Caraway seeds have an aniseed taste and are used in many European dishes including sauerkraut, rye bread, sausages, various cheeses and the delicious British seedcake. The seeds keep their flavour for a long time if stored in an airtight container in a dark place.

Due to its long history, caraway has a number of intriguing beliefs attached to it. Ancient Egyptians put the seeds into tombs with their dead to protect against evil spirits. Other cultures made it into a love potion. Another belief was that it prevented theft and voluntary straying. Anything from possessions, people and livestock would have been rubbed with caraway.

Medical applications of caraway are mainly as a digestive. It has been recommended for curing colic and for settling nausea. Seeds are also chewed to freshen breath and flavours mouthwash, toothpaste and chewing gum.
