Men’s Health Week follow up In June, the City of Salisbury ran its Men’s Health Week event for blokes over 50 at the Para Hills Community Hub.

It was great to have Tyson Edwards (Adelaide Crows dual

premiership player and former Port Adelaide assistant coach) join Jim Binder (City of Salisbury Coordinator of Wellbeing) on the couch for a chat. Tyson covered his early days of growing up in the country and his days with West Adelaide as well as his experience being drafted to the Adelaide Crows. Tyson had some entertaining insight into Malcolm Blight, showdowns and the ‘Ramsgate incident’, the use of the ‘torp’ and of course the ‘97 and ‘98 premierships.

The next speaker, Brian Gillies, shared with us his story as someone who seemed least likely to be diagnosed with bowel cancer, and his journey back to health. The story highlighted the importance of doing something about it if you notice something is not quite right. His story was inspirational especially given he came back to complete an Iron Man event after beating cancer.

The men got an opportunity to get a free health check, visit stalls from Sonder (the educator arm for local GPs) and DVA (Department of Veterans Affairs). The day finished off with music entertainment by Pat Trimboli - a local singer guitarist whose passion is his music and the connection this brings to all of us.

In Australia, Men's Health Week provides a platform for challenging and debating key issues in men's health and to raise the profile of men, their health outcomes and health needs around the country each June.

Our approach celebrates the strengths of men, the contributions they make and the important role they play in society. It is as much a week of celebration and engagement of men with a serving of health on the side!

Men’s Sheds

Men’s Sheds are quickly popping up all around Australia, with one likely to be found close to you. The sheds function is to provide a safe, welcoming and encouraging space for men (and women) to work on their projects, learn new skills and develop valuable friendships. Meet other new people and use your skills or learn new ones in a friendly supportive environment. Below is some information on two located within the City of Salisbury:

The Woodworkers Shed Northern Districts SA Located at Lawrie Ave, Salisbury North (across from Salisbury Swimming Centre), this Shed celebrates their 20 years of service this year and is looking for new members to join their friendly team! They do fantastic work by making wooden toys for local charities, such as Lions Clubs, to distribute to disadvantaged children.

Their next Introductory Project Day is Saturday 3 August 2019 from 9am to 2pm. Come and see examples of their work and find out more. Enquires to the Secretary on 0417 851 159.

The Shed (Edinburgh) Open Monday to Thursday from 9am to 3pm, this shed is located at Peter Badcoe VC Complex off Taranaki Road, Edinburgh. Come meet the team. Activities include:

• Wood work • Arts & crafts • Social interaction • Metal work

• Basic computer training

Interested in Playing Backgammon?

The Jack Young Centre is taking registrations of interest from people Over 50 who would like to potentially be a part of a Backgammon group on a Thursday afternoon (1-3pm) at the centre. Backgammon is one of the oldest known board games. Its history can be traced back nearly 5,000 years to archaeological discoveries in Mesopotamia. It is a two player game where each player has fifteen pieces which move between twenty-four triangles according to the roll of two dice. The objective of the game is to be first to move all fifteen checkers off the board. It's a game to use and enhance your brain as the essence of any game is to use your intellect and to foresee your opponent's moves. In many aspects the game success depends from the random rolls of the die - but even with unlucky hands, there is a chance to win, just don’t make mistakes and use your opponent's weaknesses. Cost: $4/week (includes a cuppa) and a yearly membership of $10 with the Jack Young Centre.

If you are interested, contact Jim on 8406 8251.

Working on your Wellbeing

’Action for Happiness’ App If you have a smart phone then I would suggest downloading the ‘Action for Happiness’ App. The app is like having a little personal action coach in your pocket which:

• gives you friendly 'nudges' with an action idea each day

• Sends you inspiring messages to give you a boost

• Helps you connect & share ideas with like-minded people

Here’s an example of one I received: ‘You are allowed to be proud of yourself even for taking small steps’ People are finding it really helpful and inspiring –and I know I do!’ (editor) www.actionforhappiness.org/app While you are there, check out their monthly calendars which are packed with actions you can take to help create a happier and kinder world.
