EDITION: 5 31 March 2017 Valley View Hello everyone, GETTING READY FOR LEARNING Its that time of the term where we all wonder where the time has gone. Throughout this term teachers have been work- ing with students to set strong foundations for learning so students know exactly what is expected of them whilst they contin- ue to learn and grow here at school. Students this term have been engaged with teach- ing and learning about the behaviours that they need to practice and exhibit whilst participating in all learning experiences here at school. The teachers have ensured that there are clear guidelines and specific rituals and rou- tines that all contribute to students achieving the de- sired outcomes through- out the day. These rou- tines and rituals support the learning for the entire year and are critical in all students achieving suc- cess. SCHOOL COUNCIL Our first school council meeting welcomed our new parent and staff rep- resentatives. We had a very productive meeting and some interesting dis- cussion about various matters. Being a member of school council enables members of our communi- ty to contribute to the governance of our school in an authentic manner. I wish to thank all partici- pants and look forward to a year of productive meet- ings. END OF DAY ARRANGE- MENTS FOR YOUR CHILDREN The teachers in our school care for your children whilst they are with us be- tween the hours of 8.45am until 3.45pm. Our duty of care extends past the 3.15 pm dismissal time and we can assure you that appropriate supervi- sion will be in place on a daily basis. We strongly urge you to be ON TIME when picking up your children at the end of the day. Younger children may become dis- tressed when waiting for their parents or carers to arrive. If you are going to be late, please notify the school and we can let your children know and keep them at the office. Being on time is a funda- mental societal skill that enables us to participate effectively with other peo- ple. Your children appreciate it when you are on time, at the end of the day and at the beginning of the day. Being on time is a respect- ful practice, we hope that you can support your chil- drens learning by being on time EVERY DAY! I wish you a restful holi- day break and look for- ward to welcoming you back in Term 2. Regards Carmela

  • LN1 News! On Tuesday our BVPS community cel-ebrated Harmony Day. LN1 students participated in a range of learning experiences prior to this event. With such a range of cultures within our school, students were able to explore our similarities and differences. They designed flags celebrating diversity and emphasising what makes us unique. Students also loved tasting foods from all around the world and watching the wonderful Indigenous performers! “Harmony Day is a special day be-cause we share food from different countries.” Omer “I like eating the food and we watch the people doing a show.” Jiesikah “We celebrate languages, cultures and we show other people respect.” Ibra-him “We share things with people and if they want to play we say yes.” Brody

Harmony day is a great tuning in ex-perience leading up to our Enrichment unit next Term which will focus on our family history as well Australian histo-ry. This week you will receive a letter asking you to send in a baby photo of your child as well as provide us with some interesting information about your family history. We look forward to learning more about diversity in Term 2. Amy, Wendy, Jamielee & Rob.

LN2 News This term in LN2 has been a BLAST! We have been working on making connections through strategies such as: text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world. We have also been learning to convince our readers with our per-suasive writing using different tech-niques, text types and text structures. One of the highlights for us this term was being selected as the LN2 Class representatives. We were lucky enough to attend an excursion about being a successful leader we can to make our great school a better place. Over the holidays, students are en-couraged to use Bug Club to practice their reading.

In maths, we have been working on number bonds and some lucky stu-dents have been working on rounding using thinking strings. These students are enjoying being challenged and are working hard to develop their maths knowledge and understanding. Over the holidays, students are encouraged to use Sumdog as much as they can!

In enrichment we have been working on how to escalate and deescalate our emotions. We have done this by creat-ing a de-escalation map and by creat-ing a cheer up and cheer down stu-dent safety plan. We have also learnt how our body reacts to stress, why we become stressed and how we can make ourselves feel better when this happens. All of us are looking forward to camp. Most students have brought back the note but we want everyone to partici-pate in this event. If you are interest-ed in this upcoming event go to our neighbourhood leader Mr Cripps and get a form. It’s not too late! We will take notes and deposits from anyone who wants to come up until the end of Week 1 of next term (April 21st).

We hope you have a safe holidays and a happy Easter (if you celebrate!)

RESPONSIBLE PET PROGRAM The Kindergarten Program had two visits by qualified Pet Educators and their dogs for the chil-dren to learn how to safely interact with dogs in the community. The children learned some key concepts through songs, dancing and a picture storybook which showed us the things we should and shouldn’t do with a dog to protect ourselves. Here are some of the things we learned: - No owner. No lead. No touch! - Dogs have very sensitive hearing, much more sensitive than us. - There always needs to be a grown up there when playing with a dog. - We never touch a dog when it’s sleeping, eating, sick or a mummy dog looking after its pup-pies. We then all had the chance to pat the dog! Putting out first to let her have a sniff to check if it’s okay with the dog.
