Riddles are fascinating. We love riddles, because we feel somewhere deep down inside we have the capacity to find the answer, to untangle the mystery, to solve the problem.

Even though human minds are limited, we still try to overcome the big riddles of life, and there’s just so many examples that serve as an outstanding record of human accomplishment, and human desire to find the answers.

Even more fascinating is the twist that comes from God. God himself is the one great big riddle no-one in the history of the world has yet been able to solve.

While many attempts have been made to prove the existence of God, the truth is that the riddle remains.

out their studies for 2017.

• For those travelling over the Christmas period, stay safe.

• For all families, that the love, joy, peace and hope of Christmas will be in their homes this holiday break.

In our Year 11/12 Closing Ceremony last week, 137 Year 12 Graduates were able to celebrate their achievement of 13 years of learning.

The Closing Service and Celebration included special presentations to students who had achieved academic success, and other awards to those who were acknowledged for contributions to the Cornerstone community and beyond. Each student also received their Student Achievement Record.

The theme of 'change' was prevalent throughout both the Service and Mr Fielke's key address to the students. I include a reflection below.

The entire journey, from A to Z, has been a journey of change, some of which has come naturally, but some of which is the result, not just of who you are, but of the investment made in you by those whose job it has been to love you the most.

As you graduate tonight, yes, you have changed. But be aware, you have been changed. Each of you represents the blood, sweat and tears, not only of what you have achieved, but also, of so many who have seen the potential in you, and who have invested in your potential.

As I pondered all of this from a spiritual perspective, I considered a parable that Jesus once told about this idea of investment.

The parable was, in fact, about a bunch of people who were given an amount of cash to go and invest. The first couple did really well, and were even congratulated for the mindset that led them to invest successfully. The third person in the parable, on the other hand, took a different view to the first two, and went and buried the cash in the backyard. While they didn’t make any profit, they were really pleased that they hadn’t done their dough either. Unfortunately, the end of the parable doesn’t turn out so well for the hole-digger.

The moral, if you like – is not about what to do with your cash. The moral, is to know what to do with the investment that God has placed in you. Your job, Class of 2017, is not to go home tonight and dig a hole in the backyard. Your job is to recognise that you are an investment – yes, you have changed, but yes, you have been changed, for purpose and meaning in the world beyond the gates of Cornerstone.

Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing students next year when school commences on Monday, 29 January 2018.

Pastor Albert Gast

words of blessingDo not deceive yourselves. If any of you think you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become “fools” so that you may become wise.

1 Corinthians 3:18

answer to the dynamic in the relationship between God and humans. That is to solve our salvation problem, we simply need to live a just and good life. No matter which human being you ask, no matter which religion you put under the microscope, it’s always the same answer, that we are justified by the life we live, and that life must be good.

But the riddle only grows, especially when you think about this question from a bible perspective. If living right is the answer to our greatest riddle, then why did Jesus need to come to Earth? Was it just to tell us what we already know, or was it to tell us the answer to the hardest riddle ever formulated?

The answer lies somewhere in the riddle. Jesus did not enter the world from the perspective of law, but from the perspective of grace.

In other words, and here’s the bit we find hard to believe – Jesus fulfilled the law, for us, by grace. He died! And he did it so that we don’t need to justify ourselves. He has done it on our behalf. He showed us we are so sinful we could kill God’s Son. And he showed us that death is not the end of the story.

God’s complex riddle is answered with a response no-one ever believes could be right, except through faith. We’re smart, but not that smart. The wisdom of God, as the New Testament says, is foolishness in the eyes of the world.

So, in terms of answering life’s riddles, for the most part it’s our minds that will sort it all out. In terms of God, though, it’s our hearts and the eyes of faith that solve the problem for us.

Knowing you are loved by God may motivate you to showing his love to others. His love first, our love second. Thanks be to God.

news and eventsYear 12 Art ExhibitionOn Friday, 17 November, Atelier was buzzing with the excitement of the opening of the annual Year 12 Art and Design exhibition.

For many students, creating an art or design work at this level is an intensely personal experience. It requires the artist to reflect upon themselves, their interests and experiences and to respond to the world around them.

It has been quite a journey for each of the students, who have faced various challenges and learned much about themselves.

The exhibition was a fantastic way to conclude the year and celebrate the achievements of our Art and Design students.

Each year Cornerstone purchases an artwork for our collection. This year the selected work was, ‘My City’, acrylic on canvas, by Caitlin Melville.

Keep an eye out for it around the College reception area.

Arts Alive 2On Tuesday, 21 November, parents and friends were treated to an evening featuring work from some of our talented Year 8 and 9 Art, Drama and Music students and a ‘glimpse into the classrooms’ of these subjects.

On arrival and during interval, guests had the opportunity to see an excellent exhibition of Year 8 and 9 Visual Art works. Also on display were the Year 12 Art and Design major works.

The first half of the program in Atelier, featured a range of musical items, including Year 9 Music classes, soloists and performances from the co-curricular groups: Little Big Band and JIVE (Junior and Intermediate Vocal Ensemble). A number of short Drama items were also provided.

Thank you to all students who presented work on the night, our fantastic Arts staff who prepared and worked with students, and to the many parents and friends who attended in support of our junior Arts students on the night.

Mad Hatters Tea PartyRecently five Year 11 drama students, old scholar Annalise Johnson (Tweedle Dee) along with teacher Kristen Doherty (Tweedle Dum) were roving performers at the Mad Hatters Tea Party in Balhannah.

The Tea Party aimed to raise money for Catherine House, a foundation that helps women and children from domestic violence and child abuse backgrounds.

The girls entertained the crowd of over a hundred people for two and a half hours and were absolutely sensational!

news and eventsMiddle School Orientation DayOn Friday, 24 November, 160 new Cornerstone students joined us for their Orientation Day. Some were nervous, whilst others were excited for the experience. On arrival they were sorted into their Houses.

After a short welcoming message from our Principal, Mr Fielke and one of the Middle School House Leaders, the students were introduced into their new Home Group members.

Each Home Group participated in some type of activity, which ranged from sharing food to introductory games. The Home Group members were welcoming and excited to greet the new students. After a short devotion in Home Group the new students learnt about some of the unique and special aspects of Cornerstone College and in particular their House.

Soon after they were split into small groups and taken on a short tour of the College, led by a Middle School House Leader. The groups then returned to their Core Groups and participated in many team building activities and some writing tasks lead by their Core Group Teachers.

To conclude the day, the new Year 8 students spent time getting to know current Cornerstone students and stayed with a buddy in their class for lessons 5 and 6.

The new Year 7 students were given a taste of the Arts and Drama at Cornerstone. This also included information about the Extra Curricular activities that they could choose to be involved in. They viewed performances by music groups and Year 8 Drama classes and they also learnt about programs that are run at Cornerstone, such as STRETCH.

It is always a pleasure to welcome new students to Cornerstone. We look forward to their return next year as part of our growing community.

DIARY DATES 2018

Uniform Requirements for Term 1 2018As we get ready for a new school year, now is a good time to ensure you have your summer uniform. All items are available from The Uniform Shop at the Homemaker Centre, 6 Dutton Road, Mount Barker, phone 8398 3983. Selected items are also available from Cornerstone’s Second-Hand Uniform Shop located next to EFM at the College.

Students wearing their uniform correctly and neatly, shows a commitment to our community and promotes a sense of belonging. Please note, Year 7 students remain in their regular sports uniform throughout the year.

Here are some focus areas to be aware of for Term 1, 2018:

• All students must wear a College hat for outdoor PE lessons and at recess and lunch breaks

• Hair - shoulder length or longer is to be tied back

• Dresses are to be worn ‘on the knee’

• Students are to be clean-shaven

• A maximum of one earring, in the lower lobe of each ear

• Plain silver or gold stud (max. 6mm diameter)

• Plain silver or gold sleeper (max. 12mm diameter)

• Clear diamante (max. 6mm diameter)

• White pearl (max. 6mm diameter)

• It is our preference that students do not wear facial piercings at the College. Students with a nose or ear cartilage piercing may wear a clear insert until healed and the insert can be removed

• If getting a facial piercing, please do so at the start of the holidays so that it can heal and be removed before school returns

• In 2018, we will have completed the six-year rollout of the new uniform and College logo. This means that all old items such as the maroon jumper and any items bearing the old College crest are no longer acceptable uniform items

In addition, our girls now have the option to wear the short-sleeved College blouse and girls’ navy College shorts instead of the summer dress. We hope many will take up this option in 2018.

Comprehensive details of uniform expectations can be found in the Student Diary or please click the photo right for the uniform brochure.
