From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents In previous editions of the newsletter I have mentioned a review of traffic management in and around the School. Further work has now occurred with the main driveway into the Junior School precinct having been upgraded with the addition of speed bumps or what are sometimes referred to as ‘traffic calming devices’. This continues work in this vicinity for the safety of children and adults. Character Development – REACH Program Over the past three years, a team of Junior School teachers has been involved in a significant project, examining school improvement. This has directed a range of curriculum work as well as the development of a pastoral care framework. Junior School teachers worked through a process looking at the end point, asking the question ‘What are the attributes we would like all Junior School boys to have as part of their character development by the end of Year 6?’ This is referred to by the boys and staff as REACH, with each letter in the acronym standing for a particular attribute as outlined below:

Respect – being respectful towards one another and with adults

Engagement – being engaged with all aspects of school

Awareness – being aware of the feelings of others

Communication – being able to communicate well with others

Humility – being humble about achievement and success

Taking the first letter of each of the key words we end up with the acronym ‘REACH’ and this is described pictorially in the image below, with a hand reaching out, with five attributes matching up with the fingers and thumb on one hand. These attributes provide a focus for the boys each week, are promoted at assemblies and discussed in class. REACH certificates are awarded at weekly assemblies with boys being acknowledged for demonstrating these attributes.

Mini character development lessons have been designed for each year level around these concepts. This program operates at a deeper level for Year 5 boys, with their formal sessions commencing earlier in the year, preparing these boys to be our senior year level in 2019. I thank our Pastoral Care Committee (Mr Sharpe, Mrs MacFarlane, Miss McLiesh, Mrs Jones and Mrs Davidson) for the fine work they have undertaken developing this program. Brant Garvey – NoXcuses Workshop On Tuesday, all boys from Years 3 to 6 were involved in Brant Garvey’s NoXcuses Workshop. Mr Garvey is a husband, a father, a Paralympian, a motivational speaker and creator of the NoXcuses Mindset. He competes as an above the knee amputee in triathlons, is a world record holder, and is currently training for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Brant has been brought to Toowoomba by a local company, Tilly’s, to work in a number of schools. The aim of the program is to support children’s character development, understanding how to deal with bullying and how to develop a resilient attitude when facing challenges. Our students were required to do some pre and post session work by Mr Garvey, ensuring deeper thinking was occurring. This was a very positive session for our students and staff.

Book Week Book Week is promoted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA), which was established in 1945, and is a not for profit, volunteer run organisation that aims to engage the community with literature for young Australians. The CBCA presents annual awards to books of literary merit and for outstanding contribution to Australian children's literature. The short listed books were announced some time ago and the prize winning books were announced nearly two weeks ago. Our Junior School librarian, Miss Michelle Worthington is a CBCA book judge, one of only three judges in Australia in the older reader category. This means Miss Worthington reads a great many books, which seems just about right for a librarian! This is a most prestigious national position and we are very proud of and pleased for Michelle.

The celebrations around Book Week culminated last Thursday with boys and staff dressed in costume, our annual Doorways Competition, with doorways and classrooms decorated, a special Book Week assembly, visiting authors and illustrators and a celebration of books and reading. This is one of my favourite days of the school year!

This was a most wonderful occasion and I congratulate boys, staff and parents for the enormous effort that went into all that occurred. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Uniform Just recently I have found that many of the boys do not regularly clean their black school shoes and some do not have the correct hat or in the upper primary, are not wearing a belt. It would be appreciated if you could ensure that your son attends school with clean shoes and the correct uniform. It is also important that the boys bring their sport clothes on the day that their class has a PE lesson. There are also occasions when an individual child does not participate in their PE lesson because of illness or injury. Communication from parents to either the classroom teacher or PE teacher informing them that the child is not participating would be appreciated. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

From Head of Teaching and Learning Homework Expectations Homework is a hot topic in many homes! During Book Week, the boys read every night instead of doing their regular English and Maths activities. When Mr Campbell made this announcement, there was a loud cheer! Homework is an important part of the Junior School academic program because it consolidates work studied in class, helps develop independent work and study habits and provides a link between home and school. By supporting your son to complete his homework diligently, you will be helping to prepare him for Senior School and be instilling life-long habits. If you would like further clarification of the Junior School homework expectations, please refer to the 2018 Junior School Handbook. Premier’s Reading Challenge There were over 1300 schools involved in the2018 Premier’s Reading Challenge. I have received many completed reading logs. If you still have a reading log, could you please return it as soon as possible to ensure the boys receive their certificate from the Premier. Jan Heffernan Head of Teaching and Learning

SEQ Football Final Last Friday, Mr Jeffries took 14 boys from Year 5 and Year 6 to compete in the final of the South East Queensland Football Carnival. The boys lost their two games against McDowall State School (1-3) and Southern Cross Catholic School (0-3). The boys gained a lot from the experience on the day. Thank you to Mr Jeffries and to the parents who travelled to support our boys. Under 5 – Under 8 Swimming Carnival The Junior Swimming Carnival is on Wednesday 12 September. The programme and the final arrangements will be sent out closer to the day. Parents are most welcome to come along and support their son/sons. Prep and Year 1 Gymnastics For the first 7 weeks of term 4, the Prep and Year 1 classes will be travelling to All Stars Gymnastics as a part of their weekly sport. A program has been designed for boys of this age and the centre will provide instructors to coach the boys. The cost of the program is covered by the General Purpose Levy, which parents have already paid. Rugby Congratulations to every boy who played club rugby this season. Thank you to the coaches and parents for your commitment to the season. Tomorrow night, there is a presentation and sausage sizzle for the boys who have played club rugby this term. We look forward to having as many families as possible gather together to celebrate another wonderful year of rugby. The older boys will have their presentation at the end of the GPS season.

The Under 6 Club Rugby Team had a wonderful season, pictured above with their

coach Mr Stains and Mr David Russell (parent). Sports Uniform The boys were recently told that they could wear compression clothing for sport and PE classes. These items are to be blue or black only and are not to be worn all day, only for the PE lesson or for the sporting game.

Science Day On Tuesday 7 August, our Year 5 boys enjoyed a morning of inquiry and discovery of the fascinating phenomena of science. A great selection of hands-on activities ranging from testing predictions to using scientific knowledge to solve problems, was enjoyed with our friends from Fairholme Junior and The Glennie Junior School. The seven rotations included: Activity 1 - Mentos Madness Activity 2 - Paper Plane Aerodynamics Activity 3 - Marble Painting Activity 4 - Forensic Fun Activity 5 - Invisible ink Activity 6 - Food Science Activity 7 - Catapults Overall, it was a time to bring out the lab coats and safety goggles in the name of scientific investigation, and most importantly, to have fun. A big thank you to Mr Jamie Lee for organising this smooth and enjoyable day.

After School Care

What we have done this past fortnight The last fortnight the boys have been participating in a range of exciting activities. The children made a display about the drought. It started off as a group discussion about how the drought is affecting the farmers and their animals and then led to a craft activity. The animals are now on display in the service for our families to see. The boys also enjoyed participating in fun experiments and cooking. The most popular indoor games have been building with Lego and Chess. The most popular outdoor activities have been soccer/kick tennis and playing silent ball. What we have planned for the next week Next week we are going to be working on sustainably and recycling, as a group we are going to try and reuse/recycle as much as we can at after school care. It can be as simple as bringing in bottles and boxes from home for craft or ensuring that we are using scrap paper when possible and recycling as much as we can. We are going to start a food scraps box, if any of our families have chickens or a compost they would like our scraps for they are more than welcome to come into the service and take them home. Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. What to do if your child is absent from After School Care? Please remember parents if your son will be absent from the service call us on 0421 570 461 or notify the customer experience team.
