From the Head of Junior School

Dear Parents We are delighted to welcome parents back onto campus in a more open and consistent manner than was the case for much of last year due to COVID-19 conditions. The Junior School has always been a welcoming environment for our community and we appreciate the way in which parents accepted the restrictions last year. This means parents of Prep students may walk their 4 and 5 year old boys into school and more broadly, this means all parents can walk into school with their son in the morning or to collect their son in the afternoon if they wish. While many families will choose to use the drop off and pick up zones before and after school, the return to a more normal arrangement is very pleasing.

Parents have welcomed the opportunity to walk the boys into school.

We welcome 58 new boys to the Junior School for the start of the year, along with their parents. I extend my very best wishes to all boys, new or continuing, for a successful start to the academic year and trust that 2021 is most positive for all concerned. COVID-19 expectations If you walk into the School to drop off or collect your son, there is no requirement to check in via the visitors’ screen in the office. However, if you visit the school during the day for other reasons you are expected to check in and check out via the Junior School office and the visitors’ screen. All adults are required to follow the COVID conditions with which we have become most familiar including:

• Exercising social distancing of 1.5 metres

• Parents may walk to the classrooms but only a small number are permitted in each classroom at any one time (my recommendation is no more than 4 parents when staff and students are in classrooms)

• Boys are not to attend school if they are unwell

• If boys become unwell during the school day they will be sent to the Health Centre and parents will be asked to collect them from school

• Adults are not to enter the school if they are unwell

• Adults and children are expected to wash their hands regularly or use the hand sanitiser placed around the school.

Finally, all our events involving parents will be assessed as we approach them to ensure we are COVID compliant.

Staff One of the greatest strengths of the Junior School is the quality of the staff. We have wonderful teachers, teacher aides and administrative staff, all of whom enjoy working at Toowoomba Grammar School. A number of new staff join us this year in part due to additional classes being created. We welcome three new teachers, Mrs Nicole Collis (Year 5), Mr Peter Nicholls (Year 2) and Miss Katelyn Hannah (Year 4) to our School. All are experienced teachers who have taught in other independent schools, with their full biographical information having been provided in correspondence that was sent to parents at the end of last year. Miss Maddison Payne, who has worked at our school for a number of years, becomes our Year 1 teacher aide. Miss Danielle Hart has been appointed as a teacher aide to assist in one of the Prep classes. Mr Alastair Bain has been appointed as Stephens Head of House, taking on this role following Mrs Gomes’ resignation. Mr Ben Woolacott has taken on the role of Co-ordinator of IT in the Junior School, taking over from Mr Bain, following his fine work in the role over several years. I thank our staff for their preparations over the past few weeks and I wish them all the very best for a successful and positive 2021. TGS Communication and Social Media (Facebook and Instagram) Parents are able to access communication from the School in a range of ways as follows:

• The Junior School Newsletter will be emailed to parents every second Friday

• Other correspondence will be emailed to all parents or groups of parents

• The TGS App is useful to have on your mobile phone

• The School’s Facebook page and Instagram accounts are popular with many parents and contain information and photographs of events.

Conclusion This is one of my favourite times of the school year. Positive energy resonates throughout the Junior School from the staff and the boys. New uniforms, new shoes, new books and new classes generate optimism and expectation. I would also suggest there is nothing so glorious as a Prep boy’s lunchbox at the start of the year, full of great food to enjoy as the youngest children start their journey at our School. I look forward to a vibrant and rewarding first term for the boys and staff. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Welcome to a new school year. I look forward to meeting all new boys and parents in the coming weeks. At this time of year it is important to ensure that your son has all his school property labelled. This includes his school uniform and his classroom materials. Correct labelling will enable early recovery of such items if they become lost. The location of the lost property box is just outside the staffroom. Your son will be reminded that presentation of his school uniform is also important. As stated in the Student Handbook, the school uniform is as follows: TGS ‘Blues’ – TGS shirt, shorts, socks (with garters), black leather shoes and TGS hat (Akubra – Year 4 to 6; Sports hat – Prep to Year 3). Please encourage your sons to regularly polish their black school shoes. Boys are expected to be ready for class by 8.25am and may be collected at 3.10pm. Staff will be on duty in the playground at 8.00am. The arrival of boys before 8.00am is not encouraged but if this occurs they must sit on the bench seats and stairs outside the Head of Junior School’s office until a staff member starts the morning duty. Staff will be on duty from 3.10pm to 3.30pm each day at the main Junior School drive-through area near the office and the Drop-Off area adjacent to Corfe Boarding House. Boys should be collected from the pick-up zones by the end of this duty otherwise they will be sent to After School Care. Co-curricular Clubs Co-curricular Clubs before and after school will commence in Week 3. You will be provided information regarding these clubs in the near future. Mates Programme The Mates Programme occurs several times each term and is based on the premise of having bigger and older boys supporting smaller and younger boys. The boys benefit from this programme each year with stronger relationships developing across our age groups. The following classes will work together in these sessions during the year: Prep O and 6W 1G and 6B 2N and 5C 3H and 4K and 4H Prep G and 6L 2W and 5S 3J and 5N

School Banking School Banking (Commonwealth Dollarmite Accounts) continues to operate with Dollarmite account deposits being dropped off at the office each Tuesday morning in the collection box. For those students who don’t yet have a school banking account with the Commonwealth Bank, parents are asked to look online via the CBA website for this information and open accounts online accordingly. The program also offers financial benefits for our school. These include $5 for every account opened. Students also receive various rewards for deposit targets reached. Please encourage your son to open a Dollarmite account and make regular deposits. I certainly wish each boy all the best for an enjoyable term. May he gain much from every opportunity provided at our wonderful school. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School

School Captain’s Start of Year Assembly Speech Good morning Mr Campbell, Mr Sharpe, staff and fellow students, I would like to express my deepest gratitude for this opportunity that I’ve been given, and thank the outgoing Junior School Leaders over the past year for their uplifting and encouraging leadership through the challenges of 2020. In addition, a big congratulations to the other School Leaders. I am already so excited about the year ahead of us. Flipping through 6 years of unforgettable memories, from our first ever Book Week celebration in Prep to getting our own School Laptops in Year 4, from taking care of a class pet, to making outstanding creations such as cargo boats, birdhouses and pencil holders with our faces on the front of them, and from Prep, to Year 5, to today – where I stand as one very proud Toowoomba Grammar School boy. I have truly loved the way all the TGS staff have guided me on a Junior School experience. Seeing them care for me has just been an honour. Thank you, staff. When I started at this school in 2015, I didn’t recognise anyone at first, but when students welcomed me into the Prep classroom, I thought I was going to have a wonderful time here at this magnificent school, and I have! I did have a great time with all my friends there by my side. When you first take a look at the school, you look at all the fabulous resources provided by the school. The Glen McCracken Sports Centre, the Aquatic Centre, the library packed with a diverse variety of books, the Makerspace for Design and Technology and the one and only Art and Woodwork room are just some of the distinctive features of this school. Whatever you do at school, always have a go. Keep pushing, do your best, find your weaknesses, set new goals, if you fail, try, try, and try again and take risks. Be kind and treat others how you want to be treated. Let’s put last year behind us and make this year one to remember! Sammy Srivastava School Captain

Life threatening allergies

We have students with life threatening allergies to various things including nuts, bee stings and ant bites. For the parents of these boys, sending them to school each day is a life-altering experience, trusting the School to manage these circumstances very well and with significant care. Our management includes the following:

• Boys are not to share food with one another at school

• We request that parents do not include nut spreads in sandwiches or products containing nuts in their lunchboxes. This is not a nut ban, but a strategy to reduce risk to students with severe allergies until they are more able to care for themselves.

As some boys can have an anaphylactic reaction via touch transfer or odour, should boys eat nut spreads on toast for breakfast, they are expected to wash their hands before coming to school.

We appreciate the efforts parents make for the safety of these children.

All ensemble rehearsals will commence in Week 2, term 1 (from Monday 1 February) and all ensembles listed below are for boys in Years 4-6, with the exception of Tribe Junior (Years 2-3) and Introductory String Ensemble (Year 3). Page 11: Edition 1 29 January 2021 - Toowoomba Grammar School

Tribe and Tribe Junior Tribe and Tribe Junior are choirs open to all boys who enjoy music and singing. Tribe is for boys in Years 4-6, and Tribe Junior is open to all boys in Years 2 and 3. All boys who enjoy singing are encouraged to attend rehearsals, however, it is important to know that if your son joins an ensemble it is expected he shows commitment and attends all weekly rehearsals. Rehearsals will commence in Week 2 on Monday 1 February. Boys who are interested in joining should simply show up at the Music Room for our first scheduled rehearsal on Monday 1 February and their name will be added to the roll. Please email Mrs Dixon ([email protected]) with any questions regarding Tribe or Tribe Junior.

Introductory Band The Introductory Band will be conducted by Mrs Melissa Buchholz ([email protected]). If your son was involved in Introductory Band last year, I encourage him to continue his involvement (there may be some boys who were in Intro Band last year who may be invited to join Concert Band). Introductory Band focuses on teaching the foundation skills of ensemble playing and is the training ensemble for Concert Band. Boys who have been taking individual lessons on an instrument for at least two terms are welcome to join this ensemble.

Concert Band The Concert Band will be conducted by Mrs Kellie Dixon. This ensemble performs regularly both at school assemblies, academic ceremonies and at local performance opportunities. The Concert Band is designed for more advanced players who are taking individual lessons on their Brass or Woodwind instrument. Boys who take private lessons on Strings, Piano or Percussion are also welcome to discuss joining the Concert Band as percussionists.

This is a small ensemble for flute and clarinet players who have been taking private lessons for a minimum of 12 months. All boys who are participating in the Year 3 String Performance Program are expected to attend weekly rehearsals. Other boys who are at a beginner level may also attend after discussion with Mrs Dixon and Ms Brix.

Page 12: Edition 1 29 January 2021 - Toowoomba Grammar School

Percussion Ensemble Percussion Ensemble will be conducted by Mrs Kellie Dixon. Boys who have piano lessons may like to consider joining, however, this is not a pre-requisite. Boys need to have a good sense of beat and rhythm and be willing to work hard during rehearsals and learn their individual part. Boys who enjoy performing on both tuned and untuned percussion are welcome to discuss joining this ensemble with Mrs Dixon. Percussion Ensemble welcomes new members, however, boys will join on a trial basis to prove they have the skills and ability to perform the repertoire. Junior School Orchestra The Junior School Orchestra program will run through terms 2 and 3 for a 6-8 week period leading up to the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. Further information regarding rehearsals will be sent home to relevant boys during Term 2. Instrumental immersion programs Year 2 Strings All Year 2 boys will be learning a string instrument this year and lessons will take place on Tuesdays. The Year 2 string program will be run by Ms Teresa Brix. A note with more details will be sent home in the coming week. Year 4 Band All boys in Year 4 will learn an instrument from either the woodwind, brass or percussion family this year and lessons will take place on Thursdays. Boys will be given the opportunity to try all instruments across the first four weeks of the term so we can ascertain which instrument your son is best suited to. Parents will be notified of their son’s instrumental allocation after this has been completed and instruments will then be distributed during the following music lesson. The exact date of distribution will be confirmed in a note which will be sent home in the coming weeks. If you have any questions regarding the instrumental immersion programs at the school, please do not hesitate to contact me. Assembly performances Each week at assembly we endeavour to feature 2-3 musical performances. If your son is receiving private instrumental or singing tuition and would like to take advantage of a performance opportunity, please contact me. Supporters Of The Arts (SOTA) meetings All Junior School parents who have a son involved in music ensembles and / or private tuition are invited to attend SOTA (Supporters Of The Arts) meetings this year. One meeting is held each term and this provides the opportunity for like-minded parents to assist and support the music program at Toowoomba Grammar School. The first meeting for the year is on Monday 22 February. The time and venue will be confirmed in the next newsletter. I encourage all interested parents to attend. Kellie Dixon Head of Junior School Music

Student Wellbeing A student’s level of connectedness with and engagement at school, and his emotional wellbeing can significantly impact on academic achievement. Accordingly the core focus of my role as the Student Wellbeing Teacher is our students.

The aim of the Student Wellbeing service is to support students by:

• Being available to students to listen to their concerns and provide guidance where appropriate

• Being available to listen to parents/ guardians and teachers’ concerns about students’ overall wellbeing and provide guidance where appropriate

• Being an advocate for students’ needs with staff and parents

• Being a conduit for accessing other professional services when required

• Support occurs by way of one-on-one sessions or in small groups. Teachers may also be provided with strategies to support boys within the class environment.

The types of issues that may be addressed include:

• bullying and harassment

• peer relationships and conflict resolution

• self-esteem and self confidence

• behaviour management

• stress management

• grief and loss

• anxiety.

Students may be referred by the Head of Junior School, by their class teacher or by the Academic Needs Committee. Students are also able to make an appointment through their class teacher, parents or via email. I am not a qualified counsellor and do not provide counselling. I will inform parents/ guardians when additional support is necessary and suggest the most appropriate services. I am available for anyone in our school community who may require support. Big Thinking Project – Academic Extension This program is targeted towards students who are creative, diverse thinkers; those willing to challenge themselves to achieve unique outcomes. Students are selected to attend the group based upon academic merit, academic diligence and by class teacher recommendations. Students are challenged to think beyond the expected. The boys are encouraged to take time to ponder the possibilities and determine a course of action based upon evidence acquired through research. Boys are encouraged to create products for a real world audience.

It is important to note that inclusion in this program is fluid. Students attend on a semester by semester basis, depending on the focus area being investigated. Students are provided the opportunity to attend BTP for 1 hour per week. They are withdrawn from their regular classroom to attend with other boys from their Year level.
