TYPES OF FOSTER

• Overnight • Full-time • Par-time

• Once you have decided what type of foster you will be; you must make sure you have received a confirmation email from the AC

LDAR WILL PROVIDE-CRATE

• Always crate LDAR foster;–Whenever you are unable to observe– dog could injure self– dog could injure other family pets or younger family

members– this is NOT your dog, Adopter may want to crate

train - and not crating could make this more challenging– Dog could bolt out the door if frightened–When transporting your foster, tether the leash to a

headrest or crate them

LDAR WILL PROVIDE –MARTINGALE COLLAR

Must stop by and see AC to pick it up with your ACDesigned so that dogs cannot back out of themNever Loosen the collar once it’s put on

• Please use the LDAR leash provided• Never use retractable leashes;• Hard to control• Dog or people can get injured easily

LDAR FOLDER

• Every Lucky Dog has their very own folder These folders hold a number of vital information;

• Original Medical Records• Original Rabies Tag-Never Remove from folder• Original Microchip Tag and information• Medical Tracking Sheet• Individualized Contact – once your dog is

adopted

YOU MUST PROVIDE

• Dog Food - First ingredient must be a meat (fish, chicken, beef, etc...)– Any animal supply store, supermarket or target,

Walmart etc.• 2 dog bowls – 1 food, 1 water – don’t want your LDAR foster to share with your

personal dog• don’t know about germs

– any dog supply

OPTIONAL

• Cans of Pumpkin – (plain ol’ Pumpkin NOT Pumpkin Pie) – Regulates your foster dog

• Dog Bed• Dog Toys (be careful can become a source of fights)• Nature’s Miracle or some form of enzyme cleaner

(HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)• Dog Shampoo • Treats

“LIFE AS A FOSTER”HOW DO I REQUEST A FOSTER

• After you have gone through the application process and turned in your foster docs;

• We will provide you with an email of the dogs available for adoptions. There are dogs already in the area and dogs being transported. The email will noted when the dog is arriving.

• Approval always comes from the FC

• You will be added to the LDAR Foster and LDAR ListServs, emails are send out multiple times a week, of dogs available to be fostered.

• There are 2 different email groups• Dogs in DC• Dogs coming up on transport

• Make sure you respond to your top 3 choices• After a short exchange you will receive an email

confirming your dog. You must reply all; this will be a way for you to be introduced to your AC

• Transport - We will let you know, via a confirmation email, the location and the time to pick your dog up that just came from South Carolina.

• A boarding partner – If you are fostering a dog from our area, we will let you know, via a confirmation email, which boarding partner and what time to be there.

• Remember, your dog’s folder won’t be there. We will arrange for you to swing by the main office to pick up your foster folder along with any medication the foster dog is on

FOSTER TO FOSTER HAND OFFS

• If you are a part-time foster• You will receive an email from the FC to

connect you with the other foster parent• It is the foster responsibility to schedule a

location and time to hand the dog off from point A to point B

• Do not send and email to the listserv

GENERAL LDAR FOSTER RULES

• This is your foster dog• Rules are in place to keep the dogs safe

SPECIAL CASES - PUPPIES

• Puppies are from the age of 3 weeks to 6 months old. They don’t have all the vaccinations and therefore are prompt to serious disease

• Your puppy must be crated• Always make sure you bleach the area you will leave

the puppy in• Do not walk your puppy on the street or sidewalks.

Nor take them to any public space where other dogs are such as; dog park, petco/petsmart

ADOPTION EVENTS

• LDAR has adoption events every weekend; listed on the website. Your dog must be able to attend at least one event a week.

• Please email your AC to schedule a part time foster in case you are unable to attend on a particular weekend

ADOPTION EVENTS

• Do not forget your folder – you will be asked to go back home to get it!

• Plan to arrive at 11:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. for weekend events

ADOPTION EVENTS – DON’TS

• Please do not bring your own dog• Retractable leash• High value treats

ONCE AT THE ADOPTION EVENT

• Check in at the foster table• Check in and check out at the table with LDAR signs• A volunteer will hand you your dog bio and put a

bandanna around your dog’s neck• Green bandanna – friendly• Red bandanna – some aggression with other dogs• Keep your dog on a short leash• Always ask the handler, if it is ok to approach with

your dog

ONCE AT THE ADOPTION EVENT HANDLING PUPPIES

• Go straight from a crate to an ex-pen. Hand your folder to your AC

• Do not walk away from your puppy pen• Puppies cannot touch the ground• No holding the puppies – exceptions are for

pre-approved adopter – Must purell hands up to the elbow

IF YOUR FOSTER DOG SEEMS ILL

• Dogs dehydrate easily if you notice your foster dog is not drinking or eating for more than 24 hours or any other signs you see call the AC contact list provided on this website and e-mail LDAR Executive Director and your AC. If you think it is an emergency please call LDAR Executive Director – Do not hesitate

• Your folder also contains the Veterinarian address. You must call the Executive Director first, she will call and schedule the appointment – Please be on time

• Do not purchase any medication, The Executive Director must approve first. LDAR usually has medication

AT THE VETERINARY

• Do not contact our vet-partners yourself• Do not approach LDAR partners and ask them

to give you a discount for your personal pet• Remember– We want to make working with LDAR as easy as

possible for our partners– To give LDAR discounts, our partners must make

money from their regular practice. If you miss appt. or are late- The partners will stop working with us

MONTHLY MEDICATIONHEARTGARD & FRONTLINE

• You will receive your dog’s medication when you pick your dog either when you pick up your foster and the folder at another location apart from the boarding place or the night of the transport arrives

• You must let your AC know when they are about to end and pick the medication up on the day of an adoption event, once you are checking out, if your foster dog was not adopted

MEDICAL TRACKING SHEET

• A medical tracking sheet comes with every lucky dog’s folder

• Track the monthly medications given while in LDAR care

• This is the only way a new adopter, their vet and LDAR to know

IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE AWAY

• If you are going to be away;• Inform the Executive Director and your AC – in a

single email• We can find a temporally foster while you are out of

town• Your foster dog goes to boarding (if there is not

room)• Your foster dog stays at your place with a house sitter• Your foster dog travel with you

LOST LUCKY DOG

• Please email LDAR Executive Director and your AC ASAP

• LDAR will contact a listservs, other rescues, vets and shelters in the area where the dog was lost

• LDAR gets a Find Toto alert out

YOUR DOG FOUND A FOREVER HOME

WHAT NOW?• Usually dogs are not adopted and taken to

their new homes on the day of the event. There is an interview, a home visit (before the dog is there), and an application for the prospective adopter to go through

WHAT NOW?• Your AC will let you know when all the

required process is completed. We will have an adopter coordinator assist you once with the agreement contract with the prospective adopter, helping you understand the steps

• You better than anyone else can provide all the information necessary since you know more about the dog than LDAR does.
