Indonesia issued a red alert af- ter the Sinabung volcano erupted, blanketing the area in thick and acrid black smoke, disaster offi- cials said, although no casualties have yet been reported. “It’s clearly dangerous so we’ve raised the warning to the highest level, or red level,” said Surono, head of the nation’s vol- cano disaster alert centre. “From the crater, it shot smoke and volcanic ash 1,500 metres (5,000 feet) into the sky,” he told AFP. “Initially we thought the ash and smoke were triggered by rain but now we know the driving pres- sure was from magma.” The 2,460-metre (8,100 feet) Sinabung in northern Sumatra has not erupted for more than 400 years but had shown “some vol- canic activity” since Friday, Surono said. “Our team is coordinating with district and provincial officials to monitor the situation,” he added. About 9,300 people have been evacuated from several affected vil- lages to towns — including Berastagi and Kabanjahe — outside a six-kilometre “danger zone”, search and rescue team official Mohammad Agus Wibisono told AFP. “The ash has spread to a distance of 30 kilometres (20 miles) from the volcano. Many of the villagers evacuated were farmers and they said the ash had settled on their vegetable farms,” he said. There were however no flight disruptions, Wibisono said. Disaster Management Agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono told AFP that many residents in four affected villages at the foot of the volcano had fled their homes im- mediately after the eruption. “Many had left their homes even before they were evacuated. They said the volcano was spewing thick black smoke, small stones and sul- phur. They were so scared they de- cided to leave their homes and go to the city,” Kardono said, adding that a rescue team has been sent to survey the area. “The area is blanketed with thick smoke and there’s a strong smell of sulphur,” he added. He said while there were no re- ports yet of any deaths or injuries, “many” had reported breathing dif- ficulties. “We have anticipated that people may have respiratory problems from inhaling dust. So we’ve given them face masks and are preparing to send in medicines for respiratory infections,” he added. Tents and food are also being arranged for the evacuees and “the situation is under control,” Kardono said. Local media reported that a man had died after experiencing breath- ing difficulty while fleeing from his village, but Karo district official Andes Mbaga told AFP he had died from heart failure. “He had a history of heart prob- lems. He was having breathing problems which could have been worsened by the ash and dust float- ing around,” he said. Evacuees from 18 affected vil- lages are “all doing well” and those who complained of breathing prob- lems are receiving medical help, he added. “Many of them have removed their face masks. The volcanic ac- tivity has also reduced significantly. Lava was emitted during the erup- tion but it didn’t flow out. “The experts are still monitoring the volcanic activity so we don’t know when the status will be down- graded,” Mbaga said. Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meet- ing of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activ- ity. It has more active volcanoes than any other country. I.B. Anom revealed that vocational skillwas like fishing. By providing fishhook, community would have enough opportuni-ties to get fish. On that account, to makepeople sefl-contained, they should be given‘fishhook’ not a ‘fish.’ If they were immedi-ately provided with ‘fish’ or material assis-tance, it would not

last permanently. Even, it would result independency and be less encouraging thecommunity to achieve independence. “At thevery least, by providing life skills, commu-nity will be able to bring in revenue, so thatthey could be independent in the long run. Therefore, to minimize the social gap, themost appropriate strategy adopted is by giv-ing education, life skills or vocational skills,”said I.B. DENPASAR — The most appropriate strategy undertaken in the effort to mini-mize social inequalities is to provide life skills education to the people that areeconomically disadvantaged. By mastering vocational skills, communities are ex-pected to create their own jobs or work at companies requiring their capability. Thus, poverty rate can be reduced. It was delivered by the Head of Bali LearningActivity Development Agency (BPKB) I.B. Anom, last Friday (Aug 27).

paid by all parties when they have masteredthe skills. As consequence, they would be moreencouraged to improve themselves. “Kindlygive priority to employ those that have mas-tered life skills,” said I.B. Anom denoting thethird champion of scientific writing competi-tion on green province in relation to the anni-versary of Bali Province in 2010 and the firstchampion of writing scientific papers in theseries of anniversary of Bali Province in 2009.I.B Anom added that the main function andtask of BPKB was conducting research anddevelopment of non-formal education model. The agency was very strategic to conduct stud-ies and create a model of education-related lifeskills. For example, BPKB had made a CD onthe learning of life skills in the field of spatherapy and installation of natural mosaic stoneand other skills. (08)

Bali reaps triumph at national levelin the series of Bali Arts Festival (BAF)XXXII. Such third national winner was Fac-ulty of Communication Dwijendra Universitywith the work of a documentary film entitledSwadharmaning Jero ring Batur or A Voca-tion of Jero at Batur.

The Head of Bali Cultural Services, Dr. I.B.Sedhawa, last Friday (Aug 27,) said suchachievement indicated that Bali had a greatpotential in the field of photography and cin-ematography. Such a potential should keep ondeveloping in the future.

All this time Bali was often taken advan-tage by outsiders as an object of photographyand cinematography. On that account, it is timefor local photographers and film makers toexploit the beautiful and unique objects ownedby Bali to reach achievement in both fields.Evidently, they managed to attain outstandingachievement. Likewise, the art of photogra-phy and documentary film had been very en-thused by the younger generations of Bali. “Wehave accommodated their potentials throughthe annual art extravaganza in Bali Arts Festi-val (BAF) XXXII. Let’s put such agenda inthe next Bali Arts Festival,” he concluded. (08)

VINEYARD HAVEN – Three days before the official endof the US combat mission in Iraq, US President Barack Obamasaid on Saturday Iraq was now a “sovereign” nation free to deter-mine its own destiny.

“On Tuesday, after more thanseven years, the United States ofAmerica will end its combat mis-sion in Iraq and take an importantstep forward in responsibly end-ing the Iraq war,” Obama said inhis weekly radio address.

The president, who is spendinghis last full vacation day Saturdayon the island of Martha’s Vineyard,Massachusetts, is to deliver onTuesday a nationally-televisedOval Office address on Iraq.

“As a candidate for this office,I pledged I would end this war,”he said Saturday. “As president, that is what I am doing. We havebrought home more than 90,000troops since I took office.”

US troop numbers in Iraq fellbelow 50,000 last Tuesday in linewith Obama’s instructions as partof a “responsible drawdown” oftroops, seven years on from the

invasion that ousted Saddam Hussein.American troop levels are now less

than a third of the peak figure of around170,000 during the US military “surge”of 2007, when Iraq was in the midst ofa brutal Shiite-Sunni sectarian war thatcost thousands of lives.

But more than 4,400 US servicemenand women have lost their lives in thiswar since it began in 2003, accordingto an AFP count based on data fromwww.icasualties.org, an independentwebsite.

And violence in the country, whiledown from the worst levels seen at theheight of sectarian strife, continues tothreaten stability in the nation, spook-ing investors, terrorizing religious mi-norities and raising the specter of a re-turn to chaos after the end of US com-bat operations.

Particularly vulnerable are the SunniArab militiamen who sided withAmerican soldiers against Al-Qaeda

but now fear a surge in bloody re-venge attacks against them.

The fighters have alreadybeen targeted in a number of attacks, including three killed Friday nightin northern Iraq.

The US combat mission in Iraqis to officially end on August 31. Theremaining US troops, who will havea support and training mission, arescheduled to leave the country by theend of 2011.

“But the bottom line is this: thewar is ending,” Obama said. “Likeany sovereign, independent nation,Iraq is free to chart its own course. And by the end of next year, all ofour troops will be home.”

The president also used his ad-dress to call on Americans to honorthose who have served in Iraq bysending them messages via such so-cial networking Internet sites asYouTube, Facebook, Flickr or Twit-ter.

A strong critic of the war, Obamahas always drawn a distinction be-tween former Republican presidentGeorge W. Bush’s decision to in-vade Iraq and the daily fights USsoldiers were waging in the coun-

try.Addressing disabled veterans in

Atlanta, Georgia, earlier this month,Obama noted that the Iraq war hadsparked a vigorous debate in thecountry and that there were Ameri-can patriots both in favor of andagainst the war.

But “what this new generation ofveterans must know is this: ournation?s commitment to all whowear its uniform is a sacred trust thatis as old as our republic itself,” thepresident said Saturday. “It is onethat, as president, I consider a moralobligation to uphold.”

“Any time Bush would stirup fear and make a bigspeech, bin Laden would ap-pear threatening people witha story about what he wasgoing to do,” Castro told statemedia during a meeting witha Lithuanian-born writerknown for advancing con-spiracy theories about worlddomination. “Bush neverlacked for bin Laden’s sup-port. He was a subordinate.”

Castro said documentsposted on WikiLeaks.org —a website that recently re-leased thousands of pages ofclassified documents fromthe Afghan war — “effec-tively proved he was a CIAagent.” He did not elaborate.

The comments, publishedin the Communist Party dailyGranma on Friday, were thelatest in a series of provoca-tive statements by the 84-year-old revolutionary, whohas emerged from seclusionto warn that the planet is onthe brink of nuclear war.

Castro even predictedthe global conflict would meancancellation of the final roundsof the World Cup last monthin South Africa. He later apolo-gized for jumping the gun. Lastweek, he began highlightingthe work of Daniel Estulin, who wrote a trilogy of bookshighlighting the BilderbergClub, whose prominent mem-bers meet once a year behindclosed doors.

The secretive nature of themeetings and prominence ofsome members — includingformer U.S. Secretary of StateHenry Kissinger, senior U.S.and European officials, andmajor international businessand media executives — haveled some to speculate that itoperates as a kind of globalgovernment, controlling notonly international politics andeconomics, but even culture.

During the meeting, Estulintold Castro that the real voiceof bin Laden was last heard inlate 2001, not long after theSept. 11 attacks. He said theperson heard making warningsabout terror attacks after thatwas a “bad actor.”

Castro stepped down due toill health in 2006 — first tem-porarily, then permanently —and handed power over to hisyounger brother Raul. He hasremained head of the CubanCommunist party but stayedout of view for four years after

falling sick before returning to the spotlight inJuly.

Castro did take exception with one ofEstulin’s major theses: that the human race mustmove to another habitable planet or face extinc-tion.

Castro said it would be better to fix thingson Earth then abandon the planet altogether.

“Humanity ought to take care of itself if itwants to live thousands more years,” Castro toldthe writer.

CHANGCHUN, China – NorthKorean leader Kim Jong Il apparentlytoured several Chinese border citiesSunday while on a secretive trip re-portedly aimed at drumming up sup-port for a succession plan involvinghis youngest son.

Reporters have followed a motor-cade — apparently used by the re-clusive Kim — around several cit-ies in northeast China. The 35-ve-hicle convoy accompanied by policecars with flashing lights was seenheaded to the train station inChangchun on Saturday.

In a photograph carried by Japan’sKyodo News agency, a man in a khakijumpsuit with thinning hair believedto be Kim is seen shaking hands atthe train station with a man it identi-fied as a senior Chinese official. Thetwo men are standing on a red carpetand are surrounded by many officials.

Kim rarely leaves North Korea andwhen he does he travels by specialtrain. South Korea’s Yonhap newsagency reported Sunday that Kim wasbelieved to have traveled to Yanbian,a Korean autonomous prefecture inthe far northeastern Chinese provinceof Jilin bordering North Korea, afterleaving Changchun.

Kim is believed to have touredthe cities of Yanji, Tumen andHunchun in Yanbian, Yonhap re-ported, citing an unidentified sourcein Beijing. It said Kim would likelyreturn home later Sunday. Kim’svisit to the cities may be related toChina’s plans to develop its north-eastern regions, Yonhap speculated. It said China wants to continue us-ing North Korea’s port of Rajin andhopes to obtain permission to useother ports as well.

North Korea does not announce

NKorean leader Kim toursChinese border cities

Kim’s trips until after he returnshome, and China has refused to sayif he is in the country, even though aJapanese television station had agrainy picture of him.

Kim was reportedly accompaniedby his son, Kim Jong Un, believed tobe in his 20s. Many North Koreawatchers predict the son will be ap-pointed to a key party position at aruling Workers’ Party meeting earlynext month — the first such gather-ing in decades.

To pull off the event with sufficientfanfare, North Korea will need Chi-nese aid, particularly following thedevastating floods that battered thecountry’s northwest this month, ana-lysts said.

South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo news-paper and Yonhap both reported thatKim was believed to have met Chi-nese President Hu Jintao inChangchun on Friday. The Dong-aIlbo newspaper said the two are be-lieved to have discussed the North’ssuccession, the resumption of six-na-tion talks on North Korea’s nuclearprogram, and ways to strengthen bi-lateral economic cooperation.

Kim also badly needs Chinese aidbecause of flooding earlier thismonth that damaged or destroyedmore than 7,000 homes, and inun-dated 17,800 acres (7,200 hectares)of farmland close to the border withChina, the North’s official KoreanCentral News Agency reported thisweek.

KCNA said China has alreadyagreed to deliver some aid to helpNorth Korea cope with the disasterbut didn’t give specifics. The Northfaces chronic food shortages and hasrelied on outside aid to feed much ofits 24 million people since a faminethat is believed to have killed as manyas 2 million people in the 1990s.

Government called on to repairdamaged roads for Idul Fitri travelers

AntaraJAKARTA - A legislator has

called on the government to repairdamaged roads in order to providetravelers with good transportationservices in the runup to the post-fast-ing month festivities.

“A lot of road sections in differ-ent parts of the country while thenumber of Idul Fitri travelers usingpublic transportation this year is ex-pected to increase by 6.35 percent toabout 15.5 million,” Abdul Hakim ofthe House of Representatives(DPR)’s Commission V for transpor-tation affairs, said here over theweekend.

He predicted that the traffic flowof this year’s Idul Fitri travelers couldnot be well organized because mostof road sections were damaged.

“This is because the number ofthis year’s travelers for land transpor-tation alone is expected to reach 15.5million, or an increase of 6.35 per-cent from that in 2009,” he added.

Bad road infrastructures have

caused frequent traffic accidents. So, Hakim called on the Ministryof Public Works to repair soon dam-aged roads so that travelers wouldbe provided relatively better ser-vices.

He said that road infrastructuresin Java, Sumatra and Sulawesi atpresent are in bad conditions. Thedamages happened to national, pro-vincial and district roads. In a num-ber of damaged sections, repair isbeing done but still it is hamperedwith bad weather. The same is alsotrue to the train services which areexpected to experience slight dis-turbance.

The railways near Lapindo inEast Java could experience floodswhen rain falls due to disturbanceof mudflow.

He said that there was no reasonfor the central and regional govern-ments not to repair damaged roads. This matter has been stipulated inLaw No. 22 / 2009 on Traffic andTransportation.

Indonesian crewmen protest Australian detentionAgence France-Presse

SYDNEY - A group of Indonesian crewmenSunday protested against their detention in Australia, setting mattresses and paper on fire and climbing ontothe roof of their compound, an official said.

The incident began at the Darwin ImmigrationDetention Centre in northern Australia at 4:00 am (1800GMT Saturday) when two men climbed a tree and re-fused to come down.

Others among the 97 Indonesian crewmen inthe compound then joined in, setting mattresses alightand chanting and yelling, prompting officials to call inpolice and fire officers, a department of immigrationspokesman said.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation re-ported that about a dozen of the men, wearing masks,face-paint and hoods and carrying long poles, had latertaken to the roof of their building and were trying to

stop anyone climbing up to join them. “The protest has now concluded and order is

being restored to the affected compound housing Indo-nesian crewman,” the immigration spokesman told AFP.

“Their reasons are their own but obviously theywere airing grievances about being detained generally.”

The immigration department said there were 97Indonesian crew detained in the compound and a “sig-nificant proportion” of them were involved in some wayin the protest.

No asylum seekers were involved in the inci-dent which was limited to Indonesian crewmen likely toface people smuggling charges, who would have arrivedin Australia with boats carrying the would-be refugees.

Australia has a policy of mandatory detentionfor boatpeople and generally processes asylum seekersat Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean but increasednumbers of arrivals have recently forced the reopeningof centres on the mainland.

”In Memoriam” Jero Dalang Diah

From Nagasepaha, Left Legacy for Nation

Bali Post/Ole

Jero Dalang Diah

Jero Dalang Diah died in silence, silence of the early morning and si-lence of Nagasepaha Village on Sun-day (22/8) at 3 am wita. Not all know, the mastermind left without materialwealth to be given to the children and

grandchildren. It was more thanwealth, the Dalang actually left thespirit of creativity also a culture as-set, not only to the children or theBuleleng Government and Bali, butfor the nation and the world.

In the arts national friendship,Jero Dalang Diah who’s real nameis Ketut Negara is very popular.Even the life he went through in thesilence beautiful farmer village inthe east of Singaraja City, more thanten years his ears weren’t function-ing anymore, so the silence inte-grated with him. Moreover it wascompleted with the government nottaking him seriously for what he’sdone for the Indonesian art devel-opment. Luckily some artists and artgoers of Indonesian arts come to hishouse so the spirit did not go away.

Jero Dalang Diah was firstlyknown as a mastermind/puppeteer,painting wayang over paper, mak-ing wayang from animal skins, bademaker and other art stuffs. Althoughat his younger years around 1927,unintentionally he added somethingnew to the Indonesian arts. At thetime, he met some Japanese paint-ing ladies over a glass which drewhim to curiosity as it doesn’t lookbad at all.

So from there the wayang paint-ing on glass in Nagasepaha started. He never learnt it from the Japanesedirectly; he only asked one paintingto be studied by himself. The paint-ing was then broken down and stud-ied seriously to find out how a painter

put a colour over a glass then layeredit again and again so it looked goodfrom the other side. From therehe started his style, wayang, and it wasmuch more complicated than the la-dies pattern.

What he did was a finding eventhough it was known way before inother parts of Indonesia and theworld. Not yet for wayang, he wasthe starter. Until now it is still beingdone by Nagasepaha Village and itssurrounds even lately those ones thatwere developed are being exhibitedin some big cities including Jakarta.

Hardiman, Ganesha EducationUniversity (Undiksha) Fine Art Lec-turer also international art curatormentioned this kind of art is also oneof the Nation arts which its existenceignored due to the modern arts. It isone of the very few kinds of glasspainting that are still alive in Indone-sia. Besides Nagasepaha it’s also inCirebon, Yogyakarta, Solo andMadura, “Nagasepaha painting art isdefinitely an Indonesian culture as-set. It’s not only Buleleng’s, it is alsothe nation’s.”

And so, as Jero Dalang Diah left, this kind of painting should get thesame appreciation as other kind ofpaintings there are so it goes on for-ever. Especially this kind of paintingwon’t stop to only develop its aestheticquality yet also produces holy storiesmeanings, marginalise art classes, dominate power and more, “To con-clude, behind the transparency of theglass painting, it mirrors our real face.”

HistoryIts development now is significant

so its history should be written andlived forever.

Hardiman noted, its style can bedivided to three periods of styles.First, Beginning Period (1927-1950s)with aesthetic prioritised the wayangaction over an empty background, nosetting or time set in this period. Itlooks like a concept of wayang per-formance.

Second, Landscape Setting Period(1950s-1992). Set on a foreground orbackground built by nature landscapepainting nearing naturalistic painting. This period was influenced by beingordered with settings such asJelekong (West Java) orSukaraja(Middle Java). AMLAPURA — KarangasemRegency through the IndonesiaHotel and Restaurant Association(PHRI) of Karangasem Chapterjust held a seminar discussing thespiritual tourism developmentplan at Candidasa, last Friday(Aug 27). Meanwhile, a tourismpractitioner, Bagus Sudibia, inthe seminar attended until the endby the Regent of Karangasem IWayan Geredeg said that Ubudhad initiated it since 20 yearsago.

So, according to the BagusSudibia, spiritual tourism actu-ally was nothing new. Therefore,if Karangasem would indeed se-riously develop the alternative at-traction or new tourist attractionproduct, it had to be managedprofessionally and by promotingits distinctiveness. “Karangasemis indeed adequately potential todevelop spiritual tourism. So theuniqueness and professionalismshould be shown off,” he said.

Aside from Bagus Sudibia asChairman of the PHRI Bali, theseminar also presented somespeakers of religious figures suchas Prof. Made Titib, Prof. IBGunada and spiritual motivatorGede Prama. Titib said that spiri-tual journey called tirthayatra ornow developed into a spiritualtourism had been undertaken bystrangers to Bali since ancientt imes. History said thatMaharishi Markandeya from In-dia even buried panca datu (five

Spiritual tourism developmentof Karangasem lagged 20 years

metal foundations) at Besakih. Now many spiritual leaders of theworld were even more familiarwith famous temples in Bali. Moreover, those spiritualists hadcome to Bali for several times.Friends of Made Titib, for in-stance, had been to AndakasaTemple for 30 times, while an-other friend said to have come toBesakih Temple for 15 times. They were delighted and evenmore delighted to be in Bali be-cause they felt always peaceful.

According to Titib, it would be-come a challenge of its own forKarangasem Regency to developspiritual tourism, especially howto make people smart and insight-ful in spiritual tourism. After all,Bali had always been known anduntil now remained to be visitedby tens of thousands of foreigntourists because Bali had beenknown as the island of the gods, paradise island or the last paradisein the world or the island of thou-sand temples. So, this title shouldbe maintained in the real life ofsociety.

So far, Titib was often embar-rassed by his fellow spiritualistsfrom various countries. When go-ing down from great temples, hefrequently saw young childrengetting drunk due to alcohol onthe sidewalk and at villages. “Iwas shocked when knowing a vil-lage competition was won by vil-lage having many cafes. Ideally,it should be assessed in terms ofpeaceful atmosphere, non-exist-ence of gambling, cockfight or

café activities. It is such a custom-ary village that is worthy of beinga champion in the village compe-tition,” observed Titib.

Titib also regretted that duringthe Galungan holiday bazaar cus-tomary villages often did not em-power the potential of local youthclub. Instead, they took advantageof café girls as waitress to attractmore visitors, so they could in-crease the sales of liquor. “I hopethat public officials in Bali couldmake a policy in order to main-tain the indigenous wisdom, localculture and religion in Bali,” heasserted.

Meanwhile, Gunada said thattourism and religion or spiritual-ity constituted two paradoxical en-tities or nearly lay in oppositeends. Tourism was identical to theactivity of seeking for worldly andglamorous pleasures. Conversely, spirituality tended to put moreemphasis on the self-control to-ward quality of spiritualistic life.It was not easy to integrate bothentities into spiritual tourism. Itrequired prudence. The problemwas that if it worked, of course itwould have positive impact on therevenue and possibly would give anincrease in social welfare of Ba-linese people materially. On thecontrary, if it deviated while gov-ernment was unable to uphold theinitial ideals of the spiritual tourismdevelopment, it was worried thatcustoms, culture and religion woulddegrade. “So it requires a concept, ideas as well as good preparation todo so,” he asserted. Prime Minister Naoto Kan has instructedEconomy, Trade and Industry MinisterMasayuki Naoshima to compile “a programmeto promote domestic investment” by October.

Kan plans to incorporate part of the blue-print into a fresh stimulus he will outline onTuesday, the Yomiuri Shimbun and other me-dia reported.

“In order to fix the economy, the first to dois (create) jobs, the second to do is jobs,” Kantold reporters Saturday, the Yomiuri said.

The main feature of the plan would be mea-sures to promote domestic investment fromsome 200 trillion yen (2.36 trillion dollars) ofcash and deposits kept by Japanese companies, the reports said.

Kan renewed pressure on the central bankto take additional monetary easing measures, reportedly saying: “I’d like to see the Bank ofJapan governor as soon as he returns (from a

“Sino-Japanese economic and trade tieshave withstood the serious test brought on bythe global financial crisis and a positive trendfor development has emerged,” Wen said, ac-cording to a news release by his cabinet.

“Both sides must grasp the current andtimely opportunity of the improvement in bi-lateral relations... to create a new phase in bi-lateral economic and trade cooperation.”

The two countries should further focus onthe “green economy”, Wen said, including re-cycling and environmental protection.

“China and Japan have common interestsin pushing forward regional cooperation, ad-vancing the reform of the global economy andopposing trade protectionism,” Wen said.

SINGAPORE - Singapore’s massivebet on two casino resorts is already pay-ing off after the number of arrivals in asingle month crossed the one millionmark for the first time in July, analystssaid.

Six months after opening its first ca-sino in February, followed by the secondin April, Singapore is already countingits winnings despite lingering concernabout gambling-linked social problemsamong the local population.

“Let there be no mistake about it, thelegalisation of casino gaming inSingapore was always intended to be apart of an enhanced tourism strategy forthe country,” said Jonathan Galaviz, aLas Vegas-based expert on Asian gam-ing.

“The development of multi-billiondollar integrated resorts in Singapore isclearly paying off for the country, andthey will continue to do so for at leastthe next decade,” said the managing di-rector of Galaviz & Company.

DBS Group, Southeast Asia’s biggestbank, said the casino resorts are expectedto contribute about 1.5 billion US dol-lars to the economy this year.

Church and civic groups had opposedthe legalisation of casinos but the gov-ernment went ahead in 2005 and allowedUS-based Las Vegas Sands andMalaysia’s Genting group to build twocomplexes at a combined cost of 10 bil-lion dollars.

As a safeguard, the casinos were toldto charge an entry fee equivalent to 74dollars from Singaporean citizens andpermanent residents, and a campaignagainst “problem gambling” waslaunched by the government.

Singapore’s tourism board said the city-state, which has a population of just fivemillion, welcomed one million visitors inJuly, thanks in large part to the pull of itsnew man-made tourist attractions.

Tourism officials hope to see between11.5 million and 12.5 million visitors thisyear — a figure well above the numbersvisiting neighbouring countries blessedwith white-sand beaches, towering moun-tains and other natural wonders.

As well as the casinos, Singapore’s eu-phemistically named “integrated resorts”also offer theme parks, high-end shopping,

latest of China’s trading partners to complainabout the nation’s business environment.

Japanese firms have borne the brunt of re-curring labour disputes at foreign-establishedfactories in China this year, and officials saidOkada pressed Beijing for more “transparent”labour policies, without elaborating.

“More and more Japanese companies aredeveloping cooperation with the Chineseside,” the Chinese press release quoted Okadaas saying.

“They are not only using China as a pro-duction base, but are viewing China as an im-portant market. The two sides are increasinglysharing the same fate.”

On Saturday, Okada told journalists that heurged China to improve the business environ-ment here.

The reports came as Kan said Friday hewould outline measures to counter the effectsof the yen’s strength this week, implying pos-sible intervention by saying he would take “de-termined steps when necessary”.

The measures could include subsidies forbuying environmentally friendly goods, job cre-ation programmes, financial aid to small andmid-sized companies and public spending oninfrastructure such as hospitals, a senior offi-cial of Kan’s Democratic Party of Japan hassaid.

The yen this week hit 15-year highs againstthe dollar, threatening exporters as it erodes re-patriated profits, inflicting damage on Japan’skey growth driver.

Roughly 40 percent of Japanese firms saythey would move factories overseas if the yenstays at its current high of around 85 to thedollar, according to an official survey releasedFriday.

Earlier reports Saturday said the BOJ willlikely hold an emergency policy meetingearly this week to discuss additional mon-etary easing.

hotels and convention halls.Analysts say Singapore understood the

importance of casinos in a broader context— not just as a means to lure the high-roll-ers but as part of a strategy to stay competi-tive as a travel destination and a “globalcity”.

Founding father Lee Kuan Yew said thegovernment had been “against casinos fordecades” and “refused offers of seedy casi-nos from Macau.”

But officials changed their position af-ter seeing how the casino industry devel-oped in Las Vegas, which offers Broadwayhits and fine-dining restaurants featuringsome of the world’s famous chefs.

The 4.4 billion dollar Resorts WorldSentosa, built by Malaysia’s GentingGroup, opened in February. It boasts South-east Asia’s only Universal Studios themepark, among other attractions.

The 5.5 billion dollar Marina Bay Sands, owned by Las Vegas Sands, started opera-tions in April.

Revenue figures from the two Singaporecasinos paint an upbeat picture.

Resorts World Sentosa said it generatedrevenues of 636.5 million dollars in thethree months to June. Net profit came in atalmost 300 million dollars for the quarter.

The Universal Studios theme park hasattracted about 8,000 visitors a day andhotel occupancy rates are an estimated 70percent.

Marina Bay Sands declared net revenuesof 216 million dollars in just its first 65 daysof operation, with the casino accounting for191 million dollars.

Las Vegas Sands chief executive SheldonAdelson said he was “gratified by the over-whelming reception the property has re-ceived”.

Galaviz, the gaming consultant, saidSingapore’s total gross gaming revenueshould reach 2.7 billion dollars this year, rising to 3.0 billion dollars in 2011.

But he said this is unlikely to reach thelevels in Las Vegas and Macau “ifSingapore’s market just remains at two ca-sinos at their current size”.

Macau took in 14.5 billion dollars fromgamblers in 2009, while casinos at the LasVegas strip earned about 5.5 billion dollars.

Aaron Fischer, head of Asia consumergaming at CLSA, estimates Singapore gam-ing revenues will rise to 5.1 billion dollarsin 2011 and 6.5 billion dollars in 2012 from3.0 billion dollars this year.

MUMBAI - Bollywood is tack-ling the subject of sexual harassmentin the workplace, which campaign-ers say is increasingly becoming anissue as traditional gender roleschange in modern urban India.

“Hello Darling”, which was re-leased on Friday, is inspired by the1980 Hollywood comedy “Nine ToFive” in which Jane Fonda, LilyTomlin and Dolly Parton seek to geteven with their arrogant and sexistmale boss.

Bollywood takes on sexual harassment in new filmstory extravaganzas — stars EeshaKoppikhar, Celina Jaitley, GulPanaag and Jaaved Jaffrey.

“‘Hello Darling’ gives a very se-rious message to society,” saidKoppikhar. “There are some men inthe corporate world who are alwayson the lookout to flirt with women.

“The film speaks about such menand how women have to be carefuland deal with them.”

Sexual harassment — or “Eveteasing” as it is called in India — isa growing problem, as more womenleave the home to go out to work, said Sudha Sundaraman, generalsecretary of the All India Demo-

cratic Women’s Association. But she said unwanted sexual

comments, contact or advanceswere not just confined to tradition-ally male-dominated offices. Theyalso happened in the “unorganisedsector”, where many women dojobs such as low-paid domesticwork.

And women working often un-sociable hours in so-called “sun-rise” sectors such as call centres orthe IT industry were vulnerable tosexual harassment or exploitation, she added.

“Attitudes are still very patriar-chal,” she told AFP.

ROME - Two American tourists, kitted out in glinting helmets andhandsome tunics, grapple with eachother, swords clanging, as if their verylives depend on it.

“We thought we would take abreak from cultural touring and walk-ing around,” said Chris Coffman, 43,visiting from Pennsylvania with hisfamily and some friends, adding thatthey learned about the course on theInternet.

Just a stone’s throw from the Col-osseum, on the ancient Appian Wayleading from the Eternal City toBrindisi, they boarded the time ma-chine of the Rome Historical Group(GSR, www.gsr-roma.com/english/gladiatori/htm/scuola.html) andwhiled away an entire afternoon in theRome of 2,000 years ago.

“What we are doing here is experi-mental archaeology,” said their in-structor, who goes by the artistic nameof Hermes, between two especiallystrenuous exercises. “The teachingconsists of experiencing all the sen-sations of a Roman of the time.”

Like the 140 other members of theassociation of history buffs, Hermes— who sells real estate during theweek — became a gladiator trainerbecause of his “passion for Rome. Be-ing Roman doesn’t just mean livingin Rome but making ‘Rome’ live,” hesaid.

The course can cost up to 100 eu-ros (120 dollars) per person for twohours, but slides down to 25 euros forgroups of at least 10.

The 2000 Hollywood film “Gladi-

“I did see ‘Gladiator’,” admittedCoffman, adding that he thought theweapons seemed “a little heavier” thanthey appeared in the film.

Hermes, himself clad in a tunic, puts seven would-be gladiatorsthrough the paces in the sand, kickingup clouds of dust.

After this warm-up, the students getinto hand-to-hand combat, startingwith wooden swords before graduat-ing to the metal ones, under Hermes’watchful eye.

“I’m always nearby to make surethey don’t hurt themselves,” Hermessaid.

Even children can be Spartacus fora day.

Filippo, 11, from Prato in Tuscany, dragged his father to the course.

“When I was really little I playedwith little toy soldiers. Now I loveplaying Roman battles on the com-puter,” Filippo said.

“Here I’ve learned that a‘provokator’ is a gladiator who pro-vokes the adversary, but my favouriteis the ‘sekutor’: the professional gladi-ator who always wins.”

The American team stormed over the 13-kilometre course in the floodlight streets ofSeville in 14 minutes and 06 seconds, in arace that broke new ground by beginning at10pm (2000 GMT).

It was 10 seconds ahead of the Liquigasteam that includes Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali, one of the favorites for this year’s title.

Danish outfit Saxo Bank, which starsLuxembourg’s Andy and Frank Schleck andSwitzerland’s Fabian Cancellara, was third,12 seconds behind the winners.

Fourth was Italy’s Lampre and fifth theUS team Garmin.

Cavendish, making his Tour of Spain de-but, takes the leader’s jersey, which this yearis red rather than the traditional gold. Join-ing him on the podium were the Slovak twinsPeter and Martin Velits.

The 25-year-old Isle of Man rider alreadyhas a remarkable string of stage wins in ma-jor Tours that includes 15 victories in theTour of France over the past three years.

He will have another chance to show offhis skills in Sunday’s second stage, whichcovers a relatively flat 173.7-kilometrecourse from Alcala de Guadaira to Marbellaand which should favour a group finish.

But the course overall, which includes sixsummit finishes in eight mountain stages, isexpected to favour the climbers.

Many believe the event could be won orlost on the penultimate stage, a 168.8-

Beckham was said to be aghastwhen Capello announced in a televisedinterview ahead of a friendly fixtureagainst Hungary earlier this month thatthe England legend would no longer beconsidered for selection because he istoo old.

The news came as Beckham wasrecovering from an Achilles injury thathad ruled him out of thee World Cupand despite constant assertions fromthe LA Galaxy star that he has no in-tention of retiring from internationalfootball.

Capello later claimed Beckham, who has 115 caps for England and isjust 10 short of record holder PeterShilton, would be allowed one lastfarewell appearance in a friendly atWembley to say goodbye.

But after the Italian received intensecriticism for the way he handled theannouncement, being accused ofshowing a lack of respect forBeckham, he has finally opted to makecontact with the former ManchesterUnited and Real Madrid star.

Capello said: “I spoke honestlywith a journalist in the TV interview. The question was ‘what do you thinkabout David’. What was I meant to do?

NEW YORK – The line judge who called afoot fault on Serena Williams that sent the starinto a tirade during last year’s U.S. Open semi-finals will be officiating at this year’s tourna-ment.

In a statement issued to The Associated Presson Saturday, tournament organizers said ShinoTsurubuchi “is a world class official and we areconfident in her abilities.”

The statement continued: “Consistent withU.S. Open officiating assignments, Ms.Tsurubuchi will officiate in both men’s andwomen’s matches, and will rotate through thevarious on-court officiating positions.”

Williams, who leads active women with 13Grand Slam singles titles, withdrew last weekfrom this year’s U.S. Open, which begins Mon-day. She said she is not completely recoveredfrom July 15 surgery to repair cuts on her rightfoot.

Tsurubuchi was working the baseline late inthe 2009 U.S. Open semifinal between then-de-fending champion Williams and Kim Clijsters.Tsurubuchi called a foot fault on a second serveby Williams, resulting in a double-fault thatmoved Clijsters one point from victory.

The ruling prompted a profanity-laced, racket-brandishing, finger-pointing tirade by Williams, who approached Tsurubuchi with what tourna-ment director Jim Curley called at the time “athreatening manner.”

Williams earlier had been give a code viola-tion warning when she broke her racket afterlosing the first set. So the chair umpire awardeda penalty point to Clijsters because of Williams’outburst — and, because it happened to comeon match point, that ended the semifinal withClijsters ahead 6-4, 7-5. LONDON – David Beckham has received a personal phone call from England manager FabioCapello to explain why he controversially ended the midfielder’s international career withouttelling him first.

Say ‘wait, I have to stop and phoneBeckham’?

“But immediately after the inter-view Franco Baldini spoke with Davidto tell him what had happened.

“Since then I spoke directly withDavid on the telephone and I explainedwhat really happened - and the rela-tionship is really good.

“I spoke with David because he waspart of the staff at the World Cup. I usu-ally don’t speak on the phone with theplayers, in my career I never did this.”

Capello appeared uncomfortablewhen repeatedly asked if Beckhamwould ever play for England again, perhaps aware that an unequivocalno would cause him yet more badpublicity.

But he made it clear that while thedoor is not completely closed on theLA Galaxy man, he is no longer inEngland’s immediate plans.

Capello said: “First, he has to beback to play. We are monitoring all theplayers but I think the future is for theyoung players - because we have tothink about the Euros.

“For all the players, the door is openalways. But now I think about theyoung players. They need to play more

games, get more experience.“Some players it will be difficult to

choose another time because of theirage. I have to prepare the youth. In2012 Beckham will be 36.”

It was always going to be a diffi-cult road back to the England team forBeckham, no matter how Capello’sside performed in South Africa.

He had maintained his place in thesquad only by leaving Los Angeles toplay on loan with AC Milan in Serie Afor the last two seasons - and at presentthere is no sign of a return to Europe.

Beckham always knew that if hestayed in America, where his familyare said to be settled and happy, hisinternational career would inevitablybe curtailed and it now appears un-likely he will achieve his dream of be-coming England’s most-cappedplayer. Capello did hint at a possiblefuture in coaching for Beckham, eventhough the player has always insistedthat becoming a manager does not in-terest him.

The Italian said: “He has big expe-rience. He knows different styles, heknows Spanish, Italian, English. Prob-ably he knows a lot of different thingsso I think he can do it.”

LONDON – Carlo Ancelottiadmitted Frank Lampard’s herniainjury had taken the shine offChelsea’s perfect start to their de-fence of the Premier League title.

Ancelotti’s side recorded athird successive victory on Satur-day as a first half goal fromFlorent Malouda and DidierDrogba’s 77th minute penalty se-cured a 2-0 success against Stokeat Stamford Bridge.

The champions go into the in-ternational break on top of thetable after scoring 14 goals andconceding none in their openingthree games of the season.

But Ancelotti couldn’t be com-pletely satisfied as he waits ner-vously to discover if Englandmidfielder Lampard has a suc-cessful hernia operation nextweek.

Lampard will miss Englandopening Euro 2012 qualifyinggames against Bulgaria and Swit-zerland after aggravating theproblem on Saturday.

He was substituted with 18minutes remaining, having earlierfailed to convert a 10th-minutepenalty.

“He has a problem with a her-nia,” Ancelotti said. “He had sur-gery on it 10 years ago and thisweek wasn’t very good.

“And in the game he didn’t feelvery good again so I think thisweek the only solution is to have

The Texas Department of Licens-ing and Regulation received an ap-plication from Margarito on Mon-day and decided Thursday to granthis request. The decision came af-ter Margarito was denied an appli-cation to fight in California and hadanother application tabled in Ne-vada.

Margarito is expected to facePacquiao for a vacant junior middle-weight title on Nov. 13.

“I want to thank the state of Texasfor granting me a boxing license, which enables me to continue mypassion for the sport of boxing inthe United States,” Margaritosaid in a statement sent to The As-sociated Press. “I have dedicated mylife to giving the fans of the sportentertainment and excitement. OnNov. 13, this great opportunity willultimately be fulfilled.”

Margarito hasn’t fought in theUnited States since January 2009,when a plaster-like substance wasfound in his hand wraps before afight against Shane Mosley in LosAngeles. Margarito’s license alongwith that of his former trainer, JavierCapetillo, were revoked for at leastone year by the California State Ath-letic Commission, a decision thatwas upheld by other states.

The “Tijuana Tornado” honoredthe revocation, even though he de-nied knowing anything about the il-legal hand wraps. He could havefought outside the U.S. during hisyearlong suspension, but didn’t re-turn to the ring until May 8, about16 months after his fight againstMosley.

Moving up to junior middle-weight, Margarito coasted to a winover Roberto Garcia in Mexico.

It was never a sure thing thatMargarito would be licensed inTexas, and promoter Top Rank haddiscussed contingency plans that in-cluded taking the fight to Mexicoor Dubai.

Officials in Texas examined nu-merous documents relating to thecase, including the initial revocationof Margarito’s license in California, transcripts from his hearing, his sub-sequent application from earlier thismonth, and a letter from the Asso-ciation of Boxing Commissions tomembers instructing them to make

their own decision on whether to is-sue him a license.

“After a thorough review of hisapplication it was determined Mr.Margarito met the requirements ofthe Texas Combative Sports Act andRules,” Executive Director WilliamKuntz said in a statement posted onthe department’s website. “Based onthe review of the above information,I have authorized the issuance of alicense to Mr. Margarito.”

The decision was important notonly to those involved in the fight, but also to Dallas Cowboys ownerJerry Jones, his year-old stadium andthe state of Texas.

Any fight involving Pacquiaomeans big business for the host, in-cluding massive crowds and hun-dreds of thousands of pay-per-viewpurchases. Pacquiao drew 51,000fans to Cowboys Stadium in March, despite facing the relatively un-known Joshua Clottey.

Jones said he’s already been intouch with Top Rank and, althoughthere are still some details to workout, most of the major points in-volved in the fight have been agreedupon.

“We have a few things to workout, then we’ll have an announce-ment — soon, certainly withindays,” Jones told the AP. “It wasworth the wait. I’m pleased thatwe’re in the position we are.”

Fans had been hoping to seePacquiao face Floyd Mayweather Jr.this fall in what could have been therichest fight in the sport’s history. However, Mayweather has refusedto a sign a contract to face the popu-lar Filipino champion and Pacquiaowas forced to look elsewhere for afight, finally settling on Margarito— both fighters are promoted by TopRank.

The choice has drawn the ire ofmany fans who don’t believe thatMargarito should not receive the lu-crative payday after what has tran-spired over the past 18 months. Still,Margarito remains wildly popular inMexico and the matchup shouldoutdraw the last crowd at CowboysStadium.

“This is a good one because weknow Margarito — with our fanbase, in our area — if we do the fight, then it’ll be a big draw,” Jones said.

another operation.“I think he will have this done

on Tuesday or Wednesday. He isnot able to play for the interna-tional team.

“He will be out for one or twoweeks. We had the same experi-ence with Didier Drogba, he hadthe same surgery and in one weekhe was able to train. It’s not a bigproblem, it’s very easy surgery. But he started to feel pain and heneeds to do this.”

Ancelotti could at least affordto smile at Chelsea’s win despitehis side’s failure to scale theheights they reached in successive6-0 victories over Wigan and WestBrom.

“It wasn’t our best performancebut it was an important result. There was a lot of difficulty in thegame,” Ancelotti said.

“We didn’t have a high tempoin the game. I am happy becausewe won, we didn’t concede a goal,we kept a clean sheet we main-tained our position at the top ofthe table.”

Meanwhile, Stoke managerTony Pulis meanwhile launchedan angry attack on Arsene Wengerover the Arsenal manager’s com-ments regarding Stoke defenderRyan Shawcross this week.

Wenger criticised Shawcross’schallenge on Tottenham keeperHeurleho Gomes last weekend, citing it as evidence of “rugby tac-tics” employed by some teams atset-pieces.

The referee for that game wasChris Foy, the same official whotook charge of Arsenal’s win atBlackburn on Saturday, and Pulisbelieves the comments were an at-tempt to influence the referee.

“The club is desperately disap-pointed with the commentsWenger made,” Pulis said.

“Especially the comments hemade about Shawcross, they werecompletely out of order and youdon’t expect a person like Wengerto say that. But the club will dealit in the right matter.

“The club has sent a letter toArsenal and I think there’s been aletter to the FA, the PremierLeague and also to the managers’association.

“What he said about Ryan wasvery, very poor and the club willtake that matter forward.”

Pulis also criticised the agentsencouraging Asmir Begovic topress for a move away from Stokeafter Chelsea bid for the keeper.

Begovic was back in the Stokesquad after refusing to play in amidweek League Cup game.

And Pulis added: “The problemwith that is 90 percent of that hasbeen stirred up by faceless peoplebehind the scenes. It goes on andI know that.

“I’m not naive to say it doesn’t.And obviously the fact he saidwhat he did was disappointing. But we’ll do our absolutedamnedest to keep Begovic atStoke City.”

LIVERPOOL – Liverpool haveacted quickly to fill the void left bythe departure of Javier Mascheranoand Alberto Aquilani, announcingon Sunday the capture of Porto’sRaul Meireles.

The 27-year-old midfielder hasjoined Roy Hodgson’s side on a 14million euro, four-year deal, a state-ment on Liverpool’s official websitereported.

His arrival at Anfield follow’sMascherano’s transfer to Barcelonaand Aquilani’s loan move toJuventus.

Meireles, quoted in The SundayExpress, said: “Roy Hodgson waskey to me coming here because heworked so hard to sign me.

“I am Meireles and notMascherano and that will be clear to the fans. I hope one day the Liverpoolfans will remember me for being successful.”

Meireles has won four titles with Porto and been capped 38 times byPortugal, playing in all four of his country’s games at the World Cup inSouth Africa.

He scored in Portugal’s 7-0 win over North Korea.Liverpool on Friday agreed a deal to send Mascherano to Barcelona after

the midfielder, whose family could not settle on Merseyside, was reportedlyunprepared to play for the club.

Aquilani also departed for Juventus in a loan deal which brought to anend, at least temporarily, an underwhelming and injury-hit spell in the city inwhich he failed adequately to replace Xabi Alonso.

With Liverpool financially constrained as owners George Gillett and TomHicks attempt to sell the club, fans have had to make do with limited arrivalsthis summer - Christian Poulsen from Juventus and Joe Cole on a free trans-fer from Chelsea being the headline names.
