Head of Denpasar Government Tourism Office, Putu Budiasa, said that so far Denpasar still lacked of some 1,000 rooms. It was based on the high number of tourists staying in the city es- pecially during the peak seasons. The hotel room availability at this time came to some 7,500 rooms, consisting of 3,500 rooms of star hotel and 4,000 rooms of budget hotel. They were still considered inadequate. “We often see that in certain seasons the hotels are over-book- ing,” said Budiasa when contacted on Monday (Jan 9). Bali Government had imposed a moratorium to balance the de- velopment in Bali, but Budiasa impressed to ignore the rules by reason of lacking of hotel rooms. “Indeed, the moratorium has been enforced. But, in fact we in Den- pasar still need more hotel rooms to accommodate tourists,” he said. Budiasa mentioned that not all areas in Denpasar could be built a hotel to meet the shortage of rooms. For example, continued Budiasa, it was no longer allowed to build hotels in Sanur area be- coming one of the tourist resorts in Denpasar. “Although we still open the opportunity to meet the hotel room demand in Denpasar, it does not necessarily mean we liberate all areas to be built with a hotel. At the moment, the open area for ho- tel construction is location around the Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan Mahendradatta,” he explained. The measure was also imple- mented to balance the tourist area in Denpasar. In consequence, the tourism area in Denpasar was not focused on particular areas. “We in Denpasar respect the morato- rium because it is intended for an even distribution of the develop- ment,” he said. PESHAWAR — A bomb targeting a militia opposed to the Pakistani Taliban exploded in a market close to the Afghan border Tuesday, kill-ing 25 people in the deadliest blast in the country in several months, officials said.

The explosion, likely detonated by remote control, hit vehicles being used by the militia in the Khyber re-gion, said local security officer Khan Dad Khan. It also wounded 24 people, said local government official Iqbal

Khan. Shopkeeper Sharif Gul said the blast ignited a huge fire.

“People were burning,” he said at a hospital in Peshawar, the main town in the northwest. “There was nothing to put out the fire.”

The army has supported the formation of anti-Taliban militias in northwest Pakistan, but the insur-gents have ruthlessly attacked the groups over the last two years. Many of the country’s bloodiest bombings have been against militia members or their families.

Mangupura (Bali Post)—With the implementation of toll

road development on the waters ofNusa Dua-Benoa, it is predicted if

Benoa will increase. The commu-nity urges the government again toimmediately realize theconstructionof ring road in the region.

Kuta who is also a legislator in theCommission B of Badung House, INyoman Karyana, said on Monday

Pratama was always crowded each

congestion in the road section couldnot be avoided despite the road wasrelatively short. “Stagnation canreach up to three hours though theJalan Pratama is short,” he said.

He explained the Jalan Pratamawas the main access for many tour-ism facilities in the Tanjung Benoaarea.Unfortunately, the roadsectionwas very narrow so it could not bepassed through by a lot of vehicles, especially tourist buses. The prob-lemhadbeenfrequentlycomplainedby residents and tourists.

Similar opinion was also ex-pressed by Chief of Bualu Cus-tomary Village, I Made Retha.According to him, so far thereality had showed if the roadsection was always crowded and

example, on the turn of the year

activities or economic activitiesare hampered. Moreover, it willbe getting more serious when thetoll road has been realized. Wedo hope the proposal of ring roadconstruction in the future can berealized,” he added.

Karyana said that people wor-ried if the impact of toll roadabove the waters was not antici-pated from now. The Nusa Dua– Benoa toll road was ascertained

Dua, especially on Jalan Pratama. On that account, Karyana urgedagain the Badung Regency toimmediately make detailed engi-

road in the Nusa Dua area as ananticipative measure. He expected

2012 Budget Amendment so theroad concerned could be accom-plished simultaneously with theNusa Dua – Benoa toll road.

The needs of adding the roadsection in the region, he said, wasurgent. If the Jalan Pratama waswidened and remained in two-waylane, it was impossible becausethe development was very dense.“Hence, we propose the JalanPratama could be made one-wayonly.The existing road is then con-tinued with the ring road above orat the edge of mangrove area andthen connected to Siligita intersec-tion,” said Karyana. The National League for De-mocracy (NLD) led by Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi boycot-ted what it saw as flawed elections in 2010 that signaled the end of half a century of military rule in the former Burma but it will contest by-elections in April.

Suu Kyi’s stature alone should en-sure it gains a presence in parliament but the party can only live off its role in the fight for democracy for so long. It badly needs to develop policies and then win over voters who come of age in the new parliamentary era.

Win Tin has a mind as sharp as when he was a journalist challeng-ing the brutal army dictatorship, which earned him 19 years in jail, but the longtime aide to Suu Kyi is 82 years old and many other NLD leaders aren’t much younger.

“Our party is too old,” Win Tin told Reuters, perched on the edge of his chair and leaning on a walking cane for support. “No one has suf-fered oppression like us, but after serving so long in prison, we’ve been rather disconnected.”

“We have youth leaders who are

over 50 -- one is even a grandfather. But now that there’s an opening, our party needs new life, new faces, new blood if we want to survive and make a difference. It’s time for us to make way for a new force.”

Suu Kyi has taken the leap of faith needed to commit her party to a po-litical system still controlled by the army and its proxies in parliament, a move welcomed by Western coun-tries cautiously renewing ties with the nominally civilian government.

In a landmark visit to Myanmar last week, British Foreign Secretary William Hague told the former junta leaders in charge of the government to ensure the polls were free and fair, making that one of the condi-tions for lifting sanctions imposed for human rights abuses under the military regime.

CAIRO - Islamists aim to deepen their control over Egypt’s lower house of parliament on Tuesday in a final phase of voting overshadowed by a threat from a liberal party to boycott elections for the upper chamber.

Banned under Hosni Mubarak, the Muslim Brotherhood has emerged as a major winner from the uprising that toppled him, ex-ploiting a well-organized support base in the first free legislative vote in decades. Islamists of various stripes are expected to win 60 per-cent of the 498-seat lower house, with the Brotherhood taking some 41 percent, by its own count.

Run-offs scheduled to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday and a rerun in a district where the vote was cancelled in the first round due to irregularities, are set to fill the 11 percent of seats as yet undecided, according to Brother-hood figures. The outcome of the runoffs and rerun are unlikely, however, to alter the dominance of the Islamists who now look set to wield major influence over the shape of a new constitution to be

drafted by 100-strong body that the new assembly will pick.

The Brotherhood has promised that Egyptians of all persua-sions will have their say. The strong Islamist performance has alarmed some liberal Egyptians and Western governments that backed Mubarak, but it is far from clear whether rival Islamists will form any alliance in the new assembly.

“With the exception of the par-ties that are part of our coalition, we stand at an equal distance from all parties,” Essam al-Erian, deputy head of the Muslim Broth-erhood’s Freedom and Justice Party, told Reuters.

“So far, we have begun limited consultations to gather the opin-ions of the blocs, parliamentary bodies and different parties but I will not announce these alliances until before parliament sits.”

Egypt’s staggered three-stage parliamentary election began on November 28 and drew an unprecedented turnout. Under a complex system, a third of the seats are reserved for individuals, and some of these will be decided in the runoffs.

Beijing said Monday that a new US defence strategy focused on countering China’s rising power was based on “groundless” charges, and insisted it posed no threat to any nation.

President Barack Obama un-veiled the strategy Thursday, calling for a leaner US military focused on countering China’s rising power and signalling a shift away from large ground wars against insurgents.

But China, whose People’s Lib-eration Army has benefited from a huge and expanding budget boosted

by the nation’s rapid economic growth, said the fears were base-less, urging the United States to “play a more constructive role”.

“The charges against China in this document are groundless and untrustworthy,” foreign ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in response to a question from state media about whether China poses a threat to US security.

Liu was referring to the strategy document released last week, which said the growth of China’s military power “must be accompanied by greater clarity of its strategic in-tentions in order to avoid causing

friction in the region”.“To maintain the peace, stability

and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region serves the common interest of all countries within the region,” he added. “We hope the US side will play a more constructive role to this end.”

JAKARTA - Indonesia`s planta-tion commodity exports are predicted to increase by up to US$8.4 billion to US$35.72 billion last year from US$27.35 billion the year before.

“The increase was fueled by higher commodity prices in the international market,” Director Gen-eral of Plantation at the Agriculture Ministry Gamal Nasir said here on Monday.

He said at least five commodities were listed as the biggest foreign exchange earners. They were palm oil, cocoa, rubber, coconut and copra, and coffee.

Palm oil was predicted to contrib-ute US$19.05 billion to the country`s foreign exchange earnings from planta-

tion commodities, followed by rubber US$12.4 billion, cocoa US$1.284 billion, coconut and copra US$1.198 billion, coffee US$1.09 billion.

By volume, the country`s plantation commodity exports were predicted to fall to 24.5 million tons in 2011 from 25.6 million tons in 2010, he said.

Until the third quarter of 2011, plantation commodity exports reached 18.4 million tons, he said.

He expressed hope that the global market for plantation commodities in 2011 would remain unchanged this year.

The increase in the value of planta-tion commodity exports was also the result of restructuring program aimed at increasing production, productivity and quality of plantation commodities, he said.

Indonesia now had 92 outlying islets of which 31 were inhabited, the ministry`s director general of

maritime affairs, coastal areas and islets, Sudirman Saad said here on Monday.

The islets had large natural resources which served as develop-ment asset. However, they lacked human resources to develop the natural resources, he said.

“In general, the outlying islets lag behind other parts of the country in terms of infrastructures,” he said at a function marking the signing of a

cooperation agreement between the ministry and Hasanuddin University on development of Sebatik island off the eastern coast of Kalimantan island.

To that end, he said the ministry would team up with institutes of higher learning to speed up the development of the outlying islets, particularly the inhabited islets bor-

dering other countries in a compre-hensive and integrated manner.

The 12 islets are Sebatik, Nu-sakambangan, Miangas, Marore, Marampit, Lingayan, Maratua, Wetar, Alor, Enggano, Simuk and Dubi Kecil. He said the government would gradually develop 92 islets across the country until 2014.

JAKARTA - Jakarta and Canberra on Monday agreed to boost their fight against people-smug-gling, amid concerns that Indonesia’s planned visa policies may result in a surge of asylum-seekers to Australia.

Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd met his Indonesian counterpart Marty Natalegawa in Jakarta to discuss joint efforts to combat the grow-ing number of illegal migrants using Indonesia as a springboard to Australia by boat, often in perilous journeys that end in tragedy.

“What we have agreed is to now embrace a programme of joint cooperation on the question of document fraud and document identity,” Rudd told reporters without elaborating.

Asylum seekers are suspected of entering Indo-nesia or other transit countries with forged travel or identity documents, before trying to head illegally for Australia. Last month, an overloaded vessel,

carrying about 250 mostly Iranian and Afghan asylum seekers, sank off Indonesia’s eastern Java, killing all but 47 people on board.

Indonesia’s proposal to relax visa restrictions for some foreign citizens, including major migrant source countries such as Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, leading to fears in Australia that more asylum-seekers will try to enter.

Rudd said Natalegawa had “confirmed” that new arrangements would be “subject to normal review within the Indonesian system” and handled by relevant officials and agencies.

Natalegawa said while new regulations require visitors to apply for visas in their home countries instead of Indonesia, their applications will still be processed in Jakarta “in most instances” and subject to proper procedures.

“It is not on arrival or visa-free facilitation,” Natalegawa told reporters. Besides people smug-gling, Rudd also discussed cooperation in trade, the economy and natural disasters management.

TIMIKA — Two Indonesian workers were shot to death in an attack near Freeport-McMoRan’s gold and copper mine. Freeport Indonesia spokesman Ramdani Sirait said the victims were employees of a contractor who were by car near the mining town of Tembagapura.

Sirait says initial reports indicate that gunmen fired on the vehicle. Police were not immediately available for comment on Monday’s attack.

The mine in restive Papua province is run by a subsidiary of the Phoenix, Arizona-based Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. It has been hit with arson, roadside attacks and blockades since operations began in the 1970s.

Suluban Beach is one of the places of interest belonging to Badung regency. It is known for its beautiful beach along with amazing wave; best for surfing. The natural beauty of the southern tip of Bali’s highland with its hollowing waves and peaceful surroundings has at-tracted more and more visitors to enjoy its serenity and peacefulness. The water is also clear.

Located a few kilometers north of the ancient temple of Uluwatu, the beach is facing the vast Indian Ocean. From the parking area one must descend down stairs and pass through long narrow gap of cliff before reaching the large waves make it one of the best places for surfing in all of Bali, as surfing lovers throughout the world have already discovered.

This beach is located not so far to the north of Uluwatu, adjacent to the surf beach Bingin and Labu-

Suluban Beach named, because visitors who want to go there must go through a rock cave on the beach before finally reaching abroad, white sand with the waves roaring fun for surfers.

Coastal sea water is very clear and the waves are high enough, so that is the best known beach among surfers. In the afternoon, we could see a beautiful sunset views.

Some tourism facilities such as restaurants, bars, surf equipment rental and repair shop is available. This beach is not too crowded like Kuta or Dreamland.

It is so very romantic to spend time with your partner or a walk with the family.

The Little Willies’ second album, “For The Good Times” — a Kris Kristofferson composition made into a country standard by Ray Price — once again puts a loose-yet-sophisticated spin on several old-school classics.

Truly a group project, the Little Willies focus on individual musicianship and ensemble inter-action. Guitarist Jim Campilongo especially, is single-note-style treasure; bassist Lee Alexander,

guitarist-singer Richard Julian, and drummer Dan Rieser also return and make important contribu-tions. Julian occasionally takes lead vocals, sound-ing especially effective on the great, rarely covered Willie Nelson ballad, “Permanently Lonely.”

“For The Good Times” lacks the freewheeling fun of the Little Willies’ 2006 self-titled debut. Still, the imaginative updates on songs by Johnny Cash, Lefty Frizzell, Loretta Lynn and Parton reach beyond careful reverence or tongue-in-cheek country posturing, translating classic tunes in a way that shows off Jones’ sly phrasing and the musical talents of her band mates.

LOS ANGELES — “Hugo” filmmaker Martin Scorsese and “Midnight in Paris” creator Woody Allen were among nomi-nees Monday for top filmmaking honors from the Directors Guild of America. Also nominated for the 64th annual Directors Guild honors were David Fincher for the thriller “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”; Michel Ha-zanavicius for the silent film “The Artist”; and Alexander Payne for the family drama “The Descendants.”

The only first-time con-tender among the nominees, French filmmaker Haza-navicius could emerge as a front-runner for “The Artist,” his black-and-white throwback to early Hol-lywood that has been a fa-vorite at earlier Hollywood honors.

Scorsese now has nine Directors Guild nomina-tions and is a past feature-film winner for 2006’s “The Departed,” as well as a TV drama winner a year ago for an episode of “Boardwalk Empire.” The family film “Hugo” was a departure for Scorsese, known for dark crime tales, and the movie also was his first shot in 3-D.

Allen has been nomi-nated five times and won for 1977’s “Annie Hall.” He

had not been nominated since his 1989 “Crimes and Misdemean-ors” but has been on a critical and commercial resurgence for the romantic fantasy “Midnight in Paris,” his biggest hit in de-cades.

This was the third nomination for Fincher, who also was in the running a year ago for “The Social Network.” Payne was nominated one time previously,

for 2004’s “Sideways.”Missing out on a nomination

was three-time Directors Guild winner Steven Spielberg for “War Horse.” Also left out was Terrence Malick for “The Tree of Life,” an epic family drama that won top honors at the Cannes Film Festival but was a love-it-or-hate-it title among critics and fans.

The Directors Guild field is one of Hollywood’s most accurate forecasts for who will be in the running at the Academy Awards, whose nominations come out Jan. 24. Most guild contenders go on to grab nomina-tions for the Oscars. Only six times in the previous 63 years has the guild’s winner failed to receive the directing prize at the Oscars.

Last year, Tom Hooper won at both the Direc-tors Guild and the Oscars for “The King’s Speech.” Fincher had been the fa-vorite to win at the Direc-tors Guild for “The Social Network,” but key prizes from Hollywood trade guilds built late momentum for “The King’s Speech,” which dominated the Os-cars with four awards, in-cluding best picture. The guild will announce its winners at a Jan. 28 din-ner, with Kelsey Grammer as host.

LOS ANGELES - Liam Hems-worth’s star has yet to rise, but the 21-year-old actor is continuing to beef up his ever-expanding roster of upcoming lead roles.

His latest is as the main character in the action-heist movie “Empire State,” TheWrap has confirmed. The brother of “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth is also starring in “The Hunger Games,” “The Expendables 2” and “AWOL,” all due this year, and “Timeless,” a Phillip Noyce drama due in 2013.

Also in talks for “Empire State” is Dwayne Johnson. If Hemsworth and Johnson pair up for that movie, it could be their second co-billing. Hemsworth is

also confirmed to star in Chuck Russell’s “Arabian Knights,” as Ali Baba. Johnson has been rumored to play Sinbad.

As it’s name suggests, “Empire State,” produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman, is set in New York. But New Orleans is being targeted as a possible shoot-ing location for the “gritty,” 1980s-set movie, according to an individual close to the project.

Dates for preproduction and shoot-ing are still being squared away for “Empire State,” which is directed by Dito Montiel (“A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” “Fighting”) and written by Adam Mazer (“You Don’t Know Jack,” “Breach”). The film is due in theaters June 10, 2013.

“There’s nowhere to go with the snow because it’s piled up so high,” said Wendy Rainney, who owns the Orca Adventure Lodge. A storage building for the lodge — which offers fishing trips, hiking, kayak-ing and glacier tours — partially collapsed under the weight of the snow, she said.

“This is more quantity than can be handled.” At least three buildings have collapsed or partially col-lapsed and six homes are deemed severely stressed by heavy wet snow, officials said. The drifts are

12 to 14 feet high, but most roofs in town have been shoveled, said Chris Dunlap, a Cordova resident who was manning an empty Red Cross shelter early Monday.

“It’s a lot of snow. I’ve lived here 33 years and this is the most snow I’ve ever seen,” she said by phone. “The thing I’m impressed most with is we haven’t had any injuries. Maybe a few back strains from all of the shoveling. But we have a very, very efficient, professional emergency staff here.”

The city has set up a shelter at a

local recreation center but said people leaving homes in avalanche-risky areas have been staying with other residents. Cordova spokesman Allen Marquette said the town also was ready to set up a pet shelter if necessary.

The town issued a disaster proc-lamation last week after three weeks of relentless snow overwhelmed lo-cal crews working around the clock and filled snow dump sites. “We had no alternative but to declare an emergency,” Cordova Mayor Jim Kallander said. “It became a life-safety issue.”

NEW YORK - New DNA reader could bring genetics to medical clinics After years of predictions that the “$1,000 genome” - a read-out of a person’s complete genetic information for about the cost of a dental crown - was just around the corner, a U.S. company is announc-ing Tuesday that it has achieved that milestone and taken the technology several steps ahead.

The new genome-sequencing machine from Ion Torrent, a divi-sion of Life Technologies Corp., in Guilford, Connecticut, is 1,000 times more powerful than existing technology, says CEO and chair-man Jonathan Rothberg.

Taking up about as much space as an office printer, it can sequence an entire genome in a single day rather than six to eight weeks re-quired only a few years ago. The new sequencer, says cardiologist Eric Topol, chief academic officer of private California hospital and

doctor network Scripps Health, “represents an exceptional advance and can change medicine.”

Ion Torrent will sell the tabletop machine, called the Ion Proton Se-quencer, for $99,000 to $149,000, making it affordable for large medi-cal practices or clinics; existing sequencers cost up to $750,000. The computer chip and biochemicals to sequence a genome will cost $1,000, compared to, for example, $3,000 to test for mutations just in the BRCA genes that raise the risk of breast and ovarian cancer and $5,000 for a complete genome sequencing by Ion Torrent competitor Illumina Inc. For a graphic on the shrinking cost of genome sequencing.

For now, Rothberg expects research labs to be his main cus-tomers, using Proton to obtain the complete genome sequence of people with cancer or autism, for instance, and thereby elucidate a disease’s underlying genetic causes as well as possible ways to treat it.

Jumping lizards adjust the posi-tion of their tails in mid-air to ensure a smooth landing, and certain agile dinosaurs probably did likewise. So say a team of biomechanics who put some red-headed agama lizards (Agama agama) through their paces in a laboratory.

The scientists filmed the Afri-can reptiles as they jumped from a horizontal platform to a vertical wall.

Slow-motion footage showed that if a lizard had to hoist the front part of its body in order to land correctly, it bent its long, slender tail upwards.

By curling its tail, the lizard provided a clockwise movement that gave an anticlockwise tilt to the front of its trunk. This enabled the critter to land safely, paws-first, onto the wall. Few lizards may have known this, but they were uphold-ing the principle of conservation of angular momentum by exploiting the moment of inertia.

Tightrope walkers, too, use this principle. They correct their balance by using a long pole. It is tilted to make the body lean in the opposite direction to the tilt. The team, led by Robert Full of the University of California at Berkeley, built a liz-ard-sized robot car, complete with a

tail controlled by gyroscopes, to see whether the lizard’s agility could be replicated by technology.

When the car jumped off the ramp, it started to fall nose-first, but this angle was smartly corrected by a movement of the tail, and the toy vehicle -- named “Tailbot” -- landed on its wheels. Previous research has suggested there are several species of animals that use their tail to harness the moment of inertia, including lemurs, cats and kangaroo rats.

The paper speculates that small, two-footed carnivorous dinosaurs, including the velociraptor made noto-rious by the movie Jurassic Park, may also have done the same trick. Larger dinos, though, are unlikely to have jumped far, if calculations of their bone-to-muscle ratio are right.

A handout photo released by Nature shows a side view of a lizard, A. agama, leaping to a vertical surface. Jumping lizards adjust the position of their tails in mid-air to ensure a smooth landing, and certain agile dino-saurs probably did likewise.

The city is used to snow, but not like this season’s blanketing. The Guard reported more than 18 feet of snow has fallen in the past weeks, although the National Weather Service did not immediately have a measurement.

The seven-time MotoGP champion failed to win a race in his first season with the Italian squad last year. Rossi said his preference was to continue in MotoGP beyond this season, and that ideally he hoped to take Ducati back to the top before leaving the sport.

“The scenario is that during the sea-son everything will become interesting, because all riders have their contracts expiring, so cards can be shuffled,” he said.

“Honestly I don’t know [about the future]. I would like to be able to make Ducati go fast and be able to win some-thing, and then perhaps even stop - to race for a few more years and achieve some good results this is perhaps my goal but there are many other possibili-

ties, but not now.“I would like to at least do another

contract so would like to sign at least another two-year contract.” Rossi added that he did not want his 2013 delibera-tions to become a distraction from trying to improve Ducati’s form in 2012.

“I think we are going to be speaking about the contract during the season, because we have to organise ourselves for 2013,” he said. “I do not want to do it too soon because when you risk losing concentration on the championship as it is underway, but we will try and plan my future.”

Although Rossi has long been linked to future in car racing or rallying, he said there were no firm plans for this at pres-ent, only ambitions for whenever he did

decide to finish with MotoGP.“I am a great fan of cars, and I had

two occasions to try the Mercedes DTM in 2006,” said Rossi. “It is a fantastic car, one of the nost fun cars I have ever driven, so I would love to do races in DTM - but these are projects to talk about when I finish motorbikes.

“For cars, I have no programmes apart from Monza Rally, but I tried GT3 in Mugello and I hope on some other occa-sions. I would also like to go to the old Nurburgring with an old Mercedes.”

LONDON - Kimi Raikkonen will prepare for his Formula One comeback with some laps in a two-year-old Renault race car in Spain this month before official testing starts in Febru-ary, the Finn’s Lotus team said Monday.

“We can now confirm that Kimi Raikkonen will be completing some mileage in the team’s R30 car at Valencia on 23rd/24th January,” Lotus, formerly Renault, said on their Twitter feed.

Raikkonen, the 2007 world cham-pion with Ferrari, has not driven an

F1 car since he left the sport for the world rally championship after the 2009 season-ender in Abu Dhabi.

The first pre-season test of the year will start at the Jerez circuit, in southern Spain, on February 7 when Lotus will have their new car on track.

Under cost-saving regulations that limit testing, Raikkonen will not be able to drive the latest equipment until Jerez

and nor will he be able to use the Pirelli tires that were introduced last year. The 32-year-old had

a seat fitting at the team factory in England last week.
