LAS VEGAS — The newly crowned Miss USA is a 26-year-old Army officer from the District of Columbia who gave perhaps the strongest answer of the night when asked about women in combat.

“As a woman in the United States Army, I think ... we are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit, I’m powerful, I am dedicated,” Deshauna Barber said. “Gender does not limit us in the United States.”

The winner of Sunday’s 2016 Miss USA competition held at the T-Mobile Arena off the Las Vegas Strip will go on to compete in the Miss Universe contest.

Barber is the first-ever military member to win Miss USA. In a press conference following the event, the 26-year-old lieutenant from Northeast DC said she plans to take a break from the Army Reserves and had already discussed with superiors the possibility of going inactive for a couple of years should she win the title. She said she currently serves two days per month.

“My commander should be watching right now,” Barber said. “Two days a month is definitely not active duty. It is an obligation that I signed up for but they are very flexible in the United States Army Reserves.”

Barber said she plans to use the pageant’s spotlight and her title to support veteran’s causes and tackle the

issue of suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder among military members. When asked what message she had for the presidential candidates — including former pageant owner and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump — Barber said they should focus more on veteran’s issues, including the backlog at veterans hospitals.

“I think that a lot of the topics that they discuss isn’t as important,” she said in a glittering gold gown.

Barber’s not the only contestant who had to address the election and the Republican candidate, who had a public break-up with the beauty pageant organization last year.

Trump offended Hispanics when he made anti-immi-grant remarks in announcing his bid for the White House last June. He at the time co-owned The Miss Universe Organization with NBCUniversal, but the network and the Spanish-language broadcaster Univision quickly cut ties with him, refusing to air the show. Trump sued both networks, eventually settling and selling off the entire pageant to talent management company WME/IMG.

Miss Hawaii, who came in second Sunday night, punted during the question-and-answer segment when asked who she would vote for among the likely presidential candidates, Trump or Democrat Hillary Clinton. (ap)

COVER STORYFrom page 1Security...

He further explained that in general, the rising seawa-ter is caused by two factors, namely the rising tide due to astronomical factor (lunar-terrestrial gravitation) and weather factor. High tide due to astronomical factor often occurs periodically, while weather factor is caused by the influence of wind speed, duration of wind blow (including the persistence of wind direction), fetch as well as the influence of winds from other regions (swell).

“Currently, the wind dominantly blows from the east - southeast, coupled with the low pressure center (L) in the Indian Ocean generating the constructive wave value or climb up,” he said.

Further, he said that the rise in high sea waves have occurred from the end of May 2016, while the case of high waves occurred around Kuta Beach is a combina-tion of the effect of high waves in the waters of Southern Bali with the astronomical high tide that will last until the upcoming June 10.

This happened because Bali this time is entering the period of new moon, in which the lunar-terrestrial-solar position is in the same line causing a very high tide. He appealed to tourism players on the beach and travelers spending vacation on the beach to remain cautious and vigilant against high waves around the Kuta Beach. (win)

“Please try to contact via tele-phone because the chief security is not on duty today. Sorry, I am afraid of giving the wrong information,” he said.

In response to the case, a tourism player, Made Suardana, regretted the incident because the impact is detrimental to the peaceful image of Bali tourism. Necessarily the hotel should be more strictly main-taining the security and comfort of guests. Thus, it revives the security synergies, especially at hotels in the area of tourism.

“From the beginning, there are three elements being ready to secure the tourism in Bali, namely hotel, local community or custom-ary villagers and police. The syn-ergy and mutual cooperation must

be improved,” said Suardana who also serves as manager at one of the hotels in Tuban.

According to Suardana, the hotel should be able to detect early any negative things coming into the hotel area. It can be carried out by doing checks at the hotel entrance and lobby, the installation of CCTV and other security devices. Par-ticipation of customary villagers is also expected to assess and regulate its residents.

While the role of police is clear namely providing indirect assis-tance such as training on security system and direct security syner-gies. “If the three elements work, I am sure it can lower the crime rates at hotel. Surely the hotel itself does periodically from the lowest level to management. The hotel management better knows about its guests,” he said.

Furthermore, he said that if there

is a mistake or a criminal case oc-curred at hotel, the management should be caring and responsible for it. “For example, the hotel indemnifies the theft afflicting to guests. It is a big mistake if hotel management does not care about the condition of guest,” said Su-ardana.

Other than robbery, the hotel management must help find out the culprit when hotel guests re-porting to have been cheated at fraudulent money changer. On that account, the hotel should have an integrated security system and security teams.

“It’s very concerned that theft case coming into the hotel area. Moreover, it is a snatching,” said a legal practitioner, Haposan Si-hombing.

The hotel is expected to further enhance the cooperation with po-lice authority, particularly in the

matter of training the security to anticipate suspicious things for the sake of security and maintenance of security of the in-house guests.”The exercises for hotel security are very important and carried out continu-ously,” he said.

Supervision against hotel secu-rity system should be performed by police. Should there be any staffs working inappropriate with standards or procedures, they can be reported to management. “In the future we expect the cooperation of hotel and police authority in par-ticular can be improved, especially in the development of security,” said Haposan.

Spokesman of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, said that the re-port of snatching at the lobby of Hotel Horison remains under investigation of the South Kuta Police backed up the Denpasar Police. In the meantime, the Bali

Police through the Directorate of Security of Vital Objects will summon the management of Hotel Horison to check its safety standardization.

According to him, the hotel management is responsible for the security at hotel area. Police can issue a reprimand when finding any infeasibility of physical secu-rity systems, food, hydrants and others. It will affect the assessment of hotel security standardization rating becoming the program of the Bali Police. (rah)

BERLIN - Dwarfed by huge jets all around, the mini-plane Thor was nonetheless an eye-catcher at the Berlin air show this week -- the small Airbus marvel is the world’s first 3D-printed aircraft.

Windowless, weighing in at just 21 kilos (46 pounds) and less than four metres (13 feet) long, the drone Thor -- short for “Test of High-tech Objectives in Reality” -- resembles a large, white model airplane.

Yet to the European aerospace giant Airbus, the small pilotless propeller aircraft is a pioneer that offers a taste of things to come -- an aviation future when 3D printing technology promises to save time, fuel and money.

“This is a test of what’s possible with 3D printing technology,” said Detlev Konigorski, who was in charge of developing Thor for Airbus, speaking at the International Aerospace Exhibition and Air Show at Berlin’s southern Schoenefeld airport.

“We want to see if we can speed up the devel-opment process by using 3D printing not just for individual parts but for an entire system.”

In Thor, the only parts that are not printed from a substance called polyamide are the elec-trical elements.

The little plane “flies beautifully, it is very

stable,” said its chief engineer Gunnar Haase, who conducted Thor’s inaugural flight last November near the northern German city of Hamburg.

Airbus and its US rival Boeing are already using 3D printing, notably to make parts for their huge passenger jets the A350 and B787 Dreamliner.

“The printed pieces have the advantage of requiring no tools and that they can be made very quickly,” said Jens Henzler of Bavaria-based Hofmann Innovation Group, which specialises in the new technology.

The metal parts produced can also be 30-50 percent lighter than in the past, and there is al-most zero manufacturing waste, added Henzler, who is managing director for Hofmann industrial prototyping.

The sky is not the limit for the technology -- engineers also plan to use it in space.

The future Ariane 6 rocket of European space agency ESA, set to blast off from 2020, is set to feature many printed pieces.

“It brings big cost reductions on parts manu-facturing,” said Alain Charmeau, head of Airbus Safran Launchers. Partially as a result of this, the Ariane 6 may have half the price tag of its predecessor Ariane 5. (afp)

Geophysicist Ian Hamling said that since 1950, enough magma to fill 80,000 Olympic-size swimming pools has squeezed up beneath the surface near the coastal town of Matata, about 200 kilometers (120 miles) southeast of Auckland.

A paper published Saturday in the online journal Science Advances outlines the findings. Hamling, the pa-per’s lead author, said that while other parts of New Zealand have active volcanoes, there have been none near Matata for at least 400,000 years.

“It was quite a big surprise,” he said in an interview with The Associ-ated Press.

Using GPS data and satellite im-ages, the scientists say they discov-ered an area of land about 400 square kilometers (154 square miles) has risen by 40 centimeters (16 inches) since 1950.

Hamling said a period of quick uplift between 2004 and 2011 likely triggered thousands of small earth-quakes. Scientists had previously thought tectonic shifts caused the quakes.

Hamling said the magma remained about 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface, deep enough that he

didn’t expect a volcano to develop within his lifetime. He said a volcano could develop over hundreds or thou-sands of years, or the magma could eventually cool and harden.

Matata is home to about 650 people. Hamling said he hoped further study would allow scientists to develop a warning system for earthquakes in the area. He said the quakes are likely triggered by magma stressing and breaking rock.

Hamling said it was unusual world-wide to discover magma buildup in an area with no volcanoes. He said modern equipment allowed them to accurately measure tiny horizontal and vertical changes in the coastal land.

Just over half of the area studied is offshore, however, and Hamling said the scientists needed to rely on infer-ences from what happened on the land to gauge the changes underwater.

Victoria Miller, a volcanologist with Geoscience Australia who was not involved in the research, said the location was of interest because it was outside of an active volcanic area.

“The scientific analysis seems robust and notes the limitations of modelling an offshore source,” Miller wrote in an email. (ap)

WELLINGTON — Scientists say they’ve discovered a magma buildup near a New Zealand town that explains a spate of recent earthquakes and could signal the beginnings of a new volcano — although they’re not expecting an eruption anytime soon.

TABANAN - Sitting down among the crowd of the Tabanan Market, Ni Komang Widanti, 36, occasionally looks wiping her sweat while chatting with her fellow market porters (tukang suwun). Sometimes, their conversation stops when there is customer in need of her services.

Deftly Widanti carries a basket over the head which has been used as the source of life. Well, over half of her days are spent at the market in order that she can get rupiah regardless of her health.

Armed with a huge basket on her head, this market porter can at least lift the weight to 30 kilograms. Ironically, the rewards they get are not too much or only around IDR 2,000 to IDR 3,000. “Merchants at the market have become my regular customers. Once transporting their goods is only charged at IDR 2,000. However, if the goods like a basket full of watermelon will be paid at IDR 3,000,” she said.

It is not only merchants selling in the market, Widanti with hundreds of market porters at the Tabanan Market also offer services to residents that shop. By and large, the housewives shopping pretty much take advantage of their services.

One by one the purchased goods are put into the basket carried on the head and then delivered to the location such as in the parking lot of vehicles belonging to residents asking for her services.

“Now, our job order is quiet as people prefer to bring their own goods. Coinciding with holidays, I usually get not too much. For once transporting goods we are sometimes rewarded at IDR 5,000,” she said.

This woman from Bongan village admitted to have become a market porter since 2008. Initially she pursued a variety of jobs a restaurant or shop-ping centers in Badung and Denpasar. Unfortunately, after five years of mar-riage, Widanti have not been blessed with a child so that she decided to stop working.

The attempt to get a baby was finally reached. Now, this housewife with two children has to help his husband to meet the needs of family life.

Before finally deciding to become a market porter, Widanti should work hard to help his brother to sell at the Tabanan Market. “I’d rather not to be bound, and become a market porter,” he said.

Widanti said that in a day she can get income as much as IDR 70,000 and when the market atmosphere is bustling she can sometimes get IDR 100,000. “She works from 05:00 until 12:00, when the condition is bustling she can get IDR 100,000 but it is hard,” she said.

Although it is hard for Widanti, be-coming a market porter is not a trivial job. “Rather than having no job, I can go to the market any time I want,” she concluded. (kmb28)

For example, the Tukad Mati or inactive river area at Dangin Tukadaya is even backfilled. Ad-ditionally, the power pole of the PLN at the location to be used for settlement is dredged so that it almost collapses.

As seen on Sunday (Jun. 5), at the plot land of Sebual hamlet, Dangin Tukadaya, the river flow or inactive river with the length of 500 meters and located in the middle of the land spreading across around 1.2 hectares developed by PT Anugerah Pertiwi was also backfilled with heavy equipment. The backfilling caused the adjacent residents to protest and deplore it. A number of residents said that the inactive river functions to collect water catchment at the surrounding area remaining a paddy field in the area of Subak Tamblang.

Kadek Suanta, a local resident, said if the inactive river is back-filled for the need of residential road the paddy fields will have no waterway for their disposal later on. Moreover, during rainy season,

the inactive river functions as reser-voir and restrains the stream rate of the Sebual River in the east of the land plot so that does not rise to the mainland. “If the area is backfilled, the recharge area here can be hit by floods,” said Kadek Suanta.

In the meantime, the head-man of Dangin Tukadaya, Gusti Murdi, when asked for his con-firmation admitted there is a land plotting in his territory. Related to backfilling of the inactive river, according to him, the road access will be built and handed over to local village.

He added that the inactive river is backfilled so that it will not be taken advantage as landfill and mosquito will not be breed-ing there. “In the village meeting involving the developer and local community leaders was agreed that the Tukad Mati is backfilled and will be made the road ac-cess,” he explained.

In the meantime, in the area of Subak Abian Petanahan, Batu-agung village, the leveling of

SEMARAPURA - Start-ing this Monday, the city tour package will be tested by directing all travelers mak-ing a visit to Kerthagosa to a predetermined route. Although there are additional attractions to be visited by travelers other than Kerthagosa, the Culture and Tourism Agency will remain to sell the old ticket price for domestic traveler at IDR 12,000. The operation of city tour program is expected to boost the tourists visit to Semarapura.

The Head of the Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency, Wayan Sujana, disclosed on Monday (Jun. 6) that all trav-elers making a visit to Kertha-gosa attraction will be directed to park at the Semarapura sub-

terminal having been repaired previously as a parking area for visitors. “We will test the city tour package as planned, so that travelers are expected to adjust to the new route,” he said, Sunday (Jun. 5).

In addition to directing travelers to the sub-terminal parking lot, his agency will also move the booth of ad-mission ticket attendant to that location. By doing so, the attendant can collect the admission ticket directly at the sub-terminal. According to Sujana, the ticket price will be adjusted to the admission ticket to Kerthagosa at IDR 12,000 for domestic travel-ers considering the levy must correspond to the regional regulation, explained Sujana.

“Regarding the parking levy, the Klungkung Culture and Tourism Agency will coordi-nate with the Transportation and Infocom Agency,” he said.

At the trial of the city tour, local and foreign travelers have been able to visit the Klungkung Palace to see the collection of royal heritages. He also hoped the Klung-kung Palace prepares human resources and completeness so that it can be visited by travelers. Sujana admitted his agency is still experiencing shortages in tourist guides. However, the position will be filled gradually accord-ing to mechanism so as not to infringe the regulation. In the meantime, currently

the garden in the complex of Kerthagosa and Taman Gili is being arranged and added with toilet facilities.

With the city tour program, travelers making a visit to Klungkung will get a new at-traction. The leveling land to be used as a plot land by using heavy equipment even ignores the environmental impact.

NEGARA - Conversion of farmland into land plots or settlement in Jembrana is increasingly widespread. More seriously, the leveling land to be used as a plot land by using heavy equipment even ignores the environmental impact.

residential land area activities using heavy equipment almost caused two power poles of the PLN to collapse. It happened be-cause the land around the power poles was dredged.

Since the dredging reached two meters deeper than the lower end of the poles, the poles looked to be higher than the land sur-face so that the poles almost collapse.

According to local residents, the land in the region has a la-

bile texture. When flushed by rain, it will endanger the power poles having looked sloping toward the road, while another power pole is sloping toward the housing underneath. “Please pay attention to the power poles so as not to uproot because they have been dredged by bulldozer. If this happens they can topple over people’s house, including the electricity here will be black out,” said Ida Bagus Sutika, an adjacent resident. (kmb)

Waves up to five metres (17.5 feet) were pounding much of the east coast, including Sydney, with the Bureau of Meteorology warn-ing of further danger as the storm moves south.

Two bodies were found in cars washed away in flood waters while a man was swept off the rocks south of Sydney’s surfing beach of Bondi, police said.

The New South Wales state emergency services said they had received more than 9,250 calls and had conducted 280 flood rescues.

Insurers received more than 11,150 claims with estimated in-sured losses of A$38 million, the Insurance Council of Australia said. It expects the number of claims to

rise further over the coming days.Stocks in Australia biggest in-

surers, including QBE Insurance, Insurance Australia Group and Suncorp, skidded in a stronger wider market.

But CLSA analyst Jan Van Der Schalk did not see a major earnings impact on insurers who said they were still assessing the impact of the catastrophe.

Australian websites including Channel Nine, Foxtel Play and Domino’s Pizza went down on Sunday when Amazon Web Ser-vice’s Sydney zone experienced a two-hour power outage, ITnews website said.

An Amazon spokesman declined to comment but Amazon Web

Services’ status page on Monday showed several connectivity issues in Sydney had been resolved.

Automated teller machines and point-of-sale banking services were also hit.

A spokeswoman for the Port Authority of New South Wales state said Newcastle, the world’s largest exit point for sea-borne thermal coal and used by global miners Glencore , Rio Tinto and Anglo American, was placed on restricted ship move-ments over the weekend but did not sustain any damage.

“While some sites had minor production interruptions, none of these has impacted our con-tractual obligations or production forecasts,” Glencore said.

Port Kembla, the largest vehicle import hub in Australia, remained closed as the storm moved south. (rtr)

TAIPEI - Taiwan’s new defence minister said on Monday the island would not recognise any air defence zone declared by China over the South China Sea, as the island’s top security agency warned such a move could usher in a wave of regional tension.

U.S. officials have expressed concern that an international court ruling expected in coming weeks on a case brought by the Philippines against China over its South China Sea claims could prompt Beijing to declare an air defence identification zone, or ADIZ, as it did over the East China Sea in 2013.

China claims most of the South China Sea, through which $5 tril-lion in ship-borne trade passes every year. The Philippines, Viet-nam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims, as well as close military ties with Wash-ington.

“We will not recognise any ADIZ by China,” Taiwan Defence Minister Feng Shih-kuan told law-makers in parliament.

The comments came after Tai-wan’s new government of President Tsai Ing-wen, of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party, was sworn in last month. Tsai’s election victory overturned eight-years of China-friendly Na-

tionalist rule on the self-ruled island.

China, which considers Tai-wan a breakaway province, drew condemnation from Japan and the United States when it imposed its ADIZ, in which aircraft are sup-posed to identify themselves to Chinese authorities, above the East China Sea.

China has neither confirmed nor denied it plans such a zone for the South China Sea, saying that a deci-sion would be based on the threat level and that it had every right to set one up.

“In the future, we don’t rule out China designating an ADIZ. If China is on track to announce this, it could usher in a new wave of tension in the region,” Taiwan’s National Security Bureau said in a report presented to parliament.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, asked wheth-er China would set up an ADIZ for the South China Sea, said many factors needed consideration, es-pecially the level of threat faced in the air.

“Many countries have set up ADIZs. This has nothing to do with various countries’ territorial or maritime rights issues,” he told a daily news briefing, without elabo-rating. (rtr)

S.China Sea96 students from 11 countries graduated on the day. It was a gala event and the school was done up opulently. The theme of the ceremo-ny was “Never Give Up”. Mr. A.P. Singh the Principal of GMIS Jakarta was the guest of honour and the key-note speaker of the ceremony. The key-note speaker mentioned in his speech that the only way is up for those who are ready to work hard and never give up. The only way to grease the palm of lady fortune is by the dint of hard-work. The graduates were suggested not to take up short cuts to achieve success. Success story is written by those who are industrious by nature.

Ms. J. Biswas the Principal of GMIS-Bali declared them graduates midst a thunderous applause by the parents and students. The Principal marked in her speech that the stu-dents of grade 12 should work hard and take care of the environment, their parents, nature, do some com-munity service and indulge in some hobbies while they are climbing the ladder of success.

The students of grade 10 were suggested that they should seek guidance from parents and teachers, complete grade 12 and then only they should go for higher studies. When was further asked on this by our correspondent Ms. Biswas said that she has experienced as an edu-

cationist that some money making agencies lure students saying that students can do foundation courses to join universities and save some time and money although in reality the students after grade 10 (IGCSE Cambridge) are not ready emotion-ally, mentally and intellectually. Students usually find it difficult to adjust and secure admission in good universities. She feels that it is her duty as Principal to guide her students to make the right choice. Our correspondent was informed by the Principal that the class of 2016 (Grade 12) after completing IB Diploma Program- Geneva are join-ing renowned universities around the globe in Canada, Switzerland, Korea, USA, UK, Australia, Sin-gapore, India, Indonesia and other parts of the world.

Jeremy Raka Chuardy- the head boy of the school administered the oath to the graduates.

Ni Putu Ayu Kesuma Santhi Wangi- the head-girl of the school for the year 2015-16 delivered her rather emotional valedictorian speech in which she mentioned that it was an emotional moment for all the students of grade 12 since they are leaving the school, teachers and friends. She mentioned that the teachers have always been there to support them in academics. The school held Saturday classes

throughout the year and during December holidays without charg-ing any extra fee. Ayu’s throat was almost choked while she was mak-ing the speech.

The best part of the evening with the candle lighting ceremony which took place in the play area of the school and the young gradu-ates stood in front of their parents in rows. the mother candle was lit and the light was taken by Mr. A.P. Singh, handed it over to the Principal and then to the Supervisor and finally the class teachers lit the candles of every child and when all the candles were lit up, the students took the candles to their parents, in a way thanking them for their love, support and affection. It was a very emotional sight.

The parents who attended the ceremony were rather elated over this fact that students have been taught and taken care of by the school. There has always been a special touch of kindness that makes this school stand out from the rest of the school of the island. The school motivates to partici-pate in community service while being empathetic to others and the school has truly raised the bar in every field- academics, sports, co-curricular activities. They are very happy with the growth of the students and feel that their children are becoming citizens of the world and would celebrate life in the true sense. (adv)

SINGARAJA - A number of fishermen in the region of Kubuan-yar hamlet, Kubutambahan, earn income from the sea by looking for fish catches. Responding to the issue on the construction of the Buleleng International Airport (BIB) in Buleleng both on land and the reclamation of the sea channel, fishermen hoped they can continue to work to catch fish. The issue on the airport development has been widespread in the community of Kubutambahan and the land sales among the brokers is widely at issue related to the possibility of skyrocketing prices of land.

A local fisherman, Komang Jentol, 40, working as fishermen every day, goes to sea for catching fish by using nets for eight hours a day. When returning from catching fish, a number of relatives helped him drag traditional boat to be parked on the beach. He already heard about the government’s plan that will develop an airport in the Kubutambahan area, whether on land or at sea. “I’ve heard about the development plan of the airport but we do not know where it will be built, sir. It is said it can be on mainland and at sea. Hopefully, I can go to sea because this is my profession done every day,” he said, Sunday (Jun. 6).

Similarly opinion was stated by another fisherman, Ngurah Saputra, 24, where he got information that an airport will be built in Kubu-tambahan. The airport development should follow the infrastructure, especially the main road and the readiness of human resources in Buleleng. So far, fishermen just rely on the result on fishing common dolphin fish and mackerel tuna,

and the catch tends to be uncertain. “But, we do not know yet where the location will be. Many people say it will be located in Kubutambahan,” he said.

In the meantime, when con-firmed separately via mobile phone the Head of Regional Development Planning Board (Bappeda) of Buleleng, Gde Darmaja, said the location of the airport in Buleleng is admitted to be uncertain because it has not led to technical develop-ment. “Yes, he (the regent—Ed) only provides recommendation for advanced study plan, so that it still needs long process. In the regional spatial plan (RTRW), it remains in general and has not entered into technical matters (development of the airport—Ed). However, in the RTRW of Bali Province is men-tioned that an airport will be built in Buleleng. For the time being, the airport construction is not sure yet,” said Darmaja.

Previously, it has been known that Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana has signed a letter of recommen-dation regarding the advanced study of the airport development in North Bali, Tuesday (May 30). Regent PAS simultaneously addressed the issues in the com-munity if the local government is considered to hamper the airport development. Buleleng district itself supports the investors car-rying out the further studies for the airport project. Letter of rec-ommendation received from the Bali Province mentioned the point that investors submitted a request to conduct further study for the airport construction, while the airport construction itself has not owned certainty yet. BUSINESS

BISMARCK — A decade ago, then-Microsoft executive Doug Burgum stood before a cheering crowd at a technology conference in Dallas and introduced his boss, company co-founder Bill Gates, by describing what makes entrepre-neurs successful.

“Innovators are people who go against the grain” by taking risks and chasing dreams, said Burgum, who’d become a tech star in his own right af-ter selling his North Dakota software company to Microsoft for more than $1 billion. “They’ve got the ability to think in a counterintuitive way.”

Now Burgum is pursuing his most unlikely venture yet: becom-ing governor of North Dakota in his first shot at elected office and against his party’s wishes.

It’s not unusual anymore for wealthy business people to try to leap from the boardroom to the governor’s office. Rick Snyder and Bruce Rauner did it in Michigan and Illinois, respectively, in recent years.

But Burgum’s quest might be the biggest stretch yet: a player in a glitzy, fast-paced industry becoming leader of a state where the cattle outnumber people, only about a dozen towns have a popu-lation bigger than 6,000 and many

families make their livelihood in agriculture and oil.

Though Burgum is a big name in tech hubs like Silicon Valley and Seattle, he isn’t well known in North Dakota outside of Fargo, the state’s largest city, where he lives. His opponent in the June 14 GOP primary election is a more typical fit for the job: low-key, longtime state legislator and Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, who’s patiently climbed the political ladder and has the party’s endorsement.

“I’ve been involved in the Leg-islature for 24 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said House Speaker Al Carlson, one of many Republicans lined up against the technology titan who wants to run the nation’s 47th-largest state. He said Burgum “is a smart guy” but doesn’t really understand how North Dakota works.

Burgum has infuriated the GOP-controlled Legislature with televi-sion ads that claim lawmakers squandered the state’s oil bounty before the bust hit two years ago. He claims he’s a proven job-creator who’s uniquely qualified to help diversify the state economy.

Gauging the race is difficult because there’s no independent polling. Mark Jendrysik, a political

science professor at the University of North Dakota, said most believe Stenehjem will win but Burgum’s wealth and fundraising clout — Gates kicked in $100,000 for his campaign — have made him a vi-able candidate.

In recent weeks, Burgum has been crisscrossing North Dakota to talk to mayors, farmers, ranch-ers and energy producers, hop-ing to convince voters they need someone with his background and big ideas.

“I want to know what’s working, what’s not working, what could be better,” said the 59-year-old Bur-gum, a trim man whose physique hasn’t changed much since he was a college football cheerleader.

Eighty-five-year-old Wally Bolte, a retired Bismarck busi-nessman and lifelong Republican, said he’d never heard of Burgum before the race, but might give him a chance.

“I’m a conservative but I don’t like conservatives who spend too much money,” Bolte said. “There has been bad money that we wasted.”

Stenehjem, 63, who did not re-spond to interview requests, claims in his own TV ads that Burgum “will say or pay anything to become

governor,” and insists that nothing is wrong with how the state has been run.

The race reflects the conflicting moods in North Dakota since the boom ended: Things are either pret-ty good or not so good depending on how you look at it. The six-year oil spree lured tens of thousands of workers and their families, and

drove pay for even menial jobs to unprecedented levels.

After it ended, the state saw a $1 billion budget shortfall, which required cutting government spend-ing and raiding a rainy day fund. Still, the fund has a healthy surplus, and North Dakota’s 3.2 percent un-employment rate would be the envy of most other states. (ap)

The median estimate from econo-mists surveyed by the National Asso-ciation for Business Economics calls for gross domestic product growth of only 1.8 percent, down from the 2.2 percent forecast in March. The outlook for next year calls for 2.3 percent growth.

The survey released Monday also shows the forecast for growth in corpo-rate profits swinging from a 2 percent gain in March, to negative 2 percent in June. Of the economists surveyed, 57 percent said that uncertainty over the election led them to reduce their expectations.

Doubts about the economy deep-ened Friday when the government reported that hiring in May slowed to a near-standstill. While unemployment slid from 5 percent to 4.7 percent, the lowest since November 2007, the

rate fell for a troubling reason: Nearly a half-million jobless Americans stopped looking for work and so were no longer counted as unemployed. Employers added just 38,000 jobs in May, the fewest in more than five years.

The surprisingly weak jobs report raised doubts that the Federal Reserve will increase short-term interest rates at its next meeting in mid-June or per-haps even at its subsequent meeting in July. Rates have hovered around zero for seven years and almost everyone had expected the Fed to grow more aggressive this summer.

Economic unease has shaken up the upcoming presidential race. Americans especially worried about the economy have been more likely to support out-sider candidates like Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The crucial California Democratic primary is Tuesday. Forty-nine percent of the economists in the NABE survey see a positive impact on economic growth this year from low oil prices, as opposed to 18 percent viewing it as a negative. For next year, 55 percent see the impact as positive and 7 percent as negative.

The economists expect home prices to increase 5 percent for the fourth quarter, unchanged from the March forecast. The median estimate is for the growth in home prices to slow to 4.3 percent next year, just above 4 percent forecast in March.

Another negative political fac-tor for economic growth: the rise of nationalist views such as trade protectionism around the world was chosen by 38 percent of those surveyed as the factor most likely to significantly reduce global growth in the next two years. Sixteen percent chose terrorism. The survey of 48 forecasters was taken between May 2 and May 17. (ap)

His new target is a political system run by aloof oligarchs. Mr. Basuki, 49, has vowed to run to stay in office in February as a political independent. His goal is to separate himself from the powerful national parties that have emerged during Indonesia’s transition to democracy, which began with the collapse of the military-backed dictatorship of President Suharto in 1998.

Mr. Basuki has long been con-sidered a political outsider, partly because he is a Christian and an ethnic Chinese steering the capi-tal of the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, and his decision to run without a party af-filiation has shaken the country’s political establishment.

Since Indonesia began holding free elections in the late 1990s, independent candidates have won lesser local government and leg-islative posts, but Mr. Basuki’s breakaway is by far the most sig-nificant. Jakarta is the country’s political, social and economic

center, accounting for 16 percent of the national gross domestic product in 2015, according to the country’s Central Statistics Bureau.

Most of the 10 parties that have seats in the country’s Parliament and cabinet are run by political dynasties, former Army generals or business tycoons who bankroll them. The rest are Islamic-based groups whose political ideology changes depending on which of the bigger parties they can latch onto in a coalition.

Regional-level politicians are mostly beholden to their politi-cal masters at national offices in Jakarta, who can accept or reject their planned candidacies even if they are doing well in opinion polls. And parties usually demand that candidates pay a fee to run and require them to finance their own campaigns, analysts say.

Mr. Basuki, in effect, has po-sitioned himself as an alternative to a national political system “that many in Jakarta are fed up with,”

said Charlotte Setijadi, a visiting fellow with the Indonesia studies program at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. “I think that this is an image that will serve him well for this election,” she said.

The governor, the grandson of a tin miner from Guangzhou, China, has a reputation for bluntness. He has his detractors, including squat-ters whose slum neighborhoods have been demolished to make way for public works projects and com-mercial developments, and political adversaries who have questioned a land reclamation project in North Jakarta that is under investigation by the country’s anticorruption agency.

But his style has won over many Jakartans, in particular younger vot-ers and lower-middle-class families. They have also been swayed by his administration’s policies, including fast-tracking infrastructure projects, among them a mass rapid transit system, the sprucing-up of a city of more than 10 million people with a small army of street sweepers and the institution of a “smart card” program to subsidize health care and education for the poor. TAIPEI - The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported on Monday the third imported case of a mosquito-borne Zika infection in Taiwan this year, this time involving an Indonesian national who arrived in Taiwan to work on June 1. The 22-year-old man from the East Java city of Mojokerto did not feel well on the plane on his way to Taiwan, and he arrived at Ka-ohsiung International Airport with a fever and red eyes, the CDC said.

He was tested for dengue fever on the spot, but the result was negative, the CDC said. He was then confirmed to be infected the Zika virus on Sun-day, according to the agency. The patient has recovered and will go to work on a Taiwanese deep sea fish-ing vessel that leaves Kaohsiung on Tuesday, the CDC said.

The case is the first Zika infection exported by Indonesia this year, the CDC said, noting that it has reported the case to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indonesian government and the World Health Organization. The CDC has also updated its travel advisory for Indonesia to alert based on its three-level system -- watch, alert and warning -- in order of severity.

The first two imported Zika cases were both Thai nationals from Udon Thani in northern Thailand. According to the CDC, adults show only mild symptoms after being infected with the Zika virus, but infected pregnant women could give birth to babies

with microcephaly -- a condition where a child is born with a smaller-than-normal head and impaired brain development.

It advised pregnant women and women planning to get pregnant to avoid traveling to Zika epidemic areas, and urged people to seek medical at-tention immediately if they display suspicious symptoms within two weeks after leaving a Zika epidemic area. The symptoms of the Zika virus include fevers, mild headaches, skin rashes, joint pain and conjunctivitis.

The CDC urged women returning from a Zika epidemic area to delay pregnancy for two months whether they display any suspicious symptoms or not.

For men returning from a Zika epidemic area without any suspicious symptoms, they should avoid sexual intercourse or use condoms for two months, and those suspected of being infected with the virus should avoid sex or use condoms for at least six months, the CDC said.

Also Monday, Kaohsiung’s De-partment of Health said a husband and wife who were reported as suspected Zika cases last month have been ruled out for the infection after two blood tests.

Instead, the couple, who traveled to Fiji and the Solomon Islands between April 23 and May 16, were confirmed to be infected with the Chikungunya virus, the department said. (ant)

AMBON - An earthquake mea-suring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the South Buru district town of Namrole in North Maluku Province early Monday morning.

The Meteorology, Climatol-ogy and Geophysics Agency here reported that the epicenter of the earthquake, which had occurred at 1:25 a.m. (East Indonesia Standard Time), was located at 4.63 degrees Southern Latitude and 125.74 de-grees Eastern Longitude, some 146 kilometers southwest of South Buru District.

However, the agency affirmed that the earthquake did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami, and hence, urged the local people to not panic. Indonesia is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

At 11 minutes past midnight (Central Indonesia Standard Time) on Monday, a 4.6-magnitude earth-quake had also jolted Parigi Mou-tong District in Central Sulawesi.

Last Thursday, a strong quake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale also rocked the western coastal area of Sumatra, destroying 2,663 houses

and 193 classrooms in the provinces of West Sumatra and Bengkulu, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).

Nearly 114 out of the 2,663 houses were severely damaged, 612 houses were moderately dam-aged, and 1,909 houses incurred light damage, Chief of the BNPB Information Center and Public Relations Sutopo Purwo Nugroho noted in a press statement released on Saturday.

The earthquake claimed the life of an 80-year-old man who died after suffering a heart attack. Eighteen others suffered injuries in the calamity, he added. “The man died when he felt the strong quake and then suffered a cardiac arrest,” he stated.

The 18 residents were injured due to the falling debris, while they were attempting to rush outdoors, Nugroho explained.

The Pesisir Selatan District in West Sumatra Province bore the maximum brunt of the June 2 quake as 93 houses and 29 classrooms were severely damaged, 578 houses and 74 classrooms were moderately damaged, and 1,801 houses suffered light damage. (ant)

NEW DELHI - Despite the on-set of the monsoon in several parts of the country, India continues to reel under a brutal heat wave that has now lasted more than two months and claimed dozens of lives.

On Monday, temperatures rose to more than 47°C (116.6°F) in the western state of Rajasthan — which also recorded India’s hottest day ever at 123.8°F last month — the Press Trust of India

The ICM poll of 1,741 people taken June 3-5 showed 48 percent would vote to leave, up from 47 percent a week earlier, while 43 percent would opt to stay, down 1 percentage point from a week earlier.

The YouGov poll of 3,495 people on June 1-3 showed 45 percent would opt to leave the EU, up from 40 percent in a comparable poll a month earlier, while 41 percent would opt to stay, down from 42 percent.

The poll showed 11 percent of voters were still undecided, down 2 percentage points from a month earlier.

Of the eight most recently pub-lished surveys, one opinion poll was tied, two showed In ahead and five have showed Out in the lead, including a TNS online poll published on Monday and two previous ICM polls published last Tuesday.

“There has been a couple of polls in a row all showing move-ment towards Leave - I suppose there might be finally some move-ment in the race,” Anthony Wells, director of political research at YouGov, said by telephone.

“ICM’s weekly tracker and indeed at least two other polls published in the last 24 hours, suggest a move to Leave might have occurred,” Martin Boon, director of research at ICM Un-limited, said in a statement.

Sterling fell below $1.44. The pound fell 0.9 percent to $1.4371, having traded at $1.4441 before the latest ICM poll was published. It had hit a three-week low of $1.4352 in early Asian trade.

Wells said the so called “Pur-dah” period which has prevented civil servants from making in-terventions in the referendum campaign since May 27 may have given Out campaigners such as Boris Johnson the space to push their arguments on immigration.

“The assumption is that im-migration has sort of cut through from the Leave campaign,” Wells said. “My best guess is that Pur-dah has allowed Leave to get into the argument and dominate when previously Remain had been dominating and pushing the argu-ment onto the economy.”

Britain’s EU Out campaign takes 4-5 percentage point lead

LONDON - The campaign for Britain to leave the Euro-pean Union has taken a 4-5 percentage point lead ahead of a June 23 referendum, according to online polls by ICM and YouGov, sending sterling towards three-week lows against the U.S. dollar.

into Britain running at its second highest level, despite pledges by Prime Minister David Cameron to bring the numbers down.

A TNS online poll of 1,213 people on May 19-23 showed 43 percent would vote to leave, 41

percent would vote to stay and 16 percent were undecided.

The TNS poll was adjusted for turnout, a change that turned a 3-percentage point lead for In into a 2 percentage point lead for Out.

“Leave supporters are currently more likely to actually turnout on the day which will be critical in determining the outcome,” Luke Taylor, head of social and politi-cal attitudes at TNS UK, said by email. (rtr)

“flawless tennis” over the last three sets of his 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-4 win over Andy Murray, Djokovic cracked his Roland Garros jinx at the 12th attempt -- and fourth final there -- to win the French Open.

It allowed the Serbian world number one to hold all four grand slam titles at the same time -- a milestone that is so difficult to reach that it had not been done by a man since Australian Rod Laver won the second of his calendar Grand Slams in 1969.

In an era when it is tough to keep track of the countless records achieved by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal -- who own 31 majors between them -- Djokovic man-aged to complete a feat that was

tantalisingly just out of reach for his rivals-in-chief.

“It’s one of the ultimate chal-lenges that you have as a ten-nis player. I’m very proud, very thrilled,” he said on becoming the third man after Don Budge and Laver to hold the Wimbledon, U.S., Australian and French Open titles simultaneously.

Federer had two attempts at completing four in a row -- in 2006 and 2007 -- but each time he was thwarted in the French Open final by Nadal.

The Spaniard similarly arrived at the 2011 Australian Open as the holder of three grand slam titles but fell in the quarter-finals.

Despite all their success, Federer and Nadal, who are among eight

men to have completed a career grand slam, never managed to win the Australian-French Opens back-to-back.

With Djokovic having achieved that benchmark, he is well placed to complete something no man has ever achieved -- the Golden Slam of four majors and Olympic gold in the same year.

So is that something that can be done?

“I don’t want to sound arrogant, but I really think everything is achievable in life,” said Djokovic, who has now contested six suc-cessive grand slam finals, winning five.

It certainly is a possibility be-cause nine-times French Open champion Nadal, having struggled with injuries, is no longer the force he was, while 34-year-old Federer was a no show at the French Open after failing to recover from a back problem. (rtr)

OAKLAND - The Golden State Warriors moved into a commanding position in the NBA Finals with a 110-77 romp over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, the defending champions easing to victory in front of a delighted home crowd.

Draymond Green was the lat-est Warrior to shine as the team’s All-Star backcourt was afforded another quiet game, the power for-ward scoring a game-high 28 points as Golden State opened a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

MVP Stephen Curry recorded 18 points and nine rebounds but played just 25 minutes and spent much of the night cheering from the bench while his team ran rampant against a lethargic and outclassed opposition.

“What we’ve done the last few years, everybody, every night has an impact,” Curry told reporters. “You don’t know where it’s going to come from any given night. That’s why we’re in this position.”

Cleveland’s misery was com-pounded in the third quarter when forward Kevin Love was forced to leave the game feeling dizzy after taking a blow to the head in the second quarter. Love has been placed in concussion protocol, the Cavs said.

Cavaliers talisman LeBron James finished with 19 points, nine assists and eight rebounds but did not play in the fourth quarter once the Warriors had opened a big lead by the end of the third.

“They beat us pretty good to-night,” James said. “We understand the moment we’re in. It’s not every year you get an opportunity to be in this situation. We have to bear down.”

The Cavs return home to Cleve-land for Game Three on Wednesday when they will try to make their first telling impact in what has been a disappointing mismatch to date.

Secondary scorer Kyrie Irving managed just 10 points in Game Two as Cleveland shot only 35 percent.

The Cavaliers were supposed to be better prepared for a Finals rematch with the Warriors as they entered healthier and more tal-ented than the hobbling team that lost 4-2 a year ago, but they have been destroyed in the opening two contests.

Golden State has now beaten Cleveland seven straight times, dat-ing back to last season’s Finals.

The latest match-up was all but decided midway through the third, when Curry went to the bench due to foul trouble and with the War-riors leading by 10.

Golden State barely missed a beat and pushed the lead to 20 heading to the fourth and never looked back.

Reserve Shaun Livingston was Golden State’s top scorer in the series opener and in Game Two they once again flashed a balanced arsenal of play-makers with Klay Thompson adding 17 points. (rtr)

That ignominious moment came just after the Chilean anthem was, embarrassingly, played instead of the Uruguay anthem in the pre-game ceremonies. Copa America 2016 blamed the mistake on “a hu-man error.”

“It was a lack of respect, nothing more than that,” Pereira said. After some tense moments, the late scoring surge finally gave the loud, rowdy, vastly pro-Mexico crowd of 60,025 the victory it expected in the Copa America opener between teams consid-ered the two best in Group C.

“It’s step by step,” Mexico’s Andres Guardado said. “We have the capability. We have a lot of games to go but we have to continue on the same path and know that we are in a good spot but have work to do.”

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio knows his team will be the “home” team throughout the com-petition.

“We have to learn to play as protagonists (crowd favorites),” he said, “and this is how we should play in America.”

Marquez’s close-range shot in the 84th minute broke a 1-1 tie and Herrera’s header from just outside the net added another score in extra time. Marquez’s score came 10 minutes after Diego Godin’s header tied it for Uruguay at 1-1. “They struggled and tied the game,” Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. “We missed chances and that’s just soccer. Mexico hap-pened to get the goals and it’s a just result.”

Mexico, which never has won the Copa America, has not lost in 20 consecutive games. Uruguay, a 15-time Copa America champion, was without its best player, Luis Suarez, who injured a hamstring in a match two weeks ago. Marquez’s go-ahead goal came after a pass slipped through his legs and to a teammate, who sent the ball back to him for a wide-open shot at the net. “I got the pass and I controlled it well,” he said, “and put a good shot on it.”

Guardado and Uruguay’s Matius Vecino drew red cards and will have to sit out a match. Uruguay was down to 10 players after Vecino left just before halftime after kicking Mexico’s Jesus Manuel Co-rona in the knee.

But despite being at a man disadvantage, Uruguay went on the attack earlier in the second half and, after several near misses, tied it at 1-1. Guardado drew his second yellow card to set up a free kick for Uruguay. He thought it was an unwarranted call.

“The second one, that happens in soccer 20,000 times,” Guardado said. “A player trying to start

s o m e -t h i n g b y

talking to the officials. He hit me and I had to defend my-self.”

On the free kick, Carlos San-chez sent the ball into the goal box where, in the match’s 74th minute, Godin went up in a crowd and headed it into the right corner of the net. It was the first goal Mexico had allowed in its last 252 minutes of play. The celebrating Uruguayan players were briefly pelted by water bottles from the crowd.

Early on, the own goal came after a near-perfect center pass from just inside the right side-line by Guardado. Pereira and Herrera both went up for it. Herrera missed but Pereira, try-ing to head the ball over the net, instead knocked it to the left of goalkeeper Fernando Muslera and Mexico led 1-0.

In the pre-match ceremony foul-up, Uruguay’s players stood silently, many with blank stares, as the wrong anthem was played. “We sincerely apologize to the Uruguayan Federation, the Uru-guay National Team, to the people of Uruguay and to the fans for this mistake,” Copa America 2016 said in its statement. “We will work with all parties involved to ensure such an error does not occur again.” Uruguay faces Venezuela in Philadelphia on Thursday night.(ap)

BARCELONA - Argentina’s Lionel Messi has unfin-ished business going into the Centenary Copa America that is being staged in the United States with the Barcelona star keen to help his nation capture a first major title in 23 years.

After finishing runners-up at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and at last year’s Copa America in Chile, Argentina are favourites to lift the Copa America for the second time in their history and first since 1993.

“This Copa America is a very special tournament for me and more so after losing last year’s final. That is why I want to win it for Argentina,” Messi, whose 37 goals in 45 appearances were key to Barca’s La Liga and King’s Cup double winning campaign in 2015-16, said to El Mundo Deportivo.

The Argentina captain hurt his back in an international friendly against Honduras on May 27 and is unlikely to start on Monday in his country’s opener against Chile at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

He has reassured his fans, however, that the injury is not serious. “I feel better,” he said.

Coach Gerardo Martino was not at the helm of Argen-tina at the World Cup but did hold the reins last year when they lost 4-1 on penalties to Chile.

That result led La Nacion newspaper to write at the time: “It seems a nightmare without end, a curse that never ends. The national team continues without winning a title and it’s already 22 years.” Argentina also take on Panama and Bolivia in Group D.

They will rely heavily on five-times World Player of the Year Messi, who has scored 50 goals in 107 appearances

for his country and will play in his seventh major tournament with the national team.

The 28-year-old forward goes into the Copa having to put a difficult week behind him. Messi had to travel to Spain last week to testify in a Barcelona court regarding his trial for alleged tax evasion.(rtr)

NANJING - Chinese retail giant Suning Commerce Group Co Ltd has agreed to buy nearly 70 percent of famed Italian soccer club Inter Milan for 270 million euros ($307 million), the highest-profile takeover of a European team so far by a Chinese firm.

Suning confirmed the deal on Monday at a joint news conference with Inter Milan executives, including current majority owner and president Erick Thohir, in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing.

With President Xi Jinping an avid supporter of soccer, Suning’s deal to take control of Inter Milan, which last won the European Champions League in 2010, is the latest step in a plan to create a global sports empire stretching from soccer clubs to online broadcasting.

A person familiar with the matter told Reuters earlier that Suning will buy a 68.55 percent stake in the Italian club. Thohir will cut his stake in the club to 31 percent, while former president Massimo Moratti will sell off his entire stake in the club of just under 30 per-cent, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the matter was confidential.

In a statement, the soccer club said Thohir will stay on as presi-dent and become the sole minority shareholder in Inter Milan, while Moratti will exit the club.(rtr)

Pep Guardiola is a “proven winner” who will take Man-chester City to a “whole new level”, the Premier League club’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has said. Guardiola, who left Ger-man champions Bayern Munich to take the reins at City, begins his three-year spell as manager at the Etihad stadium in July.

The Spaniard is one of the most decorated coaches in the game following his trophy-laden spells at Bayern and Barcelona, with whom he won the Champi-

ons League twice.“I’m absolutely excited about

Pep joining our team,” Emirati Al Mubarak said in an interview posted on City’s website (www.mcfc.co.uk). “He’s a winner ... his record at Bayern Munich, his record at Barcelona, I think speaks for itself.

“We are getting a proven win-ner ... someone who I think will be an incredible asset to Man-chester City. And I have no doubt that he will transform our team to a whole new level.”

Guardiola replaces Manuel Pellegrini, who guided the club to one Premier League title and two (Capital One) League Cups in his three years in charge.

Mubarak expressed disap-pointment at the Chilean’s final season, despite the club finishing fourth in the league, reaching the Champions League semi-finals for the first time and winning the League Cup.

(rtr)

(rtr)

(ant)

(ap)

After coming down from the Klungkung terminal, they will be directly led to the Klungkung Monument and re-sumed to Klungkung Palace to see a collection of the golden age of the Klungkung kingdom. Fur-thermore, travelers will head for Puputan Klungkung Square and continue to Smarajaya Museum, Taman Gili and Kertagosa. Before returning to terminal, travelers will stop in the Semara-pura Art Market as the center of souvenirs and handicrafts of Klungkung. (dwa)

(kmb)

(rah)

(ap)

The Ukrainian border guard service reported on Saturday that the unnamed 25-year-old had been arrested with an arsenal of weapons and explosives in-

cluding rocket launchers and Kalash-nikov assault rifles in his vehicle.

SBU chief Vasyl Hrytsak said the man had made contact with armed

groups in Ukraine with the aim of buying weapons and explosives.

His intended targets included Jew-ish and Muslim places of worship and buildings involved with the soc-cer tournament, Gritsak said. French government administration buildings, including those dealing with tax col-lection, were also a target.

“The Frenchman spoke negatively about his government’s actions, mass immigration, the spread of Islam and globalisation, and also talked about plans to carry out several terrorist at-tacks,” Gritsak told journalists.

“The SBU was able to prevent a series of 15 acts of terror (planned) for the eve and during the Euro soccer

championship,” he said. A French for-eign ministry spokesman confirmed that a Frenchman has been arrested in Ukraine and said the ministry was in contact with Ukrainian authorities.

Meanwhile a police source in Paris said French police were sceptical about the affair. The person in ques-tion was not known to either police or intelligence services and police had not found anything incriminating in a search of his home in the Meuse region of France, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Security officials in Europe are on high alert after Islamist militants killed 130 people in Paris last November and suicide bombers killed 32 people at Belgium’s main international airport and on the Brussels metro in March.

The United States has warned its citizens of possible further attacks in Europe, saying targets could include Euro 2016 which opens in France on Friday. Gritsak said the SBU had sold deactivated weapons to the suspect af-ter they found out that he was looking to purchase the arms. (rtr)

VA R I O U S criminal cases occurred at ho-tel, particularly in the South

Badung. They range from theft,

fraud, snatching to murder. Such cases definitely disrupt the im-age of Bali security. Hotel must be sterile from the presence of people having no interests. On that account, police often advise to tighten security starting from

the hotel gates. Moreover, terror-ist acts and ISIS are still looming this island.

The recent case was snatching experienced by a student, Lisa Mega Surya Putra, 23, at the lobby of the Hotel Horison in South

Kuta. The hotel security system is questionable because the culprit could get into the hotel lobby to commit its action. When asking for confirmation about the incident via telephone, receptionist of the Hotel Horison, Jordi, suggested contact-

ing chief security for more details about the incident. He admitted not to know about the incident because he just worked.
