“This has all the elements -- lying, corruption, blackmail -- at the highest levels of government by the biggest newspaper in London,” Clooney said, in a statement released by Sony Pictures. “And the fact that it’s true is the best part. Nick is a brave and stubborn reporter and we consider it an honor to put his book to film,” he added.

Michael De Luca of Columbia Pic-tures added: “As the son of a journalist, George has a sharp interest in the role journalism plays in all of our lives.

“With ‘Hack Attack,’ George will explore the dark side of that world, a

business where all of the rules of journal-ism are broken in the race for an easy and ever-larger payday,” he added.

Shooting on the new movie will begin next year, Sony said. No release date has been set.

Davies spent six years investigating News Corporation and its subsidiary, News International, concluding that they amounted to a world where “Everything is for sale. Nobody is exempt.”

The phone-hacking trial was one of the most expensive in English legal his-tory, spotlighting the close ties between the Murdoch empire and politicians and

the no-holds-barred methods of Britain’s tabloid press. Those affected included the then Kate Middleton, who is now married to Prince William, James Bond star Daniel Craig and actor Jude Law.

Murdoch shut the News of the World in 2011 after it emerged that what was then Britain’s biggest selling paper had illegally accessed the voicemails of a murdered schoolgirl.

In July this year, prosecutors announced charges against Neil Wallis, the paper’s former deputy editor, and ex-features editor Jules Stenson. The announcement comes three weeks after former News of the World editor and Downing Street communications chief Andy Coulson was jailed for 18 months after a lengthy phone hacking trial. Another former editor of the tabloid, Rebekah Brooks, was cleared of all charges, along with her husband and three other people.

Two-time Academy Award winner Clooney is most well known for roles

ranging from 2001’s “Ocean’s Eleven” and its sequels to last year’s Oscar-winning “Grav-ity.” But in the last de-cade the heartthrob actor has moved behind the camera to direct a num-ber of movies including 2005’s “Good Night, and Good Luck,” 2011’S “The Ides of March” and this year’s “The Monu-ments Men.”

Clooney will also serve as co-producer on “Hack Attack,” along-side Grant Heslov with whom he has worked on several previous films through their Smoke-house Pictures produc-tion company.

LOS ANGELES - “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara is the highest-paid US TV actress for the third year in a row, earning some $37 million, according to a 2014 list published Wednesday.

The 42-year-old earned significantly more than the top paid actor, Ashton Kutcher, who made some $26 million, according to Forbes magazine, known for celebrity and other rich lists.

The Colombian-born actress -- who literally stood on a pedestal at this year’s Emmy awards -- reportedly makes $325,000 an episode for “Mod-

ern Family,” but earns much more from endorsements including being the face of Diet Pepsi.

She is also the co-founder of multi-million dollar talent management and marketing firm Latin World Entertain-ment, while earlier this year she launched her own perfume.

In second place is “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” star Mariska Har-gitay, whose estimated earnings total $13 million, while Kaley Cuoco of “The Big Bang Theory” took home an estimated $11 million for third place.

Tied in fourth spot were “The Good Wife” star Julianna Margulies who

earned $10 million, as did Ellen Pompeo of “Grey’s Anatomy” and Cobie Smul-ders of “How I Met Your Mother.”

Smulders’ co-star on “How I Met Your Mother” Alyson Hannigan came in fifth with $9.5 million, followed by comediennes Amy Poehler at $7 million and Mindy Kaling at $6.5 million.

Eighth was also tied, with “Scandal” star Kerry Washington, “The New Girl”’s Zooey Deschanel and Courteney Cox of “Friends” all taking home an estimated $6 million. Claire Danes of “Homeland” earned $5 million, while “Girls” star Lena Dunham rounded out the top 10 with earnings of $3.5 million.

LOS ANGELES - George Clooney is to direct a film about the Brit-ish phone hacking scandal, the studio behind the project announced Wednesday. “Hack Attack” will be based on the book of the same name by Guardian journalist Nick Davies about the hacking scandal surround-ing Rupert Murdoch’s news empire, which triggered the demise of its weekly News of the World.

NUSA DUA - Hol iday Inn Resort Bali Benoa hosted three days of Mass Recruitment at Seko-lah Tinggi Pariwisata Bali (STP Bali) from Thursday 28th August to Saturday 30th August. Local professionals were invited to be interviewed by Senior Manage-ment including the Resort General Manager, for all levels across all departments.

The three day recruitment start-ed with a day dedicated to the local community and graduating

students and alumni of STP Bali. This was followed by two more days opened to the public.

“We were delighted with the outcome of our Mass Recruitment” says General Manager Simon

Morley. He continues that “It was a great opportunity for the

team and I to meet talentedprofessionals who are looking

for an opportunity to develop and be a part of the Holiday Inn

Resort Bali Benoa pre- opening team. We would like to thank all those who took the time to apply as well as our sister properties, Holiday Inn Resort Baruna Bali and InterContinental Bali Resort for their support”.

Juliana Ekaputra Director of Hu-man Resources, said “We believe in the local talent that we have

in our communities. By prior-itising our recruitment on the local population we are also supporting the local economy”. He continues that “It was wonderful to see the level of response that we received, with applicants coming from Sura-baya, Jakarta and Malang, our team completed just over 1100 inter-views over the three days”.

According to Made Gianyar, the realization of the airport develop-ment plan in Kubutambahan region would certainly have an impact on the development of Bangli in several aspects. If the plan could actually be realized, the public access from Southern Bali to Northern Bali pass-ing through Bangli would turn more crowded. “Actually I tend to support the development of airport in Kubu-tambahan area, Northern Bali. It can revive the access between Northern Bali and Southern Bali through Bangli compared to the reclamation. The reclamation will further burden Southern Bali. Not to mention that the development will take a lot of sand, so the quarry location of Bangli will be damaged,” he explained.

Thus, added Gianyar, if it was an

option, he would prefer the construc-tion of the airport in Northern Bali. “Yes, if it can be an option. Definitely, we support the governor and central government to accelerate the airport development in Northern Bali,” he added.

Earlier, the ad interim Chairman of the Bangli House, Ngakan Kutha Parwata, also acknowledged that the airport development plan to be carried out in Northern Bali would not only be fresh air for the people of Buleleng, but also for the people of Bangli. If it could really happen, indirectly Bangli would have the impact. Bangli that was quite devoid of development all this time would be visited by a variety of investments, especially tourism investment.

However, behind the fresh

breeze, Ngakan Kuta asked the Bangli government to selectively choose the investors that would invest in the county with cool air because Bangli was the upstream region of Bali, as a supplier of water to other counties.

Any incoming investment, said Kutha Parwata, should keep the en-vironment. Everything related to the investment plan had to be carefully socialized to the community, so as not to result in the pros and cons. “It must be really selective. Otherwise, we are afraid if it will reap controversies like what happens in the Southern Bali. We do not want it to happen,” he said while adding that his party did not go up against the investor, but just asked the government to be really selective in choosing investors. (ina)

DENPASAR - Reiner Gloekner, 59, a German national arrested a thief on Jalan Tirtaning, Sanur, South Denpasar, Friday (Aug 29). The culprit was none other than the suspect Moh. Nur Khalim, 30, from Jember, East Java. After the case was developed by police, the suspect in fact had taken action at 9 scenes in Sanur, North Kuta and West Denpasar.

“Most of his victims were foreign citizens. Besides, the suspect also broke in an empty house,” said the Chief of South Denpasar Police, Nanang Pri-hasmoko, Tuesday (Sep 3).

Disclosure of the case began approximately at 10:45 a.m. where the victim came to a proj-ect site on Jalan Tirtaning, Sanur. Furthermore, the victim living at the area of Takmung village, Klungkung, put his backpack on the table of security station at the project. “At the time, the victim had the need to urinate. After putting his bag, he came into the bathroom,” added Nanang.

When going out of the bath-room, the victim saw a man

taking his bag. The victim im-mediately called out for help while chasing the thief. “Inciden-tally the patrol police personnel passed at the location and then joined to chase the suspect. GIANYAR - The community of Gianyar County should raise the awareness of the occurrence of disasters such as fires, land-slides to tornado. It is based on consideration that from January to August 2014 a total of more than one hundred disasters are recorded to threaten the region known as the center of the arts. Total losses are estimated to reach billions of rupiahs.

Based on the data of the Gian-yar Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the disaster occurred from January to August 2014 reached 101 cases. Fire was the most frequent disaster, amount-ing to 41 cases. Then, landslide occurred at 30 locations and tor-nado amounted to 30 incidents. In addition, flooding also occurred for several times as well as the case of

drowning in the sea.The Head of Gianyar Regional

Disaster Mitigation Agency, AA Oka Digjaya, said on Wednes-day (Sep 3) that his party would seek to intensively optimize the disaster prevention. Within four months ahead, his party predicted the three subdistricts such as Ubud, Tegallalang and Sukawati would be prone to landslides. “We will increase alertness, al-ways give a warning and update information,” he said.

Responding to the high rates of fire incidents, the government would add two fire stations, re-spectively in Ubud and Sukawati. Meanwhile, two trucks would be added in 2015. “Nowadays, we have six units of fire truck and two more units will be added in 2015. Later, we will have totally eight units of fire truck,” he said. More than 100 designers are scheduled to show their spring-summer 2015 collections in the Mercedes-Benz tents at Lincoln Center and other New York venues. The eight-day event kicks off the season, with the industry moving on to London, followed by Milan and Paris, when the New York shows conclude.

At Wednesday night’s “Salute the Runway,” little black dresses took on a military twist as female veterans took to the runway in frocks designed by Donna Karan, Carmen Marc Valvo, Mara Hoff-man and eight other designers.

Several of the women jauntily saluted as they finished strutting the catwalk; Capt. Kelly Smith, a helicopter pilot in the Air National Guard from Los Angeles, danced down the runway in a full-length Mara Hoffman gown. The show was part of an initiative to raise awareness of the fashion and style challenges these veterans face when transitioning back to civilian life.

At Athleta’s show earlier in the day, a flying female tethered to

wires did some air running above a stark white stage at the activewear company’s first-ever — and high energy — show. She was joined by break-dancers, yoga stretchers and mini-trampoline jumpers in printed and solid tights, running pants, athletic bras, sweatshirts and a new dry-down technology the brand has just put into quilted vests and bomber jackets.

The idea, Athleta officials said, is to give active women more op-tions for all-day dressing as they transition from workout to grocery shopping to school pickup or the office.

“Her life is always constantly in motion and so she wants a more versatile product that is not overtly fashion or overtly activewear,” se-nior design director Nancy Taylor said backstage of the company’s core customer.

Versatile performance wear is on trend as more fashion houses exper-iment with high-tech fabrics. One sound example for Athleta is the company’s city jogger pant, which would transition well through eve-

ning if paired with the right top. On the performance side, the company has put stretch insulation into jack-ets and other outerwear for warmth and better mobility in the arms, said Athleta President Nancy Green.

The typical Athleta customer

“wants to be relevant. She cares about style but she doesn’t want to change her clothes five times a day,” Green said.

Soft pants are a big part of the trend, she said. The city jogger pant is high-stretch and lightweight,

made of a fabric Athleta had already been using for shorts. And they’ve added more lightweight jackets to last season’s moto quilted down, us-ing a proprietary feather treatment Green said will stay dry against sweat.

Surakusuma remarked on Thurs-day that the minister of tourism for the government of Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, and Jusuf Kalla (Jokowi-JK government) should be the right person who has mastery in technical and non-technical matters in order to boost foreign tourist arrivals by two folds in the next five years.

“The tourism minister in the Jokowi-JK government should have the capability to improve the perfor-mance of the tourism industry since it is not an easy task to increase the number of tourist arrivals from 10 million to 20 million in five years,” noted Surakusuma, the director of PT Pacific World Nusantara, in Denpasar.

The Jokowi-JK government plans to double the number of tourist ar-rivals in the next five years from 10 million to 20 million or an average annual increase of 20 percent.

He emphasized that the tourism minister must be a professional and experienced person who is able to judge the tourism potential of each

region in Indonesia. He pointed out that such a minister

must be able to work on promoting the country’s tourism potential in markets abroad and drawing foreign tourists to visit Indonesia.

“This is important because due to the lack of supporting facilities and infrastructure, not many regions in Indonesia are ready to welcome foreign tourists,” stated Surakusuma, better known as Gus Lolec.

Therefore, he was of the viewpoint that the tourism minister should have adequate promotional funds to en-able him or her to make a strategic breakthrough in the global tourism industry.

According to him, promotional efforts abroad must also be supported by professionals who are able to lure foreign tourists to visit Indonesia.

“Competition among countries in attracting tourist arrivals is very tight, so the minister of tourism should make a strategic breakthrough and work hard to increase the number of tourist visits,” he added.

DENPASAR - Bank Indonesia (BI) office for Bali and Nusa Teng-gara provinces launched electronic money as part of non-cash national movement at Udayana University (Unud) on Thursday.

“We hope students can familiar-ize the public (with this electronic money) so they will be eager to use non-cash transactions,” head of the Bank Indonesia office Benny Siswanto said at the Udayana Uni-versity campus.

BI is teaming up with state-owned lenders BNI, Mandiri and BRI as well as privately-run BCA in carrying out the program, he said.

The program will be carried out in Bali in stages, Benny said asking the management of the banks to ex-

pand non-cash transaction services in the tourist island.

The electronic money looks the same as debit card. Holders of the electronic money can refill the card at automated teller machines (ATMs) operated by the banks or electronic debit card (EDC) machines at commercial shops ap-pointed by the banks.

Unud Rector Prof Dr I Ketut Suastika stated the electronic mon-ey will make it easier for the people to conduct transactions because they no longer need to bring a large sum of banknotes.

“Many people now tend to make electronic transactions. The number of Unud students and lecturers which reaches more than 25 thou-sand and two thousand respectively is the potential target of the non-cash movement,” he said.

Lennon was eager to at least delay his deportation so Ono could fight for custody of her 9-year-old daughter by a previous husband. Lennon and Ono approached Leon Wildes, a young lawyer who knew his immigration law. In time, the effort to extend Lennon’s stay in the United States would become an integral part of the legal foundation the Obama administration relied on in 2012 to set up a program that has deferred the deportation of more than 580,000 immigrants who entered the country illegally as children.

“All I can say is, John Lennon is smiling in his grave,” Wildes said in an interview. “He helped accom-plish that.” The extent of Obama’s legal authority is now central to the White House deliberations over what else Obama can do — and when — without congressional ac-tion to reduce deportations and give many of the 11 million immigrants

illegally in the United States the ability to stay and work without fear of being removed.

Until the Lennon case, the Immi-gration and Naturalization Service had not acknowledged it used its own discretion in deciding whom to deport. But through the Freedom of Information Act, Wildes discovered 1,843 instances in which the INS had invoked such prosecutorial dis-cretion as part of a secret program for “non-priority” cases.

Once the program was revealed, the INS had no choice but to con-cede its existence and issued of-ficial guidance on how it would be applied. “The remarkable work of Leon Wildes really led to the old agency of INS making its policy about prosecutorial discretion and non-priority status public for the first time,” said Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia, a law professor at The Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law who has

written extensively about executive powers in immigration law.

Immigration lawyers and many legal scholars like Wadhia argue Obama draws his authority to act from a broad range of sources, from the Constitution to immigra-tion laws to government regula-tions.

Critics like John Yoo and Robert Delahunty, both of whom worked in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel during President George W. Bush’s administration, argue that the president doesn’t have such broad latitude and that prosecutorial discretion can only be applied narrowly.

For Wildes, now 81 years old and still at work on immigration cases, the years spent with Lennon and Ono were a defining time. (The “hold” music on his office phone plays Lennon’s “Imagine.”) Like a good lawyer, he tried a variety of ways to lengthen Lennon’s stay.

TOKYO — Japan is seeking international support for its plans to hunt minke whales in the Ant-arctic Ocean next year by scaling down the whaling research pro-gram the U.N. top court rejected earlier this year, fisheries officials said Wednesday.

Whaling for research pur-poses is exempt from the 1986 international ban on commercial whaling, and Japan has conducted hunts in the Antarctic and Pacific on that basis. But in March, the In-ternational Court of Justice ruled the Antarctic program wasn’t scientific as Japan had claimed and must stop.

Japan’s Fisheries Agency is working on a revised program to be submitted to the International Whaling Commission’s scientific committee around November. The agency will announce its intention and basic plan at the Sept. 15-18 IWC meeting in Slovenia and will continue to finalize catch targets and other details over the next few weeks.

The new program will address the problems cited by the court, an agency official said on condition of anonymity, citing department rules. The court said Japan’s Antarctic program produced little actual research and failed to

explain why it needed to kill so many whales for the study.

Approval from the IWC’s scientific committee isn’t manda-tory, but any attempt by Japan to resume whaling would be likely to face intense scrutiny over whether it complies with the court ruling.

Japan also plans to no longer hunt fin and humpback whales, after hardly catching any of those two species in the past nine years.

After steadily fulfilling its Ant-arctic catch target of 440 for 17 years, Japan more than doubled it to 935 minke whales in 2005. It came close to the target only the following year and has fallen since, mainly because the demand for whale meat has declined sig-nificantly at home.

The government also has had to keep spending tax money to sustain whaling operators. Violent protests by anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd also contributed to the declining catch.

During the 2013-14 season, Japan caught 251 minke whales in the Antarctic, or just a quarter of its target, and 224 others in the northern Pacific program, which isn’t as controversial. Japan also hunts more than 160 whales along its coast, outside of the IWC oversight.

Japan is seeking to resume Antarctic whaling next year under a revised research program that would involve fewer killings and only minke whale, following the U.N. top court’s rejection to an earlier program, fisheries officials said Wednesday, Sept. 4.

WASHINGTON — The argument over President Barack Obama’s legal authority to defer deportations began 42 years ago with a bit of hashish, a dogged lawyer and John Lennon and Yoko Ono. President Richard Nixon was seeking re-election and Lennon was in New York facing deportation from a Nixon administration eager to disrupt the famous ex-Beatle’s planned concert tour and voter registration drive. The case hinged on Lennon’s 1968 conviction for possession of “cannabis resin” in London.

TABANAN - A single accident occurred again on Denpasar-Gilimanuk skull track, pre-cisely on the ascending road at Lumajang ham-let, Samsam village, Kerambitan subdistrict, Wednesday (Sep 3). A Fuso truck with license plate P 9187 UV carrying excessive freight rolled over because it was not strong enough to pass through the ascending section. Although it claimed no fatalities, the consumer goods in the truck scattered onto the road and slightly disrupted the traffic in the lane. Moreover, posi-tion of the truck body hindered the traffic.

From information gathered at the scene, the truck driven by Sastro Irawan, 33, from Banyuwangi and Mohammad Noah was traveling from Gilimanuk to Denpasar. At that time, in front of the Fuso truck speeded an unidentified medium truck (Colt Diesel).

When arriving at the scene at 5:00 a.m., exactly on the ascending section, the Colt Diesel truck in front of it slowed down. As a result, the Fuso truck reduced speed. Since the freight was overloaded, the Fuso truck was not strong enough to climb the ascending section and finally slid down. The body of Fuso truck almost hindered the entire road. As a result, it kindled traffic jams. During the evacuation process, police were forced to implement an open and closed queue.

From the results of investigation made by the officers of Tabanan Police Traffic Affairs, the rollover of the truck was alleged to hap-pen as the truck having the tonnage of 20 tons was loaded with 25 tons. “Allegedly the truck tonnage exceeds the limit, so the driver could not control the speed at the ascending section,” said Operations Division Chief of the Tabanan Police Traffic Affairs, Bagus Antara, when met on the sidelines of the truck evacuation. Related to the overloaded freight, the truck driver also admitted that he was actually car-rying the freight with the tonnage exceeding the limit. (kmb28)

The crossing service provid-ers receiving the safety device assistance included the owner of Restu Kembar Dewata Express, Celebrity, Gangga Express, Walet Sari Cooperative, Boroq Express, Isnul Bahar, Retu Dirgahayu Putra Kembar, Segara Susu, Sri Merta Sari, Barakah, Cahaya Ali, Mutiara, Tegar, Panca Putra, Lembongan Tour and the Nusantara. All the safety devices were given by the regent in collaboration with PT Jasa Raharja (Persero) of Bali Branch.

The Head of Klungkung Trans-portation, Communications and Informatics Agency, Nengah Su-kasta, amidst the conferment of such assistance just hoped that the assistance of life jacket and life-buoy could be placed at the most accessible place by passengers. So, in case that any incident hap-pened during the crossing it could be easily reached by passengers. “We expect the crossing service providers to put the safety devices

at the most easily reached place. Safety of passengers is the most important thing to give the atten-tion,” he said.

Similar opinion was expressed by Regent Nyoman Suwirta. He also appealed to the operator, car-rier or owner of the boats providing crossing services to comply with the rules of voyage. In addition, the regent also requested the boat entre-preneurs not to transport passengers and goods exceeding the carrying capacity because it was very danger-ous during the crossing. “We also asked the Transportation Agency to address this matter so as to avoid any unwanted incidents during the voyage,” expected Suwirta.

Related to the assistance, the re-gent also reminded of the sea trans-portation providers to always give a safety device. Thus, the safety and comfort of passenger could be well maintained. “Take advantage of this assistance for the sake of passenger safety,” he said. (119)

SEMARAPURA - Safety of passengers in the use of sea transporta-tion at traditional harbor got serious attention from the Klungkung Regent, I Nyoman Suwirta. As evidence, on Wednesday (Sep 3), the regent from Lembongan was providing safety device assistance in the form of life jacket and lifebuoy to providers of crossing services on the Tri Buana Beach, Kusamba village, Dawan. The assistance amounted to 50 pieces of life jacket and 40 pieces of lifebuoy. All the safety device assistances were submitted to 16 providers of crossing services by boat to Nusa Penida.

BERLIN — Samsung unveiled two smartphones and a virtual-reality headset Wednesday in a bid to draw consumer attention before its fierce rival, Apple, announces its holiday lineup next week. Samsung, whose phones have gotten progres-sively larger each year, has decided that bigger isn’t better this time. Instead, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 retains the 5.7-inch screen of last year’s model, but adds a speedier processor, a better screen, better cameras and software to fit more people into selfies.

The announcement at the IFA trade show in Berlin comes as Samsung’s smartphone sales fell 4 percent in the second quarter, com-pared with a year ago, even though it launched the Galaxy S5 in April. According to IDC, Samsung’s share of the global smartphone market fell 7 percentage points to 25 percent.

“Samsung needs the Galaxy Note 4 to be a hit,” said Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight. “It has to make up some of the ground it lost as a result of the relatively poor reception to the all-plastic Galaxy S5.”

Wood said the new metal-based design of the Note 4 could offer the kind of premium look and feel that Samsung needs to compete with Apple’s much-anticipated

iPhone 6.Apple’s iPhone 6 is widely ex-

pected to have a 4.7-inch screen, up from the current 4 inches, to make

it more competitive with larger smartphones made by Samsung and other companies. There has been speculation that Apple may also

unveil an iPhone with a 5.5-inch screen, putting it in competition with the Note 4.

A computerized wristwatch

might come from Apple, too, com-peting with Samsung’s own smart-watches.

Besides the Note 4, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Note Edge with a side display for quick access to the camera controls, news and frequently used apps.

Ian Fogg, an analyst who fol-lows the mobile industry at IHS in London, said the side display distinguishes Samsung’s phone from others, but Samsung will need to persuade app developers to take advantage of it.

Samsung’s earlier attempt to introduce finger levitation, allow-ing users to hover their fingers over a device and not touch the screen, didn’t take off. Developers didn’t build the technology into their apps.

But some of those who got their hands on the Edge at the IFA show were enthusiastic.

“Users often don’t know what they want until they see it, and I think this will be one of those features,” said Martin Gicheru, managing editor of Techweez, a technology news site based in Nai-robi, Kenya.

Alongside its new phones, Sam-sung launched an eye-catching virtual-reality headset called Gear VR. It uses sensors to gauge the head’s position, giving people an immersive experience with con-certs, aerial footage and games.

Japan’s Renesas was granted im-munity for revealing the existence of the cartel to the commission, which began its investigation in 2008 with raids on the companies. Infineon Technologies AG was fined 82.7 million euros, Philips 20.1 million euros, and Samsung 35.1 million euros, with the latter having its penalty reduced by 30 percent for having cooperated with investigators.

Rejecting the allegations as “un-

founded,” both Infineon and Philips said they would appeal the decision. The companies “in our view knew that their conduct was illegal,” said Joaquin Almunia, the commission’s vice president in charge of competi-tion policy.

They “discussed and exchanged sensitive commercial information on pricing, customers, contract negotiations, production capacity or capacity utilisation and their future market conduct,” the com-

mission said.Almunia added that “in this

digital era smart card chips are used by almost everybody, whether in their mobile phones, bank cards or passports.”

Companies producing them should be focused on being competitive, he said, adding: “If instead companies choose to collude, at the expense of both customers and end consumers, they should expect sanctions.”

The commission said that Re-nesas and its joint-venture parent companies Hitachi and Mitsbubishi had avoided a fine of more than 51 million euros because it was the first to reveal the existence of the cartel to the EU.

It said that Philips “remains liable for what happened during the period of infringement” even though it has since divested its

smart card chips business.Anyone harmed by the cartel may

seek damages before the courts of the European member states, the com-mission said. Infineon said from its base in Neubiberg, Germany, that it will review the decision and is “ready to appeal” at the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg.

It said it had conducted its own thorough probe and “concluded that none of its personnel acted improperly in handling competi-tively sensitive information” about smartcard chips.

In Amsterdam, senior Philips press officer Steve Klink told AFP that his company would appeal the decision as “we firmly believe that claims of anti-competitive behaviour by the former Philips smart card chips business are un-founded.”

The EU has previously fined US computer chip giant Intel 1.06 bil-lion euros for abusing its dominant market position.

In another case, following ac-cusations it was squeezing out competitors in Europe’s search market, Google, the world’s largest search engine, reached a tentative deal with the Commission in which it would display rivals’ links more prominently and avoid a fine of up to five billion euros.

Brussels launched its investiga-tion of Google in November 2010 following a complaint by several companies, including Microsoft.

The case remains open as Al-munia said his staff were “now analysing the responses” to the deal with Google that were received over the summer from 18 of the 20 plaintiffs.

EU fines Samsung, Philips and Infineon Agence France-Presse

BRUSSELS - The European Union fined Infineon, Philips and Sam-sung a total of 138 million euros (181 million dollars) on Wednesday for fixing the prices of smartcard chips, in its latest anti-trust case against technology firms. The German, Dutch and South Korean companies “colluded” between 2003 and 2005 to form the cartel on the chips, which are widely used in mobile phones, bank cards and passports, the European Commission said in a statement.

Samsung kicks off battle for holiday spending

The inspection and data collection team was led by the Head of Gianyar Manpower and Resettlement Agency, Gede Widarma Suharta, accompanied by the Division Head of Placement and Extension Ketut Suartha Ekarwa and his staff. They inspected Amandari Hotel at Kedewatan and Gaya Ceramic and De-sign on Jalan Raya Sayan, Ubud.

At Amandari Hotel was found a for-eign worker with the Foreign Worker Employment Permit issued by Bali Province. The team found irregularities in the Foreign Worker Employment Plan (RPTKA) issued by Bali Province. It mentioned the workplace was in three counties namely Gianyar, Karangasem and Badung. In fact, the foreign worker from Japan only worked at the Amandari Hotel located in Gianyar.

Similar case also happened to Gaya Ceramic and Design located on Jalan Raya Sayan, Ubud. The company em-

ployed two foreign workers with the permit issued by Bali Province. Actually, they clearly worked in Gianyar only, not in multiple counties.

Responding to the case, according to the Head of Gianyar Manpower and Resettlement Agency it was obviously detrimental in terms of income because the employer was supposed to submit the permit in the region where the expatriate worked.

Meanwhile, Human Resources Man-ager of Amandari Hotel, I Made Widia, admitted to just know if the extension permit services of Foreign Worker Em-ployment Permit had been available in Gianyar since September 2014. All this time, the hotel management submitted and paid the obligation to Bali Province. “Obviously, we have met our obligation in obtaining the permit for the foreign worker employment,” he claimed while asking for the correct procedures to the

government.Related to the Foreign Worker Em-

ployment Plan, the workplace was written at three locations. According to Made Widia, he did not know exactly about it. No foreign workers employed at Amandari also worked elsewhere. Amandari Hotel under the management of PT Villa Ayu only had the property in Gianyar.

Meanwhile, the Human Resources Department of Gaya Ceramic and De-sign, Sayan, Ubud, Sujiliawati told the team that her party only employed two foreign workers with the position as Director and Commissioner. They had processed the Foreign Worker Employ-ment Permit through an agency in Bali, although in reality they only worked in Gianyar and did not work elsewhere. “These happened because we lacked of information and submitted it through an agency. Further, we will comply with the existing rules,” she said.

Meanwhile, as of September 1, 2014 the Regional Bylaw No.8/2014 regarding the extension levy of Foreign Worker Employment Permit had been enacted. One of the provisions set forth that each foreign worker working in Gianyar is obliged to pay a levy worth USD 100. (kmb16)

TABANAN - Restricted land area at Mandung landfill and overloaded waste caused the Tabanan government to think hard in order that it could resolve the problem. In addition to processing the organic and inorganic waste directly at Mandung landfill, the Tabanan government also established a community-driven waste bank. The Head of Tabanan Environment Agency, AAN Raka Icwara W, when met on Wednesday (Sep 3), said that Tabanan cur-rently had 13 units of waste bank.

The waste bank program of Tabanan was launched in 2012. In fact, the tasks were not only limited to managing the organic waste into fertilizer or sorting inorganic waste to be further processed but also rais-ing public awareness for environmental care. Raka admitted that within the past two years, the waste bank in Tabanan had not generated a significant ef-fect on the volume of waste sent to landfill. It was still hampered by the lack of public awareness in sorting organic and inorganic waste. Yet, according to Raka, sorting the organic and inorganic waste would provide economic benefits for households. On that account, the waste bank was expected to change people’s mindset so that they could sort their waste and manage it all at once.

On the other hand, the waste bank in Tabanan was still operating on a small scale. However, the waste bank located in Kediri had been able to process waste in large scale. “The Tabanan Serasi waste bank in Kediri has even been able to produce large quanti-ties of organic fertilizer and it is distributed to subak members in Tabanan,” said Raka.

In the future, to reduce the volume of waste to landfill, Tabanan would increase the number of waste bank, especially in rural areas as well as de-velop organic and inorganic waste management to households. “Organic waste can be processed into fertilizer, while the inorganic one such plastic bag and plastic bottles can be sold again. We want to promote this to the household,” said Raka.

Meanwhile, the separation of organic and inor-ganic waste was also performed at the Mandung landfill. For collection and processing of organic waste, the Mandung landfill employed six workers. The Section Head of Waste Processing of Tabanan Sanitation and Landscape Agency (DKP), IGN Mayun Muliawan, explained that the workers col-lected leaf rubbish and then processed it into fertil-izer. “We have a machine for chopping leaves and 7 cabins for fermentation process of the organic waste into fertilizer,” said Mayun. The fermentation process took place for a month. Then, the organic fertilizer collected in the chamber reached 7-11 sacks. This result was then utilized for urban parks and the communities in need.

Meanwhile, the sorting process of the inorganic waste at the Mandung landfill was handled by 17 workers. The organic waste re-collected was plastic bags whose condition remained good. “Plastic bag of clear color has more expensive re-selling price,” said Mayun. The plastic bags collected would be taken to a wholesaler located at Tanah Bang.

Admittedly the Tabanan community had not been aware of sorting the organic and inorganic waste. It could be seen from the mixed waste dumped to landfill. “On that account, the workers were quite difficult to sort them,” said Mayun. (kmb24)

From page 1This time, coral reef began to grow naturally. By doing reef restoration,

Candidasa could re-offer an underwater excursion. To that end, his party hoped that Candidasa area could be maintained by tightening police patrol to prevent fishing boats from committing fish bombing. In other words, it could be developed into one of the undersea tourist attractions.

Sadra criticized the overseas promotion program with the budget worth hundreds of millions of rupiahs. Such a promotion was not effective to increase the number of tourist arrival. Moreover, the information about the region could be accessed through the internet from various parts of the world. However, if the condition of Candidasa was still damaged, it certainly could not increase the interests of travelers to make a visit.

He asked that before promoting Candidasa tourist attraction, the govern-ment should first make improvement, including public facilities that could support the excursions. “Do not promote something inappropriate with the reality because it just makes travelers disappointed,” he affirmed. (dwa)

“The funds were allegedly used for his personal purposes and boost-ing his public image,” Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Deputy Chairman Bambang Widjo-janto stated here on Thursday.

Earlier, Energy Minister Jero Wacik had been named as a suspect here on Wednesday in his capacity as the minister in 2011-2012 in connection with an alleged extor-tion case.

“Indeed, an order had been is-sued on September 2, 2014, regard-ing investigation on suspect Jero Wacik of the Ministry of Energy in connection with violation of Article 12, paragraph e, or Article 23 of Law No. 31 of 1999 in con-junction with Law No. 20 of 2001 and Article 421 of the Criminal

Code,” Zulkarnain, the KPK deputy chairman, announced at a press conference.

According to article 12, para-graph e, a state official who acts to benefit him/her or others against law or misuses his/her power to force others to give something, pay to do something for him/her, is extortion.

Anyone proven guilty of violat-ing the law may face a sentence of up to 20 years in jail and a maxi-mum fine of Rp1 billion.

“After assuming the post of energy minister, Jero Wacik had ordered several employees to extort money, as he claimed to collect additional operational funds over and above the budget allocations,” another KPK Deputy Chairman

Bambang Widjojanto reported at the press conference.

He referred to several illegal ac-tivities committed to rake up funds, such as procurements or kickbacks, and fictitious meetings to collect up to Rp9.9 billion.

The extortion case came to light after investigations into an alleged corruption case, which was linked to a public awareness event, fun

bike event and the ministry’s office maintenance work that amounted to Rp25 billion. As a result, the state incurred potential losses worth Rp9.9 billion.

Waryono has also been named a suspect in the alleged case of receiving bribes or making pledges after the KPK discovered US$200 thousand in his office while con-ducting a search operation in

connection with the bribery case involving former head of SKK Migas (oil and gas regulator) Rudi Rubiandini.

The KPK has, so far, also named parliamentary member Sutan Bha-toegana as a suspect in a corruption case related to the deliberation of the 2013 revised budget for the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry.

SINGAPORE - President Susi-lo Bambang Yudhoyono has urged President-elect Joko Widodo and his competitor Prabowo Subianto to reconcile after a tough competi-tion during the presidential elec-tion held on July 9.

“I hope Joko Widodo and his team do not constantly maintain a distance from Prabowo. It will be better if the two reconcile,” Yudhoyono stated on Thursday in a press conference during his visit to Singapore.

Yudhoyono noted that during the July presidential election, Prabowo garnered a significant

number of votes from the people. Prabowo also managed to estab-lish a political coalition, which holds 62 percent of the seats in the parliament. By reconciling with Prabowo and his supporters, Joko Widodo will ensure rela-tively smooth governance with less pressure from the parliament, Yudhoyono affirmed.

With regard to foreign affairs, Yudhoyono expressed hope that Joko Widodo can cooperate well with his other Indonesian coun-terparts. On July 22, the Gen-eral Elections Commission (KPU) declared Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and his running mate Jusuf Kalla as the winners of

the 2014 election with more than 53 percent of the votes.

However, the losing side, Prabowo Subianto and his run-ning mate Hatta Rajasa, refused to accept the defeat and accused the KPU of being unfair and rig-ging the election. Prabowo and Hatta then filed a lawsuit in the Constitutional Court (MK).

On August 21, the MK wholly rejected the suit related to the dispute of presidential election results as filed by presidential and vice presidential pair, Prabowo-Hatta.

“(Court) rejects the plaintiff’s request entirely,” noted MK Chief Justice Hamdan Zoelva.

JAKARTA - Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik has been accused of committing acts of extortion intended to improve his public image.

The new group “is the fruit of a blessed effort of more than two years to gather the mujahedeen in the Indian subcontinent into a single entity,” al-Qaida chief Ay-man al-Zawahri said in the video, which was seen online by the SITE monitoring group. While his com-ments raised concerns in India, al-Zawahri’s message seemed largely directed at his own rivals in the international jihad movement, and

with raising al-Qaida’s profile in the wake of repeated successes by the Islamic State militant group.

Al-Qaida has been increas-ingly overshadowed by the Islamic State, whose fighters have captured wide swaths of Syria and Iraq and recently beheaded two American journalists.

Al-Qaida “is struggling for its legitimacy in the eyes of the radi-calized Muslim world,” said Ajai

Sahni, a top Indian security analyst with the New Delhi-based Institute for Conflict Management. “Osama bin Laden has been killed and (al-Qaida’s) entire top leadership, apart from Zawahri and a few others, one by one have been decimated by the American drone attacks,” he said.

While al-Zawahri’s statement re-ferred to the “Indian subcontinent” — a term that most commonly re-fers to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal — his comments were widely seen as directed at India, a largely Hindu nation with a large Muslim minority.

Al-Zawahri said the group, Qae-dat al-Jihad in the Indian subcon-tinent, would fight for an Islamic state and laws across the region, “which was part of the Muslims’ territories before it was occupied by the infidel enemy.”

The leader of the new group, Essam Omar, said in an audio re-cording released with the video, that Jews and Hindus — who he referred to as “apostates of India” — “will watch your destruction by your own eyes.” Fighters will “storm your barricades with cars packed with gunpowder,” Omar said, decrying what he called the region’s “injustice toward Muslims.”

SRINAGAR, India — An over-crowded bus carrying wedding guests was swept away Thursday by a flooded stream in the Indian-held portion of Kashmir and about 70 people were missing, a state official said.

Rescuers were searching for the bus but had not been able to locate it in the gushing waters, said Shant-manu, who uses only one name.

The passengers were on their way to a wedding ceremony in a village in the Rajouri region, about 180 kilometers (110 miles) southwest of Srinagar, the main city in the Indian-held portion of Kashmir.

The bus reportedly had a capac-ity of only 54 people. Shantmanu said rescue efforts were being ham-pered by heavy rain and strong cur-rents. The region’s wedding season has been disrupted by heavy rains and the worst floods in 22 years, and many ceremonies have been postponed.

At least 14 people have died in the past two days, and authorities closed schools and colleges and

stopped train services in the area on Thursday. Meteorologists said the heavy rains were likely to continue for another two days.

Police officer Imtiyaz Hussain said the 14 victims were swept away by floodwaters or buried by mud from mountain slopes. They included a paramilitary officer whose bunker collapsed on him.

Soldiers and rescue workers used boats to move thousands of people to higher ground. At least 100 vil-lages across the Kashmir valley were flooded by overflowing lakes and rivers, including the Jhelum river, which was up to 1.5 meters (4 feet) above its danger level, of-ficials said.

Landslides and floods are com-mon in India during the monsoon season, which runs from June through September.

Parts of Srinagar were also flooded. In Bemina, a large neigh-borhood, thousands of residents waded through ankle-high water that entered their homes.

Authorities evacuated 5,000 people from the neighborhood and 100 others were believed to be stranded there.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The 3-year-old Great Dane was miserable and retching when its owners rushed him to a northwest Portland emergency animal hospital. It was something he ate.

X-rays showed a stomach full of foreign mate-rial. After nearly two hours of surgery, Dr. Ashley Magee had the answer — the dog had consumed 43 ½ socks.

DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital spokes-woman Shawna Harch said it’s perhaps the strang-est case in the hospital’s history, The Oregonian reported (http://is.gd/Zb55C9 ).

NEW DELHI — Al-Qaida has expanded into India, the leader of the terror group said in a video released Thursday, vowing that its militants would bring Islamic law to the entire sub-continent and “wage jihad against its enemies.” At least three Indian states with large Muslim populations have been put on alert in the wake of the video’s release, local TV stations reported, though there was no indication of an increased security presence.

“I think we played a very physi-cal match in the first two hours,” Djokovic said. “I am very glad to get through to another semi-final. “We both gave our best. At times, the tennis was not that nice, we made a lot of unforced errors but that’s due to a very physical battle we had in the first two sets.

“I knew coming into the match that he was going to go for his shots and the one who was the most ag-gressive would win. I am glad I

managed to stay fit in the end and pull through.” Murray ended the match struggling a little with his movement and required a hot com-press for his back midway through the fourth set.

But he produced arguably his best tennis since having back sur-gery 11 months ago and gave the top seed a real scare. In the end, the Scot was left to rue a series of missed break point chances, taking just four of 16 in all, while Djokovic

was successful on seven out of 10.In their 21st meeting, Djokovic

dropped serve in the opening game but surged ahead 4-1 only for Mur-ray to hit back, prompting the Serb to smash his racket on his chair at the change of ends. He regained his focus to take the tiebreak 7-1 and when he led 3-1 in the second set, he looked as if he would run away with the match.

But Murray suddenly began cracking forehands with huge power and he recovered to force another tiebreak, also winning it 7-1. The start of the third set proved crucial as Djokovic broke again for 3-1 but this time held his advantage to move ahead. Although Murray hung in well for much of the fourth set, despite a sore back, Djokovic broke in the 10th game to advance to the last four.

GRANADA, Spain — Ricky Rubio’s quick hands set the tone and Marc Gasol had a game-high 17 points as Spain beat France 88-64 Wednesday to remain un-defeated at the Basketball World Cup. Rubio had five assists, three steals and two drives down the lane for layups in the first quarter in his 100th appearance for the national team, with the Minnesota Timberwolves point guard look-ing eager to atone for Spain’s loss to France at last year’s European Championship.

Rubio struggled later, but Spain was never threatened down the stretch. France focused on con-taining Pau Gasol, but the Chi-cago Bulls player still scored 15 points to nearly match his brother Marc. The closest France got was 19-19, but Juan Carlos Navarro sunk a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the first quarter. Navarro then drained another 3 followed by Marc also scoring from long range.

And France never came close again. “I am disappointed with the score spread, because we started quite well,” said France coach Vincent Collet. “When you let them go they become unstop-

pable.” France, playing without star Tony Parker, was kept afloat by Nicolas Batum and Antoine Diot with 11 points each.

Spain (4-0) returns to the rau-cous Palacio de Deportes to play Serbia (2-2) on Thursday, when France (2-2) faces Egypt (0-4) to close Group A. Also in Granada, forward Marquinhos Vieira made six 3-pointers in a 81-73 win for Brazil (3-1) after it weathered Ser-bia’s explosive third quarter, when it erased an 18-point deficit.

At other venues, the U.S., Greece and Slovenia also improved to 4-0 to remain in first place in their groups with one game to go. U.S. forward Kenneth Faried kept up his sharp shooting as he led the U.S. with 16 points in a 106-71 over the Dominican Republic (2-2) in Group C in Bilbao. In Group B in Seville, Greece dished out 23 assists to beat Croatia 76-65 with forwards Kostas Papanikolaou and Kostas Kaimakoglou scoring 14 points each.

Goran Dragic of the Phoenix Suns scored 14 points and Slove-nia avoided an upset, holding off Angola 93-87 in Group D in Gran Canaria. Point guard Roberto Fortes scored 21 points while center Yanick Moreira added 20 more for Angola (1-3).

Donington Park will host the Mo-toGP British Grand Prix in 2015 after agreeing a deal with the Circuit of Wales to take the race for one season. The new Welsh venue took the British GP slot from Silverstone last month, and it was immediately revealed that a replacement track would be required for 2015 while work begins on the Circuit of Wales.

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Mo-toGP promoter Dorna said: “The Cir-cuit of Wales has worked very quickly

to secure the best deal for British race fans and we believe Donington Park will deliver a fantastic race in 2015.

“Donington has a long history and has been the scene of some of the most exciting MotoGP races in recent years and we are sure that the extensive works undertaken since it reopened four years ago will guar-antee a successful event.”

Chris Herring, a director of the development company behind the Circuit of Wales, added: “After an-

nouncing the long-term MotoGP agreement three weeks ago our priority has been to agree the venue for 2015.

“It is in the interests of everyone, especially the fans, to make a decision as soon as possible and in Donington Park we have a venue that shares our vision for growing MotoGP in the UK.”

Silverstone managing director Richard Philips confirmed they were unwilling to extend their contract

with Dorna by another year having reached a stalemate over hosting fees.

“We wanted to keep MotoGP at Silverstone, but cannot afford to subsidise it,” he said.

“Any future deal, with Dorna or The Circuit of Wales, had to make economic sense for all parties, includ-ing us. “We made what we considered to be the maximum sensible offer to retain the event at Silverstone, but it seems that The Circuit of Wales,

who have no experience of running a Grand Prix, have concluded they can do better running it themselves, using Donington until their circuit is ready.” The Circuit of Wales’ MotoGP deal will run until 2019, with an option for a further five years once that has expired.

Donington last hosted the British Grand Prix in 2008, before losing the race to Silverstone, which hosted the final event of its MotoGP deal last weekend.

NEW YORK - World number one Novak Djokovic wore down his old foe Andy Murray in a typically gruelling encounter under the lights at Flushing Meadows on Wednesday to reach the semi-finals of the U.S. Open. In a repeat of the 2012 final, which Murray won, the pair combined for some stunning long rallies before Djokovic pulled away for a 7-6 (1) 6-7 6-2 6-4 victory to set up a semi-final against Kei Nishikori of Japan.

“It can’t be revenge,” Germany coach Joachim Loew said. “You can’t bring the final back.” With Lionel Messi absent due to a right leg injury, Di Maria assumed the instigator’s role, setting up Sergio Aguero in the

21st minute, Erik Lamela’s outstand-ing volley in the 40th, and Federico Fernandez’ headed goal two minutes after the interval.

“Angel di Maria showed why he is one of the five best players in

the world,” Argentina coach Ge-rardo Martino said. Di Maria, who completed his move to Manchester United from Real Madrid last week, crowned his performance in the 50th with a chip over substitute Germany

‘keeper Roman Weidenfeller, after a great run set up by Argentina captain Javier Mascherano.

Andre Schuerrle pulled one back from a rebound two minutes later before Mario Goetze, who scored the winning goal in the World Cup final, made it 4-2 with a deflected shot in the 78th. Both sides fielded much-changed lineups to the ones that contested the biggest game in world football in Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium 52 days earlier.

Germany made seven changes to

its side. Captain Philipp Lahm, fellow defender Per Mertesacker and record scorer Miroslav Klose all retired after the final, while coach Loew also had to contend with a host of injuries. “Actually I can’t make any accusations against the team, they had never played together like that before,” Loew said.

Martino, who took over from Alejandro Sabella after the final, had to do without Messi on his debut. He did, however, have Di Maria — who missed the title match with an injury. “We would have beaten them even if Di Maria played on July 13,” Loew said. Martino said Di Maria made himself “more prominent” than he had been at the World Cup.

The attacking midfielder showed his intention early on with a run before Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer emerged to snuff out the dan-ger. Neuer captained the side in the absence of the injured Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was named as Lahm’s successor on Tuesday. Ar-gentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero then got the better of Mario Gomez in a one on one at the other end.

Gomez, back in the side after missing out on the World Cup due to fitness concerns, missed three chances to score with the goal at his mercy. The Fiorentina striker was whistled by fans after his last miss and again when he was substituted.

“He was missing for around seven months. For me it was important to see how he moved, and that he had the chances,” Loew said. “Of course he still needs a bit of time to get back to form after such a long time out with injury.”

LONDON — Wayne Rooney marked the start of his England captaincy by scoring a penalty in an uninspiring 1-0 victory over Norway in front a record-low crowd for the team at the new Wembley Stadium on Wednesday. In England’s first game since its worst-ever World Cup showing, Roy Hodgson’s side rarely looked like scoring against unambi-tious opposition and the breakthrough in the friendly only came when Raheem Sterling was tripped in the penalty area.

From the penalty spot, Rooney’s 41st international goal in the 68th minute gave the 28-year-old striker sole possession of fourth place on the England scoring leaderboard, just eight behind Bobby Charlton’s

record. “We all could have done bet-ter,” Rooney said. “In the first half we moved quite well but they made it difficult for us and sat back and created a few opportunities in the first half. “In the second half we started really sloppy and that was disappointing as we wanted to go out and really take the game to them.”

The attendance was given as 40,181 but appeared to be lower at 90,000-capacity stadium, given it included the 17,000 Club Wembley members who have access to every game. The previous lowest since the new stadium opened in 2007 saw 48,876 attend a 2011 friendly against Sweden. When England left Brazil early after losing twice and drawing once, this friendly was always going to be a tough sell when England is contracted to playing all home games at Wembley.

With stalwart midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard retiring after the World Cup, this was being billed as the start of a new era, with the average age of the starting lineup 24 as England prepares for the start of qualifying for the 2016 Euro-pean Championship at Switzerland on Monday. In the post-World Cup post mortem much scrutiny has come on the limiting opportunities for English youngsters. That was highlighted when the summer transfer window closed with the bulk of the 835 mil-lion pounds ($1.38 billion) splurged by Premier League clubs being on foreign players.

The stubborn Norwegians, who open Euros qualifying against Italy, should be more worried about the state of its national team, which hasn’t qualified for a tournament since Euro

2000 and was content sitting back for much of game in north London, show-ing limited ambition. But England struggled on the ball to capitalize on its domination, with goalkeepr Orjan Nyland rarely troubled.

In Sterling, though, England has an electrifying 19-year-old talent. The Liverpool winger’s vision was clear when he sent a 25th-minute crossfield ball that went high to the feet of Daniel Sturridge, who could only clip it onto the roof of the net. Yet it was England goalkeeper Joe Hart who had the first save to make just before halftime from Tarik Elyounoussi and appeared uneasy when he had a seemingly easy cross to deal with.

At the start of the second half, Hart had to produce a diving one-handed save to keep out a header from Joshua King who rose above inexperienced

defender John Stones. But it was Sterling’s pace that

eventually spared England from em-barrassment, when he was brought down by Omar Elabdellaoui’s sliding challenge, and Rooney converted the spot kick. But England seemed more dangerous up front in the last 20 min-utes after Rooney had been replaced by former Manchester United team-mate Danny Welbeck. The striker, who joined Arsenal on Monday, briefly enlivened a subdued crowd with his endeavor, striking well only to be denied by Nyland.

“Wayne will tell you he can play better than that and have better games,” Hodgson said. “But you’re not always going to give the best performance and you don’t become a bad player if you don’t put in the performance you wanted.”

The law firm that represents soc-cer players who object to playing on artificial turf at next year’s Women’s World Cup said Wednesday that a FIFA-commissioned survey of players shows that 77 percent feel major tour-naments should be played on grass.

The attorneys, who are considering taking legal action in Canada ahead of the tournament, included the results of the survey in a letter sent to soccer’s six international confederations appealing for support. They said that soccer’s governing body led players to believe the results would help inform the deci-sion about which surface to use.

U.S. national team veteran Abby Wambach said that she was among the players that took the survey. Wambach is among a group of U.S. and interna-tional players protesting the use of turf

at the tournament, claiming it amounts to gender discrimination because the men played on grass.

Not only do soccer balls move dif-ferently on natural grass, but injuries are also less likely, players say.

“This is the pinnacle of our sport,” said Wambach, 34, a fixture on the national team since 2003. “As an older player it’s not only my job but my responsibility to make sure the sport be played on the very best surface for the very best tournament of our careers.”

Wambach says that players can’t slide into tackles as they normally would because of potential injuries to their knees and legs, and they certainly risk getting hurt on hard landings from diving headers.

In late July, the players joined in a letter of protest penned to FIFA and the Canadian Soccer Association. The

players say that unless their concerns are addressed, legal action could be taken in Canada based on that country’s laws against gender-based discrimination.

No such action has been taken yet, but the letter to the confederations indicates the effort is ramping up.

There has been widespread support for the protest on social media, with such celebrities including actor Tom Hanks and NBA player Kobe Bryant joining in the debate.

“Canadian and FIFA officials need to be transparent about what happened then and what’s hap-pening now. Above all, Canada and FIFA need to fix their mistake and give women’s World Cup 2015 participants the playing conditions they deserve and the law demands,” attorney Hampton Dellinger said.

AMSTERDAM — AZ Alkmaar says coach Marco van Basten is tak-ing a break until mid-September to recover from a health problem. AZ says in a statement on Wednesday the former Ajax and AC Milan striker is being given “more time to rest.”

The club’s director of football, Earnest Stewart, says the club doc-tor has advised that “rest will speed up the recovery” of 49-year-old

Van Basten, who was absent from his team’s 3-1 win at Dordrecht on Saturday.

The club statement did not dis-close the nature of Van Basten’s condition. Dutch media have re-ported he is suffering from stress-related heart palpitations.

Van Basten is due back on Sept. 14, meaning he will miss a friendly against Belgian team Mechelen and a Dutch league matchup with his former club Heerenveen.

DORTMUND, Germany — Borussia Dort-mund and Turkey midfielder Nuri Sahin has been ruled out of action for an estimated two months after a knee operation. The Bundesliga club says on its website that Sahin underwent surgery on Wednesday, when doctor Heinz-Juergen Eichhorn removed inflamed tissue from his left knee.

Team doctor Markus Braun estimated the player’s recovery period. Sahin has been plagued by knee problems since Dortmund’s preparations for the season began, initially with knee capsule irritation then tendinitis. He is yet to play a competitive game this season.

Sahin has made 49 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund, scoring five goals and setting up six more, since his return from Real Madrid in January 2013.

dropped serve in the opening game but surged ahead 4-1 only for Mur-ray to hit back, prompting the Serb to smash his racket on his chair at the change of ends.

The hospital entered last February’s tale, com-plete with X-rays, in an annual contest sponsored by the vet magazine, Veterinary Practice News, and won a prize.

The DoveLewis says the Great Dane was sent home a day after surgery, and is still alive. There was no word on what he’s eaten lately.

(kmb24)

NEW YORK — An organization that works on global development through fashion plans to honor Don-na Karan for her work with artisans in Haiti and around the world.

Fashion 4 Development, a part-ner of the United Nations’ mil-lennium development initiative, will award the New York-based designer its medal of honor at its “First Ladies Luncheon” Sept. 23 at The Pierre hotel.

Karan’s work around the world aimed at fostering sustainable economies, creating jobs and devel-oping art education were cited for the honor. Her foundation, Urban Zen, develops markets and presents the work of artisans in Haiti in the U.S. and elsewhere.

She has designed and curated an

artisan collection called “Naturally Haiti,” working with artisans who create recycled T-shirts, handbags, tobacco leaf vases, wood chande-liers and horn jewelry sold in Urban Zen stores and her retail partners.

Urban Zen has a partnership with artisan Paula Coles in Haiti for a vo-cational education training center to open next spring in Port-au-Prince. The training center is a commitment Karan made through the Clinton Global Initiative to train artisans in creating jewelry, handbags, acces-sories and other items.

Karan has shot two ad campaigns in Haiti starring model Adriana Lima, showcasing the country’s beauty and creativity. She is an honorary U.S. ambassador to the country.

Others will also be honored at the event.

We managed to arrest the suspect and he was immediately taken to police station,” said the for-mer Chief of Kerambitan Police, Tabanan.

In addition to arresting the suspect from Jember, the officer also secured the evidence in the form of backpack containing a camera, books and project docu-ments. The case was developed and the suspect was investigated intensively. To the officer, the suspect claimed to have taken action in Sanur for 4 times, North Kuta for 4 times and once in West Denpasar. He was targeting empty homes and travelers put-ting their luggage carelessly.

“Foreign travelers usually put their goods in a vehicle or motor-cycle. It became the target of the suspect. Mostly he took action during the day. So far, we are still looking for other evidences, including the report,” affirmed Nanang. (kmb36)

Shooting on the new movie will begin next year, Sony said. No release date has been set.

Claire Danes of “Homeland” earned $5 million, while “Girls” star Lena Dunham rounded out the top 10 with earnings of $3.5 million.

in the number of tourist arrival to Karangasem, mainly to Candi-dasa. “A number of hotels are in sluggish condition because their handling guests were only some few,” he said.

Nyoman Sadra revealed the problem related to the decreas-ing amount of tourist arrival was caused by the destruction to the charms of Candidasa, especially in the matter of coastal areas.

According to him, many things

had to be addressed by Karan-gasem government in restoring the charms of Candidasa so that it could draw the interests of travel-ers again. Among the aspects, the beach should be improved and arranged so as not to look like a slum by carrying out restoration to coral reef having been destroyed by fish bombing and coral mining in a large scale for the manufacture of dolomite.
