Freshlyground are the high-energy bandthat brings together traditional kwelamusic, jazz, blues and indie rock, to a mixthat’s infectiously South African. Theirofficial song of the World Cup in 2010underlined their status as the musical voiceof a nation’s adolescent democracy.

Since 1964, the Mahotella Queens havepresented their infectious vocal harmonies,mbaqanga music and dancing foraudiences all over the world. Huge namesin South Africa, they’ve played all themajor world stages and were featured in2012 in London’s Hyde Park for theQueen’s Jubilee Celebrations.

Warne Marsh and Lee Konitz were the two saxophonists who Tristano famouslyinstilled with his teachings and 40 yearsago gave one of the most memorableconcerts in Edinburgh’s jazz history. Two of Scotland’s leading players, havegot together to recreate the extraordinarysound of their band. Kershaw plays Konitzand Arguelles plays Marsh, and we hear a short set from the brilliant Roby Glod.

LENNIE TRISTANO DAYLennie Tristano was one of the great jazz innovators. He created a cool, dispassionate,linear approach to improvisation that his fans (audiences and musicians) find intoxicating.Playing and hearing this music is one of the most thrilling experiences in jazz – and yetrarely heard. Two concerts today present music under the influence of Tristano.

Legendary singer-songwriter Van Morrison grew uplistening to artists such as Ray Charles and Solomon Burke,as well as Woody Guthrie, Muddy Waters and CharlieParker, courtesy of his father’s record collection. Theseartists made a real impact on his work, and much of hismusic has been influenced by jazz and the Celtic tradition,as well as soul music and r’n’b.

Recently he has consistently wowed audiences and criticswith concert after concert of classic Van Morrison – “astunning performance, artistry at work” (The Telegraph), “a real return to form … a vibrant and timely reaffirmationof Morrison’s talents” (Uncut). Jazz was born in WW1. We mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War by telling onestory you won’t find in this year’s commemorations. It’s the tale of how jazz began itsconquest of the world after the American navy threw it out of New Orleans. This showtakes us back to the seedbed of jazz and charts its joyful progress across the States andaround the globe. In songs and contemporary stories, through the tango and foxtrot,black regiments, religious line-singing and marching bands, we rediscover those earlydays and watch the progress of a musical revolution. We find out how the immensechanges to everyday life, wartime profiteering, escape from misery, sparked theexplosion of this new and sophisticated music. Woody Allen’s musical director, ConalFowkes, will take charge of a stellar ensemble of musicians, and interact with actors,dancers and singers, in this fast-moving show. Their first concert in 2004featured Morton’s music, and now, Mathieson presents rarelyheard – in a couple of cases, perhaps never heard before –unpublished big band scores, made available from thearchives of HNOC in New Orleans.

In 1965 Britain’s leading jazz musician, Tubby Hayes, put together an Orchestra toplay at the time of the Commonwealth Conference. With the 2014 Games in fullswing in Glasgow, we present an updated band that plays some of the music of themid-60’s – by Tubby, Jimmy Deuchar, Rob McConnell and Gil Evans, and brings it upto date, with music by a host of great Commonwealth composers. The band ispacked with top Scottish and Commonwealth musicians and led by the brilliantpianist, bandleader and ex-Mercury Prize nominee, Zoe Rahman. Hip, focused and charismatic, Scott isevery bit the iconic jazz trumpeter. Withthe bell of his Dizzy Gillespie-style “bent”trumpet pointing skywards like a rocketlauncher, he explodes onto stage – rangyand savvy, lyrical and explosive. His musicreflects his New Orleans-born, Harlem-based life, as he straddles tradition andmodernity, from bop to hip hop. Instead ofthe clearly-articulated, pure-toned soundof a Louis or a Dizzy, Scott’s trumpet voiceis smudgy, thrillingly edgy, fast and loose.

South African trumpeter, Faku, raids thejazz tradition too and his band evokes theMiles Davis Quintet and classic Blue Notebands, but he’s alive to the whole SouthAfrican tradition too, and sounds everyinch the leading South African jazzmusician of today.

EDINBURGH NAPIER UNIVERSITY JAZZ SUMMER SCHOOL

Edinburgh Napier University Jazz Summer School is aweek-long intensive course, covering practical approachesto improvisation and performance. Designed to developjazz playing skills for musicians of all ages and abilities, thecourse includes instrumental and ensemble coaching fromacclaimed professional jazz musicians/educators under thedirectorship of the university’s Jazz Musician in ResidenceHaftor Medbøe.

This year’s course takes place in thebMusic School atEdinburgh Napier University’s centrally located MerchistonCampus, and offers opportunities to hear complimentaryconcerts at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival in theevenings. The week culminates in a public concert by thestudents performing in ensemble groups.
