Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

The wild Scottish countryside—with its moors that turn purple in summer, its wide lochs andromantic castles steeped in history, and its ancient standing stones—is the dramatic backdrop for aspectacular summer Celtic Isles cruise from Edinburgh to Dublin.

We are delighted to be joined on this voyage by Amelia Peck, the Metropolitan Museum’sMarica F. Vilcek Curator of American Decorative Arts. Her knowledge of historic interiors and textileswill enrich our visits to the many country houses that will be opened especially for us. Also lecturingon board will be noted architectural historian and garden author, Dublin-based Patrick Bowe.

Begin in the dynamic capital city of Edinburgh, where we will see the classical Georgian NewTown and medieval Edinburgh Castle. We will be piped aboard Clipper Odyssey in the port of Leith fora first call at Aberdeen, renowned for its great university and nearby Crathes Castle, set in outstanding gardens. Highlights of our Scottish itinerary include discovery of prehistoric sites in the windsweptOrkney Islands; a tour of 14th-century Cawdor Castle, the setting for Shakespeare’s Macbeth; a visit tothe magical isle of Iona, burial ground of Scottish Kings; and a walk in the famed Inverewe Gardens.

Crossing the Irish Sea takes us to Northern Ireland, where we are invited to view the contentsand gardens of several country houses, among the most attractive in Europe. We will visit not astourists but as guests of their ancestral owners. There will be receptions and lunches at these greathouses. Among our hosts will be the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn and Lord and Lady Dunleath.A lovely day in Dublin, with a private visit to Helen Dillon’s world-renowned garden and a curatorialtour of the collections at the National Gallery, caps a memorable journey.

The Clipper Odyssey is an intimate shipwith easy access to less-crowded harbors. Dayafter day, we will experience the very best ateach port of call. Performing in the evening willbe the well-known pianist and cabaret singerSteve Ross. For those who wish an in-depth lookat Edinburgh, an optional prelude is arranged.

We hope you will join us for thiscruise in the exhilarating air of the Celtic Isles;for the pleasures of interesting lectures andconcerts; and for the congenial company ofmembers from The Royal Oak Foundation andthe National Trust for Historic Preservation, our co-sponsors for the trip.

Sincerely,

Emily K. Rafferty President
