EDIBLE ENGLAND EVENT GUIDE
MOLE VALLEY / 10-19 SEPTEMBER 2021
Make bigger
Participants in this year’s Heritage Open Days programme welcome its twenty-seventh year in a mood of
challenge and optimism. The programme celebrates the exciting characteristics of the various regions within England, and unites local people, places and institutions with thousands of volunteers.
The past months have been difficult, and it was a remarkable achievement that such a series of events was produced so successfully last year. While the pandemic’s consequences remain apparent, hopefully there is a mood of potential liberation in the air. This is reflected in this year’s cheerful theme ‘Edible England’. Mole Valley’s launch event, a talk by Tasha Marks entitled ‘Sweet Tooth: An Edible History
WELCOME TO
INDEX
MOLE VALLEY HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2021
of Art’, sets the tone. There are many further explorations of the theme in the various events, such as the talk on Beverley Nichols, Ashtead resident and popular journalist, who gave legendary dinner parties. He was also a frequent visitor to Polesden Lacey, where still more lavish feasts occurred!
While the chosen theme is well explored in our programme, there are also many new and familiar aspects reflecting the broader richness of our local heritage. As ever we feel sure that Mole Valley residents and the many visitors to the area will have some fascinating activities to enjoy over the Heritage Open Days 2021 period.

Saturday 11 September: 11am – 4pm
Learn how Newdigate fed itself in the past and meet local food and drink producers who are supplying the needs of the village today.
In the past, Newdigate, due to its isolation and poor communications, had to be self-sufficient. We will be running a continuous slide show of hundreds of pictures depicting the village in the past. We are also inviting local food and drink suppliers to display their products for visitors to see and sample.

Meander through the tranquil grounds of Surrey’s ‘best-kept secret’, the private gardens at our Grade II listed property.
Fetcham Park’s rich history includes an artist from Versailles, a royal architect, and a pioneering gardener. Wander around our grounds and follow in the footsteps of the colourful characters who built the House over 300 years ago.
Soak up the atmosphere of a bygone era in our tranquil gardens and prepare to be surprised by some new installations created by local craftspeople, brought together at Fetcham Park specially for Heritage Open Days. Take time to also step next door to St. Mary’s Church, dating back to the 11th-Century, where you can explore the grounds and churchyard.
Visitors may also have the chance to explore the historic ground floor of the House with the Shell Room, Drawing Room and Salon, complete with elaborate plasterwork and decorative gold leaf. Marvel at original murals in the Great Hall by Louis Laguerre dating back to the early 1700s and admire the grandeur of Surrey’s ‘best-kept secret’.
Visitors will be given a copy of local historian Alan Pooley’s guide to the Village of Fetcham, complete with a detailed map. This guide will be available from Fetcham Park or St Mary’s Church and visitors can park in the grounds of either building whilst they take this circular walking tour.

Having been extensively extended and remodelled in the late 18th Century, it became the manor house of Effingham manor in 1823 and early decorative features remain.
Limited parking is restricted to members only, further parking is available in the village.
St Nicholas’ Church, Charlwood
Saturday 18 September: 11am – 4pm Sunday 19 September: 2pm – 5pm (3pm – bell ringing)

Members of the Flower Guild will be filling the church with themed flower arrangements together with all manner of fruit and vegetables, including pumpkins (if they grow in time!)
Another team of inventive volunteers are dreaming up ideas for bread, blackberries, song, and all things autumnal to delight the senses. We have lots of ideas – some may flourish and grow but not all will come to fruition. Please see the website for confirmed events.

St Barnabas Church is a remarkable, ornate church in the middle of the countryside which was funded entirely by the then Lord Ashcombe as the Denbies estate church. George Gilbert Scott was commissioned as the architect with the church finished in 1859. It is said that the church cost three times the average for a church of this size. Of particular note are the setting, the fine spire containing an excellent ring of eight bells, the Gothic revival interior and the memorial chapel. No booking required.
