Mission Statement

The Scarsdale Public Schools seek to support each student’s full development, thereby enabling our youth to be effective and independent contributors in a democratic society and in an interdependent world.

To this end, we encourage them to think and express themselves clearly, critically and creatively; to understand themselves and others within the broad fabric of human experience and the natural universe; to appreciate their rights and responsibilities as citizens, and to become people of integrity, maturity and generous spirit.

A measure of our success is the degree to which they fulfill their potential for the common good, non sibi – not for themselves alone.

Valuing our individuality, we unite to keep the flame of learning.

Statement of Beliefs

Families, religious and other social institutions, and the community as a whole, as well as the schools and each student, share responsibility for achieving the Mission. We believe success is most likely when all dedicate their fullest individual energies to this enterprise, understanding one another, communicating well, and cooperating. In recognition of its part, the Board of Education specifically commits itself and the Scarsdale Schools, within available resources, to the following ideals:

High standards of scholarship in a reasoned and humane atmosphere. An education where adults know each student’s mind and person. Teaching, guidance and counseling which are caring, reflective, respectful of

and responsive to individual aptitudes and needs, while mindful of the greater good.

A school environment structured to help students develop a growing sense of responsibility and self-discipline, involving them in the development and direction of their own education.

Integrated, continuous and progressively broadening opportunity in and beyond the classroom for students to grow intellectually and in leadership, self-expression, talent, and interest.

An education which reflects awareness of promising and effective new developments in theory and methods.

A school community in which all members express by word and deed the virtues of integrity, generosity, kindness, reliability, patience, self-reliance, consideration, and support of others.

Letter from the Principal

September 2015

Dear Parents,

On behalf of the Edgewood faculty and staff, welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. We are excited about working with you and continuing our tradition of excellence as we begin Edgewood’s ninety-sixth year.

Edgewood opened on January 5, 1919. Our school’s first principal, Miss Mary Piedalue, quickly established a reputation for excellence in education. Over the years everyone in the community has worked closely together to provide a warm and friendly learning environment for children. As Edgewood’s sixth principal, I am proud to continue this tradition. We continue to benefit from a strong and diverse faculty, a high level of parent support, and our unique multicultural population. I hope you will work closely with the school and share this very special Edgewood spirit!

Edgewood’s students profit greatly from the involvement of parents through our many PTA committees. If you have not already volunteered to assist with some of these PTA activities, I encourage you to do so.

I look forward to working with you this year to provide another fruitful year for our children. Our staff is eager to work closely with you as partners in your children’s growth and development. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or myself.

Sincerely,

Scott E. Houseknecht

Letter from the PTA Co-Presidents

September 2015

Dear Parents and Staff,

A big welcome to all of our students and families for the 2015-2016 Edgewood School year. We look forward to working with you and the Edgewood faculty and staff to make our school a wonderful place to learn, have fun and make life-long connections.

One of the goals of the Edgewood PTA is to foster communications between home and school.  This is done through the work of over 50 committees, which provides ample volunteer opportunities for parents and caregivers. Get involved in your child’s elementary school journey. Your volunteer time is truly appreciated whether you volunteer an hour a year or you chair a committee. Being part of the Edgewood PTA is the perfect opportunity to make new friends, help improve our school, and experience the nurturing and warm community to which we belong.  You'll find that the commitment of our parent volunteers makes Edgewood a special place.

Please take a minute to read through this year’s handbook. It contains useful information about our school, our PTA and our community. Please feel free to contact either one of us if you have any questions. We look forward to a wonderful year and hope to make it a fruitful and progressive one for you and your child.

 Sincerely,

Katie Rich, Co-President [email protected] Elizabeth (Liz) Massey, Co-President [email protected]

School Hours: 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.Children may enter the school when the first bell rings at 8:35 a.m. They should

not arrive prior to that time. There is no supervision for students prior to 8:35 a.m. or after the 3:00 p.m. dismissal. This holds true during inclement weather as well.

If a child arrives after the final bell at 8:45 a.m., he or she will be considered late.

Student Responsibilities and Adult BehaviorThe Edgewood Student Handbook addresses the expectations the school has for

student’s school behavior. Consistency and continuity of behavior in common school areas is critical to our student’s development of responsible behavior. For example, students are frequently reminded that when they are in the hallways during the school day, they should walk quietly; noise from the hallways interferes with classroom instruction. Teachers reinforce and model this behavior. Parents are requested to assist with this through their own hall behavior.

In addition, an important goal we have for our children is to help them learn appropriate behavior as a member of an audience. Assemblies provide an educational experience for students. Showing respect for the speaker or performer and appreciation for the program are good manners and important skills for life. Parents who attend school performances should assist school personnel in achieving this objective. Parents with preschoolers are expected to leave if their children become disruptive or interfere with the audience’s enjoyment of or interest in the program.

Protecting Instructional TimeThe time each teacher spends with his/her class is valuable and necessary for

learning. Interruptions to that time limit the amount of and quality of instruction that can be provided to the group. To minimize classroom disruptions and maximize instructional time, parents should not come to the classroom during school hours, or otherwise take their children out of class for anything other than designated legal absences. Messages for teachers or students should be communicated through the office. Late or forgotten lunches, homework, notes, etc. should be dropped off with office staff who will see that the student receives it. Each teacher will establish at Open House and in a newsletter the preferred means of parent-teacher communication.

Kindergarten ProgramDuring the month of September, kindergarteners will be dismissed each day at

noon. Full days will begin this year on Monday, September 28 when the school day will be 8:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Lunch ProgramAll elementary school students in Grades K – 5 whose parents wish them to do

so are permitted to remain at school during the lunch period. There is no lunch program on days when the school closes at Noon. All students whose parents wish them to do so may return home for lunch. Lunch is not provided by the school. Each child must bring his or her own lunch. The child’s name should be clearly marked on the lunch box or sturdy lunch bag. For reasons of safety, please do not send liquids in glass containers. Warming-up capabilities are unavailable. The PTA offers a lunch program available to order through SchoolPay: Japanese Obento (Mondays), Mayan catering (Tuesdays and Fridays), and Pizza (Wednesdays). No lunch is served on Thursdays as this day is reserved for occasional special programs such as Classical Café. Please refer to the PTA website for information on all of the lunch programs and chair contact information. Students must observe appropriate school behavior at all times. Courtesy is expected toward peers and lunch supervisors. Rules established by lunch supervisors to provide a safe, pleasant environment for all children must be followed. Persistent violators of such rules may forfeit a child’s privilege to remain at school and participate in the lunch program. Jeffrey Weigel (721-2702) is the Lunch Supervisor. He will meet with students prior to the first lunch period to explain lunch procedures to each grade.

Students will sit with classmates during September and October. After that time, students will be assigned to tables. Those table assignments will change every two months.

Health InformationHealth Examinations: The New York State Department of Education requires

that all children entering Grades 1, 3, 7 and 10 have a health examination. This will be done by the school doctor unless the child submits, by October 1, 2014, a report of an examination signed by his or her own physician. All children new to the district must submit a current physical report. Eye examinations are strongly recommended.

Absences: All school absences must be accounted for. If a child is to be absent from school, parents should call the Edgewood School Nurse at 721-2705, before 9:15 a.m. Communicable diseases should be reported as soon as diagnosis has been made so that parents of exposed schoolmates may be notified. Failure to report an absence necessitates a call to the home. A parent may make arrangements to pick up assignments for a child who is to be absent for several days. In the case of prolonged confinement, home tutoring may be arranged. The principal should be contacted in such instances.

Accidents and Illnesses at School: If a child becomes ill or sustains an injury during school hours, a parent or designated adult will be telephoned. No child is permitted to go home alone; s/he must be picked up at school.

Emergency Contact Information: Please contact the Nurse’s Office in writing if there is a change in the following: Address or Phone Number, Family Status, Business Number, Doctor, Emergency Numbers to call if you cannot be reached. If you will be away from home for an extended period, we need to know who will be in charge of your children during your absence. Please include a neighborhood emergency contact to whom your child(ren) could be dismissed should local parkways and highways become congested or closed during an emergency.

Early DismissalA child must have a written note to leave school at any time during school

hours. No child is permitted to leave the building unaccompanied except children in Grades 1 – 5 at regular dismissal times. A child excused from school during school hours must be called for in the office by a predetermined adult.

Inclement Weather InformationIn the event of inclement weather, families will be notified of school closings via

email and by direct phone contact. The district uses an automated calling system to notify parents of school delays, cancellations or early dismissals. Please notify the school office if your contact information changes (home phone, cell number and email address) so you are sure to receive these notifications. The decision to close school because of severe weather conditions is announced on radio stations WFAS (1230 AM) and WOR (710 AM) beginning at 7:00 a.m. and on Cable TV, Channel 77. There will be an announcement on the district telephone (721-2400), but those lines may be too busy to be of help.

Early Dismissal Plan for Bad WeatherThe Scarsdale Board of Education has instituted early dismissal procedures to

be used only in the event of a severe storm that had not been forecast early enough to close school for the day. This decision will be made by 10:30 a.m. Parents who wish may pick their children up earlier if they choose to do so, but must sign their child out with the school nurse. The Elementary Early Dismissal Due to Weather Conditions Plan includes direct phone contact and email with every family K-5. Please notify the school office if your contact information changes (home phone, cell number and email address) so you are sure to receive these notifications.

In the rare instance when a parent cannot be reached by phone, the school will use the emergency names and numbers that parents have provided to the school. Parents must make sure that any name given as an emergency contact person is someone who can be reached and will be able to pick up the child if it becomes necessary. Therefore, emergency numbers and cell phone numbers need to be kept up to date and reliable. The school will identify volunteers from its professional staff to ensure the safe dismissal of all students. In the event that a student is left behind at the school as a result of an inability to contact either a parent or emergency designee, volunteers will stay with the child until the child is picked up.

Edgewood Emergency Response and Safety TeamThe Edgewood Emergency Response and Safety Team includes the principal,

teacher-in-charge, school psychologist, school secretary, nurse, a local law enforcement official, the PTA President, and representatives from the faculty. The committee formulated a plan of action to manage and address emergency situations. All members of the team have received training and are prepared to assume the responsibilities associated with maintaining a safe school environment. The team meets regularly to review and update the safety procedures that have been established.

Religious InstructionChildren may legally be dismissed from school one hour per week for religious

instruction. A signed request slip from the religious institution must be presented to formalize this arrangement.

Class TripsClassroom teachers may augment their regular programs with trips off the

school grounds. Parents must sign permission slips for each trip they wish their child to attend and must pay the cost of transportation and/or tickets.

Children whose parents choose not to grant permission will be cared for at school.

Single/Step Parent FamiliesBoth custodial and non-custodial parents are entitled to full access to their

child’s school records. Non-custodial parents may also request written communications such as report cards and notices of parent-teacher conferences. Address any inquiries to the principal.

Student Involvement CouncilThe Edgewood Student Involvement Council is composed of two representatives

from each first through fifth grade class. The Council meets regularly with the principal to discuss ways of making the school a better place for children and adults. All children have an opportunity to represent their class.

The primary purpose of the Student Involvement Council is to provide a forum for students to meet directly with the principal to convey concerns, recommend solutions to problems, and plan special events. Recycling, playground renovations, the lunch program, and the student handbook are some of the topics which have been discussed by this group.

Class OrganizationA basic assumption made when grouping children for instruction in Scarsdale is

that groups should be heterogeneous. This means that in an ideal situation, any single classroom will be an equivalent subset of the larger school population. The following criteria are used in the process of establishing balanced, heterogeneous groups:

1. Gender of each child;2. Academic achievement of each child;3. Level of English proficiency of children who are receiving or have recently

received E.S.L. services;4. Social, emotional and physical development of each child (this also

includes energy level, distractibility, maturity, etc.);5. Combinations of children to ensure that children who do and do not work

well together are placed appropriately, and6. Learning style and specific needs of each child.

Considering the above criteria, every effort is made to maximize the learning potential of each class.

HomeworkDistrict Policy: The district homework policy states that “the self-educating

individual is the ultimate goal of a good education and homework should contribute to this goal.” The policy recognizes three types of homework: preparation, practice, and extension. Preparation assignments help students get ready for activities that will follow in the classroom. For example, students may be asked to locate an item at home or to ask their parents for information. Practice assignments are designed to reinforce newly acquired skills. For example, students might complete sample math problems on their own after learning a new method for solving a math problem. Extension assignments are frequently long-term, on-going projects that parallel class work.

Time Required For Homework: The amount of time required for assigned homework should take into account the child’s age as well as the needs of growing children which include the need for outdoor exercise and play, social and family recreation, and the pursuit of hobbies.

As a rule, no formal homework assignments are given in kindergarten. In Grades 1 and 2, homework may, at the teacher’s discretion, be assigned on Monday through Thursday nights. The approximate times generally given to complete assignments are: Grade 1 (10 minutes); Grade 2 (20 minutes); Grade 3 (30 minutes); Grade 4 (30-45 minutes); and Grade 5 (45-60 minutes).

In general, homework is not assigned over vacation periods. However, assignments which are appropriate at vacation time may be given, including: reading, research projects, journal writing. All children are encouraged to read for approximately 30 minutes each evening.

If you find that your child is unable to complete his or her homework in the approximate time indicated, contact your child’s teacher.

Homework Missed During School Absence: The teacher takes the responsibility for home assignments for children who are legally absent. The teacher or school is not responsible for providing homework missed when a child is illegally absent as in the case, for example, when a family goes on vacation when school is in session.

How Parents Can Help With Homework: Parents can help by:1. Discussing homework on a daily basis with their child;2. Providing a comfortable, quiet place with adequate lighting where the child can

work without distractions;3. Planning other family activities around homework so that the child can complete

assignments on time;4. Helping children budget time so that homework is not an unreasonable burden.

(This is particularly important when there are long-term assignments.);5. Evaluating the number of extracurricular activities in which children are involved to

prevent over-scheduling;6. Being patient when children need help. Reviewing directions and offering

examples are helpful; doing the work for children is not; and7. Checking with the teacher if something doesn’t seem right. Parents and the child’s

teacher are partners in learning.

Conferences and Progress ReportsAll Scarsdale school personnel strive to maintain close communication with the

parents of their students. This is accomplished in a number of different ways. Scarsdale parents receive three written progress reports each year, in the fall, winter and summer. Each year, two parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for students in Grades K-2, one in the fall and another in late winter. Parents with children in Grades 3-5 have one scheduled fall conference. The school district is currently reviewing the report grading period and the number of conferences for the elementary schools. Elementary schools generally reserve three afternoons during each conference period for teachers to meet with parents. Students are not invited to attend these scheduled parent conferences. Teachers may, however, choose to schedule conferences at other times with students present. Teachers’ aides are instructed not to discuss students with parents. All communications regarding students’ progress must be addressed with teachers.

Parents are encouraged to contact any teacher or specialist with whom they wish to discuss their child’s progress. Those wishing to speak with a teacher are asked to call the school office or write a note with their request so that a mutually convenient time may be arranged. When leaving a message for a teacher with the school office, it is often helpful to state particular questions and concerns so that the teacher may gather necessary information in order to properly respond. The teacher will return a call as soon as possible. The school psychologist, learning resource teachers, and E.S.L teachers are also available for conferences with concerned parents.

Both custodial and non-custodial parents are entitled to full access to their children’s school records. Non-custodial parents may request written communication such as report cards and notices of parent teacher conferences. Requests should be made in writing and addressed to the principal.

Open HouseAt the beginning of the school year, parents are invited to an Open House to

meet their children’s teacher and see their children’s classroom. At that time, teachers discuss the curriculum, classroom expectations and routines, and homework assignments. In addition, teachers share information about ways in which parents and the teacher may communicate during the year and how parents may work with the teacher to support their child’s learning. Please see the school calendar at the end of this handbook for the date of this year’s Open House.

Lost and FoundMisplaced articles found at school are stored and displayed in the corridor

opposite the Art Room. Properly marked clothing and equipment are easier to identify. Twice yearly, unclaimed clothing will be sent to a local charity.

Safety RegulationsTraffic: Parents are strongly encouraged to walk whenever possible and to drop

children off either at the Circle Driveway or Roosevelt Place. For the safety of our children and to ease the flow of traffic around Edgewood School, the streets surrounding Edgewood School are NO PARKING ON THE SCHOOL SIDE OF THE STREET. This means that no parking will be allowed from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday on all school days. This includes Nelson Road, Edgewood Road, Roosevelt Place and Rodney Road. Parents who must park and enter the school in the morning must find legal parking on the neighboring streets.

Remember, Edgewood School is situated in the midst of a residential area. Please do not block driveways and try to refrain from honking your horn except for safety reasons. Finally, please take special note of the following traffic laws:

– There is a “No Parking” restriction on the north side of Edgewood Road from Roosevelt Place to Post Road. This restriction will be in effect on school days from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. consistent with existing restrictions in the vicinity of the Edgewood School.

– The Village will extend the 15 MPH school speed limit zone on Ferncliff Road to incorporate the area between Drake Road and Edgewood Road

– A “No Parking” restriction will be established on both sides of Tunstall Road from the Edgewood Road intersection to a point 25 feet south. The purpose for this restriction is to improve sight visibility and facilitate turning movements at the intersection.

– The “No Parking or Standing” sign located on the east side of Roosevelt Place, immediately north of the Edgewood Road intersection will be replaced with a “no Standing” sign. As a “No Standing” sign by definition prohibits parking, the existing may be somewhat confusing and it is appropriate that the signage is to be clarified.

1. Edgewood Road is one way between Nelson Road and Roosevelt Place on school days, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

2. Roosevelt Place is always one way.3. It is against the law to pass a stopped school bus from either direction.4. Use extreme caution through Circle Driveway. Do not pass to the right of cars

dropping off children in the drop-off lane.

– Observe all designated handicap parking signs and spaces. There should be no parking in these spots without the proper permits.

Drop-Off: Children should be dropped off and picked up ONLY in Circle Driveway or on the school side of Roosevelt Place, not Edgewood Road. Again, do not pass to the right of cars dropping off children in the drop-off lane in Circle Driveway. Cars should not park or stand in crosswalks, at corners, or in handicapped parking spaces. This causes a dangerous situation for pedestrians and school buses and is inconsiderate to those who are handicapped.

Crossing Guards: School crossing guards are on duty on school days as follows:Site 8:30 – 9:00 2:30 – 3:50Nelson & Rodney X XNelson & Edgewood X XNelson & Boulevard X XBoulevard & Gaylor X XPost & Edgewood X XPost & Boulevard X X

Playground: The well-being of all children mandates the following playground precautions:1. Absolutely no contact activities or games (tackle football or “kill the carrier,” etc.),

roller skates/blades or skate boards, hardballs or snowballing;2. Dogs are not allowed on school grounds;3. The Board of Education prohibits the use of mini-bikes and motorbikes, the flying of

power model airplanes, the driving of golf balls, and the shooting of rockets or fireworks on school grounds at ANY time; and

4. The use of alcohol is prohibited on school grounds by state law.

School SafetyThe safety and security of our children is always a concern to Edgewood School

staff. Our intent is to make children safe and to help them recognize when a situation is not right without being anxious over everyday events in their lives. Each school in Scarsdale has a School Emergency Response Team that receives training several times a year in handling a variety of emergencies, and the staff is confident in its ability to respond to emergencies in a calm and orderly manner when necessary.

The doors of Edgewood School will be locked between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. During these hours, a buzzer system allows parents to enter the building through the Roosevelt Place main door. Sign-in at the main office upon arrival and receive a visitor’s badge. During the school day, kindergartners walk with a buddy when going anywhere inside the building. There is a gradual change in this process beginning in first grade to help children develop independence within the school.

Teachers and other school personnel are instructed to limit student contact to only those adults (staff and sanctioned PTA volunteers) who are working at the school in an official capacity. There should be no interaction between children and adults other than those sanctioned by school staff.

Kindergarten and 1st grade teachers establish procedures for dismissal with parents at the beginning of the school year. At the beginning of each school year all kindergartners and first graders are taught procedures to follow to assist them with potential problems at dismissal. Children are instructed to return to their classroom if they are not met at dismissal by a parent or guardian. If their teacher is not in the classroom, they are taught to go to the office for assistance. Teachers in these grades must be notified if a child is to be dismissed to someone other than his/her parent or guardian.

Parents of children in Grades 2 - 5 should create a dismissal plan with their children and ensure that their teachers understand that plan. If that planned routine changes on any given day, please notify the school.

Empty classrooms should never be entered by anyone who is not a school employee. Teachers and other school personnel are instructed to question strangers and escort them to the office.

Visitors to the SchoolThe doors of Edgewood School will be locked between the hours of 9:00 a.m.

and 2:45 p.m. During these hours, a buzzer system allows parents to enter the building through the Roosevelt Place main door. Sign-in at the main office upon arrival and receive a visitor’s badge.

Bicycle RegulationsThe use of bicycle helmets at all times is now a New York State law. Under PTA

sponsorship, a bicycle safety and testing program is administered at the beginning of the year to third graders and older children who are new to the school or who have new bicycles. Bicycles are checked for fit and safety. Those whose bicycles pass are tested for riding skills and knowledge of safety rules.

Bicycle racks are provided on the school grounds and all bicycles should be locked there during school hours. Bicycles must be walked to and from the racks. Bicycle riding is not permitted on the playground until after 3:30 p.m. on school days.

The Village of Scarsdale has created bike paths which students are encouraged to use. It is against village law to ride a bicycle on any sidewalk in Scarsdale or the Heathcote Shopping Area. The law is designed to protect pedestrians, especially the elderly, and should be strictly adhered to by all students.

Youth Employment Service (Y.E.S.)The Youth Employment Service is a not-for-profit community organization,

staffed entirely by volunteers, which brings together students seeking part-time work with employers in local homes and businesses. All Scarsdale students, aged 14 and older, including college students home on vacation, are eligible to use the services of Y.E.S. Students work as tutors, baby-sitters, party aides, sales clerks, snow removers, and fill a variety of other positions listed through the office. Prospective employers are invited to call the Y.E.S. office at 723-7343 where a message may be left at any time. School OrganizationsBoard of Education: The Scarsdale Union Free School District consists of five

elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Thomas Hagerman, serves as the chief school officer for the village-elected Scarsdale Board of Education. The Superintendent of Schools carries out the policies formulated and approved by the Board.

The Scarsdale Board of Education sets the policies for control and operation of Scarsdale Schools. It consists of seven unpaid members who are elected at the annual school district election. They each serve overlapping three-year terms.

Board of Education meetings this year will be held every two weeks alternating Wednesday mornings and Monday evenings in rooms 170-172, Scarsdale High School. Meetings cover all aspects of the running of Scarsdale Schools. They are always open to the public and interested citizens are encouraged to attend. Meetings are broadcast on Cable TV Channel 77 and Verizon FIOS Channel 27.

The Board of Education newsletter “Insight” is mailed to all Scarsdale residents. It discusses educational policy, new programs, state and federal legislation affecting the district and other educational issues. The Board presents an annual proposed school budget and mails a budget summary to each household every spring prior to the annual budget vote.

You may contact the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Schools, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 721-2400.

Scarsdale Council of PTAs: The Scarsdale Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (P.T. Council) is the umbrella organization for the various Scarsdale P.T.A. units at each of Scarsdale’s schools. It is a separate entity, with its own elected officers and committees. The membership is drawn from teachers, parents, and administrators from each school. A representative from each school P.T.A. serves as a liaison between the P.T. Council and the respective P.T.A. units.

The P.T. Council presents speakers and programs that are of interest to the entire P.T.A. community. Its standing committees assist in providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and educational topics. It also sponsors the “Young Writers Conference” for third, fourth, and fifth graders which is held at the Middle School in the spring, and will host its first STEAM event for fourth, fifth and sixth graders in the fall. Meeting dates for the P.T. Council may be found on the district master calendar.

The Compact for Learning: New York State has mandated the development of a site-based management team for every school in the state. This New Compact for Learning reform initiative is intended to provide the opportunity for parents, teachers and administrators to join together and collectively make decisions about educational issues of concern to each building. The three teachers on this year’s committee are Michelle Mangiamele, Nicole Meyer, and Julie Abbe. The parent representatives are Katie Rich, Edith Cornelissen, and Kelly Sperling. As principal, Dr. Scott Houseknecht also joins this committee.

Special Instructional and Support ProgramsThe Edgewood staff is comprised of many talented and highly trained educators.

In addition to classroom teachers, students receive instruction and support from teachers who specialize in particular disciplines.

Art with Mr. Matt Fitzpatrick: All students participate in art class at least once in a six day cycle. Art in the elementary schools fosters the development of individual ability by increasing artistic skills, improving visual sensitivity, and teaching the academic language of art. Elementary students develop confidence in making personal aesthetic choices as they are introduced to the study of art history. Students learn to respect and value the efforts of others as they explore a variety of media.

Computer with Mr. Tomizawa: Students in Kindergarten through fifth grades receive computer instruction. Students will learn computer and research skills that enhance their understanding of other curriculum content and assist them in presenting the information they have learned.

ESL (English as a Second or Other Language) with Ms. Malula Gonzalez: Children whose home language is other than English are screened for E.S.L. services under the guidelines set by New York State. Additionally, students meeting language requirements, who are referred by classroom teachers, staff, or parents are also screened. Students who qualify for support services under state mandates receive supplemental instruction in English reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students

Foreign Language in Elementary Schools (F.L.E.S.) with Ms. Lisa Houston: First, second, third, and fourth graders will learn Spanish this year as part of the District’s F.L.E.S. program. They will receive 80 minutes of instruction in each six day cycle from Ms. Lisa Houston, Edgewood’s elementary Spanish teacher. Ms. Houston will collaborate with grade level teachers to integrate her instruction with the English language arts, social studies, math and science lessons that are part of the first and second grade curriculum. The goals of the F.L.E.S. program are to help children: (1) become proficient in listening and speaking, (2) develop a sense of cultural awareness, and (3) acquire some proficiency in reading and writing.

Instrumental Music with Ms. Connie Leviatin and Mr. Enrique Orengo: Instrumental music begins for all students in third grade. During the first trimester, third graders receive two lessons on each of four instruments: violin, cello, clarinet and baritone horn. After that exploratory period, the students select one of the four instruments. They continue with that instrument for the remainder of third grade and receive one lesson a week on that instrument.

In fourth and fifth grades students are encouraged, but not required, to continue with the instrument they chose in third grade. Small group instruction is available, and the teaching utilizes an ensemble approach. Students receive weekly group lessons during the regular school day. Each school’s band and orchestra rehearses before school one day a week. Bands, orchestras and choruses perform two concerts during the school year.

Although music exists as an independent discipline with its own curriculum, it is also integrated into the entire educational program, providing an additional dimension to the students’ view of life and all the aspects by which it is interpreted and affected.

Library – Media Center with Ms. Anne Stokes: All students attend library class at least once a week. Here they are introduced to literature, research, library skills, and the use of multiple media equipment. In addition, the library is open for student use throughout the day. The librarian, assistant and many parent volunteers process and maintain our holdings and assist students with book selections.

Learning Center with Mrs. Bevin Pagel and Mrs. Julie Abbe: The Learning Resource Center (“LRC”) provides supplemental and remedial support for those children who meet district criteria to receive assistance with reading, writing, mathematics and organizational skills. The LRC teachers provide an effective, supportive, collaborative program for students in need of academic support. In addition, the LRC teachers conduct both formal and informal educational evaluations to determine student strengths and weaknesses so that appropriate remedial support

or intervention may be provided. LRC teachers work closely with classroom teachers and parents. Services are provided on the building level through the Committee of Special Education.

Physical Education with Mr. Jeffrey Weigel and Mr. Devin Hoover. All students attend physical education classes. Individual and group activities are used at all levels to develop individual physical skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Cooperative rather than competitive activities are stressed. Classes are conducted both in the gym and on the playing field.

Psychologist – Dr. Janelle Brown: The school psychologist works closely with teachers, parents, and students to give support to them with all aspects of developmental growth. The psychologist meets with and screens all children as they enter kindergarten. She is available for consultation with all parents. You may call the main office for an appointment.

Speech and Language with Mrs. Ellen Fiorella: The speech and language specialist provides evaluation and remediation of speech, voice, fluency, language, and communication skills. All students in Grades K-3 as well as all students who are new to the district are screened annually to identify students with special language needs. All students who are referred by classroom teachers, staff, parents, and private practitioners are also screened. Priority services are given to qualifying students whose language difficulties fall within New York State regulations. Services are provided at the building level through the Committee of Special Education. The speech and language therapist may be reached through the main office.

Vocal Music with Ms. Lisa Forte and Mr. Andrew Brown: The music program follows a sequential format based on the musical elements of rhythm, harmony, melody, structure, and musical expression. In the primary grades, the focus is on rhythm and melody. Children are actively engaged in listening, singing, moving, composing, and playing classroom instruments. Examples, taken from the music of many cultures, provide opportunities for expression and increase knowledge about music in various parts of the world.

Although music exists as an independent discipline with its own curriculum, it is also integrated into the entire educational program, providing an additional dimension to the student’s view of life and all of the various aspects by which it is interpreted and affected.

Students in Grades K through 4 receive vocal music instruction for two periods in each six day cycle. Students in Grade 5 receive vocal music instruction for one period in each six day cycle. Students in Grades 4 and 5 participate in a grade-level chorus. Several musical performances are held during the school year.

It is a service organization, non-commercial and non-profit, and those who participate in it share an interest in quality education for children. The PTA forms the base of a pyramid that works up through the Scarsdale Council of PTAs (PT Council), the Westchester District PTA, and the New York State and National Congresses of Parents and Teachers.

The PTA’s annual budget seeks only sufficient revenue to cover necessary expenses and to support on-going programs. This revenue is derived from membership dues ($26.00 per family) and from various Ways and Means activities, which include a special Spring Fair, traditionally held the Saturday before Mother’s Day. Our budget is distributed and voted upon at our Fall general meeting.

A news article should appear in the Edgewood Extra after any meeting which emphasized those issues on the minds of elementary school parents.

Theme Night: Plans and coordinates an evening academic family event. The theme is relevant to some part of the school curriculum. Activities are geared to K-5. It is a fun evening lasting approx. 1 ½ - 2 hours and it is held every other year. Hoping to move to the Fall.

Walking School Bus: Coordinates the Walking School Bus on Friday mornings in the fall and spring.

Young Writers Conference: A PT Council event held in April for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders throughout Scarsdale. Acts as the Edgewood liaison and attends a PT council meeting sometime in the winter. The main goal of the Edgewood liaison is to procure parent volunteers to help out on the day of the conference.
