Come enjoy a great dining experience Pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers urged to stay alert (Submitted by the Michigan Department of State) As summer kicks into high gear, more Michigan residents will be out walking, jogging or riding bicycles. Everyone is encouraged to watch for traffic dangers and remember some simple safety tips. In 2009, Michigan reported 118 pedestrian deaths. In addition, a report from the Michigan Automobile Association of America says that nearly 96 percent of bicycle deaths result from crashes with motor vehicles. About 47 percent of all bicycle crashes occur off the road, in driveways and on sidewalks. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, alcohol was involved in 48 percent of all pedestrian fatalities, whether it was the driver or the pedestrian. Drivers are also urged to watch out for children. In 2009, 17 percent of the bicyclists injured in motor vehicle accidents were 14 years old or younger. Pedestrians: • Cross at designated crosswalks and look both ways, then look left again before crossing, • Come to the edge of a parked vehicle and look around it before entering the street • Increase your visibility: use a flashlight, wear reflective clothing • Walk on the side of the road facing traffic if no sidewalk Bicyclists: Obey the rules of the road • Wear safety helmets and reflective clothing • Stay as far to the right as practical in traffic lanes and ride in the same direction as other traffic • Have a front headlight and a rear reflector Drivers: Turn on your headlights • Look out for and yield the right-of-way to people walking, jogging, biking, or crossing a street in the middle of a block. • Pull out slowly from driveways and parking areas • Stop fully before turning right on a red traffic light • Yield to anyone crossing the street if turning left on a green light.• Sports camps registration open now at Maranatha (Submitted by Maranatha Bible & Missionary Conference Grounds) Maranatha Bible and Missionary Conference Grounds, 4759 Lake Harbor Road, is holding sports camps for boys and girls ages 7 to 16. Each camp meets daily from 9:30 a.m. to noon for five days this summer. Each camp is led by a trained Christian professional with a biblical perspective. Registration is required. There is a $25 fee (in advance) per camper, which includes a sports New Testament, a tee shirt, and a certificate of completion. A $35 fee is charged if your camper is not registered in advance. United Methodist Church of the Dunes is located at 717 Sheldon Road in Grand Haven. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on August 13 and from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on August 14. Baskets made from honeysuckle vines and creek willows, woven and braided rugs, handmade dolls, corn-shuck items, pottery, candles, jewelry, jams, jellies, note cards, history and recipe books, wooden crafts, and woven placemats will all be featured items at the event. All proceeds will benefit the Mission’s Faith Fund, which improved general living conditions for the underserved throughout Appalachia. The fund provides for home repairs, training for children needing a healthy start in life, feeding the hungry, and caring for the elderly with dignity and Christian joy. Red Bird Mission is celebrating 90 years of ministry in the southeastern Kentucky mountains. The mission has a school, medical center, community outreach, community housing improvement, and economic opportunities. The funds raised in the event will benefit people in an area where unemployment is at 50 percent. The purpose of the Red Bird Mission is to empower individuals and advocate justice by providing spiritual, educational, health and community outreach ministries.•
