Initssecondsuccessfulyearandunderthethemeof‘GreenandFuturistic’,TolgaTekinfromTurkey’sMarmaraUniversityinIstanbulwasawardedfirstplacebyskillfullyamalgamatingbasicinterpretationsofsandandwaterwithinnovativeenergysolutions.Inadditiontowinningafully-paidone-monthinternshipatDubai-baseddesignfirmX-Architects,Tekinalsoreceived$5,000incashandanLGOptimussmartphone.
Whenaskedhowhefelt,excited22-yearoldTekinsaid,“IstillcannotbelieveIamholdingthisaward–Iamontopoftheworldandnow,amevenmoreconfidentthatIwillbeasuccessfuldesignerwhocanmakeadifference.IthankLGfromthebottomofmyheartforthisopportunityandallowingmetorealisemydream.”
The1strunnerupwasalsofromTurkey-SerdarSoyalfromMimarSinanFineArtsUniversityinIstanbulwhilethesecondrunnerupprizewenttoKarynSchottfromGreensideDesignCenterinJohannesburg,SouthAfrica.InadditiontoanLGOptimussmartphone,theywerebothawardedwith$3,000and$2,000incashrespectivelyfromLG.
CommentingonthehighlevelsofcreativityandtalentshowcasedattheLGConceptualifecompetition,Mr.K.W.Kim,President,LGElectronics,MEARegion,said:“Itwasadifficulttasktopickthetopthreedesigns.WehadapowerhouseoftalentandLGisproudtoprovideaforumforthesegiftedstudentstoshowcasetheirskill.Mostofthedesignswerepresentedasconceptsbutitisonlyamatteroftimebeforethesefuturisticgreenkitchensolutionsarerecognizedandadopted.IampleasedtoseehowwellouraspiringdesignersoftomorrowunderstandtheimportanceofanenvironmentallysoundkitchendesignandapplianceswhichisalsooneofLG’skeyobjectives.”
Eachofthe12finalistswereinvitedtopresentandexplaintheirkitchendesignconceptstoanexpertpanelwhoevaluatedtheirworkbasedonuniquenessofdesignandintegrationofinnovativegreenfeatures,optimumutilizationofkitchenspace,environmentalfriendliness,usageofmaterialsandfunctionality.TheexpertpanelofjudgesconsistedofK.W.Kim,President,LGElectronics,MEARegion;AhmedAlAli,FounderandExecutiveChairmanofX-ArchitectsandAnnieCudmore,EditorofInsideOutMagazine.
“IparticularlylikedTolgaTekin’sdesign,asitintegratedtechnologywithcutting-edgedesignalbeitwithahumantouch.Ifeltthisdesignwasthemostapplicableanditwouldbeveryinterestingtopush
thisconceptforward,”addedX-ArchitectsAhmedAlAli.
“Eventhoughthecontestantswerefromsixdifferentcountries,itwasveryinterestingtoseesimilarthemesrunningthroughallthedesigns,suchasindoorgardensandintegratedapplianceswithfunctionalitybeingkey,”commentedpanellist,AnnieCudmore.
LGConceptualifewasestablishedin2010asanannualeventtoprovideupandcomingdesignstudentswithanoutlettodemonstratetheirtalentandharnesstheircreativitybyshowcasingthefutureofkitchendesignandappliances.Drawinghundredsofentriesfromacrosstheregion,thefinalesawsubmissionsnarrowedtothetop12entries.
