Lessons from the Mall

There are several good things about being stuck in Medicine Hat for a few days. First, thehotel bed is very comfortable and second the mall is right across the street. With so muchsnow, the mall is the only logical place to walk so Ive been there several times. Enoughtimes to become curious about it. Thats always dangerous.

The mall comprises many small retail outlets and three large department stores. To ward off

cabin fever, I walked through every one of these places many times over the period of aweek. There was a lot of merchandise to examine and the sales were in full swing. I couldnthelp noticing a few things. Absolutely none of the clothing was manufactured in Canada, orthe United States for that matter. None of the footwear was either. Nor was any of the jew-ellery. And virtually none of the personal and household electronics and furnishings. Theonly thing Canadian about the mall was the service and it was pathetically uninviting. Thegoods on offer were by and large cheap looking, made of thin material and doomed to beshort-lived. Turnover is the essence here. Charge relatively little, give even less in returnand keep the consumer coming back for lots more in replacement. Excluding the departmentstores, there are more than 15 clothing stores. Theres no exceptional choice of goodsamong them. Theyre just all squatting there like a cluster of Venus fly traps waiting for theunwary victim. But, whats really happening here?

Whats happening is that were setting ourselves up to be consistently bled no differently

than the Massai bleed their herds of cattle. The cattle are willing and so are we. The result isthat were stripping off our currency in exchange for the entertainment we get from cheaplymade junk. Countries economically on the rise in the Far East are collecting a big slice ofthe profits and, in turn, are re-investing in our unending debt and buying cement to buildtheir new cities, gathering technology and focusing on education for their people. In short,were on the losing end. Even more so, were handing it away as fast as we possibly can.The purchase of Manhattan island in exchange for beads and trinkets was small in com-parison to this.

So thats the national view from the mall. Whats the world view from China? Theyrebuilding 100 new cities. Some, like Tianjin Eco-City, are planned to be green beyond anyexisting metropolis. True, other cities like Yutian are choking on pollution but you cantdeny that China is actively looking at unconventional ways to make major accomplish-ments. Dont kid yourself; theyre doing this with our money. By comparison, where are

our new cities? pg. 4

Draft Official Community Plan Now Available

In November, 2010 an evening presentation was held to acquaint people with aworking copy of the Official Community Plan for the Town of Eastend. Thedraft copy of this document is now available for public access on the internetthrough Scheffer Andrew (www.schefferandrewcom/default.aspx?page=47). Itprovides an overall approach to guide future planning and development, bothresidential and industrial. It designates land that could reasonably be expected tobe used for future growth and defines limitations that must be considered. Itidentifies commercial areas as opposed to residential. Maps appended to the endof the document present Location, Constraints, Growth Concept, Community

Services, Services and Transportation, and Future Town Growth Concept.

The Draft will be presented at the Town Council meeting in February and, ifapproved, will then go forward for Provincial acceptance. The documents maybe accompanied with a set of Zoning By Laws that are referenced in the DraftOCP but not elaborated on there.

The Draft OCP touches on many pertinent areas of community concern. It spe-cifically identifies the need for a desirable gateway as an entrance into theTown. A concern that many residents have expressed as an item for improve-ment. The Draft also states as one of our Municipal Goals the requirement toprovide safe potable water to all town residents; a condition which is not cur-rently available but should be addressed. The Draft further discusses the con-straints we face in identifying land for development that would meet the require-

ment of being above the Flood Plane.Take the opportunity to become familiar with this document and come to theTown Council meeting in February for more information. JK

The problem isnt China. The problem isus. For example, while Tianjins city willhave acres of wind turbines I have to ask,where is ours. I mean even one. Not on aprovincial basis but right here in town.We cant even co-operate to fix our side-walks. How backward looking have webecome? We have access to considerable

resources but no will to employ them. IfChina is building cities why cant werebuild ours?

We are about to vote an Official Commu-nity Plan into place. The plan is predi-cated on the idea that we want the townto thrive and prosper. We want to suc-ceed. Its our opportunity to be a bit un-conventional. If we keep doing whatweve always done and keep thinkinglike weve always thought were going tokeep re-inventing the 1960s. However,we can choose to have a different future.

We must examine ways to invest in our-selves and go beyond short-term think-ing. We can choose to be unique andincorporate new ideas and technology inour development. We can salvage our-selves from the national malaise of deep-seated mediocrity. We need creativethinking to revitalize Eastend. How canwe use technology and incorporate eco-logical advantage to attract businessesand residents? If we strive to be differentfrom other towns we will grow and benoticed. And, our children will have a

prosperous future right here. Lets get outof the mall mentality and make some-thing different happen. JK

Authors for Enjoyment

Two authors have been writing series of excellent novels that you might enjoy. Both areavailable through the Chinook Library system. Try these:

Robert Goddard - born in Hampshire, England and graduated from Peter-house College, Cambridge where he read History. Since 1986 he has beenregularly producing books that have edge-of-seat pacing and labyrinthineplotting. There are currently 22 novels to choose from and each makes anintriguing read. His plots entwine complex stories with historical eventsand figures, somewhat reminiscent of thrillers by Ken Follett. His use of

language is better than average.Beyond Recall was nominated for an EdgarAward in 1999.

Jonathan King - a journalist for 20 years, began his career at the Phila-delphia Daily News. He has covered crime and criminal courts and is nowa national award-winning feature writer for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. His Max Freemen series now comprises 6 books, the most recentbeing Midnight Guardians. He has produced 2 other stand alone novelsand a collection of short stories.A Visible Darkness (one of the Max Free-man series) was nominated for a Shamus Award in 2004. The novels havegood background, clever plotting and a twisty pace that keeps you reading.
