It has been interesting to talk with other local schools about their approach to this issue, which generates considerable conversation. One local school I spoke with discourages scooters and another larger neighbouring school currently allows them. However the school is considering changing this due to numerous complaints from the public about the manner in which students ride their scooters on footpaths and the school itself has informed students that they must wheel rather than ride their scooter on certain streets. There have also been scooter thefts from the school grounds and this is becoming a problem. We have checked with businesses who produce scooter racks and these cost in the vicinity of $750 for a rack that would securely hold ten scooters, which is quite a considerable cost. We are also currently checking our other possible alternatives. We will be discussing the issue further at our Board planning meeting next week. 2013 Boys’ Class Thank you to the families who attended our meeting last week and to Jenny Tong and Brian Coleman for leading and speaking at the meeting. There has once again been considerable interest in the class; Jenny Tong will be in contact with the families of students who have been selected for this class once the process is completed; this will be by the end of the week. Once again, there were more applicants than places available. However, learning conditions for boys (as well as girls!) continues as a priority for teacher professional development next year. Lovely to see our students with such a high profile! Next issue: 7 December 2012

Message from the Principal

Kia ora, Kia orana, Namaste, Talofa lava, Malo e

lelei, Ni hao ma, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Asalam alikum!

Welcome

A warm welcome to all new families who have started

at Edendale this week! We are delighted that you

have joined our school family and look forward to

getting to know you all.

Survey: Students and Scooters at School

Thank you to the families who have responded to our

survey to date. The survey will remain open until the

end of next week. To date most responses have been

from families with children in our junior school. It has

been interesting to talk with other local schools about

their approach to this issue, which generates

considerable conversation.

One local school I spoke with discourages scooters

and another larger neighbouring school currently

allows them. However the school is considering

changing this due to numerous complaints from the

public about the manner in which students ride their

scooters on footpaths and the school itself has

informed students that they must wheel rather than

ride their scooter on certain streets. There have also

been scooter thefts from the school grounds and this

is becoming a problem.

We have checked with businesses who produce

scooter racks and these cost in the vicinity of $750 for

a rack that would securely hold ten scooters, which is

quite a considerable cost. We are also currently

checking our other possible alternatives. We will be

discussing the issue further at our Board planning

meeting next week.

2013 Boys’ Class

Thank you to the families who attended our meeting

last week and to Jenny Tong and Brian Coleman for

leading and speaking at the meeting. There has once

again been considerable interest in the class; Jenny

Tong will be in contact with the families of students

who have been selected for this class once the

process is completed; this will be by the end of the

week.

Once again, there were more applicants than places

available. However, learning conditions for boys (as

well as girls!) continues as a priority for teacher

professional development next year.

Choir at the Town Hall

It was a real treat to watch our school choir perform

at the Town Hall last Wednesday evening. They looked

and sounded wonderful! Our talented Teri-Ann

represented us, Letele and Faith had solo parts to

perform and our Marimba group accompanied the

singers during their two songs on the night. Lovely to

see our students with such a high profile! Special

thanks to Whaea Roshan who has given our students

outstanding tuition this year in a number of musical

areas and also to Catherine Oxenham for her

continued support for our choir and music at

Edendale. We really appreciate your participation and

assistance.

Edendale Student Code

I am an Edendale student. Therefore, I show respect to everyone; I am kind to others; I behave in a sensible way. I

take care of my school, my belongings and the environment. I am honest and reliable; I am responsible for my

actions. I have fun with my learning; I participate at school and try my very best!

Garden To Table

We would like to say a big thank you to Joana Wilzek for her kitchenware donation and Kathy White for donating the funky kitchen scales, they are both much appreciated. Wild animals about! The Year 3 classes have been learning about plants and how their seeds disperse. To demonstrate this, the children dropped paper ‘whirly seeds’ to demonstrate how some seeds are spread by flying while others wore socks and ran around school acting like wild animals! The socks mimicked animal fur, accidentally picking up seeds and transporting it to new locations. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about plants. Parsnip harvest Our main harvest in the last two weeks has been the parsnips; they were so big that Jodie had to use a garden fork to dig them up, as she couldn’t pull them out of the ground. The classes must have

done a very good job in planting them, as supposedly parsnips don’t grow very well in Auckland. Once the parsnips made their way up to the kitchen, we cooked and

pureed them to make muffins! Yes muffins. Sarah experimented with the recipe until she got it right. Parsnip, orange and sunflower seed muffins, drizzled with bush honey. They were surprisingly delicious, and the classes loved making them. Jodie, Sarah and Kim

Pouring Rain

Heavy rain is brushing through the sky.

Oh, I wish the hushing would stop irritating you and I.

Lakes are filling up and the sky is getting dry.

Streams are getting bigger, we are bored you and I.

everything is wet, the sun is coming up.

Now the rain is evaporating, there's less to fill a cup.
