    A. Summary of the Lesson Plan:This social studies lesson is designed for 4th grade students to learn about the Easts natural

    resources and discusses a market economy using the fourth grade Houghton Mifflin Social

    Studies textbook, States and Regions. (Pages 78-83)

    B. Target Population: Grade Level: 4th Grade

    Skill Level: Students at all learning levels

    Grouping: whole group reading & discussions, independent for activity and assessment

    C. Materials:D. Vocabulary & Study Guide (Unit Resources pg. 24)- 30 copiesE. Reteach Mini lesson (graphic organizer 7 pg. 83)F. Houghton Mifflin 4th grade social studies book: States and Regions (p. 78-83)G. Paper and pencils

    H. Objectives:

    NV State Social Studies Standards Economics 9.0 - The Market Economy - Students willunderstand how scarcity and incentives affect choices, how markets work, why markets form, howsupply and demand interact to determine the market price, and how changes in prices act aseconomic signals to coordinate trade.

    E9.4.1Give examples of incentives and determine whether they are positive

    or negative.

    E9.4.3AGive reasons why producers choose to sell more or less of a good or

    service, i.e., based on prices or current economic situations

    E9.4.1 Students will know what a Economy Market is and the positive and

    negative of how they work.

    Ask the students how they would set up a lemonade stand.

    Introduce vocabulary (market economy, profit, human resources, capital resources))

    As a class, read pg. 78-83, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of TE(pg. 79, 89,81,82, )

    Students should take notes and record information on their Study Guide while we read;

    they can continue working on their Study Guide when we finish reading.

    Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding.

    (TE79 ) What natural resources are located in the East?

    (TE79) How are the forest of the East used?

    (TE 79) How are coal and stone used in the east?

    (TE 79) Why is the Atlantic Ocean an important natural resource of the East?

    (TE 80) What is a market economy? (TE80) How are natural recourses used in a market economy?

    Discuss with your group-Critical Thinking? Encourage students to think about the

    differences between a market economy and a command economy,

    I know that in a command economy, the government decides how business will be

    run, I also know that in a market economy, individuals make the decisions about their

    businesses. It seems to me that a nation that has a market economy has greater

    freedom than the one that has command economy. When people feel free to make

    their own decisions they enjoy a greater level of independence.

    CLOSURE: Discuss the five statements on Review/Assess (TE 83) Encourage students tobe involved in the lesson and to ask about the things they do not understand,

    J. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?

    For homework the students will pick one resource from the East and write two

    paragraphs about it to share in class.

    Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson

    Students will share their paragraphs at each group. Teacher will walk around silentlyand listen.

    K. Reflection:1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach?

    I think the easiest part of the lesson to teach will be reading and discussing the

    lesson.

    2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?

    The most challenging part will be to explain what natural resources are and how

    they are important it is for us to protect them.3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

    I think it would be fun to do a class business, Have the students plan, make things, sell

    things and then use the money for something for the school.

    4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

    For the students who are having a difficult time with the concepts I will work with them

    in a small group at my back table and reteach by helping them complete their

    assessments.

    5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

    I would like to see how the students work in their groups and maybe it will be time have

    new teams.

    6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?

    Once again assessment is always the most challenging because I want to have some

    types of East assessments so I can grade it and get their grades back to them.
