first few years of the Civil War using the 5th grade social studies
textbook: Houghton Mifflin: United States History, pages 452-457
H 2.5.2- Describe issues of compromise and conflict within the
United States.
Students will identify important early battles and events of the Civil
War.
Have example of short story and illustration for students to
reference.
Need computer paper or construction paper and colored
pencils for activity.

2 This is the second lesson of chapter 13 in the second portion of the Civil War unit. Students will focus on how soldiers coped with camp life and how civilians on the home front coped with the war. The Houghton Mifflin 5th grade Social Studies textbook: United
States History, pages 460-463 will be used.

United States.
Students will describe conditions that soldiers faced during the Civil
War.
Students will explain how the war affected both soldiers and people on
the home fronts.
Need computer or construction paper and colored pencils at table
groups for activity.

Students will be able to identify different plans for reuniting the
country and the importance of the Reconstruction.
Need extra loose-leaf paper for writing activity.

and continual challenges after the Reconstruction. The 5th grade
Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook: United States History, pages 482-485 will be used for
this lesson.

States.
Students will be able to explain in detail the end of the Reconstruction
period and the effects it had on various groups of people.
Poster paper and loose-leaf paper for “Extend” activity.

Students will review all material they have learned in the past 2 weeks about the Civil War and Reconstruction. The 5th grade
Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook: United States History, pages 448-449 and 488-491 will
be used for the review.

Students will review information learned throughout the Civil War
and Reconstruction in preparation for the Unit test.
Make 30 copies of chapter 12 and 13 tests for unit assessment.
