A relative newcomer to the industry Ed Sheeran burst onto the scene with his huge hit ‘The A Team’ which

totally went viral on youtube. Understandably so because it’s pure emotive bliss with beautiful guitar strums,

piano melancholy and not to mention Sheeran’s amazing voice, I believe is a cut above most mainstream artists

these days! Other hits include the popular ‘Lego House’ which again captures Sheeran’s talent for analogising

with precision, life’s daily struggles and the light that can shine through when seen from the right perspective.

He even busts a little rap for good measure that’s a nice treat whilst not detracting from the melody and flow of

the core of the song. ‘You Need Me, I Don’t Need You’ is a really catchy tune that’s a direct stab at Sheeran’s

falling out with his previous manager and what he lost in the split. A very concise and intelligent track that

doesn’t pull any punches so to speak, which has a cool hip hop feel to it too. ‘Small Bump’ is a beautiful guitar

driven track with some of the best lyrics to date which capture the joy, wonder and pain of pregnancy, hopeful

birth and an eventual miscarriage. One of my personal favourites seeing as I have a cute 15 month old. On a

funny note, Ed bears a striking resemblance to the ginger haired Ron Weasley (Harry Potter’s best friend) but of

course he sings much better. With 12 tracks to enjoy, this is one album that would be a very welcome addition

to your collection.(MR)

Carrie Underwood: Blown Away

This is superstar Carrie Underwood’s 4th studio album and boy was I surprised, but is that entirely a good thing? I

was shocked by her new song, ‘Before He Cheats’ which has a classic country feel to it and Underwood’s clean,

powerful and pure voice but the joy stops there. It’s a song about Carrie finding out her boyfriend has cheated on

her, she then takes a baseball bat to his 4 wheel drive and smashes it whilst carving her name on the leather

seats with a knife but it doesn’t stop there… she finishes off by keying the car! This is definitely not the same

Carrie that sang one of my favourite songs ‘Jesus Take the Wheel’ a few years back. ‘Cupids Got a Shotgun’ is a

real Honky Tonk fast paced jamboree song with some cool guitar solos and violins thrown in for good measure,

but with that said I think it’s pretty lame overall because the music still can’t make up for the ridiculous lyrics.

‘Good Girl’ is about a naive girl who’s fallen for the wrong guy and Underwood comes through as the so called

wiser friend who tells her to put on her goodbye shoes and walk away. Have you noticed a trend here, it seems

like an album of pain and regret and anger towards men in general? Any way there are 14 tracks on this album

and I’ll be a good man and put on my goodbye shoes whilst walking away from this album permanently. (MR)
