On the following pages, you will learn about the needs of a
teenage parent and her child. The child will be giving you ideas,
needs, and growth expectations during the first year of a child's
life.
For each month you will find a section which contains ways of
helping you become a new parent.
You may read all twelve months or pick the months that are of
interest to you.
Most teenage mothers want to be good parents, and they can,
with a few skill-building guidelines. Hopefully, this booklet will
meet just that need.

Dear Mom,
I have written this booklet to help you get use to me and my
needs.
The thought of bringing me home may scare you, but don't be
alarmed. After all, our entire family situation is about to
undergo a dramatic change.
Parenting is one of the most important roles in life but, all
too often, it is the one for, which you have had the least
experience. Although I love my grandparents very much, I need the
closeness that only you can give me through your soothing voice and
gentle touch.
Some teenage moms say they wanted a baby so they would have
someone that loved them. "I do love you Mom, but I am a lot of
work." At first you will give me more love than I can give you.
Being a mother at any age is not easy. But 'being a young
mother is harder, so take care of yourself by:
*Visiting the doctor regularly.*Eating properly.*Exercising but not "too hard" at first.*Preventing a repeat pregnancy, as your body needs 2-4 yearsto recuperate after having me.
*Continuing your education. You will feel much happier if youcoMplete this goal. Remember, there are agencies that willgive me "free" child care if you stay in school.
I will show you in the upcoming pages how easy I am to care
for if you give me proper attention and an overflowing amount of
love. With your parental care, I will get a good start in life.

What's Happening To You This Month
The excitement of childbirthhas begun! Although I am nolonger inside your body, otherchanges are occurring insideyou. You may have feelings ofjoy, relief, shock, and/or"after-baby blues." Don'tworry, these feelings arenormal and your "blues" won'tlast forever.
When you feel lonely, sad,
angry or tied down, it helps totalk to someone - a friend,another teen mom, or Grandma.
The first time you are withme, take time to look at mybody - my toes, my fingernails,and my eyes. Don't be afraidto ask questions about me.Try holding me in different

positions to see what iscomfortable. Touch me and holdme close to you - this is howwe can show our love to eachother. Each time we aretogether you will learn moreabout me.
Within a few hours of mybirth, you will recognize mycries as if you have been withme during much of that time.The more you know, the morecomfortable you will feel withme when we are alone.
Don't forget to pamperyourself - a bubble bath, a napwhen I'm sleeping, or yourfavorite music. You are themost important person in mylife and I want you happy, too.

Before I leave the hospital, I need a car seat for the ride
home and for use whenever I go in the car. I also need someplace
to sleep, like a crib, bassinet, or cradle. I prefer to snuggle in
small, confined areas with sides in an attempt to recreate your
womb. Some of the other items I need are listed below:

What's Happening
Most parents have never seena newborn baby before. Prepareyourself because I don't wantto surprise or concern you, butI won't look like a cherub!Some say I look old - otherssay I'm unproportioned. Myhead may look too large andmaybe lopsided from thepressures o.! delivery. My skinmay be red, loose, and scaling;my nose may be flat; and rarelydo I open my eyes. But give mea few days - I'll change.
The typical pattern of mydevelopment is from my headdownward to the rest of mybody, and from the center of mybody outward. Usually, I will:
*Be born with blue eyes, butthe color may change.
*Have a soft spot on top ofmy head which will closeat 18 months.
*Roll over before I learn to
crawl.*Use my big muscles before I
use my small ones (neck,
arms, waist, legs, andback). When you hold orlift me, please support myneck and back with yourhand and arm - my musclesare quite weak.
*Grab hold of things before Ilearn to let go.
*Reach for things before Ihold on to them.
*Make funny noises before Ilearn to talk.
*Stand up by holding on tosomething before I walk.
My ears, back, and shouldersare furry, but this willdisappear in a few months. Myeyelids are puffy, but I seesimple patterns and best at 8-10 inches. There are a lot ofthings to notice about me isn't

I'm almost done!
I urinate 18 times a day, soyou may want to change me 8times daily, so diaper rashdoesn't begin. Ohl / forgot!My bowels also move 4-7 times aday at birth, but I go less asI get older.
I will enjoy movement when Iam older, but at birth I preferlooking at objects that arestill. When I'm two weeks old,I will know your smell, andyour touch. At one month, Iwill recognize you by sight -see how important you are to
me!

PLAYTIME
I can have all the fun in the
world with safe toys andobjects, and have less chanceof hurting myself. At birth,my toys need not to be includedbut if others want to buy mesomething, ask for simplerattles, teethers, squeezetoys, interlocking plasticrings, clutch balls, non-breakable mirrors and soft babydolls in bright colors andsimple designs.
Until older, I will play inmy bed. Please have a paddedlining on the inside of my bedas I may get my head caughtbetween the bed slats.
CRIES
I cry for many reasons andnot always will you know why,since I can't talk. When Icry, I'm saying that I needyour help to make mecomfortable again. I'll nevercry because I'm mad, jealous,or because I want to get backat you - I don't know thesefeelings. My cries aredifferent, as you see below:
*If my cry begins as a shrillscream followed by a shortsilence and gasps, maybe I'vebumped my head or been jabbedby a diaper pin. In eithercase, I know you'll check meover and cuddle me on yourshoulder and maybe even rock mefor a while.
*When my cries start slowlyand build to a loud, demandingrhythm, this usually means "Iwant to eat." I will gethungry at irregular timesduring my first months, sodon't get upset if I have ahunger cry every two hours

instead of four, as the babybook says. Even if you justgive me a snack, I can cuddlewith you, or rock with you, andI love how you tell me you feelabout me.
*Another cry I might have maybe a "fussy" cry. When I'mtired or have been held by alltwenty-five aunts, uncles, andcousins, I may have a forcedcry. If you cuddle me, give mea tour of the house, or spend afew minutes talking to me, I'msure I will settle down.Sometimes, I might likeswinging in my wind-up babyswing, if you are too busy oryou can give me a pacifier toquiet my fussiness.
*If I repeatedly draw my legsup and then straighten themwhile crying, I probably have astomach ache. Try burping me -this may release the bubble inmy tummy.
I'm sure others have told younot to answer every one of mycries - that I will be spoiledand become more demanding.This is not the case. When youanswer my cries, I am learningto trust you and that you willrespond to me.
FEEDING
How to feed me is a personal decision and I know you will makethe best choice for us both. I have detailed both feeding waysbelow:
BREAST
The first two weeks ofbreastfeeding are the mostfrustrating for you--you mayfeel insecure and I'm no help,but you can do it, I know youcan!
Buy a few nursing brasbecause they support yourbreasts and protect yourclothes.
It takes me about ten minutesto "empty" your breast with themost milk coming in the firstfive minutes. The last part ofthe feeding supplies me richerand creamier milk which is themost nutritious.
Here aresteps when
*Hold mearm.
some easy to followfeeding me:
in the crook of your
*Touch my lips with yournipple. Place your breastas far in my mouth as itwill go. If I only get yournipple,'you will be sore andthe milk ducts will not givemilk.
*Start with the left breastfor ten minutes and thenswitch to the right one. I
will stop when I'm full.Don't forget to burp me!
*To break my suction put yourfinger gently onto yourbreast close to the cornerof my mouth--I will release!NEVER pull me off yourbreast as it will hurt you.
FEEDING
What you eat, drink, or takedoes show up in some form inyour breast milk, so pleaso eathealthy for both our sakes.
You can freeze your milk forup to four months, if it'spoured in a sterile container,so you,can have some time toyourself and still know I willbe receiving your milk.
Talk to me when you arefeeding me - I love to hearyour voice. The more you talkto me the sooner I will try toimitate your voice.

BOTTLE FEEDING
Most formulas are availablein three different forms:Ready-to-use, concentrate, andpowder. When you buy myformula or receive it fron theW/C Program, make sure thelabel says "iron-fortified".Due to being a teen mom, youmay be eligible for freeformula and other things toofrom WIC - their number may belisted through the local healthdepartment.
Ready-to-use is expensive andis used for quick use - when weare traveling, for example, andit is difficult to stop.
Concentrate is formula thatmust be mixed with water. Itis usually the most economical.Powdered formula is most usefulas a supplement to breastfeeding when only an occasionalbottle is needed. To preparethe bottles and formula, followme, "it's easy"!
*The nipples on the bottlesneed holes so I can drink mymilk. If you dip a needle inboiling water, then stick itthrough the nipple center, I
will suck the nipple to releasethe formula. Don't make thehole too 'large - just bigenough so that milk dripsslowly from the bottle when youhold it upside down.
*Mix the formula and pour itinto a sterilized bottle(previously boiled in water -kills the germs). Plasticbottles are safer than glass.I forgot to mention that thenipples and caps need tosterilized too!
*Nursers (with a disposableplastic lining) are more
expensive but it means lesswashing and since the linercollapscs during drinking, I
take in less air, having toburp less.
*Test the temperature of theformula before feeding me byletting a few drops fall onyour wrist. If the milk feelsroom temperature, it is readyfor me to drink.
Offer me a bottle of wateroccasionally, especially in hotweather. Use bottled water orwater you've boiled and cooled.Please don't add sugar, honey,or corn syrup, fruit juice,soda pop, sweetened iced tea,or other sweetened drinks in mybottle.
While you're feeding me

*Hold me.
*Talk and coo to me and pressme close to you while lookingin my eyes.
*Take your time.
As a general rule, I will take3-4 ounces every 3-4 hoursduring the first month.
Don't forget to burp mel
Hold me upright over yourshoulder and pat me gently onthe back until the excess airis brought up. I will finishfeeding within 10-15 minutes bystopping my sucking, fallingasleep, or turning away fromyour nipple. I may spit upsome, but I will outgrow this.

BATRING
This is our special time. If
you can, try to keep my bath atthe same time each day,uninterrupted, and unhurried.The best room temperature for
me is 75-80 degrees and thewater should be comfortable tothe touch of your elbow (99-100degrees).
Never leave me alone on thetable or in the tub. If thephone rings or the doorbellsounds, don't answer it - I
might hurt myself!
I know you may not have allof these items, but if
available, try to have readyand within your reach:

Now we are ready!
Until I'm two weeks old, I
like a sponge bath in the washbasin - then I can be placed in
a tub. When you bathe me, justremember a few steps:
EYES
- Hold my head and wipe eacheye with a fresh cotton balldipped in warm water andsqueezed out.
-Wipe each of my eyes frominside out using a clean ballfor each eye.
NOSE
- With aarm water, use acotton swab and cleanse justinside each of my nostrils.

- Pat me dry.
EARS
-Using a soft wash cloth,gently wipe the outside of myears and behind them. There isno need to clean inside my earsas they naturally get rid ofany build-up.
FACE
- Wrap a wet, squeezed-outwashcloth around my head.Sqleeze plain water from thewashcloth onto my scalp. Don'tbe afraid of my soft spot.With your free hand, wash myhead with shampoo using a
circular motion. Rinse bysqueezing more plain water fromthe cloth. If you see scaleson the top of my head, this maybe "cradle cap". Don'tworry. Using my baby brush,shampoo my head and rinse myhead thoroughly. A few dropsof baby oil will help too.
BODY
- Soap the rest of my body.Rinse with a cloth.
- Pat me dry.
- Dip a cotton ball in babyoil or lotion and apply lightlyto groin, buttocks, and creasesin my diaper area.
Be sure to keep my partscovered with a dry towel thatyou are not using, to allow meto stay warm and enjoy my bath.

TUB BATHS
When I'm a few weeks old, youcan give me a tub bath. Place.
at least two towels on thebottom of the tub. Fill thebathtub to where my head rests.
This way water will never getinto my ears. Wash me as youwould in a sponge bath. Isn't
this fun!
DIAPERS
Whether you use cloth or
disposable diapers, this is
your personal preference.Cloth diapers are less
expensive and are moreabsorbent, but you will need to
buy diaper pins, water proofpants, and diaper-liners to
complete the cloth diapers.Plan to buy 4 dozen.
Disposable diapers are chosenby most parents but they aremore expensive. Whichever youdecide to use will be fine withme.

DIAPERING
My diapers should be changedwhen I wet or am soiled toprevent diaper rash. You mayfind that changing me willprobably be enough. If I havesensitive skin, I may requiremore frequent changes. To easeyour nervousness when changingme just:
1) Place me on a towel andremove my diaper.
2) Using warm water, wash mygenital area from front toback, patting dry.
3) If I had a bowel movement,fold the soiled portion underand wipe me. Wash me with mildsoap and water, patting dry.
4) You can use baby lotion oroil on me if you like.
5) Holding my ankles betweenyour thumb and middle finger(with your index finger betweenmy ankles), raise my hips andslide a clean diaper under me.
To avoid diaper rash, PLEASE:
*Keep my skin clean and dry.
*Gently c3ean diaper areaWith water and cotton duringChanges, especially after a
bowel movement.
*Don't allow me to stay in a
wet or soiled diaper. Thiswill avoid the mixing of urineand stool.
*Use a diaper with veryabsorbent material that helpslock wetness away from my skin.
*If diaper rash develops andpersists more than 48-72 hourscontact our health careprofessional.

WEIGHT
There is no "normal" orfixed rate at which I shouldgain weight. Like most babies,I will regulate my weight gainby eating only what I want andno more.
To keep track of my growth,you may want to weigh me eachweek and record my changes onthe chart on the next column.
Like most healthy babies, Iwill usually gain 4-7 ounceseach week. By my fifth month,I will have doubled my birthweight. After this time,however, my growth begins toslow. You may also wish tomeasure my length about once amonth and record it on thechart.
"Mom, why not buy a diary towrite m y marvelousaccomplishments? What did I dotoday? How do you feel aboutme? If you get busy and miss afew days, don't worry. Thiswill be our treasure but itwill also help the doctor if Ilater develop a medicalproblem."

*After a gradual introduction,serve me varieties of eachtype of food.
*Never force me to finish theserving. Feed me until I
indicate fullness by notopening my mouth, pulling awayfrom my spoon, turning away,or pushing food back out of mymouth.
*Be calm and friendly but notoverwhelming. Follow my leadon speed, food preferences,and amount.
*Avoid adding salt, sugar,spices, seasonings, or fat inall foods. I do not needthese ingredients, and spicesand seasonings may irritate mydigestive system.
*Test the temperature of foodsbefore feeding them to me tomake sure they are not toohot.
*Begin to offer infant formulaor breast milk from a cup. I
will consume less formula ormilk from the bottle as myintake of solids and drinkingfrom a cup increases.Eventually, I lose interest inmy aftermeal bottle and it canbe quietly discontinued.
*Offer sterile water in abottle or a cup during the daysince additional water isoften required when solids areintroduced.

*Do not give raw.fruits (exceptripe bananas) and vegetablesto me because they may causechoking and be difficult for
me to digest.
*Do not give citrus fruits, eggwhite, shellfish, and chocolateto me before 1 year of agebecause these foods may causeallergic reactions.
*Never give honey, includingsources used in cooking orbaking (such as honey grahamcrackers) to me. Honey issometimes contaminated withClostridium botulinum spores.If these spores are ingestedby me they can produce a toxinwhich may cause a type offoodborne illness calledinfant botulism.

Young children are at the highest risk of choking on food and
remain at high risk until they can chew better. Choking kills more
young children than any other home accident.

I need to be stimulated. Ifyou place me on my stomachwithout clothing for a shorttime before my bath, I willexperience sensations over theskin of my body. Gently rub myback, arms, and legs with yourhands. Make a babbling noiseagainst the ekin in the hollowof my neck or against my softtummy.
A "ticklish" baby is oftensensitive to touch because theyhave not had enough stimulationof their sense of touch.

Bread or crackers may beserved as the snack during thistime as it calms my hungerpangs and I can practicepicking up foods. Try to getcrackers made from whole-grainor enriched meal or flour.
Now is a good time tointroduce meats. Offer mewell-cooked strained or pureedlean beef, pork, lamb, veal,etc. Do not add fit, salt,seasonings, or spices to themeat. Avoid mixed vegetableand meat dinners as theycontain little Aeat.
Drinking From A Cup
When I am able to sit aloneis a good time to introduce meto a cup. Small amounts ofjuice, infant formule, breastmilk, or water are gooz1 Jourcesof nourishment for me. Spillswill be less if you give me acup with a spout, lid, and twohandles.
