AESTRACTDeveloped for the Spanish-speaking student at the

nonreading level (Level A), this booklet is one of three modules(Levels A, E, and C) in a curriculum unit on the cattle rancher. (The

cu:'..culum unit is one of a series of 12 curriculum units, each on adii_..:rent occupation, designed to develop career awareness in migrantanj non-migrant Spanish-speaking students at different readinglevels, particularly in grades K-6.) The booklet is divided intothiee sections: (1) Teaching Unit, which includes a listing ofocc:pations related to the cattle rancher at the entry andprcressional levels, unit objectives, major activities (two stories),coordinated subjects (reading and social studies) , attitude andawareness concepts, and a suggestion for a large group experiencewhich would provide a broad focus on the career cluster; (2) StudentActivities I and II (in separ .e sections), which provide full-pagepictures corresponding to the sequences of the stories presented inthe teaching unit, and which allow the testing of student learningaccording tc unit objectives; and (3) C:iterion Referenced Tests,which correspond to the two student activities. BEFORE THE LESSONS.

The students will be introduced to the occupation ofCattle Rancher as representative of the career cluster

of Agriculture. The cluster concept used here is the

concept used by the U.S. Office of Education titled:"Modified Clusters" which groups the occupational func-

tions of the nationit labor force into fiften broad areas.To get a broad focus on the cluster, begin the lessons

with a group experience.

LARGE GROUP EXPERIENCE.

Students will draw a picture of their favorite TV character

to place on the balletin board. The class will guess as to

the occupation of the character. Show students how to draw

"stick" figures.

If photos or magazine pictures are available, the teacher

can begin the activity by pasting examples on a bulletin

board.

Read the story, Pedro and the Cattle Ranch aloud tothe children. Have the students follow the sequenceof the Lory in the student booklets. When the students have completed thecoloring continue the lesson with a discussion of thequestions in Section IV.

Pedro Garcia iba en un bus grande a su escuela nueva. Elestaba viendo cosas por la ventana que nunca habla vistoantes como ser muchas vacas y becerritos. El no habia vis-to nunca tanto gai.ztdo junto en un mismo lugar.

"Mi nombre es 130:,21-G Garcia. ZQué hacen todos esos animalesalli afuera?", pregunt6 Pedro.

El muchacho se sonri6 y le dijo: "Ese es un rancho deganado, un lugar donde se crian novillos por su carne. Yome llamo, David Rivera. zNunca has visto un rancho?"


ACTIVITY I.

PEDRO AND THE CATTLE RANCH.A story.

Pedro Garcia was riding a large school bus to his newschool. He was seeing things out of the window that hehad never seen before, like many cows and baby calves.He had never seen so many cattle in one place.

"Where did all those animals come from?" he wonderedaloud.

He poked the boy next to him.

"My name is Pedro Garcia. What are all those animalsdoing out there?" he asked.

The boy next to him smiled and said, "That's a cattleranch -- a place where steers are raised for meat. Myname is David Rivera. Haven't you ever seen a ranch be-fore?"

"No ", respondiô Pedro. "Apenas nos trasladamos de NuevoMexico. Viviamos en el desierto".

"Eso no seria un buen lugar para la crianza de ganado. Elganado necesita mucha yerba y agua ",dijo David con muchaautoridad.

"Ahora hay un montAn de becerritos en el rancho, por lo tanto,esta epoca es muy ocupada para toda la gente en el rancho. Losbecerros por lo general nacen en febrero y marzo. Los animali-tos son mucho trabajo para los vaqueros".

"That wouldn't be a very good place to try to raise cat-tle. Cattle need lots of grass and water," David said.

"You surely know a lot about cows," Pedro said, stilllookinf, out the window.

"That's because I live on a ranch. My papa works on theranch for my Uncle Robert. Papa's job is to manage theranch and see that the animals are taken care of. He

is the ranch foreman," David said proudly.

"Right now there are lots of baby calves on the ranchso this is a busy time for all the men at the ranch.Calves are usually born in February or March. New ani-mals mean much work for the cowboys."

"I have seen cowboys in the movies," Pedro said, tryingto act as though he knew something about ranching.

"These cowboys are real, though," said David. "They helptake care of the cows and calves. The cowboys ridehorses, drive jeeps, and even use a helicopter sometimes.The long ropes they use are called lariats. Sometimesthe cowboys are called cowpunchers. Maybe you'll see oneof the fence riders out checking fences this morning,"David said, looking out the'window.

When you are vaccinated, you are given.a mildform of a disease so that your body will buildup a resistance toward the real disease.

A cattle rancher will need help because ittakes two people to hold a calf down and oneto brand. There are also others helping toget the calves ready for the men who arebranding.

Dehorning and vaccination also require peopleto do different jobs.

Pedro was very anxious to sit with his new friend whenhe boarded the school bus the next morning. And,David was just as anxious to tell Pedro the storyabout his Uncle's cattle ranch.

David had been thinking of some of the most excitingthings which took place on the ranch during each year.He was sure Pedro would like to know about them, too.

"Pretty soon it will be round-up time, Pedro," Davidbegan. "That's lots of fun, but we surely are busy then."

"What happens at round-up time, David?" Pedro asked.

David started by telling how the cowboys round up allthe calves in the spring or early summer to preparethem for going on the range with their mothers. Allthe ranch hands who work on his Uncle's ranch and thosewho work on neighboring ranches come together to helpwith the big job of branding, vaccinating, dehorning,and marking.

Pedro interrumpió a David, diciéndole: "David, no entiendoesas palabras grandes. De qué hablas?"

"No te preocupes, Pedro", dijo muy tranquilo David, "cuandotermine mi cuento sabrSs tanto que podras ser vaquero de unavez

"Do you really think so!" Pedro exclaimed.

"I get to help the men now, but not with the brandingor vaccination. I'm just not strong enough for thosejobs."

David started to tell about all the jobs that had tobe done during round-up time.

"The first.thing that happens on that day is to starta fire and put branding irons in the flames till theybecome red hot," he told his friend. "Our brandingiron is made from two letters "R.R." which stand forRoberto Rivera, my Uncle's name. Here, David, letme draw it for you on my school pad."

"Tell me more about branding, David" Pedro asked.

"I like this part of round-up best," David began. "Whenthe irons are hot, they throw the calf down and putthe branding iron to the skin in a certain place,burning off all the hair. When the burn heals, itleaves a mark on the calf in the shape of the brand.Whenever anyone sees that calf they will know to whomit belongs because of the brand it has."

Before Pedro could ask if'putting ear marks on thecalves hurt, David began talking about something else.

"At round-up time, there also may be some diseases for

which the calves will be vaccinated."

"When you come to play at my house, I'll show you lotsof stuff and then you'll know about calves and cows too,"David said as the bus pulled into the school yard.

As they got off the bus for another day of school,Pedro was left with the thought, "Being a cattle rancherwould be an interesting thing for me to do when I growup. I like to be around animals and I like to be out-side. Wouldn't it be great to be called a "cowboy":"
