MassDEPCommercial Food Waste Disposal Ban

Applies to businesses and institutions that dispose of one ton (2,000

lbs.) or more of commercial organic waste per week (e.g. food

waste).

Went into effect on October 1, 2014.

How do I know if it applies to me?

Estimation algorithm on http://recyclingworksma.com/

ROT for restaurants:

0.5 lbs. per meal served (4,000 meals served per week)

1 trash dumpster at 4 cubic yards 2 times per week (full-service, 66% by

Ecovim TechnologyOrganic Waste Reduction and Conversion

• Machine can accept any organic material and

compostable matter.

• Our model (Eco-250) can hold up to 250 lbs. of

input material.

• Output is approximately 25 lbs. of sterile “bio-

mass” and approximately 20 gal. of potable

water.

• Electricity cost per cycle is approximately $0.70

(3kWh, 12.5 cents delivery, 10.5 cents

generation).

• 3-phase power is an option (our installation is 3-

phase).

• Process and output materials are essentially

odorless.

• 250 lbs. of waste costs $17.95 to dispose of at the

Provincetown Transfer Station ($29,880 acquisition

price).

Ecovim Eco-250At work in Provincetown

• 18-gallon Rubbermaid totes were

distributed to each food business.

• Totes were collected on an as-

needed basis (typically every one

to two days).

• Ecovim Eco-250 was loaded

throughout the day as organic

waste was brought to Art House

location.

• Cycle was typically run overnight

and took between 12 and 15

hours.

• End product removed in AM and

sent to Punkhorn Farm in Brewster.
