Economy with words
Shorter wordings save the reader time, are clearer and make reading more interesting and economizing on words is one of the way to shorten sentences.
Shortening the sentence by :
• Avoid cluttering phrases
• Avoid pleonasm/ redundant phrases
• Avoid circuitious expressions
• Avoid needless repetition
Avoid Cluttering phrases
• Replace the often used phrases(usually long) with shorter wording without a loss of meaning.
• Eg.: “In the event that payment is not made by December, our collaboration will cease. “
change to
“If payment is not made by December, our collaboration will cease.”
Avoid Pleonasm Phrases
• Pleonasm is the use of more words than are necessary to convey meaning (e.g., see with one's eyes) which also being known as redundant.
• Eg. :
“The records of accounts indicate that the company faced great loss in this fiscal year.”
change to
“The company is not prepared to extend at this point of time.”
Avoid circuitous expressions
• Using more direct expression rather that sentences
