Hot Topics in Economy:
The cost of living is rising for many people as the price of gas goes up, especially
because we live in an isolated area.
We don’t have very many band-run
businesses, so most of our money gets spent outside our village.
There’s lots of opportunity though!
Over 90% of our community members
are unemployed and/or on social
assistance!
Our band offers job training like:
wFirst AidwFoodsafewServing it RightwWhite Water Safety &
Rescue
wFirearm Acquisition Certificate (FAC)wNon-Timber Forest
Products (NTFPs)wTimber Framing
Great Bear Nature Tours in Nekite, Smith Inlet
Mill & Timber logging in Strachan Bay
Our Special Claim money could be used to start businesses that would help our community
Our people traditionally worked
in the ‘goods’ industry, as fishermen, loggers, craftsmen, etc. But out of all the
jobs in BC nowadays, only 1 in 5 are in ‘goods’.
The rest (4 out of 5) are in ‘services’, meaning cashiers, waitresses, nurses,
teachers, social workers, etc.
)There is
a lot of funding available for economic development in first
nation communities, from groups like Community Futures
)Almost all of
the money that keeps our band running comes from the government (we are not self-
sufficient)
