WHAT ARE HARMONICS?Harmonics are voltage waveform distortions.Odd numbered harmonics are dominant and very destructive.They are predominant in the range of higher frequencies. TotalHarmonic Distortion (THD) on odd numbered harmonicsinfluence distortion in a great way.Certain harmonics have distinguished themselves in beingspecially harmful to power systems. Third harmonics (3rd) andmultiples (5th, 7th, 9th) receive special attention as triplets.Triplets, in frequency harmonic dominance and in sequentialanalysis return via the neutral, with values higher than thephase. Harmonics with negative sequences ( 5th, 11th, 17th)have a large impact on transformers and motors because their rotation is opposed to the rotation of the base (60Hz)component.
